Women’s World Cup: Jamaica Makes History With Knockouts Qualification

Jamaica made history at the 2023 Women’s World Cup as they qualify for the knockout stage. The Reggae Girlz finished second in Group F following a 0-0 draw with Brazil. In their other two group-stage matches, the team drew France 0-0 and beat Panama 1-0. In qualifying for the Round of 16, Jamaica made it out of the group stage for the first time. At their World Cup debut in 2019, the Reggae Girlz lost all three matches, including a 3-0 loss to Brazil. Furthermore, they become the first Caribbean nation to qualify for the knockout stages in the history of the tournament.

It’s a truly amazing feat for a team that just weeks before the tournament was fighting its national soccer association over discriminatory treatment and unpaid wages. Despite this, the 43rd-ranked nation in the world put on a masterful defensive display in a tough group. They kept clean sheets against two top-ten nations and by holding Brazil to a single point, sent the South American giants home before the knockouts for the first time since 1995. Jamaica will face the winners of Group H in the Round of 16.

World Gives Reggae Girlz Their Flowers

The soccer world overflowed with joy for Jamaica as the final whistle blew in Melbourne. “History👏🏿 Congrats Girls 🇯🇲🙌🏿 #ReggaeGirlz,” wrote Jamaican athletics legend Usain Bolt on X. The result also comes a day after the island nation celebrated its national day of emancipation. Jamaica will celebrate its national independence day later this week on August 6.

However, for many soccer fans, the result came with a tinge of sadness. With Brazil eliminated the legendary international career of Marta officially came to an end. Marta confirmed that the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand would be her last. “Yes, it will be my last World Cup. We have to understand that a time comes for us to prioritize other things. I just have to be thankful to have lived all those years in the national team. To have the opportunity to go to another World Cup, a sixth one, for me is something surreal.” Widely considered one of the greatest soccer players of all time, Marta had been a Brazilian international since 2002.

BandMan Kevo Fined In Jamaica For Dangerous Driving

Chicago rapper BandMan Kevo has seemingly gotten himself into hot water in Jamaica. A video has surfaced of the musician driving erratically on the roads of the Caribbean nation. While the video is not exactly 4K, Kevo reportedly struck two cars while transporting 16 people to his villa for a vacation. It is unknown if anyone was injured during the incidents that Kevo wasn reportedly involved in.

No matter how erratically he drove, it seems he could not escape the long arm of Jamaican law enforcement. Kevo was reportedly arrested, charged, and released for his dangerous driving. It appears that Kevo will not face jail time. However, he will have to pay for the damage to the cars he hit. Kevo published a brief video about being arrested but has since returned to posting vacation snaps.

Kevo Fined For Dangerous Driving

A compilation of Kevo’s very bad day on the road was uploaded to Instagram by DJ Akademiks. However, there is little more to the story . Kevo was detained and released, with Akademiks reporting that the rapper had to pay for the damage he caused. This did not deter Kevo, who later posted a picture of him posing with ATVs. The caption read “When you a hustler and you put God first you gone always bounce back ‼🤷‍♂️”. Despite this, the comments on the video are more interesting, as they appear to somewhat defend Kevo’s erratic driving.

“I was in a taxi in Jamaica and the driver was bending corners on a cliff going 50, passing other cars by an inch and calmly telling us about how they eat and use goats as currency 😭them mfers different you couldn’t pay me to drive out there with an entire nation of stun drivers behind the wheel” wrote one commenter. “Driving in Jamaica really like crash bandicoot” replied rapper Cochise. Road accidents are the 13th most-common cause of death in Jamaica. Many of the nation’s road accidents are due to excessive speeding. Where was the worst driving you’ve experienced? Chance The Rapper Visit US Embassy In Jamaica

Chance The Rapper is bringing the Black Star Line Festival to Jamaica. Last year, Vic Mensa and Chance announced the original festival, which was to take place in Ghana. At the time, Chance and Vic accompanied eight Chicago students to Ghana, aiming to educate them about their origins. It marked their second trip there together in 2022. The two Chicago-born artists revealed their plans for The Black Star Line Festival at the flagship location of Free The Youth in July. The festival ended up bringing out 50,000 attendees in Ghana and featured performances by Erykah Badu, Jeremih, and T-Pain.

In a press release about the festival, the duo explained the meaning behind it and the inspiration for the name. “Founded in 1919, and operated by Black people, the [Black Star Line] would link America, the Caribbean and Africa, to global shipping and tourism opportunities,” they explained. “The Black Star Line was a symbol of pride, not only for Africans, but also for Black people in all ports of call. After nearly 40 years, the Ghanian government launched their fleet with the same name, in homage to Marcus Garvey, and even added a black star to the country’s new flag.”

Bringing The Black Star Line To Jamaica

Back in March, Chance The Rapper spoke about future plans for the festival in an interview on The Tonight Show. “We’re actually thinking about hosting the next one in Kingston, Jamaica,” he said during the interview. “We’re still working it out in our heads. And we love the city of Accra and Ghana and West Africa as a whole. We just want to continue to, like, create community in other spaces.” It would appear those plans are well under way now since Chance stopped by the US Embassy in Jamaica to talk about it.

The official Twitter account for the Jamaican US Embassy tweeted out a photo of Chance’s visit to the office. The photo features a friendly smile from the ambassador as he shakes hands with the rapper. “Ambassador Perry met with @ChanceTheRapper as part of his birthday trip to Jamaica,” the tweet read. “The two discussed the rapper’s upcoming plans to host the Black Star Line Festival in Jamaica.” What do you think about Chance and Vic expanding the Black Star Line Festival? Who do you hope performs this time around? Let us know in the comments!

Rick Ross Has Some Fun On The Water In Jamaica

Rick Ross seems to have enjoyed his time in Jamaica. Ross was in the country to perform at the Sandz Caribbean Music Festival over the weekend. Ross was one of the headliners at the festival. Additionally, Ross could be seen on social media taking in the many sights and sounds Jamaica has to offer. In addition to his music career, Ross is perhaps best known for his love of luxury items. However, that doesn’t mean the “hustlin’” rapper can’t enjoy more down-to-earth activities as well.

DJ Akademiks recently took to Instagram to share a video of Ross’s trip to the Caribbean country. The video shows Ross and two other men tubing while a fourth man drives the boat. Ross’s Jamaican adventure was clearly a success. There are many tourist attractions in Jamaica to occupy one’s time. But these activities often have little resemblance to the day-to-day life of Jamaicans. However, Ross was intent on getting an authentic Jamaican experience during his trip. Indeed, he held a press conference shortly after his arrival to discuss the activities he wanted to partake in. “I just want to absorb that real Jamaican vibe,” he said. “I let everybody know as soon as I land, I want to go by the best fish spot,”

Additionally, Ross also discussed his desire go rafting in Jamaica’s famous waters. “I told them the next day I want to go ride water rafting, I want some real curry chicken and oxtails. I want live to life. We only have one life.” Elsewhere, photos were taken of Ross enjoying a drink on the beach. Other highlights from the trip include a humorous mix-up. One fan mistook Ross for fellow hip-hop superstar Drake. However, Rozay responded to the case of mistaken identity by claiming he and Drake are identical twins.

Furthermore, Ross clearly has an appreciation for Jamaican culture. In 2020, he collaborated with Bob Marley’s grandson, Skip Marley, on the track “Make Me Feel.” Additionally, last year, Ross was filmed trying his hand at a Jamaican accent during a recording session. Let us know what you think of Ross’ vacation, in the comments below.

Drake Labels Rick Ross His “Identical Twin”

Drake referred to Rick Ross as his identical twin in a post on Instagram, Sunday. The 47-year-old rapper had shared a video in which a fan in Jamaica mistook him for Drake. “@champagnepapi they need you in Jamaica,” Ross captioned the video.

In the clip, Ross asks the fan who he is, to which they reply, “Drake.” “Incorrect,” Ross replied before letting them he’s “the big belly rude boy, true ting dis.” Drake shared the clip on his IG Story writing, “At least they know we identical twins @richforever.”

Ross was in the country to perform at the Sandz Caribbean Music Festival over the weekend. Ahead of the performance, he expressed his excitement to be in Jamaica during a press conference. “I just want to absorb that real Jamaican vibe you know. I let everybody know as soon as I land, I want to go by the best fish spot,” Ross said. He added: I told them the next day I want to go ride water rafting, I want some real curry chicken and oxtails. I want live to life. We only have one life.”

Drake and Ross have collaborated numerous times over the years, including on the singles, “Aston Martin Music,” “Stay Schemin,” “Lord Knows,” “Gold Roses,” “Diced Pineapples” and “Money in the Grave,” among others. Back in 2021, following their “Lemon Pepper Freestyle” collaboration, Ross even mentioned working on a collaborative project together. “Well, me and Drizzy, we may have spoken within the last 48 hours,” Ross told Complex. “But it’s only so much I can say other than this is the closest or the realest he’s ever been. He’s wrapping up his project and I’m in the same space.”

While he hasn’t teamed up with Ross for a while now, Drake seems to be gearing up to release more new music soon. He recently dropped off the single, “Search & Rescue,” on which he samples Kim Kardashian talking about relationship troubles with Kanye West. “I didn’t come this far, just to come this far and not be happy, remember that,” she says in the audio clip, which is taken from the 2021 season finale of Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

Popcaan Shares New Single “Bend It Over”

Popcaan is revving up for the deluxe release of his latest project, Great Is He. Released through OVO, the Jamaican dancehall star returned with a new body of work to set the tone for 2023. With singles like “We Caa Done” and the Burna Boy-assisted, “Aboboyaa,” Popcaan delivered a body of work that’s best fit for the summer. However, there’s no doubt that with the shivering winter weather, we needed a record like Great Is He to provide us with a shred of hope that summer will come soon.

However, it looks like Popcaan is now gearing up to drop off a deluxe edition in the near future. This morning, he came through with his latest single, “Bend It Over” to kick off the campaign. The bouncy and breezy anthem finds Popcaan divulging romantic and sexual fantasies through honeyed harmonies and infectious lyrics. Though he hasn’t revealed many details about Great Is He deluxe, Popcaan confirmed a March 31st release date.

Popcaan’s “Great Is He” Deluxe Is On The Way

While the dancehall scene thrives off of the release of singles rather than bodies of work, it appears that the “Skeleton Cartier” artist aimed to make a statement to his peers with Great Is He. During an interview with Crack Magazine, Popcaan said that he’s urging fellow Jamaican artists to consider delivering fleshed-out albums instead of one-off songs. “No one’s doing it,” he said. “I try to appeal to my Jamaican artists, telling all of them to put out more albums. People just see Jamaican music as singles.”

Perhaps the most shocking aspect of the interview came when Popcaan suggested that he would be parting ways with OVO Sound in the near future to pursue his career as an independent artist. “I have so much music. The label can be weird sometimes. I love the label, but I don’t like them…But I’ll be independent soon,” he explained. Though Popcaan didn’t confirm when this would happen, we imagine that Great Is He deluxe could be one of his final offerings on the Drake co-founded imprint.

Skillibeng Taps Nardo Wick For “16CHOPPA” Single

Jamaican dancehall artist Skillibeng just recruited Nardo Wick for their single, “16CHOPPA.” If you’re unfamiliar with the 25-year-old, he’s one of the hottest names in dancehall right now, known for his creative fusions with hip-hop tropes. Moreover, this new track mixes tropical rhythms with trap-style drums and other production elements. What’s more is that the “Who Want Smoke?” MC matches Skillibeng’s energy and vocal tone with his guest verse. Overall, “16CHOPPA” is a fitting introduction to dancehall for hip-hop fans that are looking for somewhere to dive in. Still, the Jamaican artist is idiosyncratic and creative enough in his performance to give the track an authentic feel. While it might not be your cup of tea at first, this song’s melodies and hypnotic drum patterns will seep in your mind for some time.

Furthermore, a lot of that stickiness comes from Skillibeng’s unique vocal inflections on “16CHOPPA.” For example, throughout his verses and choruses, he keeps a consistently nasal tone, going from fast words to drawn-out syllables. For outsiders to this genre or culture, the “accent” might throw some people off, and the high pitch doesn’t help. However, if it does, it’s an indication of their still-burgeoning taste, not of Skillibeng’s lack of talent. In fact, his delivery on the track is charismatic and much more of a unique approach to the flexing, boastful, playboy-style bars we’re used to.

However, on that note, Nardo comes through with some pretty cheeky wordplay and entertaining descriptions in his verse. Moreover, his style and understated delivery fit well with “16CHOPPA”‘s production. The light and simple keys, subtly morphing bass, and incredibly sharp drum kit is a checklist the Wickman’s crossed off often. Let us know what you think of Nardo’s performance on Skillibeng’s “16CHOPPA,” and what you thought about the whole track. Also, if you haven’t heard the track yet, you can find it on your preferred streaming service. Don’t forget to check out some standout bars, and come back to HNHH for the best new music each week.

Quotable Lyrics

How many shots did you hear? Never said a whole lotta
Big dog like Clifford, your bitch I dig her

usain bolt olympics 200m

Usain Bolt is missing nearly $13 million after becoming the victim of a scam. Bolt’s legal team stated $12.7 million is missing from his account, which was established with a private investment firm in Jamaica.

According to CBS News, Bolt’s attorney, Linton P. Gordon, supplied a letter to Stocks & Securities Limited requesting that the money be returned. $12,000 is what’s left in Bolt’s account.

“If this is correct, and we are hoping it is not, then a serious act of fraud, larceny, or a combination of both have been committed against our client,” the letter reads.

Bolt and his attorneys will seek civil and criminal action if the money isn’t returned. The firm has been given a deadline of 10 days.

The firm is currently under investigation, and its website directs urgent inquiries to the Financial Services Commission of Jamaica.

“We understand that clients are anxious to receive more information and assure you that we are closely monitoring the matter throughout all the required steps and will alert our clients of the resolution as soon as that information is available,” the firm said.
