“Shrek 5” Confirmed, Original Stars Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, And Mike Myers In Talks To Reprise Beloved Roles

It’s been over ten years since the last instalment in the Shrek franchise, Shrek Forever After, landed in theatres. However, now, executives at DreamWorks have decided that it’s finally the perfect time to bring back the world’s favourite ogre, hopefully restoring him to his former glory. In an interview with Variety, Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri shared the big news, even hinting that we may hear the return of some beloved original voice actors in the forthcoming project.

“Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return,” he told the outlet. The entertainers in question are Mike Myers, who voiced Shrek, as well as his bride, Princess Fiona (taken on by Cameron Diaz). Of course, the case wouldn’t be complete without Eddie Murphy, who brings the beloved Donkey to life in the first four Shrek films. “We anticipate the cast coming back,” Meledandri noted, though he made it clear that no one has officially signed on the dotted line as of right now.

While chatting with Variety, the industry executive expressed his joy over reading about Murphy’s interest in DreamWorks producing an entire series of films based solely on his character. “If [they] ever came with another Shrek, I’d do it in two seconds,” the Haunted Mansion actor previously confirmed. “I love Donkey. They did Puss In Boots movies. I was like, ‘They should have done a Donkey movie.’” By his standards, Eddie thinks that his four-legged critter is far funnier than Antonio Banderas’.

As for the other former cast members, Diaz announced her retirement from the acting industry in 2018. However, she recently stepped back into the spotlight for an upcoming project called Back in Action, which also stars Kyle Chandler, Jamie Foxx, and Glenn Close. According to DailyMail, the Netflix Original is expected to drop in 2024. Finally, regarding Myers, the Canadian has also been in talks to reprise his classic role as Austin Powers as of late, though it remains unclear if we’ll see that come to fruition. Eddie Murphy Jokes That Martin Lawrence Is Paying For Their Children’s Wedding

Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence are undeniably two of the biggest names in comedy. As it turns out, their families might become intertwined in the near future, and if that’s the case, the former specifically expects the latter to pay for the wedding ceremony.

The duo’s children, Jasmin Lawrence and Eric Murphy have been publicly dating since June 2021. As it turns out, their parents aren’t the ones who first introduced them. According to PEOPLE, they previously “became really good friends because we bonded on a lot of things.”

The fact that they both grew up in Hollywood allowed the young couple to better “[understand] each other.” Additionally, Jasmin and Eric are both the firstborn children of their fathers.

Martin shares his daughter with his ex-wife, Patricia Southall. The German-born actor is also a father to 20-year-old Amara and 22-year-old Iyanna. As for Murphy, his aforementioned son is the eldest of 10. Eric’s mother is The Haunted Mansion‘s ex, Paulette McNeely.

“My daughter just got married, and I had to pay — really had to pay,” the 61-year-old explained. “You have to do the same, Martin. “Don’t try to switch it up — don’t try to change no shit, do no Hollywood switch. You’re paying for the wedding. If it goes down, Martin is paying. And the wedding better be wonderful.”

Besides planning a wedding, Eddie Murphy may also be back on a film set in the near future. He recently appeared alongside Nia Long, Jonah Hill, and Lauren London in Netflix’s You People, and now, the Brooklyn native has said that she’d love to act alongside the comedian in another romantic comedy.

Eddie Murphy Says He’s Down For A ‘Donkey’ Spin-Off Movie: ‘I’d Do It In Two Seconds’

ar

With Puss In Boots getting 3 of his own spinoff movies and a Nickelodeon TV show, Eddie Murphy is wondering why Shrek creators didn’t give Donkey the same love. In a recent interview, the comedy legend said that he’d agree to do another Shrek movie and even a Donkey spin-off “in two seconds.”

“I’d absolutely be open if they ever came with another Shrek, I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey,” Murphy shared with ETalk. “You know, they did Puss In Boots movies. I was like, ‘They should have did a Donkey movie. Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t as funny as the Donkey.”

“I would do a Donkey movie. I would do another Shrek in two seconds.”

The interviewer then told Murphy that he should pull some strings to get a Donkey movie done. Murphy said that decision is all up to Dreamworks.

“That’s Dreamworks Animation,” he said. “They have to want to do it. Dreamworks, if you all want to do it, just call me. I’m ready, I’m sitting and ready to do Donkey.”

Murphy is fresh off the release of You People, which co-stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Nia Long, Jonah Hilla and Lauren London. Murphy was also recently awarded the Cecil B. DeMille award at the 2023 Golden Globes. In his acceptance speech, he shared the three things that will guarantee you success in Hollywood: 1. paying your taxes, 2. minding your business, 3. keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out your f*****g mouth.

Netflix’s You People Opens with 2.8 Million Household Viewers

Netflix's You People Opens with 2.8 Million Household Viewers

You People is a Netflix smash. The new movie starring Eddie Murphy, Jonah Hill, Lauren London, and Nia Long was watched by 2.8 million households from Friday, Jan. 27 to Sunday, Jan. 29.

The movie is now the second biggest movie premier of the past six months for the streaming service.

The approximately 3 million households attraction for You People was second only to The Gray Man, which launched in summer 2022. According to Samba TV, You People even outperformed the current Oscar candidate Glass Onion in its opening weekend.

Philadelphia, PA over-indexed the most (+60%) of the top 25 largest DMAs, followed by Atlanta, GA (+35%) and Detroit, MI (+20%). You People outperformed Gen Z (A20-24) and millennial (A25-34) households by 8% and 3%, respectively. It was significantly over-indexed with Black households (59%), and somewhat with Hispanic households (2%).

“Netflix’s latest star-packed rom-com ‘You People’ struck gold with audiences this weekend, blowing past the opening audience numbers of ‘Glass Onion’ to become the second biggest movie premiere for the streamer in the past six months in initial two-day viewership. Led by legendary comedian Eddie Murphy, ‘You People’ drew nearly 3 million households in its first weekend on Netflix, the most viewers for any recent Netflix original movie since this summer’s ‘The Gray Man.’

“Helmed by Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, the movie particularly resonated with Black households, who were overwhelmingly more likely to watch the movie than the national average – 59% more likely in fact, with The City of Brotherly Love, Atlanta, and Detroit all significantly over-indexing the national average viewership by strong double digits. Younger audiences were also drawn into the rom-com, including Gen Z and millennial households who also over-indexed in viewership.

“Recognizing the cross generational and diverse appeal of Eddie Murphy, Netflix leaned in and heavily-promoted the movie with prime placements during the Eagles vs. 49ers football game which no doubt helped lift overall discovery and drive tune in this weekend.”
