Tyler, The Creator Does Something He’s Never Done Before On The Charts Thanks To “Chromakopia”

In just a matter of weeks, Tyler, The Creator was able to create immense hype for a new album. It was a pretty sudden and stunning move by the eclectic California multi-talent, but his fans were ready. However, for a new album from one of the biggest hip-hop acts of this generation, CHROMAKOPIA didn’t have a typical release date. T has been preaching that musicians need to go back to dropping new material at the top of the week to allow the listeners to really digest what they are hearing. It was a bold move that wound up working in his favor anyway, as his seventh studio LP would go on to top the Billboard Hot 200.

It moved an astounding 297,500 copies in its first week on the market with a whopping 142,000 coming from pure sales. It’s also his third consecutive time doing this, with 2019’s IGOR, and 2021’s CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST being those other titles. So yes, that isn’t too big of news. However, what is huge is the chart performance of CHROMAKOPIA in terms of its songs. According to Uproxx, Tyler has just done something he’s never accomplished before.

With the new Hot 100 chart now here, the veteran has landed two tracks within the top 10. “St. Chroma” with Daniel Caesar is the higher of the two, sliding in at seven. “Noid,” one of the lead-off cuts, sneaks in at the tenth spot. But the rest of the album did extremely well too. The remainder of the tracklist would find their way into the mix, with the next highest, “Sticky,” coming in at 14. The lowest of them, “I Hope Your Find Your Way Home,” respectably dropped into the 65th spot.

Lauren London’s most recent podcast appearance on A Really Good Cry with Radhi Devlukia might give you just that. During their conversation, she recalled how she met the late legend Nipsey Hussle, with whom she would form a beautiful relationship with before his tragic loss. Even though this love story has a devastating ending, what has endured since then is a deep feeling of love, dedication, and constance that this recollection embodies.

“I do remember how we met,” Lauren London said of Nipsey Hussle. “I was on a set. At the time, he had dropped this Crenshaw mixtape that all the ladies on set were listening to. They were all from L.A., we were in L.A. on this shooting. I was like, ‘It would be really cool if I, like, got them his mixtape and all like, you know, the Crenshaw stuff.’ And so I had reached out to a friend of mine, Danny, like, ‘Hey, do you know Nip? Could you reach out and see if I can get a discount on some of this stuff? ‘Cause I’m kind of buying in bulk.’ He’s like, ‘Yeah.’

“So Nip never reached out,” Lauren London continued. “His manager then reached out to my friend. I didn’t get the discount, either. So I was like, oh, okay! *laughs* I guess he’s not trying to give me it, it’s fine. And so then, I bought the stuff, gave the girls their rap gifts. I end up following him on… I don’t even remember what social media it was. See, my memory is so wack. Maybe it was Twitter? Or… At the time, it was Twitter. I don’t know, I don’t remember. Instagram, maybe. So I follow him and he DM’d me, like, ‘Hey, thank you.’ Yeah, he was in my DMs. ‘Thanks for the support, appreciate you, send me your sizes so I can send you a personal box.’

“Then he gave me his number,” she concluded concerning Nipsey Hussle. “So then I text him, because I was like, I don’t do DMs. Yeah, I thought he was fine. First of all, me following him, I was like… He took the bait. *laughs* No, yes, I always thought he was very attractive. I actually had friends that knew him that were like, ‘I think you guys would get along!” Years before that. But, you know, I was just on my, like, single mom stuff.”

Eminem Performs “Houdini” For The First Time At Massive Detroit Concert

Eminem popped out for a surprise performance at the “Live From Detroit: The Concert At Michigan Central” show on Thursday (June 6). Moreover, the event celebrated the reopening and renovation of the train station, which the public could access on Friday (June 7) after over 30 years without a train leaving that station. The Ford Motor Company had acquired it six years ago, and Marshall Mathers and his longtime manager Paul Rosenberg executive-produced this concert. Other performers and guests included Michigan’s own Big Sean, Slum Village, Illa J, Diana Ross, and more, plus non-313 musicians such as Common and Fantasia.

In fact, a taped replay of “Live From Detroit: The Concert At Michigan Central” will air tonight (Sunday, June 9) at 7PM EST on NBC if you’re curious to check it out. However, if you’re just interested in Eminem’s set, you can find the full event-closing surprise set down below. He performed his new single “Houdini” live for the first time to kick things off, and also spit through “Welcome 2 Detroit” (obviously) and “Not Afraid.” Not only that, but Slim Shady also invited Jelly Roll for a passionate and grand rendition of “Sing For The Moment,” which was a great moment to witness that the crowd and the city seemed to love.

Of course, there are plenty of reasons as to why “Houdini” is getting so much hype right now, and some are more positive than others. For example, Eminem’s new single is now the rap song with the second-highest first week debut on Spotify of all time. It’s an ironic accolade considering that this record remained for about six years before Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” took the top spot last month. Now, the “Superman” spitter’s new track broke that record for the second time in a month, and while he didn’t top K.Dot, it’s still very impressive to witness.

Meanwhile, other fans and detractors still think that Eminem is too corny or unimpressive with “Houdini,” but the overall discussion is much more deep and positive than what we’ve been used to in past years. Even his family comically mocked his exaggerated disses towards them, so there’s a strong push and pull here. But from what this Detroit crowd indicated, The Death Of Slim Shady couldn’t come sooner. The first verse centers around a man speaking to his gun, and the second flips that angle in reverse, all through the metaphor of a romantic partner. If this sounds familiar to you and you hadn’t heard this track before, then you’re probably a fan of Nas’ 1996 classic “I Gave You Power,” in which he raps from the perspective of a gun. After hearing fans compare the two for so long, the Long Beach wordsmith finally figured out what people drew attention to.

“Finna listen to this Nas ‘I Gave You Power,’” Vince Staples tweeted on Thursday (January 4). “Since y’all keep talking about it in regards to the power ballad that is ‘When Sparks Fly’. But Vince Staples doesn’t just look back to his predecessors for inspiration or guidance. In fact, he’s more prone to champion the contemporary, like his good friend, the late and great Mac Miller. “He changed my life, like my perspective, and made me a better person,” the 30-year-old stated during a recent interview. “I used to be confused, like, ‘Why is this white boy with all this money f***ing n***as and not [just] anybody with some substantial talent?’ Like, he would sit there and teach me how to make sure I’m on beat, and like, rap with certain energy. It took a long time… I was other everyday with nothing else to do for, like, months. He was teaching me how to rap on beat, how to project. Moreover, a fan recently uploaded a video in their car of them passing by him in his own car, and when they started talking to him, he simply beckoned the fan to keep it moving, as he was already holding up traffic. In this TikTok clip, the user seemingly called the Atlanta MC “rude” in the caption and said that “Moneybagg Yo could never,” possibly suggesting that he’s better with fan interactions. It was his birthday recently, but it seems like even that cheer couldn’t pick his patience up.

However, this is a very understandable reaction from Lil Baby, as folks can’t expect famous folks to always be in that zone. Of course, there are limits and decent values of respect, but none of that really seemed to apply in this on-the-road situation. Regardless, the 29-year-old definitely has much bigger things to worry about on his mind, especially when it comes to feeding his wider fanbase as a whole. Recently, he let his listeners know that he’ll be “gone” until his new album comes out, so hopefully that means it’s right around the corner.
