Retired NBA player, current NBA analyst, and podcaster JJ Redick is being looked at for a head coaching opportunity. The Charlotte Hornets are set to interview Redick for their vacant head coaching position. Steve Clifford stepped down as the Hornets coach, moving to a front-office position with the franchise. The Hornets are reportedly very interested in JJ Redick, and the interest might be mutual. Franchises have looked at JJ before as a potential coach, but this might be the gig that gets him on the sideline. 

Redick was an incredible sharpshooter and role player. He was drafted by the Orlando Magic in 2006 after starring at Duke University. The sharpshooter played 6-seasons with the Magic. Additionally, he spent 4-seasons on the Los Angeles Clippers, playing with Blake Griffin and Chris Paul during the Lob City era. Finally, after a stint on the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Orleans Pelicans, Redick retired from Basketball. He became an NBA analyst, becoming an extremely popular voice in the NBA media from appearances on ESPN. He recently started a basketball podcast with Los Angeles Lakers LeBron James.

JJ Redick Getting Head Coaching Interest

JJ Redick was a 15-year NBA vet and is an extremely smart basketball mind. He doesn’t have any coaching experience at the professional level. Additionally, the move to NBA coaching would be a risk for both Redick and the franchise. Former players usually have to serve under established head coaches as assistants and get their opportunities that way. JJ would be jumping straight to the head position without any of the groundwork. Nevertheless, The Charlotte Hornets may be looking for a younger coach who’s experienced with today’s players to turn around their young roster. JJ might be that guy.

This season, the Hornets finished 13th in the Eastern Conference. They were one of the youngest teams in the league and generally played to their age. They are led by point guard LaMelo Ball, who has dealt with injuries all season but is at showtime when he is on the court. Additionally, the Hornets also drafted a promising rookie, Brandon Miller, who looks like he has star potential. It isn’t a dire situation, but it is one that needs a lot of work. In a phone interview with The Athletic, JJ explains the intentions behind Mind the Game. “It’s meant to be a very free-flowing conversation about the sport and about the game. If you look at it in a very simplistic way, it’s just about basketball.” James also spoke about how thrilled he is to be bringing this production to life. “I’m really proud of what we’ve done to innovate in sports media. When I do a project, the only thing I think about is whether me and my friends would watch it. That is definitely the case with ‘Mind the Game.’ Everything doesn’t need to be designed for internet culture and clicks.” Guests will also be a regularity on this show too and as of now, there are no sponsors for the show. However, with as big as LeBron and Redick are to the basketball world, it should not be problem for this to blow up without the backing or the explosive rants.

JJ Schools Stephen A. & Mad Dog About Kawhi Leonard

This moment came during the 2023 NBA playoffs. After the Suns dumped the short-handed Clippers, Stephen A. argued that the team needed a hard reset and to jettison the injury-prone Kawhi Leonard and Paul George because they were cooked. This prompted a four-minute rant from JJ, spearheaded by the devastating remark “listening to each of you right now, it’s very obvious you have played zero high-level basketball and you do not understand the requirements of doing that.”

Furthermore, JJ was proven right less than a year later. The Clippers are absolutely balling behind a healthy Kawhi and PG3. At the time of writing, they are 36-17 and third in the Western Conference.

JJ Calls Stephen A. “Irresponsible” For Warriors Hype

Our next moment goes all the way back to November 2021, when Stephen A. was ready to riding a 9-1, Klay Thompson-less Warriors all the way to an NBA championship. The first thing out of JJ’s mouth in response? “It’s irresponsible.” Redick argued that perspective was needed because it was 10 games into the season and the Warriors had played the league’s eighth-easiest schedule. Smith didn’t explode at Redick like in some other examples of their beef but he definitely tried his best to “school the rookie”.

Come the NBA Finals and Stephen A. was proven right. Klay came back from injury smoothly and Golden State beat the Celtics 4-2 in the Finals. The only thing Smith didn’t land was James Wiseman, who would not return during the season and has never lived up to his second-overall pick billing.

JJ Crosses The Line When Taking College Shots At Stephen A.

You know a moment is heated when it ends with an on-air apology. This is perhaps the most infamous of their on-air beef. While discussing LeBron’s potential retirement in the 2023 offseason, JJ struck below the belt. After Stephen A. dismissed JJ’s take out of hand, JJ cut him off to throw some body blows. “You didn’t play, Stephen A., you didn’t play. You don’t understand the athletic mentality. Three games at South Dakota Winston-Salem State? Doesn’t count,” JJ remarked.

This moment technically happened on Get Up! and not First Take but it’s still worth talking about. During the 2022 NBA Finals, Mike Greenburg was complaining that the modern game was softer than the play seen in the 80s and 90s. Stephen A. weighed in to agree, unsurprising given how much he hates the Rest Rule. However, JJ wasn’t having any of it. “This nostalgic standard that you’ve set for players to the 80s and 90s, and then comparing us to it all the time like we are a substandard to that, it gets annoying.”

This is one of the moments where Stephen A. dispensed with his standard “mhm, I’m listening” noises and just started yelling. The clip is nearly unwatchable as three grown men scream at each other, ironically, about grown men screaming (or not screaming) at each other.

A visibly confused JJ cuts him off to explain that over the last ten years, the most efficient half-court play in the entire NBA is a Jokic post up. Stephen A. proceeds to backpedal so cartoonishly that Bugs Bunny would be proud. Eventually, he manages to stammer out that he simply meant he sees Jokic more like Kevin McHale than Shaq.

As we said, everyone makes mistakes. But what you shouldn’t do around JJ Redick is make basic errors about play efficiency, especially when trying to disparage a player like Jokic.

Jackson had taken offense to Austin Rivers’ rationale behind why LeBron and Bronny shouldn’t play on the same team if Bronny makes the move to the NBA. “Difference is you trash, Bronny not. However, as mentioned, it was a bizarre reaction given that Rivers had been arguing that Bronny doesn’t need the added obstacle of playing in his father’s shadow. “I don’t want to see Bronny play with [LeBron]… Him getting drafted & playing with his dad, I don’t want that negativity to come his way. He doesn’t deserve it… [He needs to] play somewhere where he can niche out his own identity,” Rivers told NBA Today.

While he does have a lot going on off the court, it is on the court where there has been little to no action. This is because Zion is constantly injured. Additionally, the Pelicans are even thinking of trading him. As Redick explained, however, trading Zion could be premature. Although, he did get brutally honest about Williamson and his commitment to playing basketball.

While Redick firmly believes in Zion as a talent, he also knows that the Pelicans’ big man is never in great shape. Once he starts taking his body and heath seriously, only then will NOLA actually become a real contender. “The Pelicans will never reach their full potential with [Zion] on the roster until the preparation, the training, the diet, the sleep [all click, which are] required to go play basketball,” JJ Redick said. It was a harsh assessment, albeit one that Zion probably needs to hear at this point.

JJ Redick has been critical of Zion Williamson in the past. However, this is probably the harshest he has been. Throughout the past four seasons, Zion has been unable to deliver, and the fanbase in New Orleans is getting tired. Hopefully, he can turn things around, next season.
