Spotify Slams Drake’s ‘False’ And Purely ‘Speculative’ Legal Filing That Accuses The Company Of A Kendrick Lamar Payola Scheme

Drake’s legal filing against UMG and Spotify caused controversy among rap fans. However, the “No Face” rapper remains steadfast in his beliefs that his own record label and the streaming giant colluded to “artificially inflate” the popularity of Kendrick Lamar’s diss song “Not Like Us.”

Now, the music titans are fighting back. Today (December 20), Spotify reportedly responded to Drake’s pre-petition with a motion of its own in Manhattan court. According to Billboard, it claimed to have “found zero evidence to support the claims of a bot attack” to increase the streams of “Not Like Us.” The company also denied entering a backdoor deal with UMG to aid Kendrick in his war of words with Drake.

“The predicate of Petitioner’s entire request for discovery from Spotify is false,” read the motion. “Spotify and UMG have never had any such arrangement.”

Later in the document, Spotify slammed Drake for filing a pre-petition rather than a full-on case.

“What petitioner is seeking to do here is to bypass the normal pleading requirements,” the wrote. “And obtain by way of pre-action discovery that which it would only be entitled to seek were it to survive a motion to dismiss. This subversion of the normal judicial process should be rejected.”

It continued, “The petition asserts no specific facts of any kind in support of these alleged RICO and deceptive practices violations. Instead, it relies exclusively on speculation or the claims of anonymous individuals on the internet.”

The closed by rebutted the allegation of bot manipulation, writing, “When we identify attempted stream manipulation, we take action that may include removing streaming numbers, withholding royalties and charging penalty fees. Confirmed and suspected artificial streams are also removed from our chart calculations. This helps us to protect royalty payouts for honest, hardworking artists.”

UMG also addressed the matter in a statement of its own (viewable here).

Lefty Gunplay Details “Cool” Relationship With Kendrick Lamar

Lefty Gunplay is having a huge 2024. The rapper dropped a staggering four albums during the year. He also had a breakout guest appearance on Kendrick Lamar’s song “tv off.” The single was a standout on Lamar’s album, GNX, and peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Lefty Gunplay is a burgeoning star, and he’s made it clear that his relationship with Lamar is strong. The rapper recently sat down for an interview in which he claimed Lamar was the most famous person in his phone. He also assured fans that he could call K. Dot whenever he wanted.

“I’ll call Kendrick right now,” Lefty Gunplay told the interviewer. “He’ll answer me, yeah, for sure.” He went on to explain that he’s developed a friendship with the Lamar since they collaborated. The rapper added that Lamar “loves” him, and would do whatever was necessary to link up if needed. “He loves me,” Lefty Gunplay asserted. “If I need to talk to Kendrick Lamar right now, he gon’ answer. We’re cool like that.” He also explained the ways in which his life has changed since his “tv off” appearance. Lefty Gunplay stated that he now has people making calls for him.

Lefty Gunplay Confirms He’s “Cool” With K. Dot

“We’re so famous that he gets ahold of me through his team,” Gunplay explained. “And low-key I’m becoming that famous where we got so much going on.” The rapper is thrilled to be rising up the ranks in terms of hip hop stardom. Still, he maintains that his bond with Lamar is legitimate. “If I need him to know that ‘Lefty said he really needs to talk to you,’” he noted. “He’ll call. I know he will. Shout out Kendrick.” It has only been a few months since the release of “tv off,” but Lefty Gunplay has already delved into the circumstances in which he clicked with Lamar.

The most interesting aspect of Lefty’s story, though, is that Drake reportedly tried to reach out first. He told Bootleg Kev Podcast that Drake was a fan. “He liked a couple things, he liked my songs,” he stated. Still, the connection wasn’t there the way that it was, and currently is, between Lefty Gunplay and Lamar. “[Drake] never reached out the way Kendrick did,” the rapper explained. “When he reached out, he was real. He made me feel comfortable. I felt comfortable with him.” Hopefully we hear more Lefty and K. Dot music moving forward.

Lil Baby Didn’t Love Being Mentioned By Kendrick Lamar On His Hit Drake Diss ‘Not Like Us’

At one point on “Not Like Us,” Kendrick Lamar drops a bunch of Drake-related names, rapping, “You called Future when you didn’t see the club / Lil Baby helped you get your lingo up / 21 gave you false street cred / Thug made you feel like you a slime in your head / Quavo said you can be from Northside / 2 Chainz say you good, but he lied.”

It turns out Lil Baby didn’t love getting dragged into the beef.

In a recent chat with Charlamagne Tha God (as HotNewHipHop notes), Baby said:

“I ain’t really into, like, that side of hip-hop. So, I don’t really… you know. [Drake and I have a] great relationship. Great relationship. It’s just with any situation, like, if you and him was arguing, why the hell you gon’ say me, you know? I don’t be having nothing to do with it. […] I feel like, to me, like, rap and sh*t be my work. It’s, like, I don’t want that type of sh*t at work, know what I’m saying? Even with you saying, like, ‘What’s your relationship with Gunna?’ I ain’t in it for that type of sh*t, you know what I’m saying? I ain’t on that.”

Snoop Dogg Says Kendrick Lamar ‘Has the Right’ to Call Him Out on “wacced out murals”

Kendrick Lamar has respect for the legends, especially those from the West. On the opening track of his new album, GNX, “wacced out murals,” Lamar revealed his reaction to Snoop Dogg reposting Drake’s “Taylor Made Freestyle” diss toward him:

“Snoop posted ‘Taylor Made’, I prayed it was the edibles
It was only right for me to let it go”

Snoop heard the bar and spoke about it with Bootleg Kev.

“That’s my nephew, he’s a rapper man he’s supposed to speak his mind and tell his truth,” said Snoop. “That’s the way he felt and he has the right to say that. I’m his big homeboy so I have to take what’s given to me from his perspective because he’s speaking truth. And the truth shouldn’t hurt you, it should make you better.”

You can hear the full explanation from Snoop Dogg below.

Back in the beef days, Drake received a cease-and-desist and had to remove the “Taylor Made Freestyle” from online. Originally posted on Instagram, the single used an AI-generated Tupac voice to provoke Lamar.

According to Billboard, the estate threatened to sue and stated the voice was “a flagrant violation” and “blatant use” of Pac’s legacy.

The message was delivered via a cease-and-desist letter filed by Howard King, requesting Drake pull the song within 24 hours or face all of the estate’s “legal remedies.”

“The Estate is deeply dismayed and disappointed by your unauthorized use of Tupac’s voice and personality,” King wrote in the letter. “Not only is the record a flagrant violation of Tupac’s publicity and the estate’s legal rights, it is also a blatant abuse of the legacy of one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time. The Estate would never have given its approval for this use.”

Additionally, the letter reads, “The unauthorized, equally dismaying use of Tupac’s voice against Kendrick Lamar, a good friend to the Estate who has given nothing but respect to Tupac and his legacy publicly and privately, compounds the insult.”

Last Friday (April 19) on Instagram, Drake dropped off the “Taylor Made Freestyle.”

Upon pressing play, you will hear something you wouldn’t expect: Tupac’s voice. The single opens with an AI Tupac verse requesting KDot stand up for the West Coast. It is followed by an AI Snoop Dogg asking for the same.

AI Tupac raps:
Fuck this Canadian lightskin, Dot
We need an undebated West Coast victory, man
Call him a bitch for me
Talk about him liking young girls, that’s a gift from me
Heard it on the Budden Podcast, it’s gotta be true
They told me the spirit of Makaveli is alive
In the nigga under five-foot five, so it’s gotta be you

AI Snoop added:
‘Cause right now it’s looking like you writing out the game plan on how to lose
How to bark up the wrong tree and then get your head popped in a crowded room
World is watching this chess game, but are you out of moves?

After that, Drake pops in for his own slick talk:
The first one really only took me an hour or two
The next one is really ’bout to bring out the coward in you
But now we gotta wait a fucking week ’cause Taylor Swift is your new Top
And if you ’bout to drop, she gotta approve

Since “Like That,” your tone changed a little, you not as enthused
How are you not in the booth? It feel like you kinda removed
You tryna let this shit die down, nah, nah, nah
Not this time, nigga, you followin’ through

He ends the song with a message, “I know you’re in that NY apartment, you struggling right now I know it.”

You can hear it below.

Snoop Dogg offered his response to his voice being used in Drake’s diss song to Kendrick Lamar.

Hitting Instagram, Snoop said: “They did what? When? How? Are you sure? Y’all have a good night.”

Additionally, Snoop revealed his phone exploded once the song hit the net.

Snoop Dogg on Drake’s Lawsuit: ‘On the West We Hold Court in the Streets’

Snoop Dogg at Summerfest 2019

Snoop Dogg already spoke on Kendrick Lamar’s reaction to his support of “Taylor Made Freestyle,” but what about Drake’s lawsuit?

During his time with Bootleg Kev, The Doggfather stated, “You know, on the West, we hold court in the streets. That’s just what we call it.”

You can hear it from Snoop below.

Following the filing of petitions on November 25, sales of “Not Like Us” have surged by 440 percent, with streams increasing by 20 percent, according to Talk of the Charts. The dramatic spike highlights the song’s renewed attention, driven by the recent developments.

In related news, Kendrick Lamar’s unexpected album GNX has made a powerful debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart dated Dec. 7, earning the rapper his fifth consecutive chart-topping project. Released without prior notice on Nov. 22, GNX garnered 319,000 equivalent album units in its first week, according to Luminate, marking the sixth-largest debut of the year.

Streaming drove most of GNX’s success, with 285,000 SEA units translating to 379.72 million on-demand streams of its 12 tracks. This achievement secured the album the No. 1 spot on Top Streaming Albums and delivered 2024’s biggest streaming week for an R&B/hip-hop album. Among all genres, it ranks as the year’s second-largest debut and third-biggest streaming week, trailing only Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department.

The remaining units include 32,000 album sales and 2,000 TEA units. Despite only being available as a standard digital download, GNX landed at No. 2 on Top Album Sales.

The album includes 12 tracks, including the one teased in the “Not Like Us” video, officially titled “Squabble Up.” The album also includes a trailer of Lamar with his GNX ride. You can peep it all below.

Kendrick Lamar’s Mural In Compton Gets Vandalized Again

Kendrick Lamar must be living rent free in some people’s heads right now. A video is currently spreading across X (Twitter) of Kung Fu Kenny’s mural in Compton vandalized once more. Yes, in just the last few months, the West Coast icon’s stunning artwork is now tarnished to some degree. The first instance occurred back in September just a few days after he was announced as the Super Bowl Halftime Show performer. A man walked up to it with black spray paint and wrote “OVIO,” while also crossing out the eyes on each of the three faces of Lamar. This all went down just two months after the mural was put up in the MC’s hometown.

There’s a good chance that this act helped inspire Kendrick to pen the opening GNX cut “wacced out murals.” If you remember, he begins the song with, “Yesterday, somebody whacked out my mural / That energy’ll make you n****s move to Europe / But it’s regular for me, yeah, that’s for sure / The love and hate is definite without a cure / All this talk is b****-made, that’s on my Lord.” Well, Lamar might have to make a part two or make this into a series now, because we are afraid the vandalizing won’t stop here.

Kendrick Lamar Still Has Some Folks Mad

That’s especially true after this second case. As you can see from the video above, the original black spray paint was never removed. Now, there are some light blue “X” marks over the flanking busts of Lamar, in addition to some red “$$” on the first one on the left. But the most glaring difference is that the largest image of Lamar on the wall is completely blacked out.

In the second clip above, the man decides to show his face and record himself painting over the artwork. This looks to have been done back on November 25, or that’s at least what the Instagram video suggests. If that’s true, then that’s just three days after the release of GNX. Fans are just confused as to why the man would reveal his identity and only paint the middle Lamar bust. “Why is he doing that? also showing his face like that?” one X user questions. If there’s one thing for sure, K. Dot is still public enemy number one for a lot of people. It makes sense though, he is King Kendrick after all.

An Old, Unreleased Kendrick Lamar Song Just Popped Up On His YouTube Page Out Of Nowhere

Kendrick Lamar is full of surprises. First there was the wave of Drake diss tracks, then there was the release of his new album GNX, then there’s what happened today: Out of nowhere, “Money Without Me,” a vintage unreleased Lamar track, popped up on his official YouTube channel.

Multiple commenters on the YouTube upload say the song originates from the era when Lamar released his debut album, 2011’s Section.80.

Lamar opens the autobiographical tune, “Now, I was raised on the wild side, ever since a child / I ‘member food stamps when mama said it’s chow time / Papa had the green Seville with the Alpine / Woofer in the back, Doggystyle, track number 9 / Lifestyles of a lil’ nappy head / Guns in the closet, bills in the bed / Watchin’ Jay-Z on BET countin’ bread / Pointed at him then I said, / ‘Man, you ain’t gettin’ money without me.’”

In other Lamar news, Lil Wayne recently addressed the Super Bowl Halftime show and Lamar’s GNX lyric about him, saying, “He saw how much it meant to me, I think that’s all he means. Obviously, he can’t control that, you know? So he didn’t let me down. It ain’t like he can control it or nothing. And also, I’ve spoken to him and I wished him all the best and told him he better kill it.”

Ab-Soul Demands Fans Stop “Pretending” To Overlook His Talent

Ab-Soul is a great rapper. Anybody who has listened to a single verse from the TDE veteran can attest to it. Soul has struggled to attain the icon status of Kendrick Lamar, however, or even the crossover success of fellow Black Hippy members Jay Rock and ScHoolboy Q. He’s the odd man out, and he’s tired of being nice about it. Ab-Soul took to Twitter on December 16 and stakes his claim to be taken seriously as an artist. He urged fans to give his talent, and his latest album, the attention they deserve.

Ab-Soul is nothing if not articulate, and he knew his statement was going to come off as arrogant to many. “This may be distasteful for me to say to say on my own,” he posited. “Given the insatiable state of social media.” The rapper then let followers and onlookers have it. “F*cc it,” he wrote. “Soul Burger is a phenomenal body of work. I put it all on the table.” The statement then switched from the album to his perception as an artist in general. “Stop pretending to overlook me,” he demanded. “It’s unbecoming of the culture.”

Ab-Soul Previously Dubbed Himself The “B.O.A.T.”

Some fans may be taken aback by Ab-Soul’s bold claim, but the rapper has always been confident in his abilities. Soul received arguably the most flattering shoutout of any Black Hippy member on the Kendrick Lamar “heart pt. 6.” Lamar claimed that he honed his rhyming style by trying to copy Ab-Soul, and was blown away by the Carson City rapper’s wordplay. Soulo went on Instagram Live to address his feelings on the song and his impact. He gave props to Lamar and admitted he learned from Lamar as much as K. Dot learned from him.

Ab-Soul did, however, claim that he was the better rapper. Not only better than Kendrick Lamar, but any other person walking the planet. “I am the B.O.A.T,” Ab-Soul explained. “I am the best rapper, that’s it. Ask anyone.” The rapper assured fans that he’s not just talking to talk. Soul genuinely feels he can take out anybody who dares challenge him. “I say that humbly,” the rapper concluded. “It’s not from a place of arrogance. I really do this.”

Snoop Dogg Says He ‘Called And Apologized’ To Kendrick Lamar After Recklessly Reposting Drake’s Diss Song

Snoop Dogg dropped by The Bootleg Kev podcast to discuss is latest collaborative album, Missionary with Dr. Dre. However, another recording artist’s music sneakily became the topic of conversation.

Bootleg Kev did not waste anytime in asking Snoop Dogg about inserting himself in Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s rap beef when he reposted Drake diss “Taylor Made Freestyle.”

Snoop Dogg confessed that he “called and apologized” to Kendrick Lamar for giving the diss track a co-sign without listening to the full song that featured an AI-generated verse of his likeness and the late Tupac. On “Wacced Out Murals,” Kendrick called Snoop out for going against the home team (California) and he’s ok with that.

“That’s my nephew, man,” Snoop Dogg said. “He’s a rapper, man. He’s supposed to speak his mind and tell his truth. That’s the way he felt. You know what I’m saying? He has the right to say that. I’m his big homeboy, so I have to take what’s given to me from his perspective because he’s speaking truth. And the truth shouldn’t hurt you. It should make you better.”

Snoop then went on to try and explain away the misstep claiming he only reposted that song because it referenced his song “Gin and Juice” and adult beverage company.

“What happened was, I did a collaborative post with someone [on Instagram]. So when I post it, I’m thinking I’m posting Gin and Juice,” he said. “I don’t know what song this is. I’m not hip to everybody’s music. Then I get the word, ‘Nephew didn’t like what you did.’‘What did I do?’‘You played some music’. ‘What music?’ Then I had to go look at it. I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s cuz… damn.’ So then I deleted it, called nephew, left him a message ’cause he ain’t pick up. He was working on his sh*t. I left him a message. ‘I apologize. I was f*cked up, my bad.’”

However, users online are not buying Snoop’s explanation. “Very mature of him. But he’s def lying about now knowing about the song lol,” wrote one user.

Well, if it was good enough for Kendrick that is all Snoop cares about.

Lil Wayne Reveals What He Said To Kendrick Lamar About The 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show

Lil Wayne was devastated when Kendrick Lamar, and therefore not himself, was chosen to perform the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show. It seemed like maybe there was a bit of beef between the two, and now Wayne has addressed it.

Speaking about his general feelings on the situation on The Skip Bayless Show, Wayne said:

“For whatever reason, I believe that it’s over my head, meaning I don’t know why, period. Personally, the person I am, I straight look at it like, ‘You ain’t there, you ain’t there, you gotta get there.’ […] It is what it is. […] I want to get to the point where I’m undeniable. I want them to walk in there and have ten other choices and whoever’s in charge says, ‘No, you have to go with him.’”

Wayne then talked about his interpretation of Lamar’s lyrics about him on GNX‘s “Wacced Out Murals” (“I used to bump Tha Carter III, I held my Rollie chain proud / Irony, I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down”). Wayne also revealed he’s spoken to Lamar about the situation, saying, “He saw how much it meant to me, I think that’s all he means. Obviously, he can’t control that, you know? So he didn’t let me down. It ain’t like he can control it or nothing. And also, I’ve spoken to him and I wished him all the best and told him he better kill it.”
