Daniel Caesar Takes Viewers On A Journey To Both Sudan And ‘Toronto 2014’ In His New Video

Daniel Caesar has dropped his new music video for “Toronto 2014,” a standout from his album, Never Enough. The visual, which was directed by Trent Munson and features Mustafa, consists of a home video style that was shot in both Sudan and Toronto.

The intention, per a press release, was to showcase “the beauty of both artists’ home countries.”

“This video explores home, the idea that we’re neither global citizens nor nomads; that we live in the air between, questioning our dispensability in any place we’ve lived in,” Mustafa shared. “We travelled to Sudan last year to witness a homecoming, the beauty of Sudan can’t be replicated. We were met with such warmth that you could feel in fragments in this video.”

“Now, as generals senselessly battle & leave our country in ruin, one can’t help but to think of all the kind people and family who assisted us in our journey–the buildings that have collapsed, the trees that went in fire–donate what you can to local efforts,” he added.

Caesar is also aiming to use the video to give back to Sudan, as a portion of the proceeds generated will go to the Sudan Relief Fund and assist those in the country with getting access to food, water, and other essential needs.

Daniel Caesar Issued A Proper Apology To The Black Community For His Controversial ‘Being Sensitive’ Comment

Time is supposed to heal all wounds, but even with his latest apology, Daniel Caesar finds that it may never be enough. The “Let Me Go” singer attempts to correct some of his past wrongs in his music and the media. During an interview to discuss his new album Never Enough with Apple Music, the songwriter spoke about his past controversial statements aimed at the Black community.

In conversation with journalist Nadeska Alexis, the musician took a moment to reflect on his 2019’s commentary regarding the Black community’s response to white social media influencer YesJulz distastefully joking about wanting to wear a graphic t-shirt that read, “N***** lie a lot.”

When asked by Nadeska what it is like looking back on that moment, he answered, “I completely understand the response.”

Caesar added, “And in time, after taking time to get over myself and to really honestly look at myself and everything that was happening, I was wrong. I was wrong, and I’m sorry about that. For a long time, I was like, ‘You can’t do anything, you can’t say anything without whatever. You can do and say whatever you want, but it’s like for every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction. And that’s physics. That’s science. That’s one of those things that the knowledge of that can literally put my mind at ease where I’m like, oh, I did deserve. What happened, happened because I deserved it, because I knocked the domino over and set a course in motion.”

This was a complete about-face from his initial apology, and he also pointed that out, “You learn not to trust what people on the internet have to say and what people that you don’t know have to say,” he said. “Seeing that people that I do know that I care about, them being hurt, then it’s like, ‘ah, damn, all right.’ I was like, ‘okay, you know me.’ It’s because it’s seeing that people that know me, because I felt in my— Clearly my ego is going out of control,” said Caesar.

Fans took to social media to react to what they consider to be his first official “proper” apology since the matter. See some of the responses below.

Daniel Caesar’s “NEVER ENOUGH” Album Is The Main Event On Our “R&B Season” Update

Calling all R&B lovers – our weekly playlist is back with a slew of new must-hear songs for your consideration today (April 9). Of course, it’s Daniel Caesar’s long-awaited NEVER ENOUGH album taking centre stage this time around – namely two of the project’s beautiful collaborative efforts. The first is “Homiesexual,” on which the Canadian crooner teamed up with Ty Dolla $ign for the first time ever. Following that, later on in our round-up, comes “Buyer’s Remorse” featuring Omar Apollo, marking the duo’s second-ever joint effort.

Earlier in the week, female vocalist Mahalia gave us some R&B Season heat in the form of “Terms and Conditions.” The three-and-a-half-minute-long song marks her first release of 2023, following an undeniably successful run last year. The British artist made a name for herself with singles like “Letter To Ur Ex” and “Whatever Simon Says,” as well as an EP named after the former track. Afterward, she closed out 2022 with “Bag Of You,” which has since amassed upwards of 4.3 million streams on Spotify.

Elsewhere on our R&B Season playlist, we hear from THEY. and Fana Hues on “Comfortable.” The song comes from the group’s Nü Moon album, which arrived on New Music Friday (April 7) and also features Yung Bleu Bino Rideau, Phil Adé, Kacey Musgraves, and blackbear. Another noteworthy joint release that caught our attention comes from Austin Millz and the legendary Estelle, who come together this weekend on “Freeway.”

Our final recommendation comes in the form of a solo single from Leon Thomas, called “Crash & Burn.” Like Mahalia, this also marks his first arrival of 2023, and so far, fans have been showing it plenty of love. Daniel Caesar Taps Omar Apollo, Ty Dolla $ign, And Others For “NEVER ENOUGH” Album

While his debut album, Freudian, found sweeping success upon its arrival, Daniel Caesar’s second studio release, CASE STUDY 01, didn’t receive nearly as much support. As you may recall, this is chiefly due to the Canadian’s polarizing comments about race relations back in 2019, at which time he suggested that white people didn’t deserve the hate sometimes put onto them by the Black community. His career took a seriously strong hit as a result, though he’s coming back stronger than ever this New Music Friday (April 7) with his long-awaited NEVER ENOUGH project.

The 15-track release was led by singles such as “Do You Like Me?” “Let Me Go,” and more recently, “Valentina,” all of which find Caesar operating solo. However, the rest of the album boasts some impressive collaborators, such as Mustafa on “Toronto 2014,” serpentwithfeet on “Disillusioned,” and Ty Dolla $ign on “Homiesexual.” Additionally, the R&B crooner tapped Omar Apollo for “Buyer’s Remorse” following their previous work together on “Invincible.”

Daniel Caesar and Omar Apollo Reunite on “Buyer’s Remorse”

Reflecting on the making of NEVER ENOUGH with GRAMMY.com, Caeser shared, “I go into an album thinking I know what I’m gonna sing about or write about, and then ¾ of the way through the album, it always changes. Every time I pick a title starting an album, I know it’s gonna change, but I pick it so that I have a bearing. I can’t stick to a program, so I know it’s gonna tell me what it is. With songs, too, I learn about myself by writing.”

Stream Daniel Caesar and Omar Apollo’s “Buyer’s Remorse” collab on YouTube above, and check out the full NEVER ENOUGH album on Spotify/Apple Music. Afterward, tell us what your thoughts are on the Canadian’s highly anticipated return in the comments. For more release recommendations, tap in later this weekend for our R&B Season update.

Daniel Caesar Gave A Tender Performance Of ‘Let Me Go’ On ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’

Daniel Caesar’s new album Never Enough arrives in just one week. Singles like “Do You Like Me,” “Let Me Go,” and “Valentina” are holding fans over in the meantime, so he brought one to late-night television.

On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the Canadian singer gave a thoughtful performance of “Let Me Go.” With a floor covered in fog and colorful lights making everything radiant, the live rendition of the song is even more emotional and tender than the recorded version as he croons the heart-wrenching hook, “Baby, won’t you let me go?” It’s a meditative, poignant experience that the crowd is lucky to witness in real life.

It makes sense that his upcoming shows emphasize intimacy. The Almost Enough: The Intimate Sessions tour is only hitting small-cap venues in order to help him connect with fans on a deeper level when he plays his new material to audiences.

“A chance for me to sing the album to a select few fans that have really been here since the beginning,” he explained on Instagram. “Excited to connect with each and every one of you.”
