Pusha T Still Cashes In Royalties For The Arby’s Commercial Theme Song

Pusha T’s skills as a rapper are well-documented over a 20-year career. You could talk about his solo albums, the Clipse discography with his brother Malice (now known as No Malice), his diss tracks, his features- but don’t forget his fast food contributions. Moreover, former G.O.O.D. Music executive Steven Victor explained during a recent interview how King Push still gets royalties for the song that sandwich chain Arby’s uses in all its commercials- a track with him and Yogi. Furthermore, as someone who’s worked a lot with the Virginia native, Victor labeled it as one of his best business moves.

“I think convincing Pusha to rap on Yogi’s beat, and it ended up being the theme song for Arby’s,” he stated with a smile when asked about what creative decisions he’s proudest of. “If you watch an Arby’s commercial, at the end of it, it goes, ‘Arby’s- we have the meats!’ That’s the song! They don’t even use Pusha’s part. But they have to pay him, because he owns 50 percent of the song. So, every time they want to sync the song, they have to come to us for approval.”

Steven Victor Explains Pusha T’s Arby’s Royalties

At the time of writing this article, the track “Burial” by Yogi and Pusha T soundtracks Arby’s commercials- and has done so for seven years. While it’s unclear exactly how much the 46-year-old has made as a result, we can imagine it’s quite a lot. What’s more is that he also worked with Arby’s to write and record a diss track against McDonald’s’ Filet-O-Fish. The “Spicy Fish Diss Track” sees the MC go way harder than he ever needed to for it to be good.

In fact, for those unaware, the “Diet Coke” artist has quite the history with McDonald’s, involving yet another jingle. He and his brother wrote the iconic “I’m Lovin’ It” tag in 2003 and got paid a one-time fee with no royalties. Considering that Justin Timberlake received $6 million to record it, they felt cheated out, and thus, Push waged war in the fast-food realm. Talk about a hunger for revenge. Pusha T Keeps The Fast Food Beef Between McDonald’s And Arby’s Going With ‘Rib Roast’

Pusha T is at it again. After penning the “Spicy Fish Diss” for Arby’s dissing McDonald’s’ Filet-O-Fish sandwich, the Virginia rapper once again takes aim at the fast food giant with “Rib Roast,” a Western-themed takedown of the Golden Arches’ beloved McRib. “McDonald’s, what you selling, mystery meat?” Push sneers. “Pop up and go away, what does history teach?” Somehow or another, he manages to make it through the whole thing without sneaking in a bar about cocaine… Growth?

For what it’s worth, Arby’s signing Pusha to be its official attack dog has proven to be pretty lucrative for Arby’s. According to an Apex Marketing estimate in March, the jingle/diss track was worth more than $8 million in advertising for Arby’s, whose previous tagline, “We have the meats,” has become pretty ubiquitous if not particularly enticing. It’s also proven a worthwhile endeavor for Pusha, who allegedly penned the “I’m Lovin’ It” jingle for McDonald’s for a flat fee and never got a royalty check. Considering he’s been after Lil Wayne for over a decade over who wore a hoodie first (and subsequently expanded that feud to include Wayne’s protege Drake), this whole fast food beef (heh) offers him the perfect excuse to exercise his petty and get paid for it.

Pusha T’s ‘Spicy Fish Diss’ Was Reportedly Worth Over $8 Million Of Advertising For Arby’s

When Pusha T shared his Arby’s-championing new song “Spicy Fish Diss” earlier this week, needless to say, some fans were thrown for a loop by the admittedly silly corporate partnership. Not only was the coke rap connoisseur rhyming sincere, wordplay-laced bars about a fast-food sandwich but he was also throwing jabs at another fast-food giant, McDonald’s, after claiming responsibility for its inescapable commercial jingle. But it looks like the Virginia rapper is getting the last laugh after all after a new report claims his track was worth more than $8 million in advertising exposure for Arby’s.

Upon catching wind of the impressive statistic, Pusha gave a characteristic boastful response, quoting himself to celebrate the achievement. “Critics he’s out of his mind/Haters he’s outta his prime” he wrote. “…yet, always where the money’s at like lottery signs.”

Part of the reason it seems Pusha has held a grudge against McDonald’s all this time is that he resents not negotiating for songwriting credits on the chain’s “I’m Lovin’ It” ads, telling Rolling Stone, “I did it at a very young age at a very young time in my career where I wasn’t asking for as much money and ownership. It’s something that’s always dug at me later in life like, ‘Dammit, I was a part of this and I should have more stake.’”

Weirdly enough, this isn’t even the first time McDonald’s has been directly dissed by a competitor in the medium of rap. In 2018, Wendy’s released a mixtape titled We Beefin? based on months of Twitter jabs that also took aim at Burger King and Dairy Queen.

Pusha T’s New Arby’s Jingle Ruthlessly Disses McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish

Pusha T is no stranger to to the fast food jingle scene. News surfaced in 2016 that he was behind McDonald’s ubiquitous “I’m Lovin’ It!” song which first appeared in 2003. Now, nearly two decades later, King Push — who recently dropped the track “Diet Coke” with Kanye West — has come over to the dark side, so to speak, and has just penned the new “Spicy Diss Fish Track” for Arby’s.

The track touts the superiority of Arby’s Spicy Fish sandwich to that of McDonald’s time-honored Filet-O-Fish as Pusha T ruthlessly dismantles the Mickey D’s sandwich, which first debuted in 1962. “I’m the reason the whole world love it, now I gotta crush it. Filet-O-Fish is sh*t and you should be disgusted,” he raps in the song’s opening bars. He spends much of the track ripping apart the square shaped McDonald’s sandwich and bodies Ronald McDonald in the process. “A little cube of fish from a clown is basic,” he adds, punctuating a verse.

The rapper took to twitter to announce his new…er…collab, saying, “Just dropped a diss track with @Arbys. Grab some popcorn and a Spicy Fish Sandwich. #ArbysSpicyFishDissTrack #ArbysPaidMeButIWouldSayThisAnyway”

On the track, which rides a battle rap beat not too far removed from something out of El-P’s early production library, Push somehow manages to get his sly cocaine rap references past the censors. As the track comes to a close and a ship sinks into the water in the video (symbolizing the demise of the now 60 year old McDonald’s sandwich), Push gets back to his roots and delivers the coke rap death punch, “If you know me and you know me well, our fish is gonna tip that scale!”
