Drake “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” 9th Anniversary: Revisit The Classic “Know Yourself”

Drake really put his haters and doubters on notice with his 2015 mixtape If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late. The Canadian was known for his softer R&B side after dropping projects like Take Care and So Far Gone. So, when If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late came out, we got to see the darker, leaner, and meaner side. It was a great change of pace to bring more minimal beats to allow for the lyrics to be the focal point. One of the prime examples of this working to perfection for Drake is on “Know Yourself.”

Everyone knows the iconic beat switch halfway through after the extremely quotable line, “I was runnin’ through the 6 with my woes.” That line itself was debated online at the time because fans thought Drake meant he was battling issues while making a name for himself living in Canada. Noah “40” Shebib, one of Drake’s closest collaborators cleared that up. “It’s a South slang word woadie meaning my friend or my n****.”

Relisten To “Know Yourself” By Drake

While some people still view Take Care or Nothing Was The Same as his best albums, there is a conversation to be had for IYRTITL. “Know Yourself” is a major reason reason why. It is so well-produced and structured while giving you confidence when it comes on. The conviction in which Drake raps is bone-chilling and it helps carry the momentum through the rest of the tracklist.

What were your thoughts on “Know Yourself” by Drake from If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late? Is this the best track from the album, why or why not? Where does this song rank in his discography? What is your overall opinion on the album right now and why? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to tell us in the comments below. Quotable Lyrics:

This is that nasty flow
Top boy in this s***, I’m so international
Reps up is in here
Got P Reign and Chubby and TJ and Winnie and woah
Yeah, and you know how that shit go
I might declare it a holiday as soon as Baka get back on the road

Rappers Who Own Their Masters

One of the greatest business moves artists and rappers can make is owning their masters. This means they control where their music is licensed (in TV, film, and advertisements) and, as a result, reap the financial rewards. Record labels began taking ownership of artist’s masters in the 1950s. During the “golden age of vinyl,” they cornered the market. And yet, to this day, “…a label is still contractually owning the voices of people who spent their whole lives honing their craft and becoming great writers, vocalists, and superstars, ” said Chance the Rapper in an interview with Success. Many of today’s rappers were inspired by trailblazing artists like Ray Charles and Prince, who took control of their legacies by regaining their masters. Here’s a list of rappers who have been wise enough to gain ownership of their masters.

21 Savage

In January 2017, fresh off the enormous success of his EP Savage Mode, 21 leveraged a deal with Epic Records.  He has a 70/30 split with the label. “I make more money off my album sales than I do off touring. For a lot of rappers, most of their money comes from touring,” he admitted on the podcast A Million Dollaz Worth of Game.

The American Dream rapper says that his masters serve as generational wealth for his family. However, if the bag is long enough, he has no problem with handing them over. “But…if a m-thaf-cka come and say, ‘Aye…I got a billion for your masters,’ that m-thaf-cka’s gone,” he added.

Kanye West

“My children gonna own my masters…not your children, my children”.

Kanye West is currently without a record label or a music publisher but has made one thing clear: he has no intention of selling his catalog. Just last year, West acquired his masters from the 2013 Yeezy album up to the present. Def Jam owns the copyright to his recordings up to sometime in the mid-2010s and distributed subsequent releases up to last year’s Donda album. But his actual deal with the label ended in 2021. Sony Publishing will continue to administer his work (such as Vultures ) per the terms of the deal for an unspecified time.

Billboard estimated the songs generate $13.25 million in publishing royalties annually. Sources said West earns $5 million from his share, valuing the catalog at roughly $175 million. In an effort to give artists the same autonomy, Kanye also tweeted in Sept 2020 that he would be giving all of his G.O.O.D. Music artists back the 50 percent share of their masters. He also proposed an eight-point plan that would revolutionize the music industry. Artists and rappers would receive master ownership, short-term deals, an 80/20 split of royalty payments in the artist’s favor, and transparency.

Jay-Z

Media mogul Jay-Z demanded control of his Def Jam masters when he became president of the label in 2004. The rapper’s masters would later revert back to him in 2014, with his publishing rights returned to him around the same time in a separate deal with EMI. As of 2021, his music catalog was worth $95 million. In an interview last year with CBS Morning’s with Gayle King, he revealed that he’s not interested in selling his musical repertoire. “I want my kids to see my work and if they decide to sell it, then it’s up to them.”

Chance The Rapper

Chance The Rapper has mentioned many times the huge impact owning his masters has made on his career. In 2016, Chance declined a record deal with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music, opting to stay independent. It paid off because he owns all his recording rights, publishing, and distribution. The rapper, who has a 50/50 royalty split, continues to influence rappers and emphasize being in control of one’s career. In 2022, he even helped iconic singer Anita Baker regain control of her master recordings after she asked fans to stop streaming her music.

Drake

In 2021, Drake received the largest deal in music history from Republic Records and Universal. The $400 million deal included recordings, publishing, merchandise, and visual media projects. Prior to the Scorpion rapper’s historic deal, Michael Jackson held the top spot as having the largest deal in music history. According to reports, $250 million went to his estate in 2010 from Sony Music.

LL Cool J

An OG in the game, LL Cool J has owned his masters for over 20 years. The Queens native has full authority over all 13 of his studio albums on Def Jam. In an interview with Million Dollaz Worth of Game, he revealed that being sampled by rappers like Rick Ross and The Notorious B.I.G. proves his legacy is cemented.

Drake’s Super Bowl Bet Earned Him $1 Million — More Than Enough To Replace His Ruined Watch Party Meal

At Super Bowl LVIII, not only did the Kansas City Chiefs break the dreaded “Drake curse,” but they also won him $1 million after his 2:1 bet on them paid off big time. Drake’s partnership with betting app Stake has notoriously earned — and lost — him a lot of money, but this time around, he had a good reason for putting his money on the eventual winners: “I can’t bet against the Swifties,” he wrote in the caption of his Instagram post declaring the bet.

Later, after all was said and done and the 49ers’ defensive coach failed a simple pattern recognition test in overtime, Drake posted his celebration to his Instagram Story, revealing that he and his friends had accidentally broken a plate in their excitement, ruining some “good crepes” in the process. Drake also teased his mans about taking credit for the win, correcting him for saying “we won a million dollars” with a quick, “I won a million dollars.”

This marks the second time Drake has won over a million betting on the Super Bowl; last year, even he couldn’t believe his bet on Kansas City Chiefs, calling it “psychotic.” Maybe the curse only applies to non-Super Bowl sporting events — or Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes are simply immune.

Drake is $1.2 million richer. Hitting Instagram, The Boy revealed he placed $1,150,000 on the Kansas City Chiefs to win the Super Bowl.

“I can’t bet against the swifties @stake,” Drake wrote.

That bet was good, bringing him in $2,346,000 in the win. You can see his celebration below.

Drake’s Super Bowl Bet Is In, And The Rapper Was Sure Not To Go ‘Against The Swifties’

Super Bowl LVIII, better known as Usher Bowl, is tonight, and pople online are rushing to get their final setlist predictions for the highly-anticipated Halftime Show. Of course, that isn’t the only thing folks are fiercely debating. Sports fans are putting up big bucks on their favorite team, with the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs ready to collide in Las Vegas. One of those folks digging deep into their pockets is Drake.

On Saturday, February 10, the “You Broke My Heart” rapper shared his seven-figure bet on the game inspired by Taylor Swift. “I can’t bet against the Swifties,” he wrote.

In the screenshot totaling over $1 million, Drake waved the ally flag to Swift’s avid fanbase. As most (sometimes pissed-off) football fans know, Swift is currently dating the Chiefs’ Travis Kelce. To ensure no beef arises from the two musicians’ supporter circles, Drake decided to go all in on the safe bet.

However, Chiefs fans might want to perform their pre-game rituals a few times before the coin toss. The Drake Curse has taken out franchises across sports, including soccer, basketball, UFC, boxing, and more. Given that Super Bowl LVIII is being held in Las Vegas, who knows? Maybe the odds will be in the Chiefs’ favor. The team has two foes: the Drake Curse and the 49ers.

Nashville Drake Fan Leaves Show $100K Richer After Finishing Chemotherapy: Video

Drake and 21 Savage kept us on our toes through the autumn of 2023 on their It’s All a Blur tour. After wrapping that, the 6ix God announced his plans to take a brief hiatus from a busy few years of music, instead pouring energy into his physical and mental wellbeing. Unsurprisingly, those plans ultimately changed as he and J. Cole scheduled a run of performances this winter following the success of their “First Person Shooter” collaboration. So far things have been off to a strong start, and Drake even seems to be in the giving spirit long past the holiday season.

As you may recall, his last stint on the road saw the Toronto native handing out all kinds of prizes to concert patrons. At one performance, Drizzy was sure to reward an audience member who brought in a sign to brag about the hours she put in giving Brazillian waxes in order to afford her ticket. This time around, the Scorpion rapper is keeping things slightly more PG, instead giving back to a fan in Nashville who recently wrapped up one of the most traumatizing experiences of her life.

LadBible reports that Champagne Papi was on stage this past Wednesday (February 7) when he briefly paused his concert to shout out a 33-year-old woman named Lauren Schwallier. That same day, she spent five hours at Vanderbilt University Medical Centre, undergoing bone at CT scans. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2022 and recently completed chemo before getting to see Drake live. After performing “God’s Plan” he took notice of her sign in the crowd with the exciting news. “I hope my manager doesn’t kill me ’cause I’ve never really done this much, but, listen, I want you to cash this in at the end of the night,” he declared. “We’re gonna give you $100,000.”

As with most things the father of one does, some of his recent tour outfits have been bringing in criticism from internet trolls. At this point in his career, haters rarely phase Drake, though he did take a moment to comment on this situation as only he can. Read what the Canadian had to say at the link below, and check back later for more hip-hop/pop culture news updates.

Drake Offered A Pretty Solid Explanation As To Why He’s Been Wearing A Skeleton Costume On Stage

Drake has been making headlines this week — in more ways than one. The rapper is currently on the It’s All A Blur — Big As The What Tour with J. Cole, and some of his onstage outfits have already garnered much buzz. During one of the nights, Drake has worn a skeleton costume, with a large visible spine.

Of course, Drake has gotten clowned for the costume. However, he explained to a crowd at one of the shows why he chose to wear that costume. And his reasoning is pretty solid.

“I wore the spine because most of these guys that I look in the eyes are spineless as f*ck,” he said.

He continued, saying, “We made that sh*t out of the skeletons you got in your closet so be careful who you talking to.”

It’s not clear who “these guys” are, but this particular message was met with cheers from the audience.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Lil Durk would be joining Drake and J. Cole on the It’s All A Blur — Big As The What Tour for select dates. Durk has previously collaborated with Cole on “All My Life” and Drake on “Laugh Now, Cry Later.”

Drake Seemingly Had An NSFW Video Leak On Twitter/X And Women Are Now Vying To Be His Certified Lover Girl

Leaks have long plagued the music industry but Drake is currently dealing with a leak of a different kind: That of an NSFW video. In the video, someone who appears very much to be the ultra-famous rap star can be seen sitting in bed, filming with his phone in a mirror, and showing off his um….. other talents.

While it’s possible that the person in the video is NOT Drake — after all, he’s had his share of impersonators, and a general look that is often imitated — fans on Twitter are having a field day with the visual, bringing out mixed reactions from extreme thirst to over-the-top disgust.

You’ve got to admit: The timing is a little too convenient, either way. Drake had recently come under fire in the wake of Megan Thee Stallion’s all-out assault on “Hiss.” The song, which takes several of her male detractors to task for their dismissive actions after she was shot by Tory Lanez, takes special issue with his “Circo Loco” lyrics that used her trauma for a punchline. Just saying, if he needed a distraction, he got one.

Drake himself has yet to respond to the video — and there’s still no word on where it actually came from — but you can probably bet he’ll try to take it in stride.
