Jay-Z’s Full Interview With Gayle King On CBS Is Now Available: Watch

Jay-Z might have the most impressive resumé in hip-hop history, so any interview with him is a gold mine of reflections and revelations. Moreover, he recently held one with Gayle King on CBS, which she conducted at the Brooklyn Public Library’s The Book of HOV exhibit in his hometown. While we’ve gotten a lot of snippets from it so far, such as the rapper’s take on the viral “dinner with Jay or $500K” debate, we now finally have the full interview to watch. It’s about 21 minutes long and goes over pretty much every major aspect of his life and career. After all, the New York legend sat in an exhibit dedicated to his history; it’s all around him, but most importantly, always in him to carry and share.

For example, one prominent point of discussion, especially for hardcore rap fans, was his musical origins and the development of his artistry. Jay-Z sat in a replica of the legendary Baseline Studios, where he recorded much of his most important and excellent material, while recalling the origins of his “One-Take Hov” nickname. Amid various vinyl copies and allusions to his already historically cemented career, he spoke on what it would take for him to release more music. In every sense of the word, this conversation with the 53-year-old is baked with tradition and impact, but also with a newfound sense of self-awareness.

And just as a writer, a technical song-maker. Song-making skills with real stories is when it all came together on this album.”

Mo’Nique Sues CBS And Paramount Over Unpaid Royalties

Mo’Nique has carved an impressive career for herself in film, television, and stand-up comedy. However, her breakout role was inarguably the UPN sitcom The Parkers. The show followed the titular Parker family, primarily comprised of single mother Nikki (Mo’Nique) and college-aged daughter Kimberly (Countess Vaughn).

The Parker ran for five seasons and 110 episodes between 1999 and 2004. Despite a cool critical reception, which was common for Black-led sitcoms at the time, the show was a ratings success. Paramount released The Parkers on DVD in 2014. Following a number of film roles, Mo’Nique hosted The Mo’Nique Show between 2009 and 2011. One 2009 episode served as a reunion for The Parkers. She released a Netflix stand-up special earlier this year.

Mo’Nique Alleges Unpaid Royalties

According to a lawsuit filed this week, Mo’Nique is seeking monetary damages due to what the suit calls an “artificial depression” of the shows’ profitability. “While the Series has proven to be a major financial success for its producers and distributors, the series’ talent have not been permitted to share in the fruits of that success,” the lawsuit reads. The suit names CBS, Paramount, and Big Ten Productions as defendants. Additionally, Mo’Nique posted to Instagram, saying, “Today we filed a lawsuit to make sure we are fairly paid money that we are owed for “The Parkers”. Actors rely on the good faith of Hollywood companies to honor their profit participation agreements.” Profit participation agreements are better known as royalties. Royalties are a recurring amount of money production staff and actors receive for the re-broadcasting of a television show or film.

The suit comes at a pivotal time for the entertainment industry. The Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) is currently voting on whether to authorize strike action. If the motion passes, it will be the first major writer’s strike since 2007. Part of the WGA’s concerns is the way that royalties have been restructured in the era of streaming platforms to keep money away from the creators. In this sense, the WGA’s concerns heavily echo Mo’Nique’s legal claims against CBS and Paramount. However, CBS and Paramount are yet to respond to the allegations.

While Damon Wayans Sr. will be starring in the show, he will also serve as an executive producer and co-writer with Kevin Hench, the former executive producer of Last Man Standing. CBS will be sharing additional information regarding the creation of the show in the coming weeks. The father/son duo recently worked together on an episode of CBS’s Happy Together in 2018. Damon Wayans Sr. also starred as Roger Murtaugh in the three seasons of Lethal Weapon (2016) on Fox. most recently. However, some of his most famous credits back decades, all the way to Happy Endings (2011), The Underground (2006), and My Wife and Kids (2001). Damon Wayans Jr.’s recent credits include The Harder They Fall (2021), and Supercool (2021). He’s been a voice actor for Bob’s Burgers on Fox, where he voices Arnold Evans.

This is CBS’s first comedy pilot order of the 2022-2023 season. Along with the show by the Wayans duo, the network ordered pilots for a new version of Matlock, where Kathy Bates will play the title character. CBS also ordered a pilot for a spinoff of The Good Wife starring Carrie Preston, from creators Robert and Michelle King. CBS announced both orders in January 2023. This likely marks the beginning of a series of pilot orders across multiple networks and streaming platforms. Let us know what you think of this idea, in the comments below.

‘@midnight’ Reboot To Replace James Corden’s ‘The Late Late Show’

@midnight is returning to TV’s comedy lineup after 6 years. Following James Corden’s departure from The Late Late Show, there will be no new host. Instead, The Late Late Show will be ending after almost 3 decades. CBS will instead be airing a reboot of the game show, @midnight. The show originally aired for 600 episodes on Comedy Central from 2013-2017. It will now occupy CBS’s 12:30 time slot, according to sources. The switch will happen in the spring, when Corden says goodbye to the show after almost 9 years.

The original host of @midnight, Chris Hardwick, will likely not return to the reboot. According to Variety, CBS hopes to have a female host on the show. They are also pushing to have more diversity both in front of and behind the camera. In its heyday, @midnight had a quick-witted rotating crew of comedians who played improv games about what was trending on social media. One episode could range in topics from a new Apple emoji to absurd but viral YouTube hits. Guests ranged from Jenny Slate to Ali Wong and even Weird Al Yankovic.

We hear that Stephen Colbert will be executive producing the new @midnight reincarnation. The show comes from the comedy brand ‘Funny or Die’, who created the original series on Comedy Central. This makes two hours of late-night television involvement for Colbert, who also hosts The Late Show at 11:30 on CBS. Colbert also produces Tooning Out the News and Hell of a Week with Charlamagne Tha God, as was previously reported.

A CBS spokesperson declined to comment on the network’s plans for the future of its airtime. However, CBS’s taking of @midnight would mark its second raid from Comedy Central for its late-night airtime. Stephen Colbert jumped from Comedy Central’s The Daily Show to CBS’s The Late Show in 2015. Additionally, Corden’s lack of replacement follows a trend of what’s happening with Late Night TV. TBS never replaced Conan O’Brien following his departure from Conan in 2021. NBC never replaced Lily Singh following the cancelation of A Little Late. The future of late-night TV is certainly up in the air.

Lizzo Reflected On The ‘Milestone’ Of Owning A House After Sleeping In Her Car A Decade Ago

It’s been hard to pin Lizzo down this year. Whether she was on the road as part of her successful world tour, hosting events to promote her Love, Lizzo documentary, making an appearance on national television, or attending award shows, the “About Damn Time” singer has refused to let up. Now that Christmas is just days away, the Emmy Award winner is ready to unplug from work to spend time with her family at home for the holidays.

Despite a TikTok troll’s attempt to make the songwriter feel guilty about her recently purchased California mansion, Lizzo refused to let that stop her from being proud of the accomplishment. In a preview clip of her upcoming appearance on CBS Sunday Morning, the singer shared just how important the title homeowner is to her.

As correspondent Tracy Smith joins Lizzo in her festively decorated living room, Smith says, “Just ten years ago, you were sleeping in your car.”

While reflecting on what Smith said, Lizzo emotionally responds, “Yeah, yeah. And, like,” she deeply exhales, “Staying in, like, people’s rooms and sleeping on their couches. And now, on this past tour, which I was blessed to, you know, stay in really nice places, but I was like, ‘I miss my house. Like, I can’t wait to come back to my own home and to my bed.’ And I was like, ‘This is the first time I’ve ever said this.’”

Purchasing a home, let alone your first home is a big deal for anyone but as Lizzo put it, “It’s a milestone for me,” as the Grammy winner spent a decade battling homelessness.

The full interview will be broadcast on Christmas Day (Sunday, December 25) on CBS and streamed on Paramount+. In the meantime, watch the preview clip above.

Lizzo is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
