Donald Glover is looking to hire talent for his studio, Gilga. The Swarm and Atlanta creator revealed the job listings on Twitter, Sunday. “My creative studio GILGA is looking for people,” Glover wrote in the post.

Gilga’s next project is expected to be a short film directed by Malia Obama. While it will be her directorial debut, former president Barack Obama’s daughter previously earned a writing credit on Swarm. Of working with Malia, Glover recently told GQ: “The first thing we did was talk about the fact that she will only get to do this once. You’re Obama’s daughter. So if you make a bad film, it will follow you around.” Glover didn’t reveal any further details about the project.

He also discussed Gilga as a whole with the outlet. Glover explained that he wants to fund projects that he believes in and will match the quality of that produced by “rich kids.” “Rich kids don’t do shit for money. They do things based on if it’s gonna make them happy. Like, that’s really what I realized this last go-around. I made a lot of money, and it wasn’t that I was depressed or anything like that, but I realized it’s the people I was around that mattered,” he said. “People don’t get quality anymore and they need a filter. Gilga is a perfect filter for that shit.” Glover also vented his frustration with artists like Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino receiving funding for projects that are good, but not always profitable. He wants more artists to be given that opportunity.

Donald Glover & The Clermont Twins Wear MSCHF’s New Backwards Sneaker

Big Red Boot season may be over but fear not sneakerheads, MSCHF has another wild design that’s sure to be seen everywhere this summer. The BWD Shoe is a multi-colour sneaker that offers owners two ways to slide their foot inside – one of which obviously resembles a backwards model. Photos of the product surfaced online late last month, and now, some of our favourite stars have been seen wearing them out and about. Among them is Donald Glover, who stepped out for the Brooklyn Nets vs. Orlando Magic game on Friday (April 7) in his fresh kicks.

While his footwear certainly stood out for its abnormal nature, the rest of the Swarm creators outfit allowed him to (mostly) blend in with the crowd. Glover donned a white tee with a QR code printed on it, a Hawaii cap, and classic blue jeans. He also carried a tan leather jacket with him, later draped over his leg while watching the NBA players tear up the court. The multi-talent’s public appearance in the MSCHF shoes comes just days before their quickly approaching official release on April 11.

Childish Gambino Sports MSCHF’s New Shoe

Others who got their hands on a pair of the BWD Shoe early include the Clermont Twins, who showed theirs off in their usual thirst-trappy fashion on Instagram. “BADDIES COME IN TWOS👯‍♀️,” the sisters wrote in their caption, almost perfectly mimicking the twin emoji with their stance. Aside from the MSCHF sneakers, both Shannon and Shannade wore pink and white crew socks to their mid-calves, as well as tiny black lingerie sets, which markedly exposed their underboob. Finally, they completed their look with large cross chains covering their chests.

Over the next few days, it’s entirely likely we’ll see more stars sporting the BWD model, similar to the rollout that came along with the Big Red Boots earlier this year. Keep scrolling for more photos and videos of celebrities sporting MSCHF’s new design. Will you be purchasing a pair for yourself? Donald Glover Says Tina Fey Confirmed He Was a “Diversity” Hire For “30 Rock”

Donald Glover says that Tina Fey once revealed to him that he was originally a diversity hire at 30 Rock. The Atlanta creator reflected on his time in the writers’ room for the NBC show during a new interview with GQ. He says that he holds no grudges against Fey for letting him know about it either.

“There is no animosity between us or anything like that, but [Tina Fey] said it herself…. It was a diversity thing,” Glover said. He then explained that the hiring process was narrowed down to him and Kenya Barris. “The last two people who were fighting for the job were me and Kenya Barris. I didn’t know it was between me and him until later. He hit me one day and he was like, ‘I hated you for years!’” Barris went on to create the sitcom, Black-ish.

In the end, Glover says he’s happy with how everything played out because it’s led him to where he is now. “I dodged so many bullets,” Glover remarked. “Me being on SNL would’ve killed me. I got friends who made it on SNL and, at the time, I was like, damn. But if I got on SNL, my career wouldn’t have happened. And thank God. Thank God I didn’t get some of those pilots. I wanted so desperately to be on Parks and Rec because it was the cool, hipster show. I am the bullet dodger, I feel like Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction. That wasn’t a mistake, you know? God did that.”

Despite his success, Glover also discussed the negative responses to season 3 of Atlanta, admitting that he cried as a result. Elsewhere in the interview, Glover spoke about the early stages of his music career, including a time he was booed while opening for Kid Cudi, and much more. Donald Glover Admits He Cried Over Backlash To “Atlanta” Season 3

Donald Glover says that he cried in response to the backlash over season 3 of his hit FX series, Atlanta. Reflecting on the season during a new interview with GQ, Glover explained that he still feels people will view the episodes in a positive light in retrospect. Glover explained that fans “deserve something that isn’t easy for everyone to digest all the time.”

He continued: “I knew season three wasn’t easy. We all knew it wasn’t easy. We knew opening the season without [any of the cast] was going to make people fucking mad and be like, ‘What the fuck?’ It felt like…you’re climbing and you’re climbing to get to the top where the light is. And when you get there, you can do whatever dance you want. And that’s what everybody’s fighting for.”

“I think with me specifically, people never give me the benefit of the doubt,” he said. “And I needed to see for me. This has nothing to do with the art, because I made sure that the art was good. But it really was a personal exploration just for me. No one else knows this, but I was like, Did I make it? Did I make it to the Kanye and the Quentin Tarantino and the Scorsese level? I do think people will go back and be like, This season is good. I wasn’t ever worried about that.”

From there, Glover compared himself to Wes Anderson, who he says “never makes money,” but still receives funding for unusual projects. “Like with Wes Anderson, there’s different rules. This n***a never makes money. It’s not about the money. It’s because a certain group of people are like, ‘This is important.’ And I was like, ‘Are Black people at a point now where they can do that on their own?’”

He elaborated by referencing Prince’s Sign o’ the Times: “It made me very sad. I cried. I did. Not like, ‘You guys, this is really good.’ [Laughs.] It’s like what Prince said when U2 won best album. He was like, If y’all wanted me to make that album, I could have. U2 couldn’t make Sign o’ the Times. But I know the character I am in culture and in Black culture—and that it doesn’t feel good coming from me. And also like, I don’t feel good saying shit like that. I’d much rather lay on the empathy.”

Donald Glover Says Chris Rock Convinced Him To Get Back To Stand-Up Comedy

As a multihyphenate entertainer, Donald Glover’s reach surpasses many of his peers. The rapper, singer, actor, and filmmaker has his hands in all facets of the industry. His work as Childish Gambino remains praiseworthy—and in the same breath, fans can enjoy his comedies, including Community, as well as his more controversial works, like Atlanta. Glover is known for his roles that highlight comedic value, and in a recent GQ feature, he revealed the advice he received from a standup legend.

“So I was with Chris Rock, and he was like, ‘People aren’t good [at stand-up] until they’re your age,’” Glover recalled. Rock apparently added, “‘The only one who was better when he was younger was Eddie [Murphy]. Why aren’t you doing this sh*t?’” Stay tuned because Glover took the words to heart. He’s begun writing jokes and is said to be giving it another go. What that looks like in the future is unclear, but seeing Glover return to the stand-up stage will be interesting.

Donald Glover Looks To Make Magic With Malia Obama

Additionally, Glover’s Swarm has become the talk of pop culture. The Prime Video series stars Dominique Fishback as the lead character Dre, and singer Chlöe assists as her sister. One episode’s co-writer is a familiar name: Malia Obama. The famous former First Daughter has lept into the entertainment industry, and Glover revealed to GQ their plans to work on another project. The short film is slated for release from Glover’s Gilga production company. Obama is said to be creating the film under her mentor’s guidance.

“The first thing we did was talk about the fact that she will only get to do this once. You’re Obama’s daughter,” said Glover. “So, if you make a bad film, it will follow you around.” Although the pressure seems astounding, the 24-year-old is ready for the challenge. Her work in Swarm‘s writing room has been applauded by her colleagues, and the opportunity to work with Hollywood’s best is an accomplishment that her counterparts could only wish for. It’s unclear what the young Obama’s long-term goals are in the industry, but it’s a far cry from the White House—well, not that far. Check out stills from Donald Glover’s GQ feature above.

Childish Gambino Looked Back On Getting Booed While Opening For Kid Cudi Early In His Music Career

It might sound weird to think about now, but before Donald Glover was the celebrated artist he is today, he used to struggle to get any positive feedback on his work at all. In fact, he used to get booed. In a new profile in GQ, the artist alternatively known as Childish Gambino recalled a particularly hairy incident during his early career when an opening set for Kid Cudi went left.

“At the time I had a full band and a violinist,” he recalled. “I just kept turning to the band and telling them, ‘Next song! Next song!’ I put on a really intense show through the boos.”

Of course, that was a long time ago. Donald, who recently revealed he wasn’t quite ready to retire the Gambino persona just yet, has been receiving praise for his show Atlanta, as well as a related series, Swarm, he co-created with Atlanta writer Janine Nabers. He’s been Grammy nominated and has landed a string of plum roles, from Lando in Star Wars spinoff Solo to Simba in the Lion King remake.

He also intimated to GQ that a return to stand-up could be in the offing as well. He says this was encouraged by Chris Rock, who asked him, “‘Why aren’t you doing this sh*t?’” It looks like his tenacious desire to overcome negative reception is still intact.

Childish Gambino Explained How He Started With A ‘Drake Diss’ And Morphed It Into One Of His Biggest Hits

The 2018 single “This Is America” is arguably Childish Gambino’s (aka Donald Glover) biggest song; It’s his only No. 1 single to date, but 2016’s “Redbone” is his most-streamed song with 1.3 billion Spotify plays (vs. about half a billion for “This Is America”), despite its lower Hot 100 peak at No. 12. Either way, it turns out the hit track stemmed from, as Glover put it, a “Drake diss.”

Glover discussed the single in a new video interview with GQ shared today (April 4), and while he said the initial version of the song took digs at Drake, it sounds like that was more of a creative exercise than it was an expression of any actual malice towards Drake. At 17:28 into the video above, Glover said:

“It started as a… the idea for the song started as a joke, to be completely honest. ‘This is America’: that was all we had, was, like, that line. And it started as a Drake diss, to be honest [laughs], as like, a funny way of, like, doing it. But then I was like, ‘This sh*t sounds kind of hard, though, you know?’ So I was like, ‘Let me play with it.’ So we just had that for a long time.”
