T.I. Receives Atlanta Award For Community Efforts & Philanthropy

T.I. just received the city of Atlanta’s “highest honor” for his community-based, philanthropic, and humanitarian endeavors: the Phoenix Award. Moreover, he celebrated alongside Mayor Andre Dickens, former Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, Senator Raphael Warnock, and Phillana Williams, who presented this to him onstage. This was on Friday (December 29), and followed the trap pioneer’s second show at the Atlanta Symphony Hall to commemorate Trap Muzik‘s 20-year anniversary. In addition to his extracurricular work, this award also points to his indelible musical contributions and what he represents for the city and the culture. In a statement to HipHopDX, Tip expressed gratitude for this achievement and called to his roots and main motivators in his career.

“Humbly honored for us to have received this highest honor by Mayor Andre Dickens and the City of Atlanta,” T.I. expressed. “Dis is for Trap Muzik, 20 years later. Happy to have shared this illustrious moment wit my wife and the rest of my family, along wit da people in da City.” While the Harris family is dealing with some legal trouble and sexual assault accusations at press time, it’s heartening to see they were able to bask in this occasion and enjoy it.

Furthermore, this accolade arrives just as T.I.’s kids are forming their own career paths and following in his magnanimous footsteps. For example, his daughter Heiress recently had her radio debut, which he was of course very proud of and ecstatic to shout out and praise. In fact, the father-daughter duo recently performed one of his hits, “Live Your Life,” which was a nice full-circle moment to witness amid a creative surge. Hopefully there’s more to come in that regard down the road, because it’s always very interesting for us as fans to see these peeks into their dynamics through their art and expression.

Meanwhile, that bond isn’t perfect, but neither is any family unit’s, especially one so overtaken by media coverage and social media scrutiny. All we know for sure is that the 43-year-old should be lauded for his work, a journey that’s far from over yet. We’re sure that 2024 will hold more great things and hopefully some clarifying accountability when it comes to his and Tiny’s accusations. “Community” Stars: Where Are They Now?

Since the series first aired on NBC in 2009, Community has become one of the most beloved shows in sitcom history. Armed with a loyal fanbase who followed the series from cancellation to revival, to a late-game streaming pivot, to another, more permanent cancellation, Community has maintained cultural relevancy in recent years by moving their entire library to Netflix.

Series creator Dan Harmon has been diligently reassembling the team for the upcoming Community movie, scheduled to stream on Peacock. Of course, since the series aired its final episode in 2015, each of the core seven actors who comprised Greendale Community College’s illustrious study group have moved on to other projects.

Joel McHale led Community‘s ensemble cast as Jeff Winger, the slick-talking conman attending Greendale to regain his status as a lawyer after being outed as a fraud. Since Community aired its final episode, McHale has starred in his own Netflix series The Joel McHale Show With Joel McHale, as well as the Netflix original film A Futile And Stupid Gesture. In the latter, he portrayed his Community co-star Chevy Chase. Though McHale has appeared in a handful of other network shows, including CBS’s The Great Indoors and Fox’s Animal Control, none have seen as much success and cult-like admiration as Community.

Since Alison Brie concluded her stint as Community‘s studious do-gooder, Annie Eddison, she has gone on to lead a number of other television shows, including Mad Men, Bojack Horseman, and Glow. Alison Brie has also starred in several feature films, including romantic comedies like Sleeping with Other People, Somebody I Used To Know and Spin Me Round. Brie also appears in psychological thrillers like Horse Girl and Promising Young Woman, and even an action-adventure film alongside John Cena titled Freelance.

Community served as something of a big break for Danny Pudi, putting his incredible talent on display for the masses in the role of Abed Nadir. In the time since the show concluded, Pudi has lent his voice to animated works. Some of his credits include Duck Tales, Smurfs: The Lost Village, Harvey Girls Forever, Transformers: Earthspark, and Strange Planet. Pudi also reunited with Community writer Megan Ganz in the Rob McElhenney-created series Mythic Quest.

After moving on from her role as well-intentioned but perpetually air-headed Britta Perry, Gillian Jacobs has appeared in a wide array of other projects. Her post-Community credits include Don’t Think Twice, Lemon, Winning Time: The Rise of the Laker’s Dynasty, Invincible, and the Judd Apatow-created Netflix series Love. Like many of her Community co-stars, Jacobs’ also appeared in a cameo voice role in Rick and Morty. Jacobs’ Rick and Morty character, Supernova, led a web-based spin-off series of the adult cartoon called The Vindicators.

Since her final hour as Shirley, the god-fearing family woman on Community, Yvette Nicole Brown has stacked up many credits. Beside small cameo appearances in Avengers: Endgame and DC League of Super-Pets, Nicole Brown has also frequented series such as Talking Dead and Hollywood Game Night. The Drake and Josh alumni also secured an Emmy nomination in 2021 for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. She received a nomination for her recurring role as Judge Harper in A Black Lady Sketch Show.

Unlike his co-stars, Chevy Chase was a certified A-lister long before he starred as Pierce Hawthorne in Community. With a career which spans over 5 decades, Chase’s credits have been few and far between since the sitcom went off the air. Chase went on to star in projects including Hot Tub Time Machine 2, The Last Laugh, and Panda Vs. Aliens. Chevy Chase also courted controversy during his tenure on Community, prompting many of the cast and crew to refuse to work with him again. The show killed off Chase’s character in its fifth season, suggesting he probably won’t make a return for the upcoming Community film.

Donald Glover

In the years following Donald Glover’s tenure as Troy Barnes on Community, the multi-hyphenate star has truly hit his creative stride. Though Glover was hailed as one of the best performers on the show, his post-Community career is arguably more prolific than any of his co-stars combined. Glover performed stand-up comedy for Comedy Central, created and starred in the hit FX series Atlanta, and launched a multi-platinum music career under the alias Childish Gambino. Glover has also starred as young Lando Calrissian in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story.

For the upcoming Community movie, Donald Glover was widely regarded as the hardest member of the original cast to bring back due to his busy schedule. Glover previously let it slip in an interview with GQ that he had signed on to appear in the film, though the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have caused massive scheduling changes, calling his participation into question.

Donald Glover To Join “Community” Movie, Joel McHale Confirms

Donald Glover will officially be joining the cast for the upcoming Community spin-off film. Star Joel McHale made the announcement while appearing on Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, according to EW. Other cast members include Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Ken Jeong, and Jim Rash.

“The fact that Donald’s gonna do it, that was the big piece,” McHale told Ripa. “But I think everyone’s coming back. I mean, so far we’re pretty good. And I think that will happen. If not then, you know, Donald will be there. See, it’ll just be Donald. It’ll just be an episode of Atlanta.”

McHale then clarified that Chevy Chase won’t be returning. “Yeah, I don’t think so,” McHale said, before joking, “There wasn’t any issues at all when we were making the show.” When the cast reunited for a virtual table read back in 2020, Pedro Pascal read for a guest-starring role originally played by Walton Goggins. McHale noted that they’d love to have either return for the film. “Hopefully Walton and Pedro would come back on, but Pedro seems to be the most famous person now on the planet, so I don’t know,” he said.

He added that he expects the movie to begin filming next summer. Despite McHale’s comments, Peacock still hasn’t announced Glover’s involvement in the film. While cast members expressed hope about him being able to join in the past, he wasn’t included in the official cast when Peacock announced the movie, last year.

Be on the lookout for an official announcement of Glover joining the cast from Peacock. Until then, expect filming on the Community film to begin, next summer.

Boosie Badazz Is Building A Neighborhood In His Backyard

Rapper Boosie Badazz is reportedly in the process of creating an entire community in his backyard for his family and friends to enjoy. According to a video circulating the internet revealing Boosie’s progress, the neighborhood will feature luxury apartments and streets named after his children. The video also claims that the neighborhood will also feature “a massive pool,” a basketball court, a movie theater, a tennis court, and more.

No Jumper shared the video to their Instagram, and viewers were quick to comment. One user writes, “Finally someone doing something interesting and profitable with their money.” Another adds, “That’s what’s up! I’m doing the same thing here in Detroit. We need more of this.” Not everyone is a fan of Boosie’s big plans, however, with one commenter claiming, “This is one of the worst ideas since the ‘big ass chain’ but at least this should have some resale value assuming it ever gets finished.”

Boosie Invests In His Family

In other Boosie news, the rapper recently shared his feelings on Twitter about the highly-anticipated Devin Haney vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko boxing match. He Tweeted, “I F**K WITH HANEY BUT I JUST WATCH CHAMP LOSE EVERY ROUND OF THAT FIGHT NO BOXING RIGGED TIMES HAVE CHANGED THIS S**T BOUT MONEY.” “I won money on Haney but Money can’t make me Lie,” he added alongside a prayer emoji. A clip of the rapper going on a jelly-related tangent on Instagram Live also took off earlier this week. Boosie was pulling through a McDonald’s drive-through in front of viewers, when he realized that he hadn’t received as many jelly packets as he would’ve preferred. He proceeded to go off about how “stingy” the McDonald’s employees act “with fu***in jelly.”

Earlier this month, Boosie also sat down with VladTV, where he revealed that he believes Tory Lanez should have taken a plea deal in the Megan Thee Stallion shooting case. He discussed his own experience and said, “If he would have went in there and said he wanted to make a deal, [with] them lawyers he got, he could have been doing time in a facility with damn-near nobody around him.” Boosie added that he, personally, “would have tried to get five years.”

In Nov. 2022, the Brooklyn-born rapper sponsored a Thanksgiving event at Children of Promise in Brooklyn, New York. Children of Promise’s mission is “to partner with children and families impacted by mass incarceration to dismantle the stigma and heal from the trauma plaguing Black and Brown communities.”

The event, which had fellow rapper Jay Critch in attendance, included activities and giveaways for the children of the program. Casanova sent in a video message for the attendees. “Children of Promise we giving back. We don’t stop giving back behind bars. You know what it is.”

In May 2022,  Casanova pleaded guilty to numerous crimes in his Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) case.

Injured passengers identified in crash that killed UGA football player and staffer

Early Sunday, University of Georgia football player Devin Willock and staff member Chandler LeCroy were killed in a single car crash. The UGA Athletic Association reported that the accident came just hours after their team celebrated its national championship  with a victory parade and celebration. The turn of events from celebration and joy for the Bulldogs’ second national championship quickly turned to mourning over the sudden loss of two young community members.

Shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday, LeCroy, 24, was driving with Willock, 20, and two other passengers near the UGA campus in Athens when the vehicle went off the road. The four passengers in the vehicle whirled into two power poles and several trees, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department said in a news release.

The crash occurred just beyond a curved section of Barnett Shoals Road. The speed limit is 40 mph and there is a sidewalk, but no barrier on the outer edge of the road.

Willock was ejected from the vehicle and died on the scene. LeCroy died after being taken to a hospital, police said. None of the other passengers were ejected,” according to police Lt. Shaun Barnett.

Willock was a redshirt sophomore from New Milford, New Jersey who joined the team as a freshman in 2020. He played on the offensive line in all 15 of the team’s games this past season. LeCroy’s LinkedIn provides that she  was a football recruiting analyst for UGA.

The two passengers that were injured in the crash were identified as Georgia offensive lineman Warren McClendon, 21, who received minor injuries, and Victoria Bowles, 26, who had serious injuries, according to police.

McClendon who started at right tackle for Georgia this season, declared for the NFL draft earlier Saturday.  His father, Warren McClendon Sr., told the Athens Banner-Herald he needed stitches on his forehead but is “doing well.”

Willock’s aunt and uncle, Cicely and Normal Stout, said their nephew was well liked and doing well in school. “He was doing very well. He was very loved by all his peers and all the teachers and all the coaches,” Cicely Stout said.

“Devin is always smiling, no matter what. Devin has a smile on his face and he was doing very well in academics. He was doing very good. He was good, very good student, very good person.” Willock’s older brother, Jonathan Wheatley, died in 2009 at the age of 20 from injuries sustained in a similar car crash, Cicely Stout said.

Photos of the crash site taken by nearby residents capture  a wooden power pole snapped in half and the car’s frame crumpled against an apartment building in Shoals Creek, about two miles from UGA’s campus.

Resident, Jonathan D’Souza, said he was the first person to respond to the scene of the crash. He told CNN he was watching television when he felt the ground shake and heard what sounded like gunshots outside his apartment. As he went outside to investigate, it was pitch black because the power had gone out. Sparks flying from dangling power lines in the middle of the street alerted him to the mangled car smashed into his neighbor’s house, he said.

D’Souza found Willock lying face down next to the vehicle. He began screaming at an unresponsive Willock asking if he was okay. “It was the most helpless feeling because you wish you could save him, but you know he’s already gone,” D’Souza said.

Police said, the investigation into the crash is ongoing and they give their support to the families. The two UGA team members were remembered by university members as lively and valued additions to the football program.

“Devin was an outstanding young man in every way. He was always smiling, was a great teammate and a joy to coach,” head football coach Kirby Smart said in a statement Sunday. “Chandler was a valuable member of our football staff and brought an incredible attitude and energy every single day.”

“These two special people meant the world to our football program and athletic department,” UGA athletics director Josh Brooks said in a statement. “We are working with our medical staff and mental health and performance team to ensure our staff and student-athletes have all the support they need during this extremely difficult time.”

Daniel Dewitt, a local UGA fan, told CNN that Willock was “upbeat and happy.” Dewitt he has a 2021 UGA championship tattoo and plans to get a matching one for this season’s victory. This time, he said, it will feature Willock’s number, 77.

The Founders Of A$AP Foundation Talk Battling Fentanyl On The Frontlines

Steven “A$AP Yams” Rodriguez was a powerful element in the rise of the A$AP Mob. His music helped usher in a new wave of East Coast rap that took the planet by storm. To get a sense of his lasting impact at the time of this article, his single “Yamborghini High feat Juicy J” currently has more than 141 million views on YouTube. But in the middle of the truly meteoric rise of the A$AP Mob, tragedy struck. A$AP Yams died suddenly on January 18, 2015, after an accidental fentanyl overdose. The hip-hop world was shaken to its core at the death of this 26-year-old rising star. Yam’s death was part of a growing trend inside the entertainment world and mainstream America, where fentanyl overdoses were fast on the rise.

Taking a broader view, fentanyl overdoses have spiked in the country at an alarming rate over the past decade. Musicians, college kids, and even cops are not safe from the rapid death toll the drug has claimed across all American demographics. According to the DEA website, as little as 2 milligrams can kill you. The death rate increases when those small amounts are mixed with other drugs. Rolling Stone recently did a feature on how many celebrities — Prince, Tom Petty, Lil Peep, etc. — have fallen victim to having very small doses of fentanyl laced with other drugs. Two students at Ohio State University just died after an accidental overdose from buying fake Adderall pills. San Jose State University football star turned Police Officer, Dejon Packer recently died in his home from “fentanyl toxicity.”

No one is safe from this drug. Full stop.

In response to the devasting toll caused by fentanyl, A$AP Yams’ mother, Tatianna Paulino founded the Always Strive and Prosper Foundation (It follows the A$AP moniker, the acronym created by Yams). Darryl Phillips joined her in actualizing her vision. Serving as Executive Director in the non-profit they spread awareness to the streets on how to avoid the deadly impact of drugs, focusing on fentanyl. We spoke with Tatiana and Darryl about Yams’ music, A$AP Yams Day, and their mission to heal the hood.

***

Can you tell me why the Always Strive And Prosper Foundation was created and what your goals are with it for young people?

Darryl Phillips: The foundation was created really as a a commemorative, but also a meaningful mission brought together by Tatiana Paulino, A$AP Yams, mom. She wanted to be able to help one family or, you know, an individual person, whoever. If we could kind of help in any way to not experience some of the mourning that she was going through. It kind of started as something that we just were talking about. Then we got together in a community room up in Riverdale, in the Bronx and just started discussing what we saw as issues.

From there we tried to figure out we could deal with substance abuse.. But really it was just about this woman here [Yam’s mom] wanting to be able to help other families and other people to not go through the same pain.

Sometimes when a rapper dies, in the expansion of public awareness, the humanity of the individual can be lost. Can you tell us who he was to you before the rest of the world got to know him?

Tatianna Paulino: Well, I don’t even know how to describe that. It’s like, he was my kid. He was my friend. He was my son and he was everything for me before he was A$AP. He was my kid.

He made a lot of jokes. So for me in the house, it was like having a comedian around all of the time. You know, having a great time, having dinner with him. He was hilarious. So I miss all the family time that we had together.

Now, do you remember the day or even the moment you decided you were gonna create a foundation?

Paulino: The same time he passed away. I wanted to do something to help other parents and other families with the problem that I’m going through at the moment. Because it’s really hard. He was helping a lot of people in the music business, we can help another family. I said, “We have to do the foundation. We have to keep his legacy alive.”

ASAP Yams and Tati
ASAP Yams Foundation

Do either of you have advice for parents who may be concerned about their kids abusing drugs or being exposed to these environments? What is your advice to them?

Phillips: I think the advice is to try and have a conversation [with your kids]. To always be able to instill something about truth with your children, with your kids, your brothers, your family members. Speak to each other in a way that involves care and some kind of trust.

I had a conversation at a friend’s house once and you know, we’re talking about drug use and just how it was impacting community lives. He’s like “Well, you know, my son is not really around friends that are into that.” The son chimed in and said, “No, actually they are.” The dad was shocked.

Then provide extracurricular things. Like “Hey, do you know, what is it that you wanna do? And how can I help you do that with art, basketball, chess- you know? Ask how you can support their personal vision of themselves.

Paulino: I think as parents, we have to be open-minded. Try to get information, to see what’s really going out there. Because sometimes we are behind, because of our age.

Can you talk about A$AP Yams Day? What happens at those events?

Phillips: It was something where we were asking the mob, can we do something? A$AP Rocky was kind of always carrying a flag for that, as well. He wanted to make sure it was something that was really commemorative. It’s a concert that involves not really random artists, but up-and-coming artists.

The first year [Jan 18, 2019] seemed to be the coldest day of the year. It was marking the day that he passed. It was a who’s who of artists. But we also had up and comers take the stage as well.

The Weeknd, Kendrick, Tyler [the Creator], there has been such a host of people that have come to support it. And now we can incubate programs to do little events that we could outside the concert to develop the community. You know, I think every day is A$AP Yams Day.

ASAP Yams Grid
ASAP Yams Foundation

Do you have any messages for the artists that promote, you know, the high drug lifestyle these days? They really do seem to have the ears of the teens and kids.

Phillips: We can’t blame the kids ever. Us being old school, we always understood that even when it was in NWA was a reflection of what we were going through in our community. We were experiencing every day going outside, the injustice that was over us. We had a generation of kids that grew up living with their grandparents. Not even their parents. So I think we have to look at the overall larger picture, which is the drug war. We have to look at the pharmaceutical companies that are really pushing the agenda [of how these drugs are made so available to teenagers]. From Purdue [an international pharmaceutical company responsible for many opioid deaths] and many others.

Follow the money on all that.I can’t blame the artists. We have to try and see what we can do to counter it or to figure out how to abate it in some way.

Tatianna, can you tell me some of the other upcoming events, your organization will be hosting?

Paulino: So we have a back-to-school event usually involving a basketball tournament. We have a show in Harlem and it’s going on in the lower east side. We have a toy and coat drive that we do as well. That’s around the Christmas holidays. It was just really us giving them scarves, brand new toys, and other people coming to donate stuff for the kids. We try and keep these quarterly events alive as well. We are always working to figure out other ways to support other people doing other events also.

Phillips: So Michael K. Williams was a friend of mine. He knew of our organization as well. And when he passed, you know, we were able to contribute. We’d like to do something, I think a little bit outta state. I’m going to talk to some people about A$AP Yams events in LA and on the west coast.

For more information and support on upcoming events, issues with fentanyl, and other addiction issues please contact the Always Strive and Prosper Foundation and on IG @asapfoundation.
