Drake Makes Rap History As His And Future’s ‘Wait For U’ Becomes His Tenth No. 1 Single

It’s a good time to be Future right now: His new album I Never Liked You just debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart thanks to the biggest week of 2022. Now, Future is on top of the Hot 100, too: On the new chart dated May 14, Future, Drake, and Tems’ “Wait For U” debuts at No. 1.

This is big for Drake, too, as it makes him the first rapper with ten No. 1 songs and one of just a few artists to ever notch that many. He, Janet Jackson, and Stevie Wonder each have ten, Whitney Houston has 11, Madonna and The Supremes have 12, Michael Jackson has 13, Rihanna has 14, Mariah Carey has 19, and The Beatles have 20.

Meanwhile, this latest entry extends a number of records Drake already held: He now has 262 total Hot 100 entries, 147 top-40 entries, 55 top-10 entries, and 40 top-ten debuts, all of which are the most of all time.

It’s not just Drake making history, though, as Future is now just the fifth artist in history to have a song debut at No. 1 on the Hot 100 and an album premiere on top of the Billboard 200 in the same week.

Future also has a few other songs in the top ten: “Puffin On Zootiez” is No. 4, “712PM” is No. 8, and “I’m Dat N****” is No. 10. All songs from the standard edition of I Never Liked You are actually on the Hot 100 this week, bringing Future’s career total to 149 songs to ever appear on the chart. That moves him to fifth all time, behind Taylor Swift (16), Lil Wayne (180), Glee (262), and Drake (262).

Doja Cat Tops Billboard #Artist100 Chart For First Time

Doja Cat is topping the Billboard Artist 100 chart for the first time in her career. That is due to her five charting singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and the continuing success of her “Planet Her” album.

The Weeknd assisted single “You Right,” sits in the middle at forty-three, while “Woman” recently peaked at seventh place.

“Need to Know” maintains the nineteenth spot, with the club anthem “Freaky Deaky” featuring LA native Tyga holding onto numero fifty-four. “Get Into It (Yuh)” rounds out the last spot for Doja Cat at seventy-three.

The album itself currently resides in sixth place on Billboard 200 album chart.

Pusha T Thanks His Late Parents While Celebrating ‘It’s Almost Dry,’ His First No. 1 Album

Pusha T took to Instagram this past Sunday evening to celebrate as his latest album, It’s Almost Dry, earned the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. Over audio of the track “Let The Smokers Shine The Coupes,” the 44-year-old posted a moving graphic displaying the album’s accomplishments with various photos of himself in the background. In the caption, he started, “We all can’t be number 1 at the same time, this week it’s mine… [sunglasses emoji].”

He also thanked and tagged executive producers Pharrell and Kanye West; manager Steven Victor and his staff; Tunji Balogun and the entire Def Jam label; featured artists such as Jay-Z, Kid Cudi, Lil Uzi Vert, and many more who played a part in his fourth solo album. Pusha also shouted out his wife Virginia Thornton, son Nigel Brixx Thornton, and paid homage to his late parents.

This marks the Virginia rapper’s first No. 1 album after over twenty years in the game, starting as one half of the duo Clipse alongside Malice (formerly known as No Malice, also featured on It’s Almost Dry) before going solo. It’s Almost Dry debuted with 55,000 album units sold, 45,500 of which are streaming equivalent album units in addition to 9,000 pure sales.

Prior to It’s Almost Dry, his 2018 LP Daytona earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album, and Pusha was also featured on West’s “Mercy,” nominated for Best Rap Song in 2013.

Lil Baby Earns His 100th Song On The Hot 100 Chart, Which Only A Few Artists Have Ever Done

Jack Harlow is the toast of this week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart: It was revealed yesterday that “First Class” debuted in the No. 1 spot, making it the second chart-topper of his career so far. That said, if you peek a bit past the top 10 entries of the current chart, it looks like Harlow’s No. 1 may not actually be the week’s biggest accomplishment.

Lil Baby debuted two songs on the Hot 100 this week: “Right On” at No. 13 and “In A Minute” at No. 14. That in itself is nice but doesn’t seem like an especially huge deal. Looking at the big picture, though, it actually is, as those songs are Baby’s 99th and 100th to appear on the chart.

This feat puts Baby in rare territory, as only a handful of artists (12, counting him) have ever landed 100 or more songs on the Hot 100 in their career: Drake (who has 260 entries on the chart), Glee (207), Lil Wayne (180), Taylor Swift (166), Kanye West (135), Future (132), Nicki Minaj (123), Elvis Presley (109), Chris Brown (107), Jay-Z (104), Justin Bieber (103), and now, Lil Baby (100).

Also worth noting is how early in his career Baby reached 100 entries: His first single was only just released in 2017. The next “youngest” (in terms of when their first single was released) artist on the list is Future, whose debut single arrived in 2011. He’s actually the youngest (in terms of actual age) solo artist to do it, too, but just barely: When Bieber got his 100th Hot 100 song on July 20, 2021, he was 27 years, 4 months, and 19 days old, which was the record at the time. When Baby did it yesterday, he was 27 years, 4 months, and 15 days old, a mere four days younger than Bieber was.

Jack Harlow Tops The Hot 100 As ‘First Class’ Debuts At No. 1 On The ‘Billboard’ Chart

Jack Harlow’s ascent has been front and center of the music world as of late and now he has just cemented it with his first solo No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100. Harlow’s latest single, “First Class,” debuted at No. 1 on this week’s chart (dated April 23), unseating Harry Styles’ short-lived run at the top with “As It Was.”

Harlow has technically had a song claim the top spot on the Hot 100 before, because he was featured on Lil Nas X’s smash hit “Industry Baby,” but this is a different animal for sure. Before “First Class” topped the chart, Harlow’s previous solo high was at No. 2 for “Whats Poppin” in 2020. Harlow seems pretty pleased with himself today though, tweeting out “How does it taste?” along with an image of Billboard’s official announcement.

Styles’ “As It Was” drops a spot to No. 2 this week, with “Heat Waves” by Glass Animals coming in at No. 3. Latto’s “Big Energy” drops down to No. 4 while”Enemy” by Imagine Dragons featuring JID rounds out the Top 5.

This was also the second No. 1 ever for Harlow’s producer Rogét Chahayed, who was also behind the boards for Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode.” Chahayed is part of the production squad for “Nail Tech” as well, the other single off of Harlow’s upcoming album, Come Home The Kids Miss You, which is due out on May 6th.

Foo Fighters Climb Multiple ‘Billboard’ Charts After Taylor Hawkins’ Death

As music fans know by now, longtime Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins died last month. After somebody passes away, their work usually receives some renewed attention. Now Billboard reveals this has indeed happened with Foo Fighters on the latest Billboard charts.

The band’s Greatest Hits compilation rose from No. 8 to the very top of the Top Hard Rock Albums chart, its first time at No. 1 since it debuted there in November 2009. It also rose from No. 24 to No. 2 on the Top Rock Albums chart (a new peak) and up from No. 147 all the way to No. 18 on the Billboard 200 chart.

“Everlong,” one of the band’s signature songs, also re-entered the Hot Hard Rock Songs chart at No. 1, topping the chart (which launched in 2020) for the first time. It’s worth noting Hawkins doesn’t actually drum on the album version of the song since he joined the band after it was recorded, although he does appear in the track’s video.

Those chart are all dated April 9 and reflect the tracking week from March 25 to 31, meaning the represent the days following Hawkins’ March 25 death.

This comes shortly after Hawkins won some posthumous Grammys with Foo Fighters, as the band picked up the awards for Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song, and Best Rock Performance last weekend.

The Inaugural ‘Billboard’ Afrobeats Chart Is Dominated By Justin Bieber And Ed Sheeran

Last week, Billboard announced they were partnering with Afro Nation on the new US Afrobeats Songs chart, which “ranks the 50 most popular Afrobeats songs in the country based on a weighted formula incorporating official streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of leading audio and video music services, plus download sales from top music retailers.” The inaugural edition of the chart launched today and dominating the top spots are some big names not traditionally/primarily associated with Afrobeats music.

Three of the top five spots on the April 2-dated chart are occupied by songs featuring Ed Sheeran or Justin Bieber: CKay’s “Love Nwantiti (Ah Ah Ah)” is No. 1, Fireboy DML and Sheeran’s “Peru” is No. 2, Wizkid’s Bieber- and Tems-featuring “Peru” is No. 3, Omah Lay’s Bieber-featuring “Attention” is No. 4, and Tems’ “Free Mind” is No. 5.

Looking at the full top 50, Tems is the clear leader overall with eight entries, followed by Wizkid’s six, Burna Boy’s five, Rema’s four, and Davido’s three.

When the chart was announced last week, Afro Nation founder, co-head of UTA London, and Event Horizon founder Obi Asika said, “The last decade has seen Afrobeats explode into a worldwide phenomenon, influencing culture and fashion across the globe and I am humbled to have made a contribution to growing the genre alongside many talented, passionate people. There is still so much more potential within the scene and the community that has grown around it and I believe it is vital that with Billboard we now have a US chart that reflects this growth and provides a platform for emerging artists from every continent to showcase their talent to new audiences.”

Kanye West Is Pumped That ‘Donda 2’ Isn’t Eligible For ‘Billboard’ Chart Placement: ‘Big Win’

Earlier this week, Billboard reported that Kanye West’s new album Donda 2 is not currently eligible to appear on their charts. So, while Ye’s past nine solo albums have topped the Billboard 200, Donda 2, at least for the time being, won’t even get the chance to. Billboard explained, “[T]he album is being sold with a device that can be used for other means besides the playing of the album. As such, the Stem [Player]/Donda package would fall within Billboard‘s latest merch bundle policy, where albums sold with merchandise are not chart-eligible.”

Some may see that as a bad thing, but West, who has long had a unique perspective, does not.

In fact, he celebrated the news on Instagram yesterday. Sharing a screenshot of a post about Donda 2‘s chart ineligibility, Ye wrote, “Big win for the kid We can no longer be counted or judged We won we won we won we won We make my own systems We set our own value aaaand yesterdays price is not todays price baaaaabeeeee!!!!!”

Meanwhile, Ye is fresh off yesterday’s release of another new video for “Eazy” which, like the previous “Eazy” video, depicts Pete Davidson getting beaten up.

‘Encanto’ Highlight ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ Continues To Dominate, Staying At No. 1 For A Fifth Week

While it mostly traditional pop or hip-hop songs that hang out near the top of the charts, things have been different lately as standout Encanto hit “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” has enjoyed a sustained run atop the Billboard Hot 100. It spent a fourth frame at No. 1 last week, and now it once again occupies that spot for a fifth time on the new chart dated March 5.

Billboard notes the song’s success this week is due to a significant uptick in radio airplay impressions (7.9 million of them, a 23-percent increase from the previous week) despite declines in streams and downloads.

A fifth week on top extends the song’s record for most weeks at No. 1 for a song from a Disney movie. In fact, it now has more weeks at No. 1 than the next two-biggest Disney songs combined: Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart, Sting’s “All For Love” from The Three Musketeers spent three weeks at No. 1 while “A Whole New World” from Aladdin logged a week on top.

Meanwhile, Gayle is having a moment, as her viral hit “ABCDEFU” has hit a new high on the Hot 100, rising from No. 4 last week to No. 3 today.

Classic Eminem And Dr. Dre Albums Are Back In The Top 10 After The Super Bowl Halftime Show

This year’s hip-hop-focused Super Bowl Halftime Show — featuring Dr. Dre, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, and 50 Cent — was generally well-received. It also managed to renew interest in some of the performers’ music, as the new Billboard 200 chart indicates: On the chart dated February 26 (which accounts for listening activity from February 11 to 17, while the Super Bowl was on the 13th), albums by Eminem and Dr. Dre have returned to the top 10 for the first time in years.

Eminem’s Curtain Call: The Hits (a former No. 1 on the chart) had a major rise, as it ascended to No. 8 this week, up from No. 126 the previous week. That’s thanks to about 31,000 equivalent album units earned, an increase of 256 percent. Meanwhile, Dr. Dre’s 2001 rose from No. 108 to No. 9 with about 30,500 units (a 220-percent increase). Its previous peak was at No. 2 on the chart dated December 4, 1999.

This is the first time Curtain Call has found itself in the top 10 since the chart dated March 11, 2006, when it was No. 8. The last time 2001 was in the top 10 was on the May 13, 2000, when it ranked No. 9.

Those albums were well-represented during the halftime show: Eminem performed “Lose Yourself,” while three 2001 songs — “The Next Episode,” “Forgot About Dre,” and “Still D.R.E.,” made the setlist.

Elsewhere on the chart, the smash hit Encanto soundtrack is once again No. 1, for a sixth total week. That ties it with Adele’s 30 for the third-most weeks spent at No. 1 in the last five years (since January 2017). Ahead of those LPs are Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album (ten weeks) and Taylor Swift’s Folklore (eight weeks).
