Drake has had a tough year. The rapper had war declared on him every other superstar in the genre. Then, he went toe-to-toe with Kendrick Lamar. He did an admirable job, but he lost, and he did so by a wide margin. “Not Like Us” ran the summer, and Drake has struggled to regain his chart dominance. At least, with new music. The 6 God managed to get a lick back on Thursday night, though. Drake and K. Dot were going head-to-head in several categories at the Billboard Music Awards. And Drizzy was the big winner.
Drake took home three massive awards at the BBMAs. He won Top Rap Artist, Top Rap Male Artist, and his 2023 album For All the Dogs won Top Rap Album. The decision to award For All the Dogs to Drake is somewhat logical, since Lamar didn’t have an album during the eligible period for consideration. He was still nominated for Top Rap Artist and Top Rap Male Artist, though, and Drake swept him. Kendrick Lamar did not win anything at the Billboard Music Awards, actually. There were only three artists nominated for Top Rap Male Artist, with the other being Travis Scott. That’s a pretty pointed W on Drake’s part.
It is worth noting, however, what For All the Dogs did beat. Lamar may not have had an album, but Future and Metro Boomin did. We Don’t Trust You went up against Drake’s latest for Top Rap Album and lost. It is a notable decision, given the Future and Metro album effectively started the Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar battle in the first place. Lamar is featured on the album single “Like That,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 and saw the rapper bash both Drizzy and J. Cole. All of Drake’s ops were shut out, and he managed to take home of trio of statues.
Billboard did extend flowers to both Drake and Lamar in the hours leading up to the awards, however. The organization dropped the shared revenue totals for the diss tracks that both artists released during the year. Drizzy and Kenny were responsible for a staggering $15.3 million. Lamar led the pack with “Not Like Us” and the aforementioned “Like That.” Still, Drizzy came in third and fourth with “Family Matters” and “Push Ups.” These two dominated the year’s rap cycle, there’s no denying it.
The 2024 Billboard Music Awards are set to air on December 12 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox (or on-demand via Paramount+). Aside from the awards themselves, the broadcast will also feature performances, and now we’re getting a clearer idea of who’s involved.
Today (December 4), it was revealed that Coldplay has joined the show. This news follows the announcements of Seventeen, Teddy Swims, and Tyla as performers earlier this week.
Coldplay is a finalist in a pair of categories this year: Top Duo/Group and Top Rock Touring Artist. It seems like they have a good shot in at least the latter category, considering their Music Of The Spheres tour has brought in about a billion dollars (not hyperbole) as the highest-grossing rock tour ever.
Meanwhile, both Swims and Tyla are in the running for a number of awards. Tyla is up for Top R&B Artist, Top R&B Female Artist, Top Afrobeats Artist, Top R&B Album (for Tyla), Top R&B Song (for “Water”), and Top Afrobeats song (for “Truth Or Dare,” “Water,” AND “Jump” with Gunna and Skillibeng). As for Swims, he’s a finalist for Top New Artist, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Hot 100 Song, Top Streaming Song, Top Radio Song, Top Selling Song, Top Billboard Global 200 Song, and Top Billboard Global (Excl. U.S.) Song (all for “Lose Control”). Seventeen is also up for Top K-Pop Touring Artist.
This is the time of year where the music industry generally starts to wind down (unless you’re Kendrick Lamar). Most of the year’s biggest albums have been released and folks are gearing up to make a splash next year.
There’s still one more significant matter to tackle in 2024, though: the 2024 Billboard Music Awards, which are set to air on December 12 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox (or on-demand via Paramount+). Today (November 25), the finalists were announced.
Unlike other award shows, instead of being voted on by a committee, winners are determined by year-end Billboard chart data from October 28, 2023 to October 19, 2024, so the winners are based on data, not the opinions of a select few.
Zach Bryan is this year’s leading finalist with 21 entries, while Taylor Swift is close behind with 17. After them are Morgan Wallen (15 entries), Sabrina Carpenter (9), Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Post Malone, Teddy Swims, Tyla (8 each), Bad Bunny, Benson Boone, Chandler Moore, Jung Kook, Naomi Raine, Shaboozey, and SZA (6 each).
First-time finalists include Swims, Tyla, Boone, Shaboozey, Tommy Richman, and Chappell Roan.

Kendrick Lamar and Drake already had their big rap showdown earlier this year that still has legs, but they’ve got one more head-to-head before 2024 ends. At the Billboard Music Awards, which take place on Thursday, December 12, both artists were nominated in the Top Rap Artist and Top Rap Male Artist categories. Considering that the 6ix God also received nominations for huge categories like Top Artist, it doesn’t seem like a particularly close race, but K.Dot also has plenty of chances for uncontested wins in other categories. The BBMAs are different to other award shows as far as criteria, and Drizzy is an absolute juggernaut when it comes to wins from the outlet.
As such, maybe these Billboard Music Awards will hold some surprises, but the Kendrick Lamar and Drake battle was never about sales… Or about Grammys, for that matter. It’s a biggest hater competition. Both MCs are still making a case for themselves being the biggest hater, with the Compton lyricist dropping the fiery and confrontational album GNX and his Toronto rival pettily calling out “fairy tales” on xQc’s stream.
But Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s feud also roped in a lot of other people just by pure association, which some of them found quite odd. For example, during his aforementioned livestream with xQc yesterday (Sunday, November 24), the OVO mogul called Steve Lacy “a fragile opp,” which The Internet’s guitarist found hilarious. He took to Instagram to issue out some troll responses to the call-out, joking about looking for someone to be fragile with him. Top5, a Toronto rapper, is also completely anti-West Coast right now, and it seems like a rite of passage for any affiliate of either superstar. There’s a choice: you call the other side out, or you wait for them to call you out.
Of course, the battle that began with “Like That” will always connect Kendrick Lamar to Drake, and vice versa. As such, there will be more showdowns between them to witness in the future, such as the latter’s Australian tour starting the same day as the Super Bowl. But we doubt that they will be the ones driving those conversations.
Drake shared a picture of the two Billboard Music Awards that he won in 2023 for Top Rap Song and Top Rap Album on his Instagram Story, Tuesday, while fans anticipate a response to Kendrick Lamar amid their ongoing feud. In the post, Drake wrote, “@21savage wipe down,” tagging his collaborator on Her Loss and “Rich Flex,” which notched them the awards.
If the post is a flex on Kendrick Lamar, the iconic rapper likely won’t take much offense. He’s already won six Billboard Music Awards throughout his career. They include Top Rap Album, Top Rap Artist, and more. Drake still has yet to address Lamar with a diss track of his own.
The feud began when Cole referenced Lamar on his collaboration with Drake, “First Person Shooter.” He rapped: “Love when they argue the hardest MC/ Is it K. Dot? Is it Aubrey? Or me?/ We the big three like we started a league, but right now, I feel like Muhammad Ali.” In response, Lamar hopped on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That” to proclaim himself to be in a league of his own. “Yeah, get up with me, f–k sneak dissing/ ‘First Person Shooter,’ I hope they came with three switches,” he rapped. After two weeks of silence, Cole finally responded with “7 Minute Drill,” but has since apologized for doing so and revealed he wants to take the track off streaming services.
Drake Celebrates His Awards Success
While Drake has kept his responses to vague Instagram captions, fans think an official response to Lamar is on the way. He recently shared a picture of his notebook on his Instagram Story alongside the Larry O’Brien trophy. Be on the lookout for further updates on Drake and Kendrick Lamar on HotNewHipHop.
Drake and Taylor Swift are two of the most dominant artists for the generation, maybe even of all time. Their albums, singles, and tours are almost always a global success. All we need to do is go back to when both of them dropped their most recent records. The first of the two to drop this year was Taylor with her redux of her 2010 record, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version). Just a couple of months later, she redid one of her most popular LPs, 1989, as well. It has been out for less than a month, and three songs are in the top five on her Spotify account.
Then, we shift our focus over to The Boy. It seems every record is highly anticipated. That was the case with For All The Dogs. The same thing applies to the Canadian rapper’s top five. “IDGAF” with Yeat, “First Person Shooter” featuring J. Cole,” and “Rich Baby Daddy” alongside SZA and Sexyy Red, are hot right now. In fact, the first two tracks were topping the Billboard Hot 100, nabbing Cole’s first number one song.
Now, both megastars can revel in more awards and records. The Billboard Music Awards took place last night (November 19) and Taylor made more history. After winning 10 out of her 20 nominations, she is now in lockstep with Drake. Both are now at a whopping 39 awards. Taylor took the time to thank her Swifties for the honors. According to Billboard, here is some of her speech. “I feel like the luckiest person in the world to have you in my corner and caring about the music that I make. So thank you — thank you, thank you, thank you 10 million times — for this.”
What are your initial thoughts on Drake and Taylor Swift now being tied with each other for the most Billboard Music Awards? Does this solidify Taylor as the greatest pop artist of all time, or just this generation? Whose music do you enjoy more? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. With that in mind, be sure to leave all of your hottest takes in the comments section below. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest breaking news around Drake and Taylor Swift. Furthermore, stay with us for everything else going on around the music world.
For the first time in her career, Nicki Minaj took home the Top Female Rap Artist trophy at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday (November 19). Moreover, the organization created this category in 2018, and she previously took home the general Top Rap Artist accolade back in 2013. As such, it’s quite nice to see the Trinidadian MC receive this specific honor five years after the award’s inception. Another big winner from this ceremony was her Young Money partner Drake, who won five awards and swept many of the rap categories. In her video accepting the award, she thanked the ever-loyal and ever-present Barbz for their constant support and championing of her.
“Thank you to the Billboard Music Awards for presenting me with the best female rap award of 2023,” Nicki Minaj stated in a video. “Barbz, you are amazing. I appreciate you so much. And I can’t wait to share Pink Friday 2 with you on my birthday, December 8,” she concluded, blowing a kiss to the camera. The new album is closer than ever, and the die-hards couldn’t be more excited for this next long-awaited step in one of the most influential and impactful careers in all of hip-hop.
However, that’s not the only thing that the 40-year-old is incredibly excited about when it comes to new releases. She recently gave a shoutout to Sexyy Red, expressing her anticipation for her deluxe version of her breakout project, Hood Hottest Princess. In fact, previous interactions hinted at the St. Louis MC even picking up one of Nicki Minaj’s scrapped tracks for herself. With Pink Friday 2 right around the corner, fans are also hoping that we’ll get some great features, and hearing a “Skee yee!” on a PF2 beat would be electrifying.
Meanwhile, she also revealed new cover art for her highly anticipated studio offering, adding on to various others. This rollout has been very packed with content, extra material for context, and a whole lot of Internet discussion. Finally, with this award in mind, we can finally start getting ready to see its fulfillment. For more news and the latest updates on Nicki Minaj, check back in with HNHH.
The 2023 Billboard Music Awards went down on Sunday (November 19), and had a lot of big winners. Taylor Swift and Morgan Gallen were among the most awarded musicians of the night, but what’s a top dog conversation without the 6 Dog- I mean, God? Moreover, Drake won a total of five BBMA trophies for the occasion, pointing to his excellent commercial run over the past few years. Specifically, these awards were Top Rap Album for his 21 S*vage collab Her Loss, Top Rap Song for the project’s opener “Rich Flex,” Top Rap Artist, Top Male Rap Artist, and Top Rap Touring Artist.
Furthermore, this caps off a pretty great 2023 for Drizzy, with the expanded version of his album For All The Dogs coming out just a few days ago as of writing this article. Sure, that promo cycle brought him his fair share of beefs, too. But what’s the industry without a little tussling, especially when you’re at such a high peak of success and polarization? Regardless, congrats to Drake on these awards, and we’re sure that this won’t be the end of his award show run in the next few months.
For example, the Recording Academy nominated him for various Grammy awards after re-entering the submission process. For those unaware, the Toronto superstar hadn’t submitted his work for consideration in a long time, and it’s unclear if this will affect his nominations for the 2024 ceremony in a negative or positive light. Whichever way the wind blows, he might spit a bar or two about it eventually, but we’re sure it won’t faze him too much. After all, Drake basks in constant acclaim; only something really special these days to either hype him up or tick him off.
Meanwhile, Scary Hours 3 is shaping up to sell very well based on first-week projections, so the success will surely keep on rolling in. Do you think that he deserves these dubs or is Billboard not a good enough metric to determine his value? However you may feel, let us know in the comments down below. Also, stick around on HNHH for the latest news and updates on Drake.
Regardless of the constant online debate, for many artists, music metrics are vital to several parts of their creative strategies. This year alone, rap was scrutinized for its difficulty in securing the No. 1 spot on the charts. That was until Lil Uzi Vert, Doja Cat, and Drake dropped new projects. Today (November 19), the 2023 Billboard Music Awards reminded musicians, producers, and fans who dominated the charts throughout the year.
Taylor Swift led the nomination pack, pulling in 20 across different categories, including Top Artist. Meanwhile, SZA and Morgan Wallen trailed close behind with 17 nominations each. Yes, viewers at home are locked in for other aspects of the show, like the performances, but everyone wants to know we secured a trophy.

The year is winding down, but before it does, it is always fun to reflect on what happened thus far. In the world of music (at least on the fans’ end), Apple Music Replay and Spotify Wrapped remind listeners of their favorite albums, EPs, and singles. Likewise, the Billboard Music Awards is all about the collective data. Last month, the complete nomination list was shared. So, who is performing at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards?
Thus far, only four featured performances have been announced. Those entertainers are Bebe Rexha, David Guetta, Peso Pluma, and NewJeans. The organizers revealed that additional performers will be announced on social media leading up to the ceremony.
Based on the stacked nominee lists, fans hope SZA, up for 17 awards, could hit the stage, especially after she reportedly opted out of performing at the 2023 VMAs. The most nominated artist of the evening is Taylor Swift, up in 20 listed categories. Peso Pluma is nominated in six. David Guetta and NewJeans are nominated in five each.
The 2023 Billboard Music Awards ceremony and performances from the evening will be shared across their official social media platforms or seen live on November 19 at 8 p.m. Eastern. Find more information here.
