Today In Hip Hop History: Big L Was Shot And Killed In Harlem 24 Years Ago

On February 15, 1999 the Hip Hop legend was murdered at 45 West 139th Street in Harlem after being shot nine times in the face and chest in a drive-by shooting. Gerard Woodley, one of Big L’s friends shot in the head near the same street in 2016, was arrested three months later but was shortly released. The shooting was said to have been retaliation for something Big L’s brother did. Unfortunately his murder case remains unsolved.

Big L began his career with the Hip Hop trio, Three the Hard Way. His first notable appearance came on Lord Finesse’s “Yes You May (Remix)”. He released his debut album, Lifestylez of da Poor & Dangerous, in 1995 and in 98′, he founded Flamboyant Entertainment, his own indie label, through which he released one of his most popular singles, “Ebonics”. His second studio album, The Big Picture, was put together by his manager, Rich King, and released the year after his death. It went certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

A documentary is in the works titled Street Struck: The Big L Story. Big L is buried at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, New Jersey.

Rihanna Talks Motherhood And Hints At New Album This Year

Fresh off her legendary performance at Apple Music’s Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show, Rihanna sat down for a cover story with British Vogue, where she shared her life since motherhood, ASAP Rocky, and hinted at her comeback. British Vogue features new photos of Roro’s new family and more. The magazine posted on Twitter. A new era begins – and for @Rihanna nothing will ever be the same. Fresh from the Super Bowl and that very special announcement, Rihanna is British Vogue’s phenomenal March 2023 cover star – but this is no ordinary cover. This is a family portrait.

In her wide-ranging discussion with Giles Hattersley, Rihanna shed light on her forthcoming ninth studio album, revealing she wants it to drop this year. When it arrives, the project will be Riri’s first full-length offering since 2016’s Anti.

“Like, honestly, it’d be ridiculous if it’s not this year,” she shared. “But I just want to have fun. I just want to make music and make videos.”

Rihanna added, “And I need the right background music with the visuals. I can’t just go shoot a video to me talking.”

Rihanna opened up about motherhood and her life before having a child.

“Oh, my God, it’s legendary,” she said of being a mother. “It’s everything. You really don’t remember life before, that’s the craziest thing ever. You literally try to remember it – and there are photos of my life before – but the feeling, the desires, the things that you enjoy, everything, you just don’t identify with it because you don’t even allow yourself mentally to get that far, because it doesn’t matter.”

“Essentially, from one person I became two,” she continued, describing the experience of giving birth. “You walk into the hospital as a couple and leave as a family of three. It’s nuts. And oh, my gosh, those first days are insane. You don’t sleep. At all. Not even if you wanted to. We came home, cold turkey, had no one. It was just us as parents and our baby. Man, you’re a zombie for the most part.”

Tyler Perry Donates $750,000 To Save Seniors Homes From Rising Property Taxes

TV/movie mogul Tyler Perry is donating $750,000 to help low-income seniors in Atlanta not be forced out of their homes by rising property taxes.

With more people moving near Tyler Perry Studios, land values are rising and property taxes are rising. It is said to be the main reason longtime residents living on a fixed income are forced out of their homes and their lives are disrupted.
Tyler, who came in at No. 3 on the Forbes list of the Top 10 highest-paid entertainers of 2022 — raking in $175M last year — recently reached out to Atlanta mayor Andre Dickens to help keep these residents in their homes.

Sources say Tyler’s money will also effectively freeze property taxes for 100 low-income seniors for 20 years. This money will pay the difference between current property taxes and property tax increases over the next 20 years.

In addition to Tyler’s $750,000 allotted for 2023, he is said to contribute about $500,000 each year for the next four years… totaling about $2.75 million. It will reportedly be handled by the Invest Atlanta Partnership, the nonprofit arm of the development agency.

Tyler is the only black male among Forbes’ top 10 highest-paid entertainers…and his priority is said to be giving back to the community that means so much to him. .

Always helping out senior citizens, thousands of grocery shoppers were surprised during senior hours in Atlanta and New Orleans when Perry picked up their tabs at Kroger stores in Atlanta and Winn-Dixie stores. He also gave $21,000 in tips at an Atlanta restaurant.

Brooklyn Rapper Sleepy Hallow Released From Prison

Footage has surfaced earlier this week of drill rapper Sleepy Hallow being released from prison after serving a little under eight months on an illegal weapons charge.

The video, which was released by Hallow’s close friend and collaborator Sheff G, who is currently serving two years on a weapons charge himself, shows Hallow popping a bottle of champagne outside of the correctional facility where he was being held.

“@_sleepyhallow_ home I’m next free me free the guys,” Sheff wrote in the caption.

Hallow, whose real name is Tegan Chambers, was arrested on June 24, 2022 for second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

The 23-year-old was on probation at the time and was subsequently sentenced and given a projected prison release date of February 13, 2023.

Willie D created the “Geto Boys” podcast to include the group after gaining notoriety with his own, renowned “Willie D Live” podcast, which garnered hundreds of thousands of views since its launch in 2015. On the most recent episode of the Geto Boys podcast, Willie D confronted the group’s front man, Scarface, for not including him in the performance of “Mind Playing Tricks On Me” during the Grammys’ commemoration of Hi[ Hop’s 50th anniversary.

Willie D stated, “Slighted? I feel beyond slighted. Like what I’m tryna figure out is … First of all, I ask you Wednesday when we left here, I said, ‘What you got for the weekend?’ You said, ‘I’m finna go fuck with this Grammys thing.’ I said, ‘Alright man, safe travels.’ Because, you know, that’s how we do it. Saturday come, I’m online and an article comes across about the Grammys. And I see ‘Geto Boys and Scarface’ in the lineup.”

Scarface replied Willie D, “I can stand on my own two feet with no Geto Boys,” and Willie agreed. Willie then stated, “Remember I’m the one who said, ‘Hey man, you oughta call yourself Scarface.’ So I ain’t gon’ never hate on you. Never. When I see you win, I see Geto Boys win because we are a group.”

Tiny’s Ex-Friend Shekinah Jo Goes Off ‘All Men Cheat…I’m A Bitter Black B****’

Reality TV personality and hair stylist Shekinah Jo Anderson is speaking out about men and how they ‘all have something with them’. Bright and early on Valentine’s Day, Tiny Harris’ ex-friend decided to share that she didn’t have a Valentine’s and revealed she’s been single for a while. She called herself a ‘bitter black b****, said that all men cheat and berated anyone who disagreed with her.

Most people became familiar with Shekinah through Tiny’s VH1 reality show T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle. The duo received a spin-off titled Tiny & Shekinah’s Weave Trip. After the show, Shekinah claimed that rapper T.I. was disrespectful to her off-camera. She described one incident where T.I. allegedly mocked her and called her “the help.” Going off on a series of IG lives, Shekinah verbally attacked the rapper and said she hates men because of him. She went back and forth with Khia who gave her a run for her money but not everyone will back down to insults.

This morning, Shekinah announced on her Instagram live that she was a ‘bitter black b****’ and all men cheat. When she was advised by one follower to look elsewhere and stop choosing the same type of man. Shekinah went off calling the social media user fake and called her all sorts of names trying to force the user to go live and argue. Let’s pray for Shekinah, she seems to go through a lot. She started out telling her followers to lead with love and ended it cussing out another black woman.

50 Cent posted Rainey on his Instagram, saying, “@michaelraineyjr on some s**t, he said where you at @lilmeechbmf?” The comment immediately garnered a response from the son of reputed drug kingpin Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory, who said, “I’m working on being immortal 5 @50Cent these guys still mortal… let’s go to lunch later I’ll give u some free game @michaelraineyjr.”

Rainey replied, “how you working on being immortal but ya show dead? March 17 we gon show you how it’s done ok take notes.”

Rihanna’s Scores Huge Ratings for Super Bowl Performance

This Sunday Rihanna revealed her second pregnancy while performing for the Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show. Not only did the diva honor the late fashion guru Andre Leon Talley with her wardrobe donning a floor-sweeping oversized puffy coat. The billionaire singer/entrepreneur also made history by being the first half-time performer to perform pregnant. Running through her list of hit songs, Riri surprised fans by not bringing out any guests and the ratings are now out.

Rihanna pulled in some of the highest ratings for her performance.

According to reports, viewing peaked during Rihanna’s set with 118.7 million viewers, making her the second-most-watched halftime show behind Katy Perry in 2015 with 121 million.

Disneyland Resort announced that for a limited time beginning Feb. 15 at Hollywood Land in Disney California Adventure Park, guests will have the opportunity to encounter Moon Girl from the newest Disney series “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur,” which debuts on Feb. 10 on Disney Channel and Feb. 15 on Disney.

The series follows the adventures of 13-year-old super-genius Lunella Lafayette and her 10-ton T-Rex, Devil Dinosaur, whom she accidentally brings into present-day New York City. The duo works together to protect Lunella’s Lower East Side neighborhood from danger.

Moon Girl arrives at Disneyland Resort as a part of Celebrate Soulfully: a combination of food, entertainment, and experiences that highlight and celebrate Black stories.
