Montell Jordan Opens Up About Beating Prostate Cancer: “Early Detection Saved My Life”

Screen Shot 2024 12 18 at 1.33.45 PM

R&B icon Montell Jordan, best known for his 1995 smash hit “This Is How We Do It,” recently shared his victorious journey of overcoming prostate cancer. Speaking with TMZ Hip-Hop, Jordan emphasized the importance of early detection and credited his faith for guiding him through the ordeal. “You wanna catch it before it catches you,” he declared.

On his 56th birthday (Dec. 3), the singer revealed he was diagnosed with early Stage 1 prostate cancer in January 2023. In a heartfelt video message, Jordan explained that early detection played a critical role in saving his life. He documented his entire journey, from diagnosis to treatment, to raise awareness and inspire others.

After extensively researching his options and turning to prayer, Jordan opted for a prostatectomy. A month after the procedure, he shared a sobering update: “Once [his prostate was] removed, there was more cancer found in what was removed. It was more aggressive. It was undetected. It was more like Stage 2, but they got it all.”

The singer celebrated being cancer-free and thanked both God and timely medical intervention. “Jesus saved my soul. Early detection helped save my life,” he stated.

Jordan urged everyone, especially men, to prioritize annual checkups. “Getting checked every year is super, super important,” he told TMZ. Just two weeks after his surgery, he returned to the stage to perform alongside Usher during the Anaheim stop of the Past Present Future tour.

Now a pastor and cancer advocate, Jordan has built a community to support fellow survivors and those still battling the disease. “I’m pastoring different people right now. Pastoring is loving people,” he explained. “We’re all in the same story, but we’re in different boats, and they don’t want anyone necessarily knowing what they’re navigating.”

Reflecting on his experience, Jordan offered this advice: “You can either check or you gon’ get checked. It’s gonna happen either way. You can be in control of it though.”

As he continues spreading awareness, Jordan is working on a documentary chronicling his journey. He invited fans to contribute to the project in lieu of birthday gifts, ensuring his message reaches as many people as possible.

Montell Jordan rose to fame in the mid-1990s with his platinum-selling debut single “This Is How We Do It,” which became an anthem of the era. Known for his smooth vocals and infectious party hits, Jordan followed up with tracks like “Somethin’ 4 Da Honeyz” and “Let’s Ride.” He eventually transitioned from music to ministry, using his platform to inspire and uplift others through faith and resilience.

Wendy Williams Out In Florida After Reports She Is “Permanently Incapacitated”

Wendy Williams made a rare public appearance amid ongoing concerns about her health and legal battles. The former talk show host was seen on Sunday (Dec. 15) in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, smiling as she sat in the back seat of a black SUV. She was reportedly picking up an order from Sho’nuff Oysters, according to a video shared on Instagram by blogger Antoine Edwards. Williams, 60, appeared polished and cheerful during the outing. She wore an army-green jacket, accessorized with several bracelets, and a striking ring. Her signature look included red lipstick and light brown hair styled with bangs. Accompanying her was her nephew, Travis Finnie, Edwards noted.

This sighting comes just days after her legal guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, described Williams’ condition as “permanently incapacitated” due to early-onset dementia. Morrissey made the statement in court documents filed on November 12 in New York, claiming Williams’ cognitive health had deteriorated. The filing was part of a lawsuit against A+E Networks over the Lifetime documentary Where Is Wendy Williams?, which explored her struggles with addiction and financial issues.

Wendy Williams Outside After “Permanently Incapacitated” Claims

According to Morrissey, Williams’ diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia and aphasia, which affects memory and behavior, was evident during the filming of the documentary. Despite her condition, the producers allegedly continued with the project, generating significant revenue. Morrissey contends that Williams was exploited, receiving only $82,000 for her involvement while the series profited millions. The lawsuit seeks additional compensation for Williams and requests that sensitive details about her health and private life be redacted to protect her dignity.

A+E Networks has denied wrongdoing, arguing that Morrissey failed to safeguard Williams during the production process. The network claims that Williams participated willingly and that Morrissey did not intervene or raise objections during the filming. The controversy adds to the growing concerns over Williams’ well-being as she remains under guardianship due to her declining health. While fans were heartened to see her smiling, the sighting also underscored the ongoing challenges the once-vibrant TV icon faces.

Hip Hop Economy: How Rap Made Weed Culture Cool and Lucrative

Screen Shot 2024 12 03 at 3.43.52 PM

Let’s talk about weed and rap. We know Hip Hop and cannabis have been intertwined for decades, but over the last 10 years, the relationship between hip hop and weed has evolved into a full-fledged cultural movement.

No one would argue what started as casual references in lyrics has grown into a lifestyle, with artists helping to normalize and even glamorize cannabis use.

Today, the influence of rap culture on the perception of marijuana is undeniable, making it “cool” while also adding to the growth, pun intended, of a lucrative cannabis industry.

Rap and Weed’s Humble Beginnings

This weed/rap relationship isn’t new. In the 1990s, iconic groups like Cypress Hill and artists like Snoop Dogg made marijuana a core part of their image. Think about it. Way before cannabis was legal in Cali. They were embodying the culture like it wasn’t a big deal.

Screen Shot 2024 12 03 at 3.45.01 PM

Method Man, a founding member of the Wu-Tang Clan, was a key figure in shaping cannabis culture through his early music and persona. His 1994 smash hit “How High” with Redman is an iconic anthem that celebrates the joys of smoking weed, becoming a cornerstone of stoner culture. Beyond music, Method Man continued to normalize and celebrate cannabis through films like How High (2001), where he and Redman played weed-loving college students. His consistent advocacy and humorous, laid-back approach to cannabis have not only influenced generations of fans but also positioned him as a cultural icon within the weed-rap movement.

Screen Shot 2024 12 03 at 3.44.24 PM

Fast forward to the 2010s and pretty much now, and the narrative around weed shifted from rebellion to lifestyle. That’s a fact. Then cannabis was no longer just about getting high—it became intertwined within the fabric of self-expression and creativity within the hip hop world.

Weed, Lyrics and Segue into Dollars

Make no mistake, one of the most influential figures in the weed-rap movement is Wiz Khalifa. This is a bonafide fact. His breakout 2010 mixtape Kush & Orange Juice is a love letter to marijuana, with songs like “The Statement” and “In the Cut” turning smoking weed into a ritual of coolness and chill vibes. Wiz didn’t stop there—he launched his own strain, Khalifa Kush, and partnered with cannabis companies, turning his brand into a multimillion-dollar business. He is a pioneer in the intersection between rap and cannabis. Period.

Screen Shot 2024 12 03 at 3.46.50 PM

Now get this, similarly Curren$y has built an entire career on merging his laid-back sound with weed culture. Albums like Pilot Talk and songs like “Address” reference cannabis not just as a habit but as a lifestyle, inspiring fans to see marijuana as more than just a substance.

More recently, star artists like Travis Scott have seamlessly incorporated cannabis into their artistry. His chart-topping 2018 album Astroworld includes subtle nods to weed culture, presenting it as a part of the psychedelic, boundary-pushing world he creates through his music. More experimental in tone but still in the picture when it came to the trees. Of course Travis Scott is an entrepreneur so it was only right he launched his own cannabis brand, Cactus Farms which speaks to his “Cactus” merch theme.

Screen Shot 2024 12 03 at 3.50.47 PM

Even icons like Jay-Z have gotten involved in the cannabis economy. In 2019, he joined California-based cannabis company Caliva as its Chief Brand Strategist, showing how hip hop’s influence extends beyond music into entrepreneurship.

Furthering Cannabis Within Hip Hop’s Economy

What’s really undeniable is the role hip hop played to help drive cannabis legalization efforts paving the way for artists to cash in on the booming weed economy.

Most prominently, brands like Cookies, founded by rapper Berner, are worth millions and have created a direct link between rap music and cannabis consumption.

Screen Shot 2024 12 03 at 3.47.27 PM

Even Drake, known for his wide range of lyrical content rather than advocating cannabis use, has dabbled in the marijuana business. In 2019, he launched More Life Growth Co., proving that weed is no longer just a recreational plant but a serious business opportunity for hip hop’s elite to commercialize.

What’s Next for Weed in Hip Hop?

Cannabis legalization efforts are continuing to spread across the U.S. and beyond, and hip hop’s mainstay in shaping the perception of marijuana can’t be overstated.

What was once considered taboo has now become a cultural norm, thanks in part to the influence of rap artists and how some portray the plant in everyday lifestyles.

Including weed within chart-topping hits to promoting it as a core business venture, hip hop has made cannabis not just acceptable but aspirational. And that’s key as there needs to be more people who look like most rap artists leading the charge in the cannabis industry.

Thanks to artists like Wiz Khalifa, Snoop Dogg, Method Man, Redman and others, they have not only shifted the narrative around cannabis but have also positioned themselves to impact an agricultural industry that’s projected to reach $100 billion globally by 2030.

$100 billion. That part.

Screen Shot 2024 12 03 at 3.48.44 PM

When it comes to the average hip hop fan, this isn’t just about blazing up—it’s about understanding how rap culture has played an instrumental role in shaping a worldwide phenomenon.

Weed isn’t just cool or accepted because it’s weed. Cannabis is cool because hip hop culture made it that way.

Nick Cannon Opens Up About Narcissistic Personality Disorder Diagnosis

Screen Shot 2024 12 02 at 11.52.42 AM

Mental health Monday is a real thing. And one of our most celebrated and influential stars just opened up more about his mental health journey. Nick Cannon has been diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). That’s a big deal.

The deep dive came out during a candid chat with PEOPLE, where the multi-talented entertainer shared his experiences leading up to the diagnosis and how he’s embracing healing.

“I still don’t understand it all the way, but I kind of always wanted to get tested for it. I did a bunch of tests,” he shared with the outlet. “I’ve been diagnosed with ADHD. Even as a kid it was dyslexia, but just knowing that I’m just a neurodivergent individual, I kind of always knew.”

Just think about the courage that took to discuss in such a public manner.

Get this, Nick also expressed how the diagnosis has changed his perspective on things … “I feel like there’s so many labels out there, but it’s like, to be able to embrace it and say, ‘Look, I’m healing. I need help. Show me.’ I just embrace mental health and therapy in such a strong way,” he says, continuing, “To be able to say I’m an example for others, but also be healing during the self-process works, too.”

If you want to know more about NPD, according to the Mayo Clinic, narcissistic personality disorder is a mental health condition where individuals may have an inflated sense of self-importance, crave excessive admiration, and struggle to empathize with others. Treatment typically involves talk therapy, also known as psychotherapy.

Do you know anyone who fits this bill? We all do. That person may very well be suffering from NPD.

What’s more, Nick first revealed his diagnosis during his Counsel Culture series last month. Reflecting on the condition, the Masked Singer host said, “When I did get diagnosed with it, because I have no problem with it–it’s a spectrum,” explained Cannon. “I think even it starts off with confidence, overconfidence, arrogance… And then that’s when you step into the space of narcissism and in that there’s markers. And when someone has extreme narcissistic behavior disorder, it has things like the lack of empathy, rage, all of those things, I don’t have those.”

That part.

As a father of 12, Nick is committed to growth and self-reflection, showing his fans that even public figures are on their own journeys to better mental health.

If anything, getting help for the kids matter the most. Good luck, Nick and thank you for sharing your journey.

LeBron James Responds To Rumors That He Spends $1.5 Million A Year On His Body

LeBron James, like many other legendary athletes, puts a lot of hard work and cash into maintaining his desired and necessary physical state and well-being. However, rumors persist about just how much money he spends on a “biohacking” health routine, especially given his longevity in the NBA. The Nike collaborator still pulls off impressive feats that keep him in conversation as a stellar player, but people’s skepticism is sometimes too spicy to deny. As such, the 39-year-old was recently asked about this during his appearance in the Netflix series Starting 5, and he had a pretty simple response to a question about the speculation that he blows a $1.5 million bag a year on this routine.

“I kind of just chuckle,” LeBron James remarked about these rumors. “That is a number that I will not disclose, but, more importantly, I think it’s just the time.” Writer Bill Simmons was among the first to speculate about this alleged $1.5 million back in 2016 concerning his health routine. Bronny James’ father’s regimen reportedly includes daily cryotherapy, red light therapy, hyperbaric chamber time, a nap at around mid-day, and low sugars and high carbs for his diet.

LeBron James Responds To “Biohacking” Spending Claims

Elsewhere, when it comes to the hip-hop world, LeBron James is in a very interesting position these days when it comes to the GOAT conversation. That’s because he seemed to pick a side between two contenders to the rap crown that he’s praised many times before. Well, at least that’s what Drake thinks, as the basketball superstar went to Kendrick Lamar’s Juneteenth concert following their explosive battle. Is this all just the result of social media speculation? Maybe. But the 6ix God did pettily unfollow LeBron, so they’re either toying with fan perceptions or they really had a rift. Who knows? Or rather, who cares?

Jokes aside, this isn’t the only recent debate that surged around LeBron James’ name. Fans issued split responses to his celebration of Big Meech’s release from prison, with some understanding the respect and others painting it as an endorsement of criminal behavior. It’s part of the difficult weapon of responsibility and public support that celebrities as big as Bron have to contend with… And another is people pocket-watching your health.

DKMS, the most significant non-profit organization in the world to fight blood cancer, welcomed supporters to its 18th annual gala on October 17th at New York’s Cipriani Wall Street. The black-tie event raised $4.7 million in essential funding for DKMS’s global lifesaving work. The evening’s honoree was pioneering fashion designer Vera Wang, recognized for her many years of dedicated support for DKMS and her exceptional contributions to the organization’s mission.

The gala featured a performance by Grammy Award- and Golden Globe award-winning singer and actress Andra Day (The United States vs Billie Holiday, “Rise Up), with an auction hosted by comedian and actor Mario Cantone (Sex and the City, The View, The Masked Singer).

Notable guests included fashion designer Marc Jacobs, supermodels Niki Taylor and Coco Rocha, MSNBC President Rashida Jones, broadcaster, entrepreneur, and global ambassador for Rimmel London Maya Jama, iHeartMedia CEO Bob Pittman, and hairstylist/entrepreneur Frederic Fekkai. Inspiring on-stage remarks were delivered by Katharina Harf, DKMS Global Chairman, and Peter Harf, DKMS Founder.

Gala guests experienced a moving, on-stage moment of gratitude when Brooklyn St. John, an 11-year-old blood disease survivor from Kansas, was introduced to her lifesaving stem cell donor, Justin Bradshaw. Brooklynn and her family’s lives were upended by a sudden diagnosis of severe aplastic anemia that nearly took her life. Last night, Brooklynn and her mother finally had the opportunity to thank her genetic twin, a firefighter paramedic, and father of two from Texas, in person with a hug.

Honoree Vera Wang shares, “I am deeply honored to receive this recognition from DKMS, an organization whose lifesaving mission has always inspired me. The courage and resilience of patients and donors alike are a reminder of the immense power we hold when we come together to fight blood cancer. It is a privilege to support DKMS’s incredible work, and I hope that through continued efforts, we can give even more people a second chance at life.”

Joe says that along with his new dietary habits, taking Ozempic has help him lose upward of 200 lbs. in the past two decades.

“We just try to eat everything with the least carbs as possible,” Joe told Us Weekly. “So we try to stay away from the bread, the pasta, the rice. That’s the smartest way to eat.” He added that carbs are still necessary so it’s all about balance. “Like this morning I ate breakfast, I had this toast. I cut the corner off, ate it, and kept it moving,” he added. “Normally I would’ve ate [sic] the whole thing. But you know, that’s what we do. We cut carbs and try to be smarter.”

Fat Joe Teams Up with “Power to the Patients” for Urgent PSA on Healthcare Price Transparency

Press Photo2

Today, Grammy-nominated artist Fat Joe, along with American workers, union members, employers, and patient advocates, launched a Public Service Announcement (PSA) with “Power to the Patients,” calling on political leaders to prioritize healthcare price transparency. The PSA, aimed at “every elected official and politician in America,” urges immediate action to create a more affordable and equitable healthcare system.

The message is urgent: over 100 million Americans are currently burdened with medical debt, the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the U.S. The lack of transparency in hospital and insurer pricing allows for massive variations in healthcare costs, often without patient knowledge. For example, recent reports revealed that the cost of the same medical service can differ drastically, with an MRI costing between $300 and $3,000, or a knee replacement ranging from $19,000 to $168,000, depending on the hospital or insurance plan.

“To every elected official and politician in America… the people stand united, desperate for you to listen,” said Fat Joe. “If you’re not advocating for prices and transparency in healthcare… you are compromising every single American across this country. Because when we can’t see prices, hospitals, insurers, and their middlemen charge us whatever they want. Our very own healthcare system is robbing all of us. We just need the prices. That’s how our economy works! If you wanna do right by workers, and employers, and unions… then you’ve gotta to do right by the people they represent and the families who depend upon them. And we gotta hear it. Prices now!”

The call for price transparency isn’t just about cost—it’s about improving quality and accountability. When patients know the prices in advance, they can choose better care at lower costs, and hospitals and insurers are forced to be more competitive and accountable. More than 90% of Americans support healthcare price transparency, but only 34.5% of hospitals comply with current rules requiring upfront price disclosures.

The PSA is part of an ongoing advocacy campaign by “Power to the Patients” to drive legislative action. A bipartisan group of senators recently introduced legislation (S.3548) to strengthen and expand price transparency requirements.

Founded in 2021, “Power to the Patients” is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making healthcare more affordable and equitable by advocating for price transparency and accountability in the healthcare system.

Fat Joe’s PSA aims to give a voice to millions of Americans demanding change, urging lawmakers to enforce these vital transparency measures.
