Childish Gambino’s New Album Arrives “Soon”

It’s been some time since fans have heard a full-length project from Childish Gambino, AKA Donald Glover. Based on his recent interview with TMZ, however, the wait shouldn’t be much longer. The outlet caught up with the artist as he made his way to his car from the Greenwich Hotel in New York today, and asked him what he has coming up. He took the opportunity to reveal that he has a new album in the works, though he didn’t unveil many more details of what supporters can expect.

As for when the project will arrive, the hitmaker simply said “soon.” While he’s yet to confirm an official release date, it’s safe to say that listeners can’t wait. His last full-length project, 3.15.20, dropped in March of 2020. Since then, he’s offered fans EPs for his shows Atlanta and Swarm, and more.

Childish Gambino’s New Project Is In The Works

The news is certainly exciting, but doesn’t come as a total surprise, as Glover confirmed in an interview this year that he doesn’t plan on retiring his musical alter ego any time soon. “I feel like it’ll be clear sooner rather than later,” he told Complex. “It’d be better for people to just tune in, I suppose. But I’m trying harder to not be cryptic. Tyler [The Creator] is always, like, ‘You’re so cryptic.’ But I’m like, ‘I’m really not.’ I just like suspense, I guess. I think it makes stuff better. But that’s just me.”

“I don’t think I’d ever stop, because of like… I always liked it because I liked it. I never did it because it was like, man, this is a good way to get put on or something. I like the feeling of it. A new post is going viral online after the woman who appears on the cover of Childish Gambino‘s Awaken, My Love album claimed that she and her team never received the residuals they were promised. Here’s what to know about who she is, and the situation that reportedly happened.

Who Is On Childish Gambino’s Awaken, My Love Album Cover?

The model who appears on the album cover is Giannina Otero, who reportedly recently made a Facebook post about Gambino’s handling of the situation.

“We received low pay but were promised residuals but never received anything,” she said. “The only person who received residuals was a white woman who created the headpiece even though she was not on set to work on this (but she also deserves it).”

“After years of lies and silence then finding out statute of limitation complications… it’s been an exhausting, emotional, and overall sad thing to deal with,” Otero added. “So it took so much from me especially the fact that we all worked on it with so much love and being proud to represent black artists. All of my lawyers’ communications have been ignored by the artist and his team.”

The post also included a photo of Otero posing with a copy of the record. She made note that while she is proud of being on the cover, she also had a lot of complicated feelings and trouble celebrating the album.

Childish Gambino Accused Of Not Paying “Awaken, My Love!” Cover’s Team

Giannina Antonette Oteto may be an unknown name to you, but you have definitely seen her before. Moreover, she graces the cover art of Childish Gambino, also known as Donald Glover’s, “Awaken, My Love!” album cover from back in 2016. Creative director Ibra Ake took the picture of Oteto wearing a beaded headdress by WXYZ Jewelry designer Laura Wass. However, for years, Oteto has accused the multi-disciplinary artist and his team of avoiding legal contact to actually receive payment for her contribution to the project, and that she’s not alone in this fight. Recently, she took to Facebook to update followers on the matter and comment on the bittersweet emotions she holds for this work.

“Being able to hold an album that I’m on the cover of,” Giannina Oteto captioned a (seemingly since-deleted) picture of her holding a vinyl pressing of Childish Gambino’s album. “And having my bestie mom next to me to celebrate! My number 1 cheerleader! This album has been so hard for me to celebrate for many reasons, and for years I resented it even. It put me through a lot but finally being able to celebrate it means a lot! Update: I resented it because myself, the makeup artist, and stylist (all black women) were [taken] advantage of and lied to.

“Community” Stars: Where Are They Now?

Since the series first aired on NBC in 2009, Community has become one of the most beloved shows in sitcom history. Armed with a loyal fanbase who followed the series from cancellation to revival, to a late-game streaming pivot, to another, more permanent cancellation, Community has maintained cultural relevancy in recent years by moving their entire library to Netflix.

Series creator Dan Harmon has been diligently reassembling the team for the upcoming Community movie, scheduled to stream on Peacock. Of course, since the series aired its final episode in 2015, each of the core seven actors who comprised Greendale Community College’s illustrious study group have moved on to other projects.

Joel McHale

Joel McHale led Community‘s ensemble cast as Jeff Winger, the slick-talking conman attending Greendale to regain his status as a lawyer after being outed as a fraud. Since Community aired its final episode, McHale has starred in his own Netflix series The Joel McHale Show With Joel McHale, as well as the Netflix original film A Futile And Stupid Gesture. In the latter, he portrayed his Community co-star Chevy Chase. Though McHale has appeared in a handful of other network shows, including CBS’s The Great Indoors and Fox’s Animal Control, none have seen as much success and cult-like admiration as Community.

Alison Brie

Since Alison Brie concluded her stint as Community‘s studious do-gooder, Annie Eddison, she has gone on to lead a number of other television shows, including Mad Men, Bojack Horseman, and Glow. Alison Brie has also starred in several feature films, including romantic comedies like Sleeping with Other People, Somebody I Used To Know and Spin Me Round. Brie also appears in psychological thrillers like Horse Girl and Promising Young Woman, and even an action-adventure film alongside John Cena titled Freelance.

Danny Pudi

Community served as something of a big break for Danny Pudi, putting his incredible talent on display for the masses in the role of Abed Nadir. In the time since the show concluded, Pudi has lent his voice to animated works. Some of his credits include Duck Tales, Smurfs: The Lost Village, Harvey Girls Forever, Transformers: Earthspark, and Strange Planet. Pudi also reunited with Community writer Megan Ganz in the Rob McElhenney-created series Mythic Quest.

Gillian Jacobs

After moving on from her role as well-intentioned but perpetually air-headed Britta Perry, Gillian Jacobs has appeared in a wide array of other projects. Her post-Community credits include Don’t Think Twice, Lemon, Winning Time: The Rise of the Laker’s Dynasty, Invincible, and the Judd Apatow-created Netflix series Love. Like many of her Community co-stars, Jacobs’ also appeared in a cameo voice role in Rick and Morty. Jacobs’ Rick and Morty character, Supernova, led a web-based spin-off series of the adult cartoon called The Vindicators.

Yvette Nicole Brown

Since her final hour as Shirley, the god-fearing family woman on Community, Yvette Nicole Brown has stacked up many credits. Beside small cameo appearances in Avengers: Endgame and DC League of Super-Pets, Nicole Brown has also frequented series such as Talking Dead and Hollywood Game Night. The Drake and Josh alumni also secured an Emmy nomination in 2021 for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. She received a nomination for her recurring role as Judge Harper in A Black Lady Sketch Show.

Chevy Chase

Unlike his co-stars, Chevy Chase was a certified A-lister long before he starred as Pierce Hawthorne in Community. With a career which spans over 5 decades, Chase’s credits have been few and far between since the sitcom went off the air. Chase went on to star in projects including Hot Tub Time Machine 2, The Last Laugh, and Panda Vs. Aliens. Chevy Chase also courted controversy during his tenure on Community, prompting many of the cast and crew to refuse to work with him again. The show killed off Chase’s character in its fifth season, suggesting he probably won’t make a return for the upcoming Community film.

Donald Glover

In the years following Donald Glover’s tenure as Troy Barnes on Community, the multi-hyphenate star has truly hit his creative stride. Though Glover was hailed as one of the best performers on the show, his post-Community career is arguably more prolific than any of his co-stars combined. Glover performed stand-up comedy for Comedy Central, created and starred in the hit FX series Atlanta, and launched a multi-platinum music career under the alias Childish Gambino. Glover has also starred as young Lando Calrissian in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story.

For the upcoming Community movie, Donald Glover was widely regarded as the hardest member of the original cast to bring back due to his busy schedule. Glover previously let it slip in an interview with GQ that he had signed on to appear in the film, though the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have caused massive scheduling changes, calling his participation into question.

“Mr. & Mrs. Smith” Trailer Sees Donald Glover & Maya Erksine Bring New Meaning To A “Work Marriage”

The first trailer for the Amazon Prime remake of Mr. & Mrs. Smith has dropped, showcasing Donald Glover (Atlanta) and Maya Erskine (PEN15) in the titular roles. The trailer doesn’t reveal a lot about the show. However, it perfectly contrasts the pair’s loveless marriage with the high-octane nature of their work. The supporting cast includes everyone from Parker Posey to Paul Dano to Alexander Skarsgård.

However, the project, comprised of eight episodes, changes a lot from the 2005 film it is inspired by. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie played a wealthy couple whose failing marriage is revitalized by the fact that they learn they are assassins for rival companies tasked with killing each other. Glover and Erskine are instead spies who are married as part of their long-term cover. As such, their entire marriage is a shame and the trailer goes to great lengths to show just how painfully loveless their partnership is. The show is set to debut on February 2.

Who Is Starring In Mr. & Mrs. Smith?

Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are set to play the titular married couple. Glover, also known by his musical handle Childish Gambino, has built himself a stellar acting resume. Donald Glover has faced recent rumors that his time in music as Childish Gambino is over. Over the past few years, Glover has focused more on television, with his work on shows like Atlanta and Swarm.

In 2017, he had also said that he would retire his stage name after his next album. The record then dropped in 2020, and he changed his mind.

Because of this, fans have stuff on the way to still look forward to — as he discussed his future as Gambino in a new interview with Complex.

“I feel like it’ll be clear sooner rather than later,” Glover shared. “It’d be better for people to just tune in, I suppose. But I’m trying harder to not be cryptic.
