Lil Nas X’s Response To Religious Backlash Over His Single ‘J Christ’ Isn’t The Sanctified Apology Critics Were Looking For

Just when the public began to turn down the flames on the “Doja Cat is a Satanist” claims, Lil Nas X entered public discourse to ignite yet another online holy war. After announcing his musical baptism and (phony) biblical studies plans, Lil Nas X unveiled his latest single, “J Christ.”

From the track’s artwork recreating Jesus’ crucifixion to the official video (in which the devil makes a cameo), religious leaders have been clamoring for Lil Nas X to repent for his artistic choices. However, that’s not going to happen anytime soon. On January 29, during an appearance on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, Lil Nas X doubled down on his decision. In response to the religious backlash sparked by the record, Lil Nas X held firm to his artistic vision.

“I’ve never been here, mentally and even physically, where… you push your art into the world, and it’s received negatively by the majority,” he said. “But then, like, also understanding why and having to see it through… I’m usually strategic with things, and I can kind of move the conversation.”

Lil Nas X admitted that the swift blowback was initially “depressing” but quickly added that those who are upset should be “mad with themselves.”

“Artistically, it was just supposed to be like, I’m returning… I’m back like [Jesus],” he added. “[But] it turned into this whole thing where it was me trying to dunk on Christians or something. That was never what it was. And then I looked at the video with me eating the communion or whatnot, and I was like, ‘Okay, this looks really bad on paper – this thing that I thought was just, like, a little jokey, fun video.’”

Lil Nas X previously took to Instagram to address the pushback.

Lil Nas X Makes Light Of “J Christ” Charting At “Funny Number” 69: “This Is Our Moment!”

Lil Nas X’s new single, “J Christ,” had a disappointing debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, landing at number 69. However, the controversial rapper is celebrating the placement on Twitter, describing it as a “funny number.”

“We did it boys! We reached the funny number. Be very proud of yourselves. This is our moment!” he wrote. Fans shared plenty of jokes in response as well. “In honor of your song going #69, you should 69 with 69 lucky fans!” one user replied. Another wrote: “We’re gagging at 69!! Nothing serious!”

The disappointing Hot 100 debut comes after Nas faced plenty of backlash for the music video associated with the song. Many voices on social media, including Boosie Badazz, felt it was disrespectful to Christianity. Nas eventually explained his thinking and apologized for some of his behavior while promoting the release. “I wanted to explain where my head at and where it’s been for the last week,” he said online. “First of all, when I did the artwork, I knew there would be some upset people, simply because religion is a very sensitive topic for a lot of people. But I also didn’t mean to mock — this wasn’t like a, ‘F*ck you to you people! F*ck you to Christians!’ It was not that. It was literally me saying, ‘Oh, I’m back like Jesus.’”

Nas also apologized for a video of him eating several communion wafers. “I will say, though, with the communion video with me eating the crackers and juice, I thought that video was gonna lighten the mood, to take it down less serious … I do apologize for that,” he added. “I am sorry for that. Lil Nas X’s New Single Scores Middling Hot 100 Debut

For an artist of Lil Nas X’s caliber songs are expected to be massive hits right away. That wasn’t the case with his new single “J CHRIST.” The song just hit the Hot 100 this week but was far lower down the chart than many expected. The same week that Ariana Grande debuted her new song “yes, and?” at the very top spot, “J CHRIST” just landed at number 69. Some of the rapper’s previous hits like “THAT’S WHAT I WANT” started off slow before becoming smash successes. But for the long-awaited lead single for his second album, many fans are underwhelmed.

Another element hampering the debut of “J CHRIST” is the new 21 Savage album american dream. The project debuted 14 of its 15 songs on the Hot 100, 13 of which placed above “J CHRIST” on the charts. Two of those songs “redrum” and “nee-nah” landed inside the top 10. Two additional songs “all of me” and “n.h.i.e” place in the top 20. “J CHRIST” has racked up more than 11 million streams on Spotify and its music video has over 12 million views, so the song is clearly getting some attention. It remains to be seen whether the song will fade from the Hot 100 quickly or become a sleeper hit over time.

Later this week Lil Nas X has a new documentary coming out. For the film he let cameras follow him on his first world tour last year documenting the journey. In addition to taking fans behind-the-scenes of his tour, the doc will also tell the story of the pop star’s rise to success. In the trailers for the new documentary he discusses his overnight rise to stardom. The documentary will be available on HBO and Max on January 27.

Another day, another rapper is mad at Lil Nas X about his “J CHRIST” single. This time, Louisiana rapper Hurricane Chris gives a strong message to Lil Nas X.

“Find you something else to play with besides Jesus,” Hurricane Chris said. “Don’t play with nobody religion. That’s some down bad ass shit.

He added, “You think just because you have your community behind you, that you can do anything at this point? You got this fucked up. We slide behind Jesus.”

Lil Nas X is responding to the backlash for his “J CHRIST” single. Hitting Instagram, Lil Nas X delivered a message claiming he “messed up really bad this time.”

“I can act unbothered all I want, but it’s definitely taken a mental toll on me,” Lil Nas X said. “I’m not some evil demon guy trying to destroy everybody’s values and stuff like that. That’s not me.”

He added, “When I did the artwork, I knew there would be some upset people simply because religion is a very sensitive topic for a lot of people. But I also didn’t mean to mock — this wasn’t a fuck you to the Christians. It was literally me saying I’m back like Jesus.”

Boosie Badazz Thinks Lil Nas X Is “Going To Hell” In New Clap-Back To “J CHRIST”

While other artists start their rollouts little by little, Lil Nas X’s new single “J CHRIST” proves that he always kicks it off by front-loading all the controversy. Moreover, his song and music video prompted a lot of backlash for his depictions, treatments, and overall references of Jesus Christ and the Christian religion as a whole. This was from devout believers, atheists, members of other creeds, and regular folks alike, with just as many people from all these groups and more seeing no problem with it. But one God-fearing man in the rap game took particular issue with this move: Boosie Badazz.

“THIS ‘Whatever’ IS SO DISRESPECTFUL ITS SAD SMH,” he expressed on social media about the song and music video on Friday (Januay 12). Three days later, Boosie is back with a little bit more to say, and it seems to relate to Lil Nas X’s statements responding to all the backlash and uproarious debate about his art. “HE LYING HE KNOW WHAT HE DOING!!” he expressed in an Instagram comment, presumably on a post covering Nas’ responses. “I BET HE WOULDNT DO THIS TO JEWS [100 emoji] HES GOING TO HELL.”

Taking to Instagram on Monday, Nas clarified his intentions with the video and apologized for the clip of him throwing back several cups of communion wine and wafers.

“I wanted to not necessarily apologize but I wanted to explain where my head’s at and where it’s been for the past week,” he began. “First of all, when I did the artwork I knew there would be some upset people or whatnot, simply because religion is a very sensitive topic for a lot of people. But I also didn’t mean to mock. This wasn’t a ‘fuck you’ to you people, ‘fuck you to the Christians.’ It was not that. It was literally me saying, ‘Oh, I’m back like Jesus,’ that was the whole thing.”

Lil Nas X’s ‘J Christ’ Song And Video Are ‘Fantastic,’ According To A Church Of Satan Leader, So, There’s That

Last Friday, January 12, Lil Nas X sent seismic waves across the music and pop cultural landscapes by releasing “J Christ,” his first single in two years. Before it even arrived, “J Christ” upset some people because of Lil Nas X’s heavy usage of Christian imagery, going so far as to cosplay Jesus Christ’s crucifixion in the song’s cover art. He billed the song as “dedicated to the man who had the greatest comeback of all time.”

Uproxx’s Aaron Williams defended Lil Nas X against criticisms that he’s “mocking” Christianity, and unsurprisingly, Lil Nas X is receiving loud praise from Church Of Satan Magister David Harris.

TMZ relayed, “While certain Christian rappers and groups have expressed disgust with the song and video, the Church of Satan loves it … magister David Harris tells TMZ he’s giving the video a thumbs up, calling the imagery ‘fantastic.’”

So, there’s that.

Lil Nas X previously received unsolicited support from Harris in 2021 when his devil-themed “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” video, as per Rolling Stone at the time. “J Christ” is presumably the lead single for a forthcoming Lil Nas X album — among Uproxx’s “Most Anticipated Albums Of 2024” — which would be his first since his September 2021 debut LP, Montero.

Lil Nas X is receiving support from the Church of Satan for his new video “J CHRIST.” In the video, Lil Nas X stretches himself on the cross and beats the devil in a game of one-one-one.

In response, magister David Harris of the Church of Satan told TMZ he thought the video was “fantastic.” For clarity, the Church of Satan doesn’t uplift Satan but instead highlights being your true self, living life to the fullest, and personal achievement.

On Friday (Jan 12.), Lil Nas X officially marked the dawn of his next era with the release of his first single in two years, “J CHRIST.”

Co-written by Lil Nas X himself alongside Omer Fedi, Mike Levy (Gesaffelstein), and Blake Slatkin, the song showcases a blend of creativity with production by Fedi, Gesaffelstein, and Lil Nas X.

Accompanying the single is the release of the official video, which not only serves as Lil Nas X’s solo directorial debut but follows a story he crafted. The “J CHRIST” visual is a gleefully subversive journey, featuring Lil Nas X conquering both heaven’s gates and hell’s fires. The video was shot in Mexico City.

As he asserts his faith and sails through a flooded rapture, Lil Nas X proudly declares his chosen direction: “THIS WAY.” The artist is forging a new path, expressing his spirituality uniquely, and signaling a fresh beginning in his musical journey.
