Dr. Dre And Snoop Dogg Launched A New Canned Beverage Fittingly Based On ‘Gin And Juice’

Late last year, Snoop Dogg launched a line of hemp-infused beverages taking advantage of his reputation as a world-class cannabis ambassador and the coincidental timing of his “giving up smoke” ad to give the world Death Row Records’ Doggy Spritz and other associated drinks.

Now, he teamed up with Dr. Dre to deliver another commercial take on the West Coast duo’s long and storied careers: a canned ready-to-drink cocktail inspired by their 1994 hit “Gin And Juice.” The alcoholic beverage will be available in four flavors — Apricot, Citrus, Melon, and Passionfruit — and begin rolling out in the US from now through early spring. The dynamic duo announced the new product with a Quentin Tarantino-inspired short film on social media in which they apparently play the roles of Jules and Vincent-esque hitmen burying a recent victim in the woods while wearing suits and enjoying their new drinks (and Snoop’s favorite vegetable).

In a press release about the new product, Snoop said, “Look at our age and look at what we’ve done, and we still love each other, so why not do something together? A lot of times people have been in a relationship for thirty years and can’t talk to each other, can’t hang out, so it’s just fun to be in a partnership with people that you actually love.” Dre echoed the sentiment, saying, “Together, we always try to create magic, we’re having fun being creative, and everything about this product is really us. There’s passion behind it, and friendship and love and a culture. We’re shooting to make everything we do magnificent, and fortunately, most of the time we hit the target.”

They’ll have another opportunity to do so with their long-awaited follow-up to Doggystyle, called Missionary, which they’re apparently close to releasing.

How To Make Taylor Swift’s Favorite Cocktail

Taylor Swift Cocktail
Getty Image/Merle Cooper

Taylor Swift has been enjoying a well-earned break over the winter/holiday months before the Eras Tour kicks off again in March. Swift has been cheering on her boyfriend at NFL games, attending holiday parties in Kansas City, and hanging with her whole crew on her birthday … almost always with a drink nearby. According to US Weekly, throughout it all, Swift has a new “favorite cocktail” and it’s a very niche and nuanced sipper — the French Blonde.

The French Blonde falls into the early aughts resurgence of cocktail culture — the key giveaway is the use of elderflower liqueur St. Germain. Beyond that, the drink is a shaker that’s part Red Head, part Greyhound, and 100% fresh thanks to vibrant grapefruit juice and dry gin. It’s also not to be confused with the Parisian Blonde which is more akin to a Brandy Alexander (so cream-based).

Since this is a new fav of Swift, I thought I’d break down how to make the tasty cocktail below. Admittedly, this is a kind of fussy cocktail. Some of the ingredients are a tad harder to find and a trip to a very good liquor store will be in order (I link to everything hard to find below for delivery too). Fussiness aside, this is a very tasty, light yet deep, and balanced cocktail that’s — thankfully — not overly sweet.

Let’s dive in!

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz. London dry gin
  • 2 oz. Lillet Blanc
  • 0.5 oz. St. Germain
  • 2 oz. fresh and strained grapefruit juice
  • 2 dashes of lemon bitters
  • Grapefruit peel
  • Ice

Bombay London Dry Gin is a great cocktail gin that’s both affordable and available pretty much everywhere. St. Germain (elderflower liqueur) should also be available at most decent liquor stores in large 750ml, 375ml, and small 200ml bottles. Since this is a pretty niche additive for cocktails, I’d recommend grabbing the smaller bottle so that it doesn’t just sit on your shelf for months (or years).

Or, if you’re a huge Swift fan, grab the big bottle and go all in.

Lillet Blanc is a French aperitif that’s in the same vein as fortified wines like vermouth (and it’s usually used in the same way in cocktails). In a pinch, you can use dry vermouth, but you won’t be getting the same subtle sweetness and hint of bitter quinine. Plus, a good liquor store should carry Lillet.

Lastly, there’s the lemon bitters. Only really good full-service liquor stores will carry this. So you might want to just order it online and save a trip to, like, all the liquor stores in your town searching for it.

What You’ll Need:

  • Coupe (prechilled)
  • Cocktail shaker
  • Cocktail strainer
  • Jigger
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Paring knife
  • Hand juicer

Zach Johnston

Method:

  • Add the gin, Lillet, St. Germain, grapefruit juice, and bitters to a cocktail shaker. Add a large handful of ice, affix the lid, and then shake vigorously until the cocktail shaker is ice-cold to touch.
  • Fetch the glass from the freezer and double strain (with the cocktail strainer and fine mesh strainer) into the cocktail glass.
  • Express the oils from the grapefruit peel over the glass and discard. Serve.

Bottom Line:

Taylor Swift Cocktail
Zach Johnston

This is bright and super refreshing, which is a great feel for January sipping. It’s a great change of pace from the heavy winter cocktails that dominate the colder months, and it kind of feels like a good low(ish) alcohol cocktail for a “damp” January.

The grapefruit and lemon bitters make this cocktail pop on the palate. It’s truly vibrant in every way. The gin is there with a fleeting sense of botanicals, but it is never overpowering — you barely get juniper at all.

The overall vibe is soft yet bright and well-balanced between bitter, botanical, herbal, and barley sweetened — the sweetness only comes through with the Lillet and grapefruit (which is one of the sweeter citruses). For my palate, I have to say — it’s a pretty nice sipper.

Hidden Track: Vodka Diet Coke

So this — vodka and Diet Coke — is classically considered Taylor Swift’s favorite cocktail. Watch the video above again. She clearly actually drinks this. Which… are celebrities keeping Diet Coke alive? Why not Coke Zero? I digress.

Anyway, this is a super easy highball that anyone can make in an instant.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. vodka
  • 4 oz. Diet Coke
  • Ice
  • Lemon wedge

These are easily sourceable ingredients from any store.

Taylor Swift Cocktail
Zach Johnston

What You’ll Need:

  • Highball glass
  • Jigger
  • Paring knife
  • Straw

Method:

  • Fill the highball glass with ice. Pour the vodka over the ice and top with Diet Coke.
  • Slice a wedge from a lemon and pop it on the glass with a straw. Serve.

Bottom Line:

Okay, bear with me. I like this a lot more than the French Blonde. There’s something that vodka does to amp up the Diet Coke that just works. It’s fresh and vibrant while feeling like a sneaky treat with a hint of alcohol lurking beneath it all. You get the loving feel of the Coke without that acrid Diet Coke taste, which feels kind of like a magic trick. I can see drinking these all the time as end-of-day relaxation highballs, weekend brunch sippers, or just in general — which is saying a lot as I famously hate Diet Coke.

Nice one, Swift.

Chris Stapleton Just Dropped A New Whiskey — Here’s Our Full Review

Traveller Buffalo Trace Whiskey
Sazerac Company/UPROXX

Chris Stapleton has become a country music icon over the last decade. He’s also carved out a deep following in the whiskey community as well. Over the last couple of years, Stapleton has partnered with Buffalo Trace Distillery to release single-barrel picks of E.H. Taylor, Jr. Bourbon that have raised tons of cash for charities. They’ve also been excellent whiskeys. This week, Buffalo Trace and Stapleton took their partnership to the next level and (finally) released a new whiskey brand — Traveller Whiskey.

There’s a lot to get into here. First, almost anything new from Buffalo Trace — which also makes iconic labels like Pappy Van Winkle, Weller, Eagle Rare, Blanton’s, and so many more — creates rabid excitement amongst whiskey fans. Second, Stapleton has the perfect level of cool that appeals to everyday music lovers and whiskey drinkers. So this collaboration leaned into exactly that with an American Blended Whiskey at a great price point.

Long story short, Buffalo Trace Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley and Stapleton tasted through 50 different blends before landing on the perfect one for Traveller Whiskey. The best part, this bottle only costs $39. And so far, that price is holding at retail. That’s kind of exciting from a distillery that historically drops whiskey that can cost hundreds of times more than their suggested retail.

So what’s in the bottle exactly? Let’s dive in and answer that!

Traveller Whiskey Blend No. 40 Blended Whiskey

Traveller Whiskey Blend No. 40 Blended Whiskey
Sazerac Company

ABV: 45%

Average Price: $39

The Whiskey:

This new whiskey from Buffalo Trace is the summation of years of collaboration between Country icon Chris Stapleton and Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley. After testing 50 different blends, this is the one that landed. The whiskey in the bottle is a special blend of Buffalo Trace rye and bourbons that hit just the right note for Stapleton’s whiskey palate.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: The nose leans into rich Buffalo Trace bourbon with a deep vanilla buttercream over soft spiced brandied cherries just kissed with dark chocolate and old oak staves with a whisper of salted caramel.

Palate: That caramel has a hint of sweet corn to it on the palate before the vanilla rushes back in with a creamy lusciousness and layers of winter spices, orchard barks, and musty barrel houses — classic Buffalo Trace.

Finish: The end warms nicely for a moment with plenty of woody winter spice and a touch of grassy rye notes before the lush vanilla, cherry, and oak finish lingers for just the right amount of time.

Bottom Line:

This is a solid new utility whiskey. It works well as a sipper over some rocks or in a cocktail. Think of it as a solid table whiskey to have around for everyday pours after a hard day of work.

Ranking:

88/100: Solid B+!

Where To Buy:

As of now, this whiskey is readily available online at most retailers for its actual MSRP. That was the hope for Stapleton and the brand. This is meant to be an everyday sipper for his fans — and his fans need to be able to buy it for that to happen.

Drake Is Bad At Golf But Still Plays For This One Reason

Drake has always been someone who likes to try new things. Overall, we have seen this on social media, time and time again. Now, he has all the time in the world to engage in past times and other activities. He has vowed to take a break from the rap game, and although he has a tour with J. Cole next year, he still has a nice break. Throughout the past few weeks, he has been in Turks & Caicos, enjoying the sun as the Winter approaches. It has been a nice vacation for him as he cools out in his favorite spot.

As it turns out, Drizzy recently took a page out of the DJ Khaled paybook. In the Instagram post below, you can see that he took to the golf course to enjoy a round of the sport. As many of you already know, golf is a difficult and oftentimes frustrating sport. It can be hard to really break any ground, and for the most part, you can never really be consistent at it. Only the pros are getting consistent scores and hitting the fairway every time. Drake is well-aware of this, and he is very realistic about his skill.

“I’m trash at this sport but the drinks are hitting,” Drake wrote in his caption. Overall, the drinks are a huge reason to play golf. Furthermore, there is a social aspect to it as you usually play with a group of friends. Although you could have a rough round, being around your buddies does make the whole experience more palatable. Hopefully, with each round of golf that he plays, Drizzy gets at least a little bit better. After all, you don’t want to be bad at the sport forever, especially if you hit the links often.

Let us know your thoughts on golf, in the comments section below. What is the best score you’ve ever gotten? The Sound + Vision Awards Celebrating Artistic Vision In Music Kicked Off With A Hollywood Bash Starring Michter’s Special Pours And Cocktails

From the whiskey we drink to the music we consume to the photos we engage with on social media, creativity drives culture. So it’s no huge surprise to see the title of “creative director” splashed across the IG bios of everyone to ever hold a camera. But what does it actually mean to be a creative director? And who excels in this field that so many people seem so intrigued by?

It’s as if you almost need a judging body to celebrate leaders in this nebulous creative direction landscape, right? Well… away we go!

To celebrate and champion the field of creative direction, Uproxx has joined forces with the Original Creative Agency (OCA) to launch the Sound + Vision Awards. The awards show, coming this winter, will highlight the best in the field — where photography, art, and design intersect with music. Awards will span categories like “Best Album Design,” “Best Festival Show,” and “Best Tour Merch,” among others. It’s a chance to celebrate the minds behind your favorite stage shows, Coachella acts, album covers, gear, and photo campaigns, which are often every bit as evocative as the music they support.

To begin the Sound + Vision rollout, Uproxx and OCA teamed up with Michter’s American Whiskeys to host a kickoff dinner and whiskey tasting. Musical acts Vince Staples, Bonobo, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Jesse Boykins III, Melo-X, and Ric Wilson joined creatives Adrian Martinez, Jesse Lee Stout, Patrick Krause, Julian Gross, Candice Lawler, Tino Schaedler, and more to form a steering committee that will begin the award-nomination process.

As guests arrived, Uproxx’s head sprits writer, Zach Johnston, poured Michter’s elite whiskeys in an atmospheric library while cocktail legend Iain Griffith created a series of unforgettable drinks with various Michter’s expressions, Farmer’s Organic Gin, and Mezcal Los Siete Misterios as building blocks.

Uproxx’s Zach Johnston hosted guests throughout the night in the Michter’s Tasting Library.

The welcome drink, a French 75 riff with a jello shot posing as an ice cube, was tough to top but the highlight of the night was a beeswax-aged old fashioned made with Michter’s US*1 Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. The drink was delivered to guests inside of a wax egg which they then “cracked” over a large ice cube waiting in a rocks glass. It was an impactful moment that Griffith had been plotting for decades and was finally able to pull off for this special evening — a fitting capper to a night based around creativity.

Chef Sophie Dalah, of Sophie’s Table, deftly paired flavors and aesthetics in a series of high concept dishes, creating a bespoke five-course menu that conjured Michter’s whiskey with sly winks. “Corn butter” made with corn husk broth and served with focaccia and scallops swimming in heritage grains both resonated deeply with guests and aligned perfectly with Griffith’s cocktails. The short rib was another standout — it was rich and umami-forward but balanced by delicate five spice and star anise notes. Those who didn’t drink chose from NON non-alcoholic wine and Visitor Beer.

After an explanation of the awards themselves by Uproxx founder Jarret Myer and OCA co-founder Jesse Rogg and a breakdown of the nomination process by Uproxx Editorial Director of Music, Phil Cosores, Johnston shared more Michter’s whiskey pours with the unofficial after-party revelers. Bomberger’s Declaration (the night’s favorite among attendees), Shenk’s Homestead, the iconic 10-year-old rye and bourbon bottles, and the brand-new Toasted Barrel Finish Rye Whiskey were all sampled widely. Seeing that it was an Uproxx bash, naturally the night concluded with some bold attendees stepping up to the mezcal ice luge.

As guests headed for home, 710 Labsmakers of a wide range of responsibly grown cannabis products from concentrates to pre-rolls to whole flower — offered elegant gift bags and Uber codes for the star studded guest list.

Stay tuned to Uproxx for more details on the Sound + Vision Awards, including details on crowd-sourced categories for our audience to vote on!

The Dishes & Drinks You Have To Try At This Year’s Coachella

Coachella is rapidly approaching. While you’re figuring out your artist itinerary, have you bothered to ask yourself what you’re going to eat? That might seem like less of a priority while you’re figuring out how to juggle seeing all your favorites hit the stage but you should probably know that like the musical lineup this year, the food lineup is stacked.

You’re not just going to be choosing whether to grab a slice of pizza or a cheeseburger, you’re going to have to decide if you’re down for a 16-course omakase and sake pairing, which Michelin-starred restaurant is worth your valuable time and money, which innovated chef is going to blow your mind and… well, which slice of pizza or cheeseburger you’re going to pick up.

With over 60 food vendors and hundreds of dishes, it’s a lot to take in, which is why we’re simplifying the process for you by shouting out the 10 food and drink spots and dishes we’re most hyped for. Since Los Angeles-based restaurants, bars, and food spaces are making an appearance this year, I’ve had a lot of personal experience with many of these menus, so I’m going to lean towards those since I can guarantee they’ll be mind-blowing. But, there are a few gems here from out of state that also come with a lot of hype.

I’m also going to put a special emphasis on handheld foods that you can eat on the go. As dope as a family-style dinner is, you’re at a music festival, so I’m going to assume you’re here for the music. Let’s get you back on the grounds ASAP. For a preview of the full culinary lineup, check out our exclusive look here.

Whether you’ve copped a VIP ticket or you’re just going general admission, every section of the festival gets some love on our list. We’re also telling you where on the grounds to find each vendor, and our best guess for the price (don’t expect us to be 100% on this, but expect us to be eerily close, we have our ways).

Let’s dive into the dishes and vendors you don’t want to miss at this year’s Coachella.

Bang Bang Noodles — Szechuan Garlic Noodles

Coachella Food
Bang Bang Noodles

Expected Price: $16

Where To Find:

12 Peaks VIP

Why It’s Essential:

Started by brothers Nelson and Robert Lee, this LA street food turned brick-and-mortar food spot quickly gained notoriety and attention thanks to Robert Lee’s eye-catching mouth-watering flavor-packed take on Chinese Biang Biang noodles. Lee has extensive culinary experience and cut his teeth cooking in Michelin-star restaurants, which is why we’re excited for the Coachella crowd to get its first taste of Bang Bang’s now-famous Szechuan Garlic Noodles.

The noodle dish, which is served with your choice of beef or mushrooms, utilizes hand-pulled noodles, a gentle but flavorful Szechuan sauce, and appetizing garlic, onion, and cilantro aromatics that make the dish a treat for all of our senses.

Camphor — Le Cheeseburger

LeBurger
Camphor

Expected Price: $20.99

Where To Find:

12 Peaks VIP

Why It’s Essential:

One of Downtown Los Angeles’ culinary gems, Camphor is a modern bistro led by respected chefs Max Boonthanakit and Lijo George and is all about combining casual and elevated eats (with a strong influence from Southeastern Asia) with classic French flavors and culinary techniques. It’s incredibly modern, and while the special Family-Style tasting menu the restaurant is bringing sounds appealing, we’re going to suggest you keep it simple with the Le Cheeseburger.

Hitting up a super trendy LA bistro and getting a burger might seem like a waste of Boonthanakit and George’s culinary expertise, but then sitting down for a family-style dinner in the desert also sounds like a vibe killer. The Le Cheeseburger will keep you on your feet while still treating your tastebuds to one of the best burgers you’ve ever had.

Seriously, the way the meat melts in your mouth is unlike any burger you’ve yet to experience, guaranteed, and the way it combines with the smoked gouda is absolute culinary perfection. Don’t forget the fries!

Dave’s Hot Chicken — Chicken Sliders

Coachella Food
Dave

Expected Price: $16

Where To Find:

V7

Why It’s Essential:

Have you ever had a chicken sandwich that makes you exclaim after first bite, ‘This is the best chicken sandwich I’ve ever had’? Well, you will, once you bite into the Dave’s Hot Chicken Slider, and trust us when we tell you that, we’ve been ranking chicken sandwiches for a while now and while Dave’s has yet to appear on a list, right now in 2023, it’s our top pick, no contest.

Available in seven different heat levels (no spice, lite mild, mild, medium, hot, extra hot, and reaper), this slider is topped with earthy kale slaw, thick-cut pickles, and Dave’s sauce, and instantly ignites your tastebuds and floods your brain with serotonin. The sauce is a mix of savory mayo, a bit of citrus, and a heavy blend of pepper, cayenne, and paprika, for a creamy and complex sauce that will blow your mind.

Yes, it’s that good. Go with whatever heat level you’re comfortable with, but we strongly suggest opting for mild or medium for the best experience that doesn’t feel like a challenge.

Kogi — Loaded Korean BBQ Fries

Coachella Food
Kogi/ Terry Smith

Expected Price: $14

Where To Find:

Indio Central Market

Why It’s Essential:

When I found out Kogi wasn’t going to be bringing its delicious Korean tacos and burritos to the Coachella grounds, I was incensed. But knowing that they’ll be bringing the Loaded Korean BBQ fries in tow… I ain’t mad. A tricked-out take on the brand’s Korean Spiced Fries, the Loaded version features the same bed of beer-battered fries tossed with chili salt topped with cheese, caramelized kimchi, salsa rosa, crushed sesame seeds, and Kogi’s short ribs.

It’s the perfect marriage of Mexican and Korean flavors offering up a taste of Los Angeles that makes clear why the city is the ultimate culinary destination. That’s right, I said it, come at my NYC and Texas.

Ronan — Margherita Pie

Coachella Food
Ronan

Expected Price: $23

Where To Find:

12 Peaks VIP

Why It’s Essential:

Helping to make the case that LA is just as good if not better than New York as a pizza hotspot, Chef Daniel Cutler’s Ronan delivers Neapolitan-style pizza that is always prepared with local produce and the finest ingredients and is the pizza spot at Coachella we’re the most psyched about. That’s partly because of the three or four in attendance, it’s the only one we’ve tried, but we wouldn’t suggest a pizza joint to you if it wasn’t absolutely mind-blowing.

While my instinct is to suggest the Spicy Chomper, which features tomato, soppressata, and a four-cheese blend, we’ve given enough love to the meat-eaters in this list, so we’re going to take some time to highlight the equally good Margherita.

Made with San Marzano tomatoes, basil, mozzarella, and pecorino Calabrese, this Margherita pizza is fresh, fragrant, sweet, savory, and light, while still satisfying the way a meat pie does with the perfect fire-charred crust.

You don’t want to miss this pizza spot, especially if you’re an East Coaster who thinks the great pizza debate is settled.

Block Party — Malamente

Coachella Food
Block Party

Expected Price: Unknown

Where To Find:

Outdoor Theater Bar

Why It’s Essential:

No bar captures the magic of Los Angeles quite like visiting Block Party at golden hour. With a great soundtrack and communal vibe, the Highland Park staple is one of our very favorite bars in all of Los Angeles so I’m excited to see how Block Party brings its magical vibe to Indio.

Since Block Party is bringing a special menu of headliner-themed drinks to Coachella, it’s a little hard to pick just one to be excited about so I’m just going to go with Malamente (not pictured), since it’s named for Rosalía, the artist I’m most excited to see.

The Malamente includes Malfi Gin with pink grapefruit, rosemary, and some CO2 for a fizzy body.

El Chino Grande — Chashao Roast Pork ’n Rice

Coachella Food
El Chino Grande

Expected Price: $20

Where To Find:

Craft Beer Barn

Why It’s Essential:

El Chino Grande serves up Taiwanese night market street fare by way of modern San Francisco cuisine. With a menu headed by Chef Christoper Yang, a San Francisco Magazine Rising Star Chef award winner, we couldn’t be more psyched to try El Chino Grande’s Chashao Roast Pork ’n Rice which features a bowl of short grain rice topped with roast pork belly, chashao tare, cabbage slaw, pickles and togarashi mayo.

El Chino Grande is one of the few culinary experiences at Coachella I haven’t yet experienced, but the food pop-up is part of Hén-Zhì, the team of Marcelle Gonzalez Yang and Chef Christopher Yang who are also behind the SF Mission District food spot Piglet & Co, which is excellent! Considering El Chino Grande comes from the same genius minds, we’re psyched and confident enough to make the recommendation.

Cena Vegan — Big Vegan Nachos

Coachella Food
Cena Vegan

Expected Price: $20

Where To Find:

Indio Central Market

Why It’s Essential:

Admittedly, there aren’t a lot of vegan food spots on this list. So, we couldn’t let you go without giving at least one strong suggestion for those who only consume a plant-based diet — be sure to hit up Cena Vegan. Not only is it one of the food options we’re most hyped for at this year’s Coachella, it’s one of the best vendors selling Mexican food at the entire festival, and I’m not sure if you know this or not, but you can make some seriously delicious Mexican food using only plant-based ingredients.

With a menu inspired by authentic Mexican street food, we can’t wait to try Cena Vegan’s Big Vegan Nacho Boat, which features the plant-based meat of your choice (al pastor-style, carne asada-style, carnitas-style, birria-style, polla asado-style, barbacoa-style) over a bed of freshly made tortilla chips, pico de Gallo, salsa, and guacamole. It’s so good even hardcore meat-eaters will be won over by the fresh flavors.

Trill Burgers — Trill OG Burger (Vegan Trill OG Burger)

Coachella Food
Becca Wright/Trill Burgers

Expected Price: $15 / $18

Where To Find:

V7

Why It’s Essential:

I know we already highlighted a burger, but all do respect to Camphor and its ‘Le Cheeseburger,’ sometimes you just want a classic, greasy, no-nonsense smash burger, which is why we’re hyped to finally get a taste of Houston staple Trill Burgers.

The smash burger concept is beloved by Travis Scott, Buster Rhymes, TI, Juvenile, and Fat Joe, and if it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for all of us! The Trill OG burger features two smash patties, curly caramelized onions, American cheese, pickles, and trill sauce, offering up all the classic burger staples without any of those watery vegetables like lettuce and tomato getting in the way.

Best of all, the Trill burger is also available with a plant-based meat patty, which means this is truly a burger spot for everyone!

PDT — Sweet Tea Smash

Coachella Food
Eric Medsker/PDT

Expected Price: Unknown

Where To Find:

Secret Speakeasy Terrace South (access by finding a phone booth in the terrace)

Why It’s Essential:

The famed NYC speakeasy from the East Village, PDT (which stands for Please Don’t Tell), is coming to Coachella and even though I’ve never been to the OG PDT I have to admit, I’m intrigued. Partly because I’ve heard nothing but good things about PDT from east coast friends, and mostly because the speakeasy is located underground. We’re not talking about the NYC location, we mean at Coachella, PDT will be underground.

What does that mean? What will it look like? What will the vibe be? We just have to find out, and we’re willing to bet you feel the same way.

This is another place we’ll be going into blind so I’m just going to suggest the best-sounding drink on the menu, the Sweet Tea Smash (not pictured), which features iced tea, Smooth Ambler Bourbon, lemon, peach, and mint.

Rosalía Has Her Own Flavor Of Coca-Cola — What Does It Taste Like?

As a hardcore fan of Coca-Cola, I have to admit that I’m loving the Coca-Cola Creations line. For the uninitiated, Coca-Cola Creations is a fairly new subsection of the brand that brings a steady stream of brand-new flavors and celebrity collaborations to the soda space. Now, I’m not one to be charmed by celebrity endorsements, I could care less what a celebrity likes, but a new flavor of soda? Bring it on.

So far Coca-Cola Creations has given us a collaboration with DJ and electronic producer Marshmello, which ironically wasn’t a marshmallow-flavored soda but a mix of strawberry and watermelon. Next came a flavor called Starlight, which came across as a mint cola. Another was called Dreamworld, which is a “Dream Flavored” soda that was inspired by M.C. Escher and Salvador Dali (unfortunately, it did not get you high). And yet another was called Byte and was a flavor inspired by pixels. Yes, pixels.

Now Coca-Cola has teamed up with multi-Grammy award-winning artist Rosalía for Coca-Cola Move, a flavor inspired by transformation.

What does “transformation” taste like? Does it taste like a “dream”? Will it ironically taste like marshmallows? We found out by grabbing both Coca-Cola Move and Coca-Cola Move Zero to give you the full rundown on this new flavor.

Coca-Cola Move/Move Zero

Rosalia
Dane Rivera

The Concept:

Before we dive into the flavor, let’s talk about the concept. From the outside, Coca-Cola Move sounds pretty f*cking random. If you’re a Rosalía fan (she was my most listened-to artist of 2022), it all ties in perfectly with her excellent 2022 album Motomami. Motomami is largely an album about transformation, both lyrically and visually with mariposa (butterfly) imagery. Sonically, Rosalía takes the familiar sounds of Latin music and deconstructs it via Virgil Abloh style, thereby transforming it into something that sounds radically brand new.

So as basic as “Move” sounds as a flavor, it’s meant to evoke the same sort of sensation you get from listening to Motomami. This is dope because instead of it being a random and empty celebrity team-up (what the hell does Marshmello have to do with strawberry and watermelon flavored soda?), it seems like Rosalía actually put some thought into the concept around Move. From a flavor perspective, it sort of works.

Rosalia
Dane Rivera

Tasting Notes:

Move has a shifting and evolving flavor. It hits the palate with sweetened coconut notes before transitioning into cotton candy flavors and a hint of freaking marshmallows. As the name suggests, this flavor is always moving across the palate, offering up something new with each taste. There’s a certain spring vibe to this flavor, which ties into the butterfly imagery used on Motomami, but it still has that distinct chocolate and cinnamon flavor you’d associate with Coca-Cola.

The soda has a nice strong fizz but lacks that characteristic bite that Coca-Cola is known for. It’s a lot softer on the throat and the flavor lingers on the tongue like Cherry Coke.

The Zero version of the flavor tastes very similar, but it has even darker notes and comes across as a bit sweeter despite having no sugar. I prefer the full sugar version easily. But if you’re a Coke Zero drinker, the sugarless version is likely more up your alley.

The Bottom Line:

Unfortunately, as cool as I think this soda is from a conceptual standpoint, I don’t know that I need a coconut, cotton candy, marshmallow-flavored soda. Coca-Cola Move is interesting, and as a soda drinker, I appreciate that it’s a unique flavor that doesn’t exist anywhere else. For that reason alone, it’s worth seeking out. But at the end of the day, I rather just have a classic Coke.

Buy Coca-Cola Move and Move Zero.

These Photos From This Year’s Bourbon & Beyond Festival Will Have You Booking Tickets For Next Year

Last weekend, the Bourbon & Beyond Festival came to Louisville, Kentucky, and the city is still nursing a collective hangover. The fest married hard, classic, and country rock bands with everything bourbon in the heart of Bourbon Country. There were hosted whiskey panels with live tastings with the likes of Julian van Winkle (Pappy), Freddie Noe (Beam), and Trey Zoeller (Jefferson’s), just to name a few. And yes, they were pouring Pappy for the crowd at the Van Winkle panel.

Even though bourbon was the focus, there was still a great lineup of podcasts, food, and music (of course). I was lucky enough to attend two of the four days of the festival this year. There was some serious food on display with local chefs like Ed Lee (of Top Chef fame) mixing it up on stage and in the audience. There were about a gazillion different whiskey tents with all the brown juice you could ever want. There were great hang-out spots like the Zelle tent where multi-course dinners were served and small and intimate shows took place. It was a rollicking event with plenty of places to eat, drink, be merry, and even chill while listening to great live tunes.

Below, I’ve compiled some photos to give you the vibe of this year’s fest. I’m covering food, whiskey, the scene, and the music. Hopefully, these pics will inspire you to book a trip to Louisville next year to enjoy it all yourself!

Sensational Foods You Can Only Eat At Coachella

Over the next two weekends, glitter-bedecked scenesters from all over the world will flock to the Southern California desert for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Just like the music, the art, and many of the experiences between stages, the food is curated with the same keen eye for top-caliber talent and unforgettable productions.

With three days each weekend and three meals each day, that leaves (*back of the envelope calculation*)… nine meals to make the most of the experience. 18 if you’re going for both weekends. The problem? There are more than 50 food purveyors, making figuring out what to eat as challenging as deciding between two of your favorite musicians performing at the same time.

Fortunately, many of these culinary delights can be found in restaurants outside the festival. But what about those ephemeral options that can only be enjoyed during the event? These are true once-in-a-lifetime tastes. We can’t live your life for you, but we can do our best to break down eight Coachella food offerings that you won’t want to miss.

That ninth one? That’s your freebie. Roll the dice on something and report back to us.

Sushi by Scratch
Easily the most talked about food offering this year is Chef Phillip Frankland Lee’s 17-course sushi meal served in an Omakase speakeasy, hidden behind an unmarked door. Planned as a new spin on the traditional sushi counter experience, there are a mere 12 seats for each serving, to enhance the intimacy of the experience. Dinner will set you back $375 plus fees, but the memory of this meal will probably live on in your dreams forever.

Outstanding In The Field
For a laid-back, family-style four-course meal along a 275-person long table, head to Outstanding in the Field. Here, 11 of the top chefs in the world will converge for a different dining experience each evening. Chefs Ayinde and Makini Howell, will host a fully plant-based meal. Chef Burt Bakman (SLAB) and Chef Eric Greenspan will be hosting a Passover Seder. Each dinner celebrates local farmers, and the backdrop of Coachella’s VIP Rose Garden will make the occasion that much more special. Rates are $295 plus fees.

Lay’s Fresh 4D
Lay’s, the potato chip company, is joining the party too. This year they’re unveiling a mysterious, reservation-only “Fresh 4D” tasting, which promises 100% sustainably-sourced potatoes from farm to face in under 24-hours. Under a structure they’ve described as “Potadomes” in a press release, it’ll be a multi-sensory snacking experience complete with “three elevated bites that are an ode to the familiar Lay’s flavors consumers know and love.”

Broad Street Oyster Co
If lobster rolls are your religion, the Broad Street Oyster Co pop-up at Coachella is going to be church. This year guests of this reservation-only experience can look forward to burgers, shellfish, anchovy toast, shrimp galore, lobster, and a heavenly round of everyone’s favorite sea-born aphrodisiac, the eponymous oyster. The multi-course meal otherwise top caliber seafood experience.

KazuNori
Thanks to a world-class team up between The Sushi Nozawa Group and California’s renowned sushi restaurant Razorfish, sushi is affordable and accessible again at Coachella. Try it at the Rose Garden with your VIP wristband. Their signature “hand rolled bar” combines convenience and decadence with a fancy-made-casual flair. Plus, you can eat it with your hands!

Umami Burger with Alvin Cailan
Californian’s know Umami, but there’s almost nowhere else to get a chance to be served by the dynamic and beloved Alvin Cailan. Known for his exceptional Filipino food, Cailan has served the likes of Seth Rogen and Padma Lakshmi. He’s also celebrated for founding the now hailed breakfast spot, EggSlut in Los Angeles. Now that he’s teamed up with Umami, leaving it off your must-do list would be a faux pas for any self-respecting foodie.

Salt & Straw
Surprisingly owned in part by pro wrestler and actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Salt & Straw is famous for their “curiously delicious” ice cream shops. This year, Wunderground Coffee teamed up with Salt & Straw to take the science of ice cream even further. They’re slated to serve a totally different adaptogenic ice cream flavor for each day of the festival! Miss a day and you may never have the chance to try that flavor again.

Love Hour
In a rare partnership with six artists from the music lineup, popular Smash Burger icon Love Hour will be serving up collaborative (and secret) items. Artists like Louis the Child, Carly Rae Jepson, Eyedress, Omar Apollo, and more all weighed in to make these unique flavors sing. Each artists’ burger is available for one day only though, so get ‘em while you can.

A Quick Look At All Of The Food Vendors At Coachella This Year

In the insanity of a music lineup stacked with heavyweights, larger-than-life art sculptures, and breathtaking moments, it’s easy to overlook one of the most memorable parts of Coachella – the food!

A simple stroll through the Indio Central Market, Coachella’s main food court, is like falling into an international vortex of savory and sweet fragrances. From top-end juicy burgers to southern-style hot chicken sammies, these culinary delights are right on par with the headliners. Choosing what to eat is no less challenging than deciding which act to hear next. With 26 vegan options, five different pizza vendors, and stylized food from cultures far and wide, it’s a great time to try something new, too.

Just like following your ears will lead to your own personal listening adventure and a universe of new musical discoveries at Coachella, following your other senses is sure to bring similar joy. The difference is most of these handpicked morsels aren’t available to stream later. In fact, outside Coachella, it’s safe to say finding a spread like this all at once is near impossible.

So, what’s new on the menu?

Hot this year, Coachella has five incredible dining options when it comes to cuisine:

  • First and most intriguing for sushi-lovers, there’s Sushi by Scratch ($375 + fees), a hidden Omakase speakeasy with a 17-course sushi meal. It’s even got a secret door!
  • Second, the event annually hosts a full-fledged restaurant experience inside the festival grounds. This year Coachella offers a romantic pop-up with oysters courtesy of Los Angeles’ famed seafood specialists, Broad Street Oyster Co.
  • Third, a cavalcade of top-shelf chefs will assemble in the Polo Fields mythic rose gardens for a 275-person banquet-style meal on long tables. Known as Outstanding In The Field ($275 + fees), the world-class chef lineup is complimented by food from local farms, accompanied by some of the best cocktails, beer, and wine the festival has to offer.
  • Fourth, Lay’s (yes, the potato chip company) is unveiling a mysterious activation they’re calling “Fresh 4D”, which promises to be a totally multi-sensory snacking experience.
  • The last and most robust eating option, which is already accessible with a GA or VIP wristband, can be found in more than 50 food trucks, restaurants, and caterers who converge from around the country for the event. In the Beer Gardens, the campgrounds, the Terrace, 12 Peaks VIP, Rose Garden VIP, and in Coachella’s Indio Central Market, you’ll find these culinary maestros serving all their own specialties in signature flair.
