Jerrod Carmichael Admits He “Regrets” Dave Chappelle Criticism, Makes JAY-Z Analogy

Jerrod Carmichael says he “deeply regrets” criticizing Dave Chappelle during a profile for GQ back in 2022. At the time, get lamented that Chappelle’s “legacy is a bunch of opinions on trans sh*t” and called that “an odd hill to die on.” He walked back those comments while speaking with Charlamagne Tha God on The Breakfast Club on Tuesday.

“I deeply regret saying anything about Dave Chappelle to the press,” Carmichael admitted. “Honestly, from now on, any thoughts I have for Dave will be directed in a phone call to Dave. I’ll never do it again—I do apologize for that. I’m man enough to say that. I don’t want the attention, it’s gone on way too long.”

Jerrod Carmichael Attends Premiere Of His Reality Show

Despite the walk back of how he handled the situation, he still feels his point, in context, is valid. “The criticism that I had had nothing to do with the morality of the joke, had nothing to do with the ethics of the joke, that’s something that’s also been misreported,” he explained. “The criticism I had was that of a fan, someone who respects him so much that I want him to focus his genius on a wide range of topics. I think that it started being really, really focused on one thing. I’ll say this, I’m also a big fan of JAY-Z. If JAY-Z made three albums about trans people, I’d be like ‘Hey, what’s going on with JAY?’”

Jerrod Carmichael Addresses Controversial “Slave Play” Joke

Jerrod Carmichael’s new HBO series has mostly been a hit among fans since premiering last month. One joke about the comedian and his white boyfriend, however, recently sparked outrage among viewers. “My boyfriend, he makes me smarter, he makes me read. I have so many books. Realistically I’m not gonna read all those books. He knows that. But the fact that I bought them says I love you. They’re little monuments around my apartment just like ‘look at this book from Amazon that I’m never gonna read,’” he said on an episode of the show. “I sometimes joke to him that our relationship is like that of a slave and a master’s son  — who, like, teaches me how to read by candlelight.”

The controversial concept of race-based sexual slave play didn’t sit right with many, prompting Carmichael to receive a great deal of backlash. According to him, however, people are taking things completely out of context. He addressed the public’s reaction to the joke during his recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, clarifying that the joke wasn’t actually about sex at all.

Jerrod Carmichael Says His Joke Was Taken Out Of Context

“It made it seem like I was talking like I’m into some type of race, sexual slavery roleplay with my boyfriend, which is untrue. It’s so false,” he said of the backlash. “It has nothing to do with my boyfriend, it has nothing to do with the sex that we have. It has nothing to do with sex. It’s something people have been reporting on. It’s about my boyfriend reading so much, he makes me feel insecure about my level of reading.”

Jerrod Carmichael Race Play Joke Reactions Prove Social Media Isn’t Feeling Him Right Now

Many of today’s most popular comedians have relied on shock to sell tickets at one point or another. That’s exactly the era Jerrod Carmichael seems to be in this year. The filmmaker/entertainer debuted a new show on HBO earlier this spring, and the first episode quickly went viral thanks to an appearance from Tyler, The Creator. In that video, the rapper’s friend recalls admitting his feelings for the Flower Boy artist, sharing that a lack of reaction from Tyler left Carmichael in his feelings. Rather than comfort his friend, the former laughed in his face while reflecting on labelling him a “stupid b**ch” instead of addressing the emotion between them.

Now, the 37-year-old is trending online again after more controversy on his reality series. Earlier this week, Carmichael spoke about being in an interracial relationship. Apparently, he finds race play to be a fun way to connect with his partner. “I sometimes joke with him that our relationship is like that of a slave and the master’s son,” the North Carolina native told his uncomfortable audience.

NEXT CALLER!”

Social Media Reactions to Race Play “Joke” Pour In

“Jerrod Carmichael is a self-hating narcissist. He hated how Tyler didn’t validate his feelings and joked about it, [then] goes and [does] the same thing to his boyfriend???” one user on Twitter/X observed. “HBO can’t give us season 2 of ‘Watchmen’ and ‘Lovecraft Country’ because some White folks were uncomfortable,” another person pointed out. “Instead they give us JERROD CARMICHAEL admitting he likes playing a slave and sucking on White toes.” Read more social media reactions to the “joke” below, and check back in with HNHH later for more music/pop culture news updates.

Hollywood Foreign Press Association President Was Left “Shocked” And “Upset” With Jerrod Carmichael’s Golden Globes Monologue

Jerrod Carmichael is set to host the 80th Golden Globe Awards in January.

Last week, comedian Jerrod Carmichael shocked audience members with his opening monologue for the 2023 Golden Globes. According to an insider, the president of the HFPA, Helen Hoehne, was “shocked” and “upset” with Carmichael’s monologue.

“The whole thing was so awkward and uncomfortable,” one insider said. Another added, “The show needs to be fun, and it didn’t feel fun.” Another simply said: “What did you expect?”

In the monologue, he explained how he got to host the awards show, saying it was due to him being black. He also called out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for not having a Golden Globes last year because they came under fire for not having a single Black person on the board.

“I am your host, Jerrod Carmichael, and I’ll tell you why I’m here…I’m here ‘cause I’m Black,” the 35-year-old comedian said. “This show, the Golden Globe Awards, did not air last year because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association—which I won’t say they were a racist organization, but they didn’t have a single Black member until George Floyd died. So, do with that information what you will.”

He went on to say that he was offered $500,000 to host the awards show and Hoehne wanted to meet with Carmichael to talk about the recent diverse initiatives the HFPA instituted in light of their controversy. The comedian called Hoehne’s meeting a “trap” and declined her invitation. Sources also say that Hoehne was “consoled” near the ballroom bar that night.

Hoehne wasn’t the only person upset with what Carmichael had to say. Whitney Houston’s estate, as well as many people on social media, were angered by the comedian’s Whitney Houston joke. Carmichael had said that the place where the awards ceremony took place, the Beverly Hilton Hotel, was the same place where Whitney Houston died in 2011. In response, Whitney’s sister-in-law, Pat Houston, said the joke was in “poor taste.”

Whitney Houston’s Estate Upset At Joke Jerrod Carmichael Made About Late Singer At Golden Globes

Jerrod Carmichael is set to host the 80th Golden Globe Awards in January.

Jerrod Carmichael stirred a little bit of controversy over his hosting gig at the 2023 Golden Globes. His monologue about the racism behind the Golden Globes and the Hollywood Foreign Press left many in the audience quiet, and while his other jokes about Will Smith and telling the crowd to “shut the f**k up” garnered laughs, one joke didn’t sit well with others.

During the broadcast, the 35-year-old comedian made a joke about the late legendary singer Whitney Houston.

“Alright you guys, we are back, we are pressed for time but they wanted me to shout out the venue we’re in,” Carmichael said following a commercial break. “So we are here, live, from the hotel that killed Whitney Houston, the Beverly Hilton, you guys—so uh, that’s very exciting.”

Pat Houston, Whitney’s longtime manager and the sole executor of her estate, told TMZ that she denounced the joke and said it was “in poor taste.”

“The Whitney Houston Estate is disappointed in the joke, and felt it was in poor taste.”

Whitney Houston was found unresponsive in a bathtub in the Beverly Hilton on February 11, 2012. The L.A. County Coroner’s Office said attributed her death to drowning and the “effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use.”

Houston’s estate was not the only ones mad at Carmichael’s joke. Many people even took to social media to slam the comedian for the joke as well.
