DC rap mainstay Goonew was shot and killed a few weeks ago, but over the weekend, the 24-year-old late rapper’s body was propped up on stage at a DC nightclub for a memorial service, much to the disgust of some critics and attendees.

Complete with an iced-out watch, hoodie and crow, Goonew’s embalmed body was on display at Bliss Nightclub, with many calling the viewing disrespectful, while others say that this is the way Goonew, whose real name is Markelle Marrow, to go out.

The nightclub apologized, saying that they were aware of the memorial service, but had no idea that an actual corpse would be on the stage.

One of the most impactful legal voices to weigh in on legal and criminal cases in Hip Hop is Moe Gangat, who has given his POV on cases such as NBA YoungBoy and Casanova 2X, but Gangat has some integral speculations about the Megan Thee Stallion/Tory Lanez case that many may find shocking.

According to Gangat’s IG post, “Two extremely interesting facts that came out about the Tory Lanez case”. “First, the police have admitted into evidence, they’ve testified, that the other woman who was involved here, they tested her hand for gunpowder shot residue, and she had gun powder residue on it, suggesting that she may have been the shooter. Number two, there was an eyewitness, somebody who was a third party who saw the whole thing and he said, ‘I saw two men and another woman beating on Meg.’ As for who pulled the trigger? He said, ‘I don’t know but I did see the muzzle flash go off and the other woman was the one closest to the muzzle flash.’”

During yesterday’s hearing, Lanez was cited for violating the no contact order with Megan Thee Stallion handed down by the judge. He was taken into custody and forced to pay a $350 bail in order to be released.

The case will resume on September 14.

Today In Hip Hop History: Nas Released His Third LP ‘I Am’ 23 Years Ago

Screen Shot 2022 04 06 at 7.34.25 AM

Released by Columbia Records, Nas’ third album, I Am, debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album sold 470,000 copies in its first week and went on to be certified double platinum in the United States. The album was nominated in 2000 for Best Rap Album at the 43rd Grammy Awards.

Originally intended to be a double album titled I Am…The Autobiography, the album was arguably Nas’ most honest and poetic project at the time. Although the additional tracks were scrapped due to bootlegging of the original sessions, the intention for the theme and tone of the project can still be felt on the single-disc LP that was released.

Nas’ cover art has always been an iconic staple of his work. Usually consisting of his face superimposed over his native Queens, each cover has served as a visual representation of Nas as an artist. This particular cover was shot by famed portrait photographer Danny Hastings. In order to create the image of Nas’ face in the Pharaoh mask in a pre-Photoshop world, Hastings created a clay mold for Nas’ face (which in fact almost killed him when clay got lodged in his nostrils, nearly suffocating him).

This album wasn’t only popular in the United States. I Am… made appearances on music charts in Australia, Canada, Norway, France, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The two official singles from this project claimed spots on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “Nas Is Like..” peaked at #86 and “Hate Me Now” climbed a little higher to take the #62 spot.

After the release of this album, Nas went on to release seven more solo albums and two collaborative projects. Nas continues to perform and is known as one of the most prolific rappers of his or any generation. Take some time today to listen to this album appreciate the career of a living legend.

SIMONCHASALOW @SIMONCHASALOW J. COLE 24

J. Cole and his Dreamville team successfully launched their second Dreamville Festival in Raleigh this past weekend, welcoming 80,000 people from all over the world and generating a multi-million dollar economic impact for the state.

Dreamville Festival, the brand’s flagship music festival property, was successfully relaunched after a three-year hiatus, growing to become the largest music festival in the state of North Carolina and expanding to two days at the historic Dorothea Dix Park in Raleigh. This year’s event brought together local residents and visitors alike to enjoy outstanding music performances while visiting the historic Dorothea Dix Park, with a continuous emphasis on community, diversity, and inclusivity.

More than 60% of attendees had attended the festival in the previous year. This year’s attendees came from all 50 U.S. states, as well as Washington, D.C., and 14 overseas nations, demonstrating the global reach of the Dreamville brand.

Fans of all ages were treated to performances from some of today’s most sought-after music acts at Dreamville, which mixed stadium headliners with intriguing up-and-comers. J. Cole, the festival’s originator, crafted the lineup and the festival experience once again, with his headlining performance providing a genuinely unforgettable experience for fans who had been waiting for the festival’s return.

“Our Dreamville team is not only grateful for our incredible fans across the world who traveled to attend or livestreamed online, but also to the greater Raleigh community for welcoming our festival back with open arms. After being forced to sit out the last three years and now seeing all of the overwhelmingly positive feedback from this past weekend, we couldn’t be more excited about the future of the fest. See you next spring for Year 3,” said Dreamville Partner and Festival President Adam Roy.

The festival continued to provide an opportunity for J. Cole to give back to his home state, which has influenced him to become the successful and innovative musician he is today, as well as a cultural and economic impact that lasts long after the festival ends each spring. Attendees had access to a range of family-friendly activities and local vendors, nearly all of whom were based in Raleigh or the larger Triangle area, and the overall number of vendors was more than doubled from the previous year.

Guests could also enjoy site-wide art pieces selected by local arts nonprofit Artsplosure, a big Nonprofit and Community Organization Row dedicated to raising awareness for numerous local charity programs, and the launch of a sky-high Ferris wheel affording unsurpassed views of the city.

Coachella Organizers Were Surprised to Hear About YE’s Skipping the Show, Offer Well Wishes

Kanye West Italian Wedding

With less than two weeks to go before he was set to stage, Kanye West pulled out of Coachella. In response, Coachella organizers reveal they had no clue YE would pull out, but state they are not upset.

According to TMZ, Coachella planners have not found a replacement for the DONDA creator but also have no anger toward West’s decision to drop out. Instead, the organizers have expressed that they want YE to get better.

In an insane plot twist, Coachella organizers found out YE was pulling out via TMZ like the general public. A formal reason for YE’s withdrawal was not given.

Kanye West was to join Billie Eilish, Harry Styles, and Swedish House Mafia as headliners.

TMZ notes Travis Scott was scheduled to join Ye on stage during the performance, which is also believed to be called off.

Travis Scott was scheduled to participate in the 2022 festival but was pulled after the Astroworld Tragedy that claimed the lives of 10 people and injured over 300 others.

In February, YE threatened not to perform at Coachella until Eilish delivered an apology to Travis Scott. At a recent show, Eilish stopped to check on a fan who reportedly couldn’t breathe. According to Complex, Eilish said, “I wait for people to be OK until I keep going.” If you didn’t pick up the reference, Eilish is calling out Scott for the Astroworld Festival tragedies where Travis Scott performed through the outcries of fans who were trampled during the show. Hearing the words, Kanye hit Instagram with a message for Eilish.

“Come on Billie we love you,” Ye wrote. “Please apologize to Trav and to the families of people who lost their lives no one intended this to happen.”

Ye added, “Trav didn’t have any idea of what was happening when he was on stage and was very hurt by what happened and yes Trav will be with me at Coachella.”

Before ending the post, Ye asked for an apology. “Now I need Billie to apologize before I perform.”

Eilish chimed in at the comments: “Literally never said a thing about Travis. Was just helping a fan.” She has not issued an apology to date, but there is no direct association between the incident and Kanye’s recent decision.

Just last month, thousands signed a petition to remove Kanye West from the Coachella lineup. The Change-dot-org document was posted in response to Ye’s relentless targeting of his estranged ex-wife Kim Kardashian and boyfriend Pete Davidson. West was suspended from Instagram for 24 hours last week for posting racial slurs under a photo of “Daily Show” host Trevor Noah. He was also removed from the Grammys lineup due to his “concerning online behavior.”

R. Kelly Blasts Former Legal Team for Allowing Jurors Who May Have Seen ‘Surviving R. Kelly’

R. Kelly in Court federal child pornography

R. Kelly does not believe he was represented properly by his former legal team. The incarcerated Chicago singer was convicted of sex crimes in Brooklyn, New York. In a new report from the New York Daily News, Kells filed an affidavit that is critical of the job done by his ex-legal team when vetting jurors for his sex crimes case.

According to R. Kelly, there were jurors who possibly saw the shocking documentary Surviving R. Kelly.

“At certain points during jury selection, I did hear that some jurors may have seen the Surviving R. Kelly docuseries and that concerned me greatly,” Kelly wrote. “I raised my concerns with my attorneys but they shooed me off. I was nothing more than a bystander in the process. … There was no strategy involved in choosing the jurors that sat on my jury as far as I could tell. At least there was no trial strategy that involved my input.”

Kelly was convicted of each count he faced in his New York-based racketeering and sex trafficking case. He will be sentenced on May 4 and faces life behind bars.

R. Kelly’s Chicago trial has yet to start. Hoping for a different conclusion than what he is fighting in New York, Kelly hired Bill Cosby’s attorneys. In a telephone conference on February 17 with U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber, Kells said he wanted Jennifer Bonjean to represent him in the case, which is set for a jury trial on August 1, 2022.

In Chicago, Kelly is facing charges of federal child pornography and obstruction of justice. There are also separate aggravated criminal sexual abuse charges in Cook County, Illinois. He has two co-defendants, Derrel McDavid and Milton “June” Brown, who are long-time associates.
