Nav: The Canadian Rapper & Producer Making Waves In Hip Hop

Nav has been making waves in hip hop since he first emerged on the scene. The Canadian artist has played a role in some of hip hop’s most notable hits in recent memory. He started his musical journey as a producer and gained popularity as a rapper. Known for his distinctly nasal tone and auto-tuned melodies, Nav has consistently released albums since 2017 and collaborated with the biggest names in hip hop. Rooted in a musical background, Nav’s uncle was a Punjabi musician from India, inspiring him to become interested in creating music of his own. He got his start uploading songs on Soundcloud and YouTube in 2015.

His keen ear for melody and production on early songs like 2016’s “Myself” landed him a record deal. That same year, Nav signed with fellow Toronto native The Weeknd’s XO and its parent company Republic Records, joining the superstar singer and Palestinian-Canadian rapper Belly. Proud of his Punjabi roots, Nav proclaimed himself “the first brown boy to get it poppin’.” Now a multi-platinum artist and Juno Award nominee, he has propelled himself to new heights of success. Today, we take a look at the career of Nav so far.

Nav’s Hand in Production

Before breaking out into notoriety and climbing onto the charts as an artist, Nav found early success as a producer. He co-produced Drake’s 2015 lethal diss against Meek Mill, “Back to Back” and is also credited on the track as a songwriter. Following that hit, he released “Myself,” a viral song that captured the ear of his now-manager, Cash XO. Nav’s production style often consists of moody and spacious trap beats, allowing room for a rapper to provide catchy melodies.

Primarily crafting beats for his own albums and his XO affiliates, Nav notably co-produced “Friends” from Everything is Love, JAY-Z and Beyoncé’s 2018 collaborative album as The Carters. The first song to garner him mainstream attention as both a producer and featured artist was Travis Scott’s “Beibs in the Trap” back in 2016. Since then, the two have become frequent collaborators. Working with notable names in hip hop has allowed Nav to grow in popularity and expand his fanbase.

Numerous Collaborations

Collaboration is one of Nav’s strong suits, as his most successful songs have been in tandem with another artist. He has been featured on songs from Young Thug, AJ Tracey, Headie One, A$AP Ferg, and many more. Nav’s biggest guest features include his work with Travis Scott on the aforementioned “Biebs in the Trap” and “Yosemite” from Astroworld. Additionally, he was featured on the massive hit “Lemonade” with Internet Money, Gunna, and Don Toliver

While many tap Nav for features, the Canadian rapper and producer has recruited prominent names for his own tracks. Most of Nav’s most significant hits feature artists like The Weeknd, Lil Uzi Vert, Meek Mill, and Gunna, all of which are multi-platinum in Canada and the United States. His highest charting single is 2020’s “Turks” with Gunna and Travis Scott, peaking at No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100. Nav’s biggest hits and collaborations appear on his numerous albums and mixtapes, which he releases quite frequently.

Consistent Releases

Between producing for other artists and lending vocals to tracks from his contemporaries, Nav has been busily working on his own music. He has actively released a full-length album almost every year since 2017. His first initial releases were considered commercial mixtapes, including his self-titled debut and Perfect Timing with Metro Boomin. Nav released his debut studio album, Reckless, in 2018, followed by 2019’s Brown Boy and Bad Habits, which went No. 1. His consistent release schedule has remained active in the new decade. He started 2020 by releasing the chart-topping project Good Intentions, along with Brown Boy 2 and Emergency Tsunami that same year.

Nav’s most recent album, Demons Protected by Angels, was released in 2022. With a rapidly growing music catalog, he continues building buzz for himself. He also does not seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Nav continues to add to his extensive discography with his upcoming album, Nav 2, set to be released later this year. He toured North America in 2023, generating excitement for his new project. With a new album dropping almost every year, Nav’s fanbase has continued to grow, making even larger waves for himself.

Daniel Caesar’s “NEVER ENOUGH” Album Is The Main Event On Our “R&B Season” Update

Calling all R&B lovers – our weekly playlist is back with a slew of new must-hear songs for your consideration today (April 9). Of course, it’s Daniel Caesar’s long-awaited NEVER ENOUGH album taking centre stage this time around – namely two of the project’s beautiful collaborative efforts. The first is “Homiesexual,” on which the Canadian crooner teamed up with Ty Dolla $ign for the first time ever. Following that, later on in our round-up, comes “Buyer’s Remorse” featuring Omar Apollo, marking the duo’s second-ever joint effort.

Earlier in the week, female vocalist Mahalia gave us some R&B Season heat in the form of “Terms and Conditions.” The three-and-a-half-minute-long song marks her first release of 2023, following an undeniably successful run last year. The British artist made a name for herself with singles like “Letter To Ur Ex” and “Whatever Simon Says,” as well as an EP named after the former track. Afterward, she closed out 2022 with “Bag Of You,” which has since amassed upwards of 4.3 million streams on Spotify.

Elsewhere on our R&B Season playlist, we hear from THEY. and Fana Hues on “Comfortable.” The song comes from the group’s Nü Moon album, which arrived on New Music Friday (April 7) and also features Yung Bleu Bino Rideau, Phil Adé, Kacey Musgraves, and blackbear. Another noteworthy joint release that caught our attention comes from Austin Millz and the legendary Estelle, who come together this weekend on “Freeway.”

Our final recommendation comes in the form of a solo single from Leon Thomas, called “Crash & Burn.” Like Mahalia, this also marks his first arrival of 2023, and so far, fans have been showing it plenty of love. Stream all of our new favourite R&B songs exclusively on Spotify below. Afterward, tell us which of our selections you’ll be adding to your own rotation in the comments. Daniel Caesar Gets Vulnerable On Beautiful New “Let Me Go” Single: Stream

Though he was cancelled by many in the music community a few years ago, Daniel Caesar seems poised to make a grand comeback in 2023. His first single of the season, “Do You Like Me?” landed at the end of January, and has since amassed upwards of seven million streams on Spotify. Following that, his “Let Me Go” track came this New Music Friday (February 10).

The emotional title finds the R&B vocalist pleading with a lover to relinquish their grip on him. “I’m tryna breathe, why won’t you let me? / I’m tryna leave, please just forget me,” the first verse begins. “And honestly, our sun is setting / Can hardly believe this got so messy.”

“Let Me Go” will appear on Caesar’s upcoming album, apparently called Brutus Embarks. The effort will mark his first release since 2019’s CASE STUDY 01, which found him working alongside greats like Pharrell Williams and John Mayer. Additionally, he was joined by Brandy on one of the project’s most popular titles, “LOVE AGAIN.”

As REVOLT notes, the 27-year-old hinted that he’s entering a new musical era in the caption of a recent Instagram post. “Hello, world. I was born a few minutes ago and I’m already learning,” Caesar wrote at the time. “This isn’t supposed to be a beginning, just a long way from before. I see most of me in almost every one of you. Mirror, mirror. There is so much to talk about, we’re closer than you think. For now, let’s just call this the beginning.”

NAV Preps For “NAV 2” Project With New “Lately” Single

In the latter half of 2022, NAV impressed his fanbase with the arrival of Demons Protected By Angels. The 19-track effort landed on DSPs in early September, complete with guest appearances from Bryson Tiller, Lil Uzi Vert, Gunna, and more. To celebrate that project, the Canadian will be heading out on his Never Sleep tour next week – but not before sharing a new single with the world.

On Friday (February 10), the 33-year-old delivered “Lately,” which is set to appear on his forthcoming NAV 2 album. According to a press release, the singer’s next effort will be fully written and produced by him. It also marks the follow-up to 2017’s NAV, which includes just one feature from The Weeknd on “Some Way.”

His “Lately” single arrives just in time for NAV’s North American tour, which launches on Valentine’s Day in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Afterward, the artist is due to take over cities like Detroit, New York, Atlanta, Dallas, Seattle, and Phoenix with special guests SoFaygo and RealestK. He’ll also make stops in Vancouver, BC on March 12th and his final performance will take place in Toronto on April 11th.

For the Never Sleep tour’s last night in the 6ix, NAV will perform alongside R&B star Bryson Tiller. On the latter’s Demons Protected By Angels album, he linked up with the Kentucky-born singer to craft their “Reset” track. It remains unclear if the latter will make any appearances on the upcoming NAV 2 album, but here’s hoping.

Daniel Caesar Preps For Upcoming Album With Groovy “Do You Like Me?” Single

For Daniel Caesar, 2022 was a surprisingly quiet year musically. In the first few weeks, he made an appearance on FKA Twigs’ ethereal CAPRISONGS tape. After that, we didn’t hear from him again until April. In the spring, he teamed up with BADBADNOTGOOD for his emotional “Please Do Not Lean” single.

“This is an introduction to the sound and tone of the next chapter in my career,” he previously said of the track. Additionally, he teased that his third studio album was in the works, and joined Justin Bieber on stage at Coachella to perform their hit “Peaches” collaboration.

As January comes to an end, Caesar is finally ready to share more of his creations with the world. On Friday, the 27th, he delivered his “Do You Like Me?” single, along with the teaser for a music video that’s due out later.

For now, fans have been treated to a DSP release and lyric video, leaving many listeners with the words stuck in their heads all weekend long.

As Complex notes, the funky tune is dedicated to a special person in the singer’s life. “[It’s] a song about a woman I respect deeply,” Caesar said, later describing it as “90 degrees of a love triangle.”

The vocalist’s next project will be his first since 2019’s CASE STUDY 01. On that, he connected with several noteworthy artists, including John Mayer, Brandy, and Pharrell Williams.

PARTYNEXTDOOR Brings “Her Old Friends” To Our “R&B Season” Update

Great news for R&B lovers – we have a selection of new songs for you on our weekly playlist update. Of course, there aren’t as many titles as you’ll find on our hip-hop hits Fire Emoji roundup, but they’re certainly setting the tone for what else is to come from our favourite artists this year.

The first spot on our list goes to PARTYNEXTDOOR, whose “Her Old Friends” single has already become a fan favourite. As you may recall, at the end of 2022 the music catalogues of several OVO artists began vanishing from streaming.

Unsurprisingly, this sent listeners scrambling for answers. Thankfully, the arrival of a great new track from the R&B vocalist seems to have settled their nerves.

Throughout his verses, PND sings, “It’s gon’ be so hard to clean back that body when I gwaan it / Yeah, I wants to take her out the game / Who’s to f*ckin’ blame? What’s my f*ckin’ name? / Yeah, I was playin’ by the rules, only let her do wrongs.”

Our second new single for your streaming pleasure comes from RealestK. He shows out on “Wish You Well” this weekend, which made its official debut on Friday (January 13).

In recent months, the Canadian R&B artist also shared his Dreams 2 Reality project. This helped him make his mark within the industry, holding his own across 14 tracks, including singles like “WFM,” “Love Me,” and “Toxic.”

Finally, we have a reimagined throwback from Jeremih. He sped up his previously released “Changes” song, and you’ll definitely want to have it on your winter playlist.

Further down you’ll find new-ish arrivals from names like Queen Naija, Vedo, Chris Brown, SZA, and more.

Stream our R&B Season update exclusively on Spotify below. Additionally, you can find more new music recommendations on our Fire Emoji playlist here.
