“STRONGEST LINK IN THE WORLD #OBFIL @legends limited edition Rocket Hoodie,” Quavo wrote on Instagram. “All proceeds benefiting The Rocket Foundation. Takeoff Forever.”
Late last month, Quavo released “Honey Bun,” a new song and music video. After releasing his single “Greatness” in February, the QC superstar dropped this song as his second single of the year.
Hitting Instagram, Quavo shared a photo, seemingly recording a music video. Dropping off the title in the caption, Quavo revealed the creation is “#ForTake.”
Twitter came through with some strong reactions to Quavo’s newest track “Honey Bun,” which he previously teased. Moreover, many took special note of his interpolation of the now infamous chorus on Drake & 21 Savage’s “Rich Flex,” AKA the “Can you do somethin’ for me?” flow. Over a bell-heavy and menacing trap instrumental, the Migos icon takes a more boastful, combative, and aggressive tone than his previous singles, both lyrically and delivery-wise. However, not everyone loved the homage to the Her Loss hit, and some criticized the song for other reasons.
“Quavo did not say honey bun can you do sum for me i know he lying,” one user wrote on Twitter. Whether they found it corny, unfitting, or straight-up bad, a lot of people had different reasons to criticize the hook. Despite that reaction, many are missing out on some of the song’s other notable features. For example, the Georgia native raps, “I don’t wanna hear no sorry for my loss,” as well as “They wanna see my emotions, I ain’t smilin’ at all.”
Quavo’s New Single Leaves Fans Divided
With those bars, Quavo seems to address how people approached him following the tragic loss of his nephew and fellow Migos member Takeoff. Moreover, the process of grief is always a difficult and personal one, and being a celebrity can dampen or intrude on that process. As such, there is much more to “Honey Bun” than the chorus might have you believe, even though it is its most easily identifiable characteristic. Another smaller reason why some fans expressed disappointment is because Yeat was rumored to also appear on the track, as they were spotted together around its announcement.
Meanwhile, the 31-year-old was also in the news this week due to fling rumors with singer and actress Chlöe, which she sort of denied. While she didn’t necessarily confirm the rumors, she didn’t outright deny them either. It was during a conversation with Latto, and they labeled him a “really nice guy” and complimented his locs. Regardless of that gossip, fans’ attention’s clearly turned to this divisive single and its reference to one of last year’s biggest hits. In January, Quavo shared “Without You,” a powerful tribute to Takeoff, his late nephew and fellow Migos member. He took the song to the Grammys for the In Memoriam segment. The lyrics found Quavo in mourning: “Tears rolling down my eyes / Can’t tell you how many times I cried / Days ain’t the same without you,” he sings. Now, he’s back with another song for Takeoff.
“Honey Bun” is more playful than the last one; it unexpectedly references Drake and 21 Savage’s recent hit “Rich Flex”: “Honey bun, can you do somethin’ for me? (Do somethin’) / Can you go automatic just for me?” Quavo sings in the same melody. This time, he’s not asking for sympathy: “I don’t wanna hear no sorry for my loss,” he raps.
Last month, he also unveiled the song “Greatness.” He alluded to the end of Migos, rapping, “Came in, swept the game like a storm with the motherf*ckin’ flow, Take’ did that / So don’t ask ’bout the group, he gone, we gone…it can’t come back.”
The other week, he also went on NBC’s That’s My Jam to perform a humorous cover of Lil Jon and The Eastside Boyz’s “Get Low.”
Quavo is someone who has been through a lot of personal tragedy as of late. Just a few months ago, he lost a family member and best friend in Takeoff. Subsequently, there was a lot of chatter about how he would be able to continue his career. However, the Atlanta artist has done solo work in the past, so there were reasonable assumptions that he would be back with some tracks of his own. Following some tribute tracks, Quavo began teasing a new menacing-sounding single called “Honey Bun.” If you have been following Quavo on social media, you know that he was very hyped about this release.
Moreover, there were some rumblings that the song could feature Yeat. Honey bun is a saying that Yeat says in a lot of his tracks. Not to mention, he even left a reply on one of Quavo’s social media posts. However, the song has officially been released, and it is clear that the rapper has kept the track for himself. When you consider the subject matter at hand here, it is totally understandable as to why he would make that decision.
Quavo Sounds As Focused As Ever
Immediately, you can tell that Quavo sounds focused on the track. His energy is immaculate as he delivers a menacing flow that complements the dark production. Furthermore, he drops some bars about his emotional state and how he has nothing to smile about. He is clearly angry about things that have taken place, and he is channeling that into his music. Early in the song, you even get a nice Drake interpolation that we won’t spoil for you. You will know it when you hear it.
At the time of writing this, there is no telling if and when Quavo will drop a new solo album. However, it is known that he is making music again, and if he keeps down this path, we are in for some legendary stuff. Let us know what you think of the song, in the comments below. With the tragic death of Takeoff last November came what seems to be the end of the Migos. While we’ll likely never hear the Atlanta trio on a track together again, both Offset and Quavo have been putting in work on their own projects, doing their part to keep their fallen comrade’s name alive. As of late, the 31-year-old has been hinting at another single on the way, and on Tuesday (March 28), he unveiled the track’s cover art.
In a photo uploaded to @qualitycontrolmusic’s Instagram page, a lineup of SUVs spells out the letter “H” in a parking lot. We know that the tribute to Quavo’s nephew is titled “Honey Bun,” and that it drops this coming Friday (March 31), but other details remain sparse at this time. The lyricist’s feed suggests that fans may see an accompanying music video along with the single’s premiere, though we have no confirmation at this time.
That teaser arrived in the form of a black and white photo that sees Quavo staying warm in a fur jacket while smoking a blunt in the chilly outdoors. In the caption of that post, he confirmed that “Honey Bun” is “#ForTake,” who was shot to death in Houston last November following an altercation during a night out. Of course, this won’t be the “Slippery” hitmaker’s only recent arrival. Just a few weeks ago, he shared, “Greatness,” which provided answers to several of his listener’s most burning questions.
“Never forget that the Migos amazin’ / Look at the ice and the knots in my pants, you know that them young n*ggas made it,” he reflects on the early days of his career, spent working with Offset and Takeoff. “Came in, swept the game like a storm with the muthaf*cking flow, n*gga, Take did that / So don’t ask about the group, he gone, we gone, young n*gga it can’t come back, damn,” Quavo later adds, making it abundantly clear that the group is done for good. Revisit “Greatness” below, and let us know if you’re excited to hear “Honey Bun” this Friday in the comments.
