The Grammys In Memoriam Included A Tony Bennett Duet, A Call For Ceasefire, And A Stunning Tina Turner Tribute

The Grammys’ In Memoriam tribute for 2024 was necessarily a rough time, as so many legends passed away since early 2023, including Sinead O’Connor, Tina Turner, and more. The segment saw Stevie Wonder deliver a simulated duet of “For Once In My Life” with Tony Bennett, as well as “The Best Is Yet To Come.” Then Annie Lennox covered Sinead O’Connor’s Prince-penned “Nothing Compares 2 U.”

Fittingly, Lennox used the moment to call for a ceasefire in West Asia (commonly called the Middle East) in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palenstine over the Gaza Strip. It was a fitting moment because O’Connor notably used her platform to make passionate political statements, including criticizing the Catholic church. She took a lot of punishment from the media and the public for her positions, finding vindication years later.

Meanwhile, there were spoken tributes to Clarence Avant, the “Godfather of Black Music,” form Lenny Kravitz, and Tina Turner, the Queen of Rock & Roll, by Oprah Winfrey. Meanwhile, Jon Batiste performed Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Optimistic” for the former, while Fantasia Barrino performed “Proud Mary” for the latter, decked out in a classic Turner look. Fantasia even left the stage to dance with the audience, including Dua Lipa.

Most Successful “American Idol” Stars: From Fantasia To Jennifer Hudson

After American Idol first aired in 2002, it revolutionized reality television, especially in the music world. From its beloved contestants, judges, and host to the show’s format and cult following, it left a remarkable impact on the entertainment industry. At its commercial height, the famous singing competition was a cultural phenomenon that gave aspiring singers a chance at a music career.

While many artists now build success through social media, they used to either get discovered through different channels of the industry or try to land an audition at American Idol. Before taking a brief hiatus in 2016, the show helped launch the careers of many major stars throughout its first 15 seasons. Many former contestants have gone on to establish prolific careers for themselves in music and beyond. Today, we are looking at the most successful American Idol stars.

Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson won the first season of American Idol back in 2002, instantly becoming the show’s first big star. With her powerful singing voice, she found success as a pop artist while also combining elements of rock and country into her music. The Grammy award-winning singer is known for her chart-topping hit songs like “My Life Would Suck Without You,” “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” and other classics including “Since U Been Gone.” After taking American Idol and her music career to great heights, Clarkson now hosts her own talk show. Original Idol judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell appeared as guests on The Kelly Clarkson Show, resulting in a full circle moment.

Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson may have not been a finalist on American Idol, but she became one of the most successful stars in the show’s history. After finishing seventh in the show’s third season, established a multifaceted career for herself. She starred in Dreamgirls, among other films, and released three studio albums, including her gold-certified self-titled debut. A jack of all trades in the entertainment industry, Hudson is an EGOT winner, receiving the four major American awards in entertainment: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. Like Kelly Clarkson, she now hosts her own talk show, where she recently confirmed her relationship with Common.

Fantasia

Season 3 of American Idol was an unforgettable one, launching the careers of two of its biggest stars. Jennifer Hudson finished in seventh place, but Fantasia won the competition. Following Idol, the North Carolina singer instantly started a successful career in music and acting. Fantasia released her platinum-selling debut album, Free Yourself in 2004. Her self-titled follow-up included the hit single, “When I See U,” which is now an R&B classic. She has topped the charts and won Grammys with her blends of soul and gospel, which often incorporates elements of hip hop. Fantasia first starred in The Color Purple on Broadway in 2007, and recently reprised her role for a film adaptation which has racked up numerous award nominations.

Carrie Underwood

Undoubtedly the most successful American Idol star is Carrie Underwood, who won the fourth season in 2005. She is the most-awarded country artist of all time and has won eight Grammy awards. Singles like “Jesus Take the Wheel” and “Before He Cheats” were immediate crossover hits, topping the country charts. Her first four albums are multi-platinum, boasting numerous hit singles each. In addition to her successful and impactful career in music, Underwood has ventured into acting, playing many roles, including Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music Live! Carrie Underwood set the bar incredibly high for what aspiring singers can attain after winning American Idol.

Katherine McPhee

Katherine McPhee finished as a runner-up on American Idol’s fifth season in 2006. The pop and R&B singer’s self-titled debut album on RCA arrived in 2006, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. Aside from releasing six albums, McPhee has been successful in TV and film. She also starred as Jenna Hunterson in Waitress on Broadway. Since finishing as a contestant, Katherine McPhee has returned to American Idol as a guest performer. She later married music titan, David Foster.

Jordin Sparks

Jordin Sparks is the youngest American Idol winner in the show’s history. She finished victorious at the age of 17 on the show’s sixth season in 2007. That same year, Sparks released her platinum-selling self-titled debut. The album included the hit single “No Air,” a duet with Chris Brown. Her second album, 2009’s Battlefield, included the Top 10 hit of the same name. Aside from music, Jordin Sparks has acted both on screen and onstage. She starred alongside Whitney Houston in the film, Sparkle, and in Broadway musicals including In the Heights and Waitress.

Adam Lambert

In 2009, Adam Lambert finished as the runner-up on American Idol’s eighth season but is one of the show’s most successful stars. He has released five studio albums, including the chart-topping Trespassing in 2012. Lambert is a successful pop solo artist but has also established a relationship with the remaining active members of Queen, touring with the band multiple times. Outside of music, he has guest judged on Project Runway, RuPaul’s Drag Race, X Factor, and American Idol.

Halle Bailey, Oprah, Fantasia & Taraji P. Henson Shine In ‘The Color Purple’

The Color Purple

Fantasia Barrino, Halle Bailey, Danielle Brooks, and Taraji P. Henson stole the spotlight as the highly anticipated premiere of the 2005 stage musical adaptation of the cult classic, The Color Purple, finally hit theaters on Christmas Day.

‘The Color Purple’: Largest Opening On Christmas Day

Directed by Blitz Bazawule and produced by Oprah Winfrey, The Color Purple grossed over $47 million and has already garnered Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award nominations.

With an A-list cast including Danielle Brooks, H.E.R, and more, The Color Purple exceeded box office expectations, becoming the largest opening on Christmas Day in over a decade. In theaters nationwide, audiences eagerly embraced the long-awaited adaptation of The Color Purple, where the trailer even heightened excitement.

Many fans showed their enthusiasm by donning purple attire for the premiere. One dedicated viewer named @Scrappmusiq wrote:

“The Color Purple deserved its 10s!! The movie was phenomenal. It moved me in ways that Broadway and musicals hope to. I was enthralled the entire movie. It’s just so good for those who appreciate theater arts. It’s up there with Dreamgirls for me.”

Boosie Gives His Review

While the film garnered admiration from the majority, rapper Boosie Badazz shared a critical perspective. In a now-deleted tweet, he expressed:

“I HAD TO WALK OUT THIS COLOR PURPLE MOVIE ( N TWO OTHER OLDER COUPLES WALKED OUT ALSO.) BECAUSE I HAD MY LITTLE GIRLS WITH ME N IT SEEMED LIKE A RAINBOW LOVESTORY! GOOD ACTING BUT WHOEVER WROTE THIS SCRIPT IS PUSHING THE NARRATIVE HARD! AS A PARENT I WILL NOT LET MY LITTLE GIRL WATCH THIS FILM”

However, it seems Boosie may not have fully understood the plot, as the 1982 novel book by Alice Walker explores the queer love story between characters Shug Avery (played by Taraji P. Henson) and Celie (played by Fantasia). Director Blitz Bazawule stated:

“Celie is a queer icon, and Alice Walker has been very vocal about that.” He continued, “Our job was to just lean into it harder, and give a little bit more context and a little more beauty to her coming-out moment.”

The Color Purple has a history of controversy, with the original novel facing book bans due to its depiction of homosexuality and other “controversial” topics. Nonetheless, the film embraces the significance of these themes and showcases the resilience of the characters.

New Trailer For ‘The Color Purple’ Film Remake Offers Deeper Glimpse Into The Powerful Story

The highly anticipated remake of The Color Purple has released a new trailer, providing viewers with a deeper glimpse into the upcoming film. The star-studded trailer, featuring Halle Bailey, Ciara, Taraji P. Henson, and more, showcases the struggles and triumphs of the characters, effectively building anticipation for its release on December 25.

Coming Soon

In the new trailer for The Color Purple remake, released on Oct. 10, viewers get a sneak peek into what to expect when the film hits theaters.

Fantasia takes on the role of Celie, a woman trapped in a loveless marriage, longing for her sister’s return. The sneak peek showcases the complexity of Celie’s emotions and the abuse endured by her, and Nettie, played by Halle Bailey and Ciara, respectively.

With scenes depicting the sisters’ younger years, the trailer provides context for the heartache Celie endures daily and sets the tone for a powerful tale of resilience, friendship, and self-worth.

.

The Trailer

A pivotal moment in the trailer is when Sophia, a friend of Celie played by Orange is the new Black’s Danielle Brooks, confronts her husband, Mister, after learning about his mistreatment of Celie. As Sophia defiantly states:

“I came here out of respect. But if there ain’t none to get, there sure ain’t none to give.”

This powerful scene showcases the strength and solidarity of the female characters in the face of adversity.

Taraji P. Henson breathes life into the character of Shug Avery, shown in the trailer on a boat heading to a bar, exuding confidence in a stunning red gown with a feathered headpiece. As Shug begins singing “Push Da Button,” the trailer’s tone shifts, emphasizing a message of empowerment and self-assertion for Celie.

Throughout the trailer, snippets of dialogue and flashback scenes highlight the bond between Celie and Nettie. As young Nettie tells her sister, “Keep your head high just like mom taught us,” the film’s themes of resilience and sisterhood are magnified.

Iconic & Nostalgic

One of the most iconic moments from the original story is brought to life in the trailer—the dinner scene where Celie declares her independence. When Mister threatens her, Celie confidently responds:

“It’s time I be free from you.”

The trailer ends with Celie, along with Sofia, Squeak, and Shug, standing as a sisterhood, symbolizing unity and strength. The remake of The Color Purple boasts a star-studded cast, including H.E.R, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, Tamela Mann, Deon Cole, Ciara, and Corey Hawkins, making this a film eagerly anticipated by fans of the original and newcomers alike.

Fantasia Alleges Racial Profiling Incident By AirBNB Host

Fantasia

Fantasia took to her social media to express her outrage, and disappointment after allegedly experiencing racial profiling during a stay at an AirBNB property. The incident raised concerns about racial discrimination within the popular vacation rental platform.

Fantasia Airs Out Frustrations

In a series of tweets, Fantasia detailed the events that unfolded during her stay. On Sunday, Dec. 17th, the Grammy-winning singer shared her grievances, accusing the host of attempting to kick her and her family out of the rental late at night.

In a tweet, Fantasia summed it up in what happened over the weekend. She stated:

“ My stomach is so uneasy this morning as I’m riding back to my home in the cold and rain. I don’t say much when people do me wrong, but I can’t stay quiet on how my family and I were just treated from a host with @Airbnb @airbnbhelp trying to kick my kids and I out at 12:00 midnight. The host accused us of having a party with loud noises outdoors because they saw balloons being dropped off and a game truck with no generator in the early part of the day.”

She continued:

“The amount of guests we reserved for are the amount of guest who stayed the night. They never said we weren’t allowed to have any company over!! It’s evident from the sayings on the wall, to the outdoor fire pit/jacuzzi and a well-equipped game room in the garage/poker table that people Hosts parties and/or gatherings here on the lake often as there were weights with balloon ribbon left in the garage from a previous party at the house.”

The “When I See You” singer concluded her tweet with:

“It’s evident to me this was racial profiling and the treatment we received was due to the color of our skin. I wanted my son to enjoy his friends (10-12) year old and make him feel special as I have been traveling for the last 35+ days promoting a movie I starred in. This time, I dare not stay quiet.”

Fans Speculate

Supporters flooded Fantasia’s tweet with messages of solidarity and criticism towards AirBNB. One user (@90skhidd) stating, “I know there are reasons that you cannot tell us the hosts name but I wish you could so we won’t send another black dollar their way!”

Another user (@tweetwithashlee) stating, “Ain’t no way they got all them amenities and don’t want people throwing a party. Even so, they could have said something instead of waiting until midnight to try to inconvenience you & kick you and your children out. Leftover balloon weights were there too? Yeah, something ain’t adding up. @Airbnb @AirbnbHelp You might want to act, and quickly.”

While AirBNB and the host have yet to comment on the matter, the incident has sparked a conversation about systemic racism and the need for accountability within the vacation rental industry.

‘The Color Purple’

In other Fantasia news, the highly anticipated remake of The Color Purple has released a new trailer, providing viewers with a deeper glimpse into the upcoming film. The star-studded trailer, featuring FantasiaHalle Bailey, Ciara, Taraji P. Henson, and more, showcases the struggles and triumphs of the characters, effectively building anticipation for its release on December 25.

AirBNB Goes For 2

This incident involving Fantasia brings to mind a similar situation that occurred in 2018, when Bob Marley’s granddaughter, Donisha Prendergast, and her friends were surrounded by police while checking out of an AirBNB property. Similar to Fantasia’s experience, Prendergast and her friends believed they were racially profiled and considered taking legal action against the law enforcement agency involved.
