Donald Glover Considers Stand-Up Comedy Return

Donald Glover says he’s considering a return to stand-up comedy following his work on the new show, Mr. & Mrs. Smith. While attending a premiere for the series, he revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he’s spoken with Bill Burr and Chris Rock about the idea.

“I still write jokes down and I think about it,” he said. “I asked Bill Burr where to go, and I had a list, and I was just like, ‘Is it something that I feel like I need to do right now?’ Maybe it’s just a nice thing that’s there that you can try to do again if you want.” He added: “Oh yeah. Thought about it. Chris Rock had said, like, ‘When are you going to do it again? No one gets really good at it until their 40s, except for Eddie [Murphy].”

He also mentioned going to the Comedy Cellar in New York, but noted he hasn’t performed. Glover performed stand-up comedy much more frequently earlier in his career. Back in 2010, he performed a 30-minute set on the program, Comedy Central Presents. Glover also discussed his plans for releasing new music. “I want to, but I sort of feel the same about music as I do about stand-up right now,” he said. He released his last album, 3.15.20, back in 2020.

Donald Glover Reveals He Got Married In Secret During The Filming Of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”

Everybody is talking about Donald Glover’s new series Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The entire series dropped on Prime Video last week to rave reviews from critics and Glover has been making the rounds with a series of interviews to promote the project. In one interview with Complex earlier this week he revealed that he still sees Kanye West as hit GOAT rapper. He explained that despite the controversy none of the contemporary rappers around today would exist without West.

But it was actually an interview with his co-star Maya Erskine where an even bigger story was first tipped off. She said that Glover actually got married during the show, something he was asked about directly in an interview of his own. “Yeah. There was a day where I don’t think we had to be on set until noon or 1, so, I was like, ‘Can we get married today?’ I got married in the morning. We had a real wedding afterwards, too,” he revealed. Fans who have been following Glover for a while know that he’s said in the past that he doesn’t believe in marriage, so he also had to answer questions about what changed his mind.

Glover elaborated on what made him decide to finally get married. “What happened was, well, number one, I didn’t know what I was getting out of it. I felt like I knew what she was getting out of it, and I didn’t feel like she was being honest, necessarily, about what she was getting out of it. I was thinking about it in such a silly way, which I see now. Now I realize, yeah, maybe she’s gaining some stuff, but she’s also losing a lot of stuff,” he continued.

“We eventually had an honest talk and she was like, ‘I’m a traditional woman.’ And when she said that, some part of me was like, ‘And I want to help you be that.’ Whatever she needs me to be, that makes me happy. Donald Glover & “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” Widely Praised

Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the Prime TV remake of the iconic film of the same name, has opened to widespread praise. The show, which stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine in the lead roles, opened to an 87% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The show has been widely praised for deviating from the vibe of the original film and being powered by the very real chemistry between Glover and Erskine. Audiences were a little cooler on the show, giving it a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Overall, the general takeaway is that the eight-episode series “surpasses” the original material in myriad ways.

However, critics have noted that fans of the original should not go into the show expecting the same vibes as the film. The sexiness is still there, it’s just very different. One critic noted that the show is “so bizarre” that audiences will “either love it or hate it”. Despite this, the show is already proving to be a major successful for Amazon’s media production arm. Meanwhile, Glover also recently revealed that Brad Pitt gave him no advice after being cast in the show. Glover told The Tonight Show that the actor “Brad Pitted” his way through their interaction – being very charming but ultimately not saying a whole lot. Pitt also reportedly told Glover he’d “do a great job” but didn’t give anything more concrete than that. It remains to be seen how Pitt feels about the show now that critics have lauded Glover above him.

In the interview, Erskine also revealed that the studio was very keen to “sex it up” throughout the promotion of the show. However, Erskine revealed that this was something she struggled with because her “inner sexual animal” is a “worm”. It’s also an interesting direction, given how the show’s early marketing material portrays the couple as very business-minded and sexless.

He is best known for Atlanta, which he also created. However, he has plenty of comedic experience as well with the likes of Community. He also recently appeared as a live-action cameo in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse while also reprising his Adventure Time voice role for Fionna & Cake. Meanwhile, Erskine has developed a reputation for her deadpan humor in roles like PEN15, Insecure, and Plus One. Filling out the cast is a huge collection of Hollywood heavyweights. Parker Posey, Paul Dano, Alexander Skarsgård, and Sarah Paulson are all set to appear in the show. However, their roles aren’t all that clear. The show debuts on February 2.

The first trailer for the Amazon Prime remake of Mr. & Mrs. Smith has dropped, showcasing Donald Glover (Atlanta) and Maya Erskine (PEN15) in the titular roles. The trailer doesn’t reveal a lot about the show. However, it perfectly contrasts the pair’s loveless marriage with the high-octane nature of their work. The supporting cast includes everyone from Parker Posey to Paul Dano to Alexander Skarsgård.

However, the project, comprised of eight episodes, changes a lot from the 2005 film it is inspired by.
