George Floyd’s Death: Ex-Minneapolis Cop Convicted In The Killing Gets Out Of Prison

Thomas Lane, one of four former Minneapolis police officers convicted in the 2020 killing of George Floyd, has finished his prison sentence. He had been serving a 36-month sentence at the Englewood prison in Colorado for violating Floyd’s civil rights as well as aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. At the time of the incident, it was Lane’s fourth day on the job as he held down Floyd’s legs during the arrest. Derek Chauvin was the officer who pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck and back.

“The tragic death of George Floyd makes clear the fatal consequences that can result from a police officer’s failure to intervene to protect people in their custody,” Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division said. “Had this defendant and other officers on the scene with Derek Chauvin taken simple steps, George Floyd would be alive today. This sentence should send a message that protecting people in custody is the affirmative duty and obligation of every law enforcement officer, regardless of one’s rank or seniority.”

Randilee Giamusso, a spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, further noted to CNN that Lane “has a two-year term of supervision imposed through the District of Minnesota.” Chauvin, on the other hand, was found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter on the state level. For those charges, he is serving 22 and a half years in prison. Concurrently, he is serving another 21 years in prison for violating Floyd’s civil rights on a federal level.

The other two officers involved in the killing, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao, are both still behind bars for violating Floyd’s civil rights as well as aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. Be on the lookout for further updates on the killing of George Floyd on HotNewHipHop.

Derek Chauvin Facing $9 Million Lawsuit From Excessive Force Claim Predating George Floyd’s Death

It’s been a few years since Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murdering George Floyd. He was found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. The charges came from an incident in 2020 where he used excessive force that resulted in the tragic death of Floyd. His death served as an inciting incident sparking protests all across America against police violence and lack of accountability. Now according to a new lawsuit, it may not have been the first time Chauvin used similar excessive force on someone.

According to TMZ, a lawsuit filed by a woman named Patricia Dawn Welch Day cites similar use of excessive force as what would go on to happen to Floyd. She accuses Chauvin and another officer named Ellen Jensen of using unnecessary force on her during a 2020 incident. She claims she was violently removed from her car with no cause and thrown to the ground where she sustained multiple injuries. After that, she alleges she was handcuffed and Chauvin placed his knee on her back. The lawsuit describes the action as similar to what would ultimately end George Floyd’s life.

The lawsuit also takes aim at the Minneapolis Police Department. The MPD have been subject of tons of controversy both before Floyd’s murder and since. The lawsuit alleges that there was body cam footage verifying Day’s claims but that the department ignored it. Their overlooking of the evidence allowed the officers to continue working and eventually led to the death of George Floyd. She’s seeking $9 million from both officers in the case. That’s in addition to compensatory and punitive damages of an unknown amount.

What do you think of Derek Chauvin facing a $9 million lawsuit for allegedly similar behavior to what he later did to George Floyd? Do you believe the claims in the lawsuit from just a few months before Floyd’s death? Let us know in the comment section below.

Derek Chauvin Heads Back To Prison Following Brutal Stabbing

Derek Chauvin is one of the most hated people on the entire planet. Overall, this is due to the fact that he killed George Floyd by suffocating him with his knee. Subsequently, Chauvin was convicted of murder and was sentenced to a lengthy prison stay. However, that prison stay has not been in easy for Chauvin. Just a couple of weeks ago, the man was stabbed by an inmate by the name of John Turscak. The perpetrator did so 22 times and said he did it because he wanted to show support to the Black Lives Matter movement.

This entire situation has been well-documented. However, Chauvin’s family is not happy with how things went down. Essentially, they found out about what happened through social media. The prison never told them what happened, although they eventually provided an update by saying he was in serious condition. Despite being stabbed nearly two dozen times, Chauvin survived. Now, he has to go back to his previous reality.

Derek Chauvin’s Prison Stabber Was A Mexican Mafia Leader Turned FBI Informant

Earlier this month, it was reported that ex-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who’s convicted of murdering George Floyd, was stabbed in prison. The incident took place at Tucson’s Federal Correctional Institution on November 24. He was hospitalized following the attack, and later reported to be in stable condition.

Soon after, it was revealed that his fellow inmate John Turscak stabbed him 22 times in the prison’s law library with a makeshift knife. He was charged with attempted murder. According to authorities, Turscak claimed he would have killed Chauvin had correctional officers not intervened. He also allegedly told officials that he had been planning the attack for around a month, intentionally choosing Black Friday to carry out the crime. Apparently, he chose the date as a nod to the Black Lives Matter movement and the Black Hand symbol associated with the Mexican Mafia.

Now, a new report by VladTV has uncovered even more about Turscak and his past. According to the outlet, he was serving 30 years on racketeering and murder conspiracy charges. He had only two years to go when he decided to carry out his attack on Chauvin. Before his incarceration, he was a high-ranking member of the Mexican Mafia who went by the name “Stranger.” In the late 90s, he signed an agreement with the FBI to provide them with intel in exchange for money. As part of the deal, he agreed to stop “any unlawful activities except insofar as the FBI determines that such participation is necessary to this investigation.”

They later learned that he continued his illegal activities, however, and eventually charged him in an alleged murder plot. “Turscak harbored obvious animosity toward the government due to the government’s decision to prosecute him for the unauthorized criminal conduct he engaged in while an FBI informant,” a filing by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Dugdale reads. Derek Chauvin’s Attacker Allegedly Planned To Kill Him

According to TMZ, Turscak also allegedly told officials that he planned the attack to take place on Black Friday for around a month. Reportedly, he chose this date as a nod to the Black Lives Matter movement. After news of the attack went public, Chauvin’s mother Carolyn Pawlenty came forward, claiming that nobody informed her that her son had been stabbed. “How the hell do these news agencies know and his own mother doesn’t even know? I can’t even think what to say. I haven’t been to bed and made a path in my kitchen and living room floor by pacing,” she told Alpha News.

Bill Mohrman, Chauvin’s attorney, also claimed that he was having trouble reaching the Bureau of Prisons following the reports. “How the family members who are in charge of Derek’s decisions regarding his personal medical care and his emergency contact were not informed after his stabbing further indicates the institution’s poor procedures and lack of institutional control,” he said. Derek Chauvin’s Mom Learned Of Son’s Stabbing From The News, Not Prison Officials

Carolyn Pawlenty, the mother of convicted murderer Derek Chauvin, has spoken out after reportedly hearing of her son’s stabbing from the media and not prison officials. “How the hell do these news agencies know and his own mother doesn’t even know? I can’t even think what to say. I haven’t been to bed and made a path in my kitchen and living room floor by pacing,” Pawlenty lamented. This is despite Pawlenty claiming to be Chauvin’s emergency contact for events just like this. Furthermore, Chauvin’s attorney claims that the prison didn’t return a call he put in after the stabbing was revealed.

“How the family members who are in charge of Derek’s decisions regarding his personal medical care and his emergency contact were not informed after his stabbing further indicates the institution’s poor procedures and lack of institutional control,” the attorney stated. Prison doctors performed “life-saving measures” on Chauvin, who is now in a “stable condition“.

What We Know About The Derek Chauvin Stabbing

Chauvin was stabbed by another inmate at FCI Tuscon on Friday. According to an anonymous source who spoke with the AP, the medium security facility is “notorious” for security lapses and severe understaffing. However, prison officials have not revealed the identity of the attacker, nor the identity of his attacker. However, prison officials believe that Chauvin will survive the attacker. Despite this, it remains unclear if he will remain at FCI Tuscon or will be transferred to a new facility.

Earlier in the week, the Supreme Court formally denied Chauvin’s appeal. Chauvin is now expected to serve his full 21-year sentence. The crux of the appeal relied on the idea that the protests that emerged as a result of George Floyd’s murder “intimidated” jurors in Chauvin’s case into finding him guilty. Chauvin also pled guilty in his case. However, he has since claimed to have found evidence showing that he was not Floyd’s cause of death. However, the fallout of his stabbing is a developing story and we’ll have any updates as and when they emerge.

Derek Chauvin In Stable State After Jail Stabbing: Report

Derek Chauvin, the former police officer who is incarcerated for the murder of George Floyd, was recently stabbed in federal prison in Arizona on Friday (November 24). This news shocked many, as he supposedly remained in protective custody, but it nonetheless opened up the floodgates of discussion. Moreover, following about a day of debate, the Minnesota Attorney General’s office provided an update on the situation on Saturday (November 25). It relayed that they are aware of the assault and that Chauvin is in stable condition. Still, very little details emerged alongside this story, and we don’t know as of writing this article what the nature of this incident consisted of.

Furthermore, A.G. Keith Ellison provided a statement to CNN about the stabbing. “I am sad to hear that Derek Chauvin was the target of violence,” he expressed. “He was duly convicted of his crimes and, like any incarcerated individual, he should be able to serve his sentence without fear of retaliation or violence.” The former cop recently lost his chance at another appeal in the George Floyd case to change his sentence, which is the only context that we have regarding this attack.

Derek Chauvin In Stable Condition: Report

Still, despite conspiracy theories flying around over this, there is still a lot of healing and processing to do when it comes to this case and the issues of Black U.S. citizens as a whole. Back in May, George Floyd’s sister LaTonya explained what her emotional state was regarding Derek Chauvin. “America might think I’m cr*zy for saying this, but I have to get this off my chest,” she said to FOX 26. “At this point, three years down the line, I do forgive Derek Chauvin for what he did. It’s not okay that he did it, okay? But I have to forgive him in order to move forth with my life. I’ve been running around in circles, he’ll tell you, I have been going through a whole lot. If that higher power don’t forgive us, we’re nothing, we’re lost, we’re out of there.

“I can’t keep living my life with this anger that’s going to form to hate, such as he had,” she went on. “It’s going to lead to me doing something like that because I’m mad, I’m angry. I can’t live with that in me. So I pray for him and I pray that he finds peace within himself. I pray that next time he kneel down, he’s kneeling down to help someone up and not hold them down. God has a plan for everybody. I pray for Derek and I do forgive you. If you are listening, may the peace of God be with you man.” This process doesn’t excuse his evil, but it provides a path forward for those looking to recover and heal from it. Former Officer Derek Chauvin Stabbed in Federal Prison

Screen Shot 2023 11 25 at 4.26.52 AM

Derek Chauvin, the ex-Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd, was seriously injured after being stabbed by another inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Tucson, Arizona. The incident occurred on Friday at approximately 12:30 p.m. local time within the confines of the medium-security prison.

FCI Tucson, known for its security lapses and staffing shortages, has faced challenges in maintaining a safe environment. The Bureau of Prisons verified that an incarcerated individual was assaulted, and in response, prison employees contained the situation and administered “life-saving measures” before transferring the unnamed assailant to a local hospital for further treatment and evaluation. The FBI has been informed of the incident, and visiting privileges at the facility, housing around 380 inmates, have been temporarily suspended. Fortunately, no staff members were injured during the altercation.

Messages seeking comments from Derek Chauvin’s legal representatives and the FBI have been left unanswered as of now.

This marks the second high-profile attack on a federal prisoner in the past five months. In July, former sports doctor Larry Nassar, notorious for sexual abuse scandals, was stabbed by a fellow inmate at a federal penitentiary in Florida.

The incident involving Chauvin is the second major security breach at the Tucson federal prison in just over a year. In November 2022, an inmate at the facility’s low-security prison camp attempted to shoot a visitor in the head. Fortunately, the weapon misfired, and no injuries were reported.

The recent stabbing raises questions about the safety and security measures at federal prisons, with concerns over inmate-on-inmate violence and the effectiveness of protective protocols within the correctional system. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack on Derek Chauvin.

Derek Chauvin Loses Appeal Chance In George Floyd Murder

The Supreme Court shot down Derek Chauvin’s attempt at an appeal in the 2020 murder of George Floyd on Monday. The former Minnesota police officer is currently serving over 20 years in prison for the killing which sparked worldwide protests. His legal team argues that the conviction came during a period of political upheaval and jurors were influenced to not acquit out of fear of further protesting.

“This criminal trial generated the most amount of pretrial publicity in history,” Chauvin’s attorney William Morhmann said at the time, as noted by Fox News. “More concerning are the riots which occurred after George Floyd’s death (and) led the jurors to all express concerns for their safety in the event they acquitted Mr. Chauvin — safety concerns which were fully evidenced by surrounding the courthouse in barbed wire and National Guard troops during the trial and deploying the National Guard throughout Minneapolis prior to jury deliberations.”

Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill sentenced Chauvin to 22.5 years in prison after jurors found him guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in his 2021 trial. Chauvin kneeled on the neck of Floyd for just under 10 minutes prior to his death. Floyd repeatedly pleaded with officers, mentioning his inability to breathe.

Despite pleading guilty at the time, Chauvin says he’s since heard from a Kansas pathologist who claims Floyd could’ve died from complications of a rare tumor called a paraganglioma. He and his legal team want to present that theory in court. They hope it would result in a successful appeal. Be on the lookout for further updates on Derek Chauvin’s sentence on HotNewHipHop.
