Beyonce Collaborator Recalls Her Making Emmy Replicas For Her Team After “Homecoming” Loss

Hannah Beachler, an Academy Award-winning production designer who has worked with Beyonce, recently recalled the singer passing out Emmy replicas for her team after the documentary, Homecoming, lost at the awards ceremony. Beachler wrote about the story on Twitter while sharing a video of Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King praising the Renaissance singer.

“Working with Beyoncé over the years, I have said this each and every time,” Beachler began in her series of posts. “It’s not just on stage. She is tentacles of light, and those tentacles wrap you in power, love, and confidence. She is kind and protective and she’s a girls girl. This is her presence daily.”

She continued: “She is a true Mama to her babies too. And she works, not to perfection but until it’s right. She is in love with her husband and he’s (a comedian and kind) in love with her. But be clear don’t cross her.”

In another post, Beachler explained that she learned of the Emmy replicas while working on Black is King. She wrote: “One last little story. When I started on Black is King & went to the L.A. offices. There was a bunch of little plastic Emmy Awards w/handwritten names on them,” she said. “They told me b/c they didn’t win for Homecoming, B stayed up after & made everyone their own special one w/ a note.” Check out Beachler’s tweets regarding Beyonce below.

The praise for Beyonce’s behind-the-scenes behavior comes on the same day that Lizzo has been coming under fire for a lawsuit that accuses her of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment. Three dancers are suing her for damages over emotional distress including unpaid wages, loss of earnings, and attorney’s fees.

Dr. Dre Is Officially An “Icon”

The Hip Hop Icon Award was designed to “[recognize] the contributors, creatives and professionals with a proven track record of uplifting Black music.” It was also conceptualized alongside the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective. This year’s ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards ceremony will also honor the 50-year-anniversary of hip hop.

Dr. Dre was honored again earlier this year at the Grammys. He was given the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award in February. “I’m extremely moved by this award,” he said upon receiving it. “I want to say thank you to the Recording Academy and the Black Music Collective for this honor.” He continued, “I know everybody in here probably knows this already, but this is the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop. Make some noise for Hip Hop!” Dr. Dre went on, “Where would I be without it? Where would a lot of people be without Hip Hop, to be honest? Hip Hop became a lifeline for me as a teenager growing up in Compton, and it started with a song called ‘The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel.’”

Cam’ron Accepts Legacy Leader Award At Black Independence Awards In Harlem

Cam’ron accepted the Legacy Leader award in Harlem on Saturday night at the second annual Black Independence Awards. During his speech, Cam reflected on his upbringing and his relationship with his late mother as well as the beginning of his career in music.

“My mom moved to Harlem from Atlantic City in 1963 and I always wondered, ‘What if I grew up in Atlantic City?’ Then I was like, ‘Thank God I didn’t grow up in Atlantic City.’ … Growing up in the late 70’s and early 80’s in Harlem, it was violence-ridden, drug-infested and I lived smack-dab in the middle of it,” Cam began.

From there, he recalled meeting Ma$e in college and getting more serious about hip-hop after seeing his fellow Harlem native, Big L, land a record deal. He also took a moment to thank Dame Dash, who helped him get out of a record deal and assisted him at Roc-A-Fella. Check out Cam’ron’s full speech at the awards ceremony below.

Donald Glover, Kid Cudi, & The Weeknd Among Artists Competing For Emmy Nominations

Common, Kid Cudi, and The Weeknd, among other artists, are competing for nominations at the upcoming 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. Variety reports that all three artists, as well as Donald Glover, Al Yankovic, and more, have entries for various Emmy categories as voting kicked off, last week.

Common is hoping to be nominated for his contributions to Netflix’s Mo in the “Outstanding Music Composition for a Series” category. Cudi and Glover hope their respective shows, Entergalactic and Swarm, give them the nod. The Weeknd has a chance for a nomination in the “Music Direction” category for his HBO special, The Weeknd Live at Sofi Stadium.

If successful in the “Outstanding Music Composition for a Series” category, it won’t be the first Emmy win for Common. He actually became the first rapper to win an Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar back in 2017 following his win for “Letter to the Free.” “I want to thank God first and foremost,” the Chicago rapper told Deadline at the time. “Any time I get a chance to work with Ava DuVernay it leads to something positive, something strong.” He only needs a Tony to achieve the highly-coveted EGOT status.

While the nominations for the Primetime Emmy Awards have yet to be announced, some of the Southeast Emmy winners have been revealed, including Killer Mike. The rapper won the “Interview/Discussion – Long Form” category for his PBS show, Love & Respect with Killer Mike.  “Winning Season. Gratitude,” Mike wrote in the Instagram post celebrating his win. “I am beyond Humbled and Honored. Me and the OG SC (Scott Carter) both born on 420 & created #LoveAndRespect & now are twining as we winning our 1st Emmy. God is Great.”

The organization honored Mike in the “Interview/Discussion – Long Form” category. However, they postponed the actual ceremony out of respect for the WGA writer’s strike. “The 50th Annual Daytime Emmy® Awards planned for Friday, June 16 on CBS is postponed due to the WGA strike,” the National Academy for Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) said in an official statement. “In addition, the Creative Arts & Lifestyle ceremony, planned for Saturday, June 17, has been postponed pending a strike resolution. We look forward to our community gathering together as one to celebrate our Golden Anniversary and all of the talented nominees and honorees at a later date.” Check out Mike’s post acknowledging the win below.

Will Smith Delivers 1st Awards Show Speech Since Oscars

Will Smith has delivered his first acceptance speech at an awards show since slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards. After winning The Beacon Award alongside director Antoine Fuqua for their work on Emancipation, Smith addressed the crowd at the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) Awards in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, on Wednesday night.

Emancipation was the individual most difficult film of my entire career. It was all outdoors, that is true,” he joked, according to Variety. “It was the second day of shooting, and 110 degrees… I was in a scene with one of the white actors. The actor decided to ad-lib. So, we’re doing the scene. I did my line. He did his line. And then – ad lib – he spit in the middle of my chest. The actor felt that the ad-lib had gone well. So, we do take two. I do my line. He does his line – and spits in the middle of my chest again… In the distance, I hear a voice. And Antoine says, ‘Hey, let’s do a take without the spit.’ And in that moment, I knew that God was real.”

Smith further thanked AAFCA officials for “keeping our stories alive” as well as producers at Apple TV+ for their support in making the project. “It was the first time I had heard from a studio that the story was more important than how much it costs to get it done… They make iPhones. They can do it,” he said. Smith also recently won Best Actor at the NAACP Image Awards but wasn’t present to accept the award.

While Smith appears to be moving on from the 2022 Oscars incident, Chris Rock brought the slap up again during his new Netflix special, Selective Outrage. On stage, the comedian joked about Jada’s infamous “entanglement” cheating scandal involving August Alsina. He poked fun at Smith for discussing the scandal during an episode of Jada’s Red Table Talk show.

Lizzo Says She & Adele Got “So Drunk” At The Grammys

Lizzo says that she and Adele got “so drunk” at the Grammys during an interview on Elvis Duran and the Morning Show. The “Truth Hurts” singer explained that the two smuggled in several flasks of alcohol into the venue. Lizzo says that she brought in a flask of tequila for herself and one for Adele containing white wine. The ceremony was held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, last weekend.

“I legitimately was so drunk,” Lizzo admitted. “Me and Adele were drinking so much that we didn’t even really know what the categories were at this point.” From there, Lizzo explained that the two couldn’t keep up with what was going on during the ceremony. “We were like, ‘Did they do Best Artist?’” Lizzo said. “We didn’t even know, and when it was time and they would call our names we would just be like, ‘Smile.’”

Lizzo’s Interview

Continuing with the story, Lizzo added that she “brought it for Adele, and then I drank hers. I had so many flasks. I had like three flasks at the table. Always be prepared.” “I had zero say in where I was sitting, but Adele had 100% say in where she was sitting,” she continued. “So therefore Adele FaceTimed me when I was in Grammy rehearsal a few days before. She was like ‘Oh my God! Oh my God, we’re sitting next to each other.’”

As her nominations, Lizzo won the Record of the Year award for her song, “About Damn Time.” “When they called my name I was in total shock because I didn’t expect to win at all, let alone a big one,” she said of her win. Lizzo wasn’t alone in her win either. Adele also picked up Best Pop Solo Performance with her song “Easy on Me.”

Elsewhere in the night, Beyoncé took home awards for Best Traditional R&B Performance, Best Dance/Electronic Recording, Best Song Written for Visual Media, Best R&B Song, and Best Dance/Electric Record. The awards made her the winningest Grammy Award artist of all time. She also tied her husband, Jay-Z, for the most nominations of all time.
