IDK Announces His Upcoming Album ‘Simple’ Will Be Produced Kaytranada

For the better part of a month now, DMV MC IDK (say that five times fast) has been teasing the impending release of his third studio album. He’s been calling the follow-up to 2021’s USee4Yourself a huge departure and today, he revealed why: The whole album will be produced by the house pioneer Kaytranada. It’s called Simple, and he shared its abstract cover via Instagram and Twitter. He also shared its release date via his new Discord server. Here’s a hint: He’ll be competing with Jack Harlow.

The collaboration announcement shouldn’t be that much of a surprise after IDK’s last single, “Taco,” was produced by Kaytranada and gave a glimpse of the rapper’s new direction. An upbeat track with heavy dance music influence, “Taco” presented a juxtaposition between the glittering production and the rapper’s gritty, rhymes — exactly the sort of contradiction that IDK has loved to present on past projects like IsHeReal? and USee4Yourself. Meanwhile, Kaytranada has gotten more active lately, ending 2021 with his EP, Intimidated, and showing off his production chops on Joyce Wrice’s new single “Iced Tea.” It should be interesting to see what these two genre-benders have come up with.

Simple is due 5/6 via Clue and Warner Records.

Kaytranada Updates The Weeknd’s ‘Out Of Time’ With An Infectious And Groovy Remix

It’s been a few months since The Weeknd dropped his sixth album Dawn FM, and since then the project is still one of this year’s best releases. He’s promoted the project with a few videos and he’s set to bring Dawn FM and other songs from his discography to different corners of the United States and Canada through his After Hours Til Dawn Tour with Doja Cat. Fresh off his performance as a headliner at last weekend’s Coachella Festival, The Weeknd teams up with Kaytranada for a new remix to one of the most popular songs fromDawn FM.

Kaytranada, known for his groovy and spirited production, breathes new life into The Weeknd’s “Out Of Time” with a new take. Through his remix, Kaytranada speeds up the tempo on the track, which originally arrived as a lovelorn and slow-paced effort, thus granting listeners a new record to dance to. The remix arrives after The Weeknd teamed up with Jim Carrey and Squid Game star Jung Ho-yeon in his video for “Out Of Time.”

On a more recent note, The Weeknd caused some eyebrows to raise when he played an apology voicemail at Coachella, which many people believed was from his ex Bella Hadid. As for Kaytranada, the new remix comes after he teamed up with IDK for their record, “Taco.”

IDK And Kaytranada Mask Sharp Threats With Wavy Production On ‘Taco’

This summer will mark one year since DMV rapper IDK dropped off his sophomore album USee4Yourself. The 17-track project flaunted appearances from Young Thug, Offset, Westside Gunn, the late MF DOOM, Lucky Daye, T-Pain, and more. USee4Yourself, which was later extended thanks to nine additional songs, was the companion project to IDK’s 2019 debut Is He Real? One of IDK’s best qualities is his versatility and ability to lay down bars just as well as he can construct a soulful record. A perfect example of that comes on “Taco,” his new collaboration with Kaytranda.

The new track is steered by wavy production that Kaytra does so well, but the song’s beat simply masks the harsh and cut-throat threats that IDK delivers on it. Between dark street tales and IDK’s relentless insults towards the opposition, “Taco” presents quite the juxtaposition that makes the song all that more interesting.

While this is IDK’s first release of 2022, it stands as Kaytranada’s second of the year after he previously teamed up with Joyce Wrice for their “Iced Tea” collaboration. That song arrived after he ended 2021 with his 3-song EP, Intimidated.

You can listen to “Taco” in the video above.
