The Food Of Coachella — In Photos — As Weekend Two Gets Kicking

Food-lovers heading to weekend two of the Coachella Valley Art and Music Festival this weekend are about to bask in a smorgasbord of flavors from the country’s most famed restaurants, caterers, and chefs. In some ways, the event — which has long been a food haven — set a new bar this year, with more international flavors, more than double the vegan options, and more glam dining than festival-goers have ever seen.

Lobster rolls, fresh-caught sushi, tender steaks, and Korean BBQ are just a few of the culinary delights being served to festival-goers this year. From full family-style dining with multi-course meals to extravagant oyster dinners with fresh caviar, a little extra cash at Coachella can take a casual meal to a whole new level. Even the potato chip brand, Lay’s, got in on the action in a “4D” flavor experience with hip-hop beats made from the recorded crunch of potato chips.

If you’re headed to Coachella for weekend two (or willing to live with some serious FOMO), feast your eyes on a whole lot of feasting, below!

Where To Find Coachella’s ‘Secret’ Tropicale Oasis Speakeasy

When Jeff Bell and Nic Adler came up with their initial concept for a tropical speakeasy at Coachella, they knew it would be fun. They probably never expected it to become one of the most talked-about attractions at the festival for four years running.

Bell and Adler first combined superpowers at Panorama Festival in New York, where they’d created a speakeasy bar much like the East Village’s legendary hole-in-the-wall, PDT Tropicale, which Bell runs in New York City. As Goldenvoice’s director of food and beverage, Adler enhanced the experience by bringing in props, décor, and more visual elements. Most of all, he ensured the place would provide a reprieve from the famously intense Coachella sun. As word got out about the atmosphere and their signature chilled cocktails, the buzz surrounding the pop-up kept spreading.

“We didn’t want to make it exclusive, to where people could read about it but not be able to get in. We wanted it to be something where everybody could go,” Bell explains.

Yet the key to a true “speakeasy” and the oasis’ charm, according to Bell, was keeping it a secret. Or, at least, not advertising it. As a result, no information was published about it on the Coachella website, email newsletter, or in the guide. In other words, the only way to know about it was through word of mouth.

“What’ll happen every year of the festival is, the first Friday is kind of slow, which is fine for us,” Says Bell. “By day two, people start finding it. Then the Goldenvoice executives come by, and some of the super VIPs and artists they know find out about it so they’ll come by. Then those people tell people and those people tell people. By day three, it’s crazy. The second weekend is bonkers.”

Those who’ve found the tropical speakeasy in the past will be surprised to find it in a new location this year. It’s still hidden in plain sight, but this year it’ll be placed near the Palapa check-in, sandwiched between the Mojave and Gobi stages. Those who visit it early will beat the crowds that will inevitably form later in the weekend.

They’ll also be the first to try drinks like the Tropitonic, a daytime refresher with guava, tonic and citrus. For those who want to drink but not get drunk, Life’s a Garden is a swanky non-alcoholic drink akin to a gin and tonic. For an afternoon kick, there’s the Peptalk, which is like a savory Paloma but with red bell peppers. This year, Bell is also unveiling a drink called The Greenlight, packing Absolut Vodka, fresh pressed grapes, apple juice, and mint. And that’s just a few of the drinks on the menu.

“We make great drinks, but it’s the whole experience that puts the excitement on peoples faces when they walk in,” says Bell. “It’s just like PDT in New York: we want to be one of the things people talk about when they leave. If we can be something that people remember, like when people come to Coachella to see Billie Eilish, or some big mega star, we want them to be able to say the music was great and this food thing was great – oh yeah, and we found this secret bar!”

Sensational Foods You Can Only Eat At Coachella

Over the next two weekends, glitter-bedecked scenesters from all over the world will flock to the Southern California desert for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Just like the music, the art, and many of the experiences between stages, the food is curated with the same keen eye for top-caliber talent and unforgettable productions.

With three days each weekend and three meals each day, that leaves (*back of the envelope calculation*)… nine meals to make the most of the experience. 18 if you’re going for both weekends. The problem? There are more than 50 food purveyors, making figuring out what to eat as challenging as deciding between two of your favorite musicians performing at the same time.

Fortunately, many of these culinary delights can be found in restaurants outside the festival. But what about those ephemeral options that can only be enjoyed during the event? These are true once-in-a-lifetime tastes. We can’t live your life for you, but we can do our best to break down eight Coachella food offerings that you won’t want to miss.

That ninth one? That’s your freebie. Roll the dice on something and report back to us.

Sushi by Scratch
Easily the most talked about food offering this year is Chef Phillip Frankland Lee’s 17-course sushi meal served in an Omakase speakeasy, hidden behind an unmarked door. Planned as a new spin on the traditional sushi counter experience, there are a mere 12 seats for each serving, to enhance the intimacy of the experience. Dinner will set you back $375 plus fees, but the memory of this meal will probably live on in your dreams forever.

Outstanding In The Field
For a laid-back, family-style four-course meal along a 275-person long table, head to Outstanding in the Field. Here, 11 of the top chefs in the world will converge for a different dining experience each evening. Chefs Ayinde and Makini Howell, will host a fully plant-based meal. Chef Burt Bakman (SLAB) and Chef Eric Greenspan will be hosting a Passover Seder. Each dinner celebrates local farmers, and the backdrop of Coachella’s VIP Rose Garden will make the occasion that much more special. Rates are $295 plus fees.

Lay’s Fresh 4D
Lay’s, the potato chip company, is joining the party too. This year they’re unveiling a mysterious, reservation-only “Fresh 4D” tasting, which promises 100% sustainably-sourced potatoes from farm to face in under 24-hours. Under a structure they’ve described as “Potadomes” in a press release, it’ll be a multi-sensory snacking experience complete with “three elevated bites that are an ode to the familiar Lay’s flavors consumers know and love.”

Broad Street Oyster Co
If lobster rolls are your religion, the Broad Street Oyster Co pop-up at Coachella is going to be church. This year guests of this reservation-only experience can look forward to burgers, shellfish, anchovy toast, shrimp galore, lobster, and a heavenly round of everyone’s favorite sea-born aphrodisiac, the eponymous oyster. The multi-course meal otherwise top caliber seafood experience.

KazuNori
Thanks to a world-class team up between The Sushi Nozawa Group and California’s renowned sushi restaurant Razorfish, sushi is affordable and accessible again at Coachella. Try it at the Rose Garden with your VIP wristband. Their signature “hand rolled bar” combines convenience and decadence with a fancy-made-casual flair. Plus, you can eat it with your hands!

Umami Burger with Alvin Cailan
Californian’s know Umami, but there’s almost nowhere else to get a chance to be served by the dynamic and beloved Alvin Cailan. Known for his exceptional Filipino food, Cailan has served the likes of Seth Rogen and Padma Lakshmi. He’s also celebrated for founding the now hailed breakfast spot, EggSlut in Los Angeles. Now that he’s teamed up with Umami, leaving it off your must-do list would be a faux pas for any self-respecting foodie.

Salt & Straw
Surprisingly owned in part by pro wrestler and actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Salt & Straw is famous for their “curiously delicious” ice cream shops. This year, Wunderground Coffee teamed up with Salt & Straw to take the science of ice cream even further. They’re slated to serve a totally different adaptogenic ice cream flavor for each day of the festival! Miss a day and you may never have the chance to try that flavor again.

Love Hour
In a rare partnership with six artists from the music lineup, popular Smash Burger icon Love Hour will be serving up collaborative (and secret) items. Artists like Louis the Child, Carly Rae Jepson, Eyedress, Omar Apollo, and more all weighed in to make these unique flavors sing. Each artists’ burger is available for one day only though, so get ‘em while you can.

A Quick Look At All Of The Food Vendors At Coachella This Year

In the insanity of a music lineup stacked with heavyweights, larger-than-life art sculptures, and breathtaking moments, it’s easy to overlook one of the most memorable parts of Coachella – the food!

A simple stroll through the Indio Central Market, Coachella’s main food court, is like falling into an international vortex of savory and sweet fragrances. From top-end juicy burgers to southern-style hot chicken sammies, these culinary delights are right on par with the headliners. Choosing what to eat is no less challenging than deciding which act to hear next. With 26 vegan options, five different pizza vendors, and stylized food from cultures far and wide, it’s a great time to try something new, too.

Just like following your ears will lead to your own personal listening adventure and a universe of new musical discoveries at Coachella, following your other senses is sure to bring similar joy. The difference is most of these handpicked morsels aren’t available to stream later. In fact, outside Coachella, it’s safe to say finding a spread like this all at once is near impossible.

So, what’s new on the menu?

Hot this year, Coachella has five incredible dining options when it comes to cuisine:

  • First and most intriguing for sushi-lovers, there’s Sushi by Scratch ($375 + fees), a hidden Omakase speakeasy with a 17-course sushi meal. It’s even got a secret door!
  • Second, the event annually hosts a full-fledged restaurant experience inside the festival grounds. This year Coachella offers a romantic pop-up with oysters courtesy of Los Angeles’ famed seafood specialists, Broad Street Oyster Co.
  • Third, a cavalcade of top-shelf chefs will assemble in the Polo Fields mythic rose gardens for a 275-person banquet-style meal on long tables. Known as Outstanding In The Field ($275 + fees), the world-class chef lineup is complimented by food from local farms, accompanied by some of the best cocktails, beer, and wine the festival has to offer.
  • Fourth, Lay’s (yes, the potato chip company) is unveiling a mysterious activation they’re calling “Fresh 4D”, which promises to be a totally multi-sensory snacking experience.
  • The last and most robust eating option, which is already accessible with a GA or VIP wristband, can be found in more than 50 food trucks, restaurants, and caterers who converge from around the country for the event. In the Beer Gardens, the campgrounds, the Terrace, 12 Peaks VIP, Rose Garden VIP, and in Coachella’s Indio Central Market, you’ll find these culinary maestros serving all their own specialties in signature flair.

We Tried Megan Thee Stallion’s Goldbelly H-Town Hottie Pie — Here’s The Verdict

In celebration of her infectiously danceable new single with Dua Lipa, “Sweetest Pie” Megan Thee Stallion has linked up with Goldbelly for a special pie collaboration that attempts to capture the spirit of the song. Megan’s H-Town Hottie Pie is inspired by the rapper’s hometown of Houston and goes big on the sweets — featuring a pecan pie loaded up with a combination of shredded coconut, pretzels, butterscotch chips, and gooey brown sugar with a golden glaze over the top.

According to the branding, it promises to taste like your “favorite bakery took a trip down the candy aisle” and it’s very much that. Literally, we’re talking about the “sweetest pie” your money can buy.

Sidenote: We’re eternally thankful Megan take the line “Wanna put his Nutty Buddy in my Fudge Round” too literally with this dessert. Sexual innuendo completely aside, Nutty Buddys and Fudge Rounds are some pretty bottom-tier snacks, so if this was a giant Nutty Fudge Round pie we would’ve had to pass. I’m sorry to the Little Debbie fans out there, you all have bad taste.

Anyway, the H-Town Hottie Pie is currently available for a limited time on Goldbelly for a price of $59. Before you drop that kind of cash on a gold spray-painted pecan pie, you’re probably going to want to know if it’s any good — so let’s eat!

Megan’s H-Town Hottie Pie

Sweetest Pie Review
Dane Rivera

Price: $59

Experience & Tasting Notes:

Before we dive into the pie we have to talk about the packaging and presentation, because this is a Gold Belly product, after all. The pie ships frozen in a small box with bubble wrap and is stable at room temperature for a full week, or a full month if you re-freeze it. By the time I received and opened up the pie, it was fully thawed and ready to eat.

That’s great if you live in an apartment with an indoor mailing room like I do, but if you’re getting this delivered to your doorstep and live in a warmer climate, I could see heat damaging the consistency of your pie, which is made of mostly gooey sugar, not exactly the biggest resistor to melt-age.

Sweetest Pie Review
Dane Rivera

The pie itself is housed in a special promotional box featuring Megan holding a sprinkled donut with her hair made-up to look like whipped cream. The photo matches some of Megan’s recent promotional material, namely her Apple Music profile photo, but I think it’s an odd choice to decorate this pecan pie with so much whipped cream donut imagery when none of that has to do with the pie.

But hey, we’re not here to talk about the conceptual consistency, we’re here to talk about the pie.

Sweetest Pie Review
Dane Rivera

The pie itself looks like — and I say this with all due respect to both Ms. Stallion and Goldbelly — what I imagine C-3P0’s shit would look like if he was a robot capable of using the bathroom. Spray-painted food is a trend that no one asked for and people keep giving us. Stop. I think I speak for everyone when I say that eating spray-painted food, no matter how much you say ‘its edible!’ will always feel wrong.

When it comes to cutting into this pie we’re going to suggest you use a hammer and chisel because it’s incredibly hard to get a knife through this thing. So unless you’re totally fine with eating an ugly, uneven slice, don’t approach this pie as you would any other pie.

Sweetest Pie Review
Dane Rivera

The brown sugar/corn syrup substance that sticks all this candied snack food together does a good job of binding the ingredients together, but it makes it hard to get through easily. It’s messy, is the point — most pecan pies are.

Once I finally bit into the pie though, all my criticisms melted away into a pool of sweet ecstasy. This pie is tooth-achingly sweet, brown sugar dominates the flavor with sweet and moist shredded coconut flavor on the aftertaste, mingling with subtly salty notes. While it relies on salted pretzels to act as a counterbalance to the sweetness, it leans much more comfortably on the sweet side of the flavor spectrum.

It’s a pleasure to eat bite after bite, but if you really want to kick it up a notch you’ll throw it in the microwave. A few seconds of heat took the already pleasant experience of eating this pie to the next level. Instead of receiving the flavors in sweet and salty waves, they melded together into a more harmonious whole. The warmed-up pie had a great texture and mouthfeel, courtesy of the combination of sugar, nuts, and shredded coconut, and an even better flavor that tasted like pecan pie reimagined by munchie-seeking stoners.

I still wish it wasn’t spray-painted fucking gold though.

The Bottom Line:

Sweet, salty, nutty, and then sweet again. Once warmed up and topped with your favorite ice cream, you’re in for one of the sweetest pies you’re bound to eat all year. And a pretty damn delicious one.

Of Course, Jack Harlow Is Getting A ‘Jack’s Favorites’ KFC Menu

Hip-hop’s newest lovable scamp Jack Harlow is blowing up right now. Not only is his new single “Nail Tech” going strong on playlists and radio but he’s also hanging out with his musical hero Drake, receiving high praise from Kanye West, playing in the NBA’s All-Star Celebrity Game (and balling out, too), and he’s been cast in an upcoming remake of the classic basketball comedy White Men Can’t Jump. So, of course, it only makes sense for him to make a business move many of his rap peers have been making lately and partner with a fast-food chain for his own menu.

That’s exactly what he’s done, and with McDonald’s, Popeye’s, Taco Bell, and Arby’s(!?) all taken, what better chain for the Louisville native to partner with than his home state’s own KFC? Today, Jack and KFC announced the new “Jack’s Favorite’s” menu, featuring “the menu items I’ve been enjoying since I was a child,” according to Jack himself in the press release. “Partnering up with KFC feels like poetic justice,” he said. “I’ve begun traveling the world and no matter how far I go, KFC is one of the first things people want to bring up when they find out where I’m from.”

Unfortunately, the Jack’s Favorites menu basically just collects a few existing items like the 4-piece tender combo, mac & cheese, and biscuit, with no wacky new additions. Saweetie’s McDonald’s menu encouraged fans to remix their faves (causing a similar campaign to be associated with her unofficially by fans); Megan got Hottie Sauce on hers! This is pretty bland for such a hot rising star. Sorry, Jack, we love you, but this ain’t it. Hopefully, there will be some flashy new menu items — or at least some cool merch — to go along with this move, as Jack’s partnership is scheduled to last the year and includes “campaigns, social media activations, special menu item launches, and exclusive experiences” with the rapper. (Chicken) fingers crossed.

You can check out the Jack’s Favorite menu here.

Pusha T’s ‘Spicy Fish Diss’ Was Reportedly Worth Over $8 Million Of Advertising For Arby’s

When Pusha T shared his Arby’s-championing new song “Spicy Fish Diss” earlier this week, needless to say, some fans were thrown for a loop by the admittedly silly corporate partnership. Not only was the coke rap connoisseur rhyming sincere, wordplay-laced bars about a fast-food sandwich but he was also throwing jabs at another fast-food giant, McDonald’s, after claiming responsibility for its inescapable commercial jingle. But it looks like the Virginia rapper is getting the last laugh after all after a new report claims his track was worth more than $8 million in advertising exposure for Arby’s.

Upon catching wind of the impressive statistic, Pusha gave a characteristic boastful response, quoting himself to celebrate the achievement. “Critics he’s out of his mind/Haters he’s outta his prime” he wrote. “…yet, always where the money’s at like lottery signs.”

Part of the reason it seems Pusha has held a grudge against McDonald’s all this time is that he resents not negotiating for songwriting credits on the chain’s “I’m Lovin’ It” ads, telling Rolling Stone, “I did it at a very young age at a very young time in my career where I wasn’t asking for as much money and ownership. It’s something that’s always dug at me later in life like, ‘Dammit, I was a part of this and I should have more stake.’”

Weirdly enough, this isn’t even the first time McDonald’s has been directly dissed by a competitor in the medium of rap. In 2018, Wendy’s released a mixtape titled We Beefin? based on months of Twitter jabs that also took aim at Burger King and Dairy Queen.
