Big Sean has joined the wave of American rappers collaborating with East Asian stars, teaming up with J-pop boy band One Or Eight for a remix to “Kawasaki,” a thumping, Jersey Club influenced party anthem. In the video, the boys naturally highlight the titular motorbike brand, speeding down highways and showing off some dynamic choreo (as well as their hard-won abs). The track was originally released in June without Sean’s verse via a performance video (watch it here), but after fans demanded an official release, One or Eight complied, adding Sean’s verse for the cherry on top.
Hip-hop has always been global, but over the last couple of years, America’s rap stars have really sought to bridge the gaps between hip-hop internationally and stateside. Earlier this year, Megan Thee Stallion scored a pair of hits with Japanese star Yuki Chiba on “Mamushi” and Korean rapper RM on “Neva Play.” This week, she also joined forces with rising K-pop girl group TWICE to contribute a verse to their new EP’s title track, “Strategy.” Rap’s collabs haven’t been limited to just East Asia, either; also this week, ASAP Rocky added a fiery verse to buzzy viral hit “Big Dawgs” from Indian breakout Hunumankind.

In “One Man Can Change The World,” from Big Sean‘s 2015 album Dark Sky Paradise, the Detroit rapper pays tribute to his grandmother for becoming “a female black captain” in the military, “when being Black you had to extra-extra try.” As it turns out Netflix and Tyler Perry have made a movie about the historical Women’s Army Corps battalion in which his grandmother served. The Six Triple Eight tells the story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only predominantly Black battalion to go overseas in World War II.
So, it’s only right Sean took his mom Myra to the premiere, as noted by Netflix’s Twitter account:
Big Sean's grandmother served in The Six Triple Eight in real life — he brought his mom to the film's premiere to commemorate her service!
The Uproxx cover star called his mother his biggest supporter in his interview for the feature with our own Elliott Wilson, as well as during the album’s rollout. ““I appreciate my mom for being that guardian angel always giving me that advice,” he told his Instagram followers during a livestream. “She really talked me through it for real. Like I said, I haven’t been sleeping a lot. I been giving this sh*t my all. I’m burned the f*ck out. I’m tired. I do do this sh*t for the people that f*ck with me. I’m excited. That’s one thing my mom said, ‘Get excited! Drop — Your album is fire!’ Everyone around me keep saying that.”
J Cole has done an exemplary job of getting his legacy in order. The rapper has been recounting his mixtapes and albums via the podcast Inevitable. Cole has treated fans to previews of unreleased songs, but the most compelling piece of information from the latest episode has to do with a project that never materialized. J Cole told listeners that he was in a creative groove with Meek Mill and Big Sean during the sessions for 2013’s Born Sinner. Such a groove, in fact, that he considered dropping a collaborative EP.
This was an astonishing revelation. J Cole had never mentioned plans for a hypothetical EP prior to the podcast, which makes it sound like a what if scenario from a blog era fan. It turns out that the EP nearly came to fruition, though, as all three artists were collaborating with each other throughout 2012-13. J Cole appeared on “24K of Gold” from Big Sean’s 2012 mixtape Detroit. Sean appeared on “Burn” from Meek Mill’s 2012 mixtape, Dreamchasers 2. The latter collab is especially notable, after listening to the Inevitable podcast episode.
J Cole told listeners that he was originally supposed to be on “Burn” alongside Sean and Meek. Things didn’t work out, and the song would up with the lone Sean feature. Cole was working on Born Sinner at the same time Detroit and Dreamchasers 2 were being made. The rapper claims that all three stars linked up at the home of No ID. The producer worked with Big Sean and J Cole numerous times over the years. It stands to reason he would have been involved in the collab EP. In the same podcast episode, J Cole admitted that he was pushed to hone his craft further by the albums that his peers were dropping at the time.
Kendrick Lamar’s debut album was chief among these. “When ‘Kendrick’s] album dropped, the journey got harder, the mountain got steeper,” Cole explained. “It was a feeling of surpassment… It was a clear feeling that he did exactly what I wanted to do [with The Sideline Story].” Cole’s candor continues to be one of the best parts of the Inevitable podcast. Especially when it comes to revelations about what could have been.
Jhene Aiko and Big Sean are one of the most low key celebrity couples of their generation. Both have amassed incredible success in the music industry, while at the same maintaining a private life with their son. It’s an ideal set up. That said, Aiko and Sean are still prone to gossip. The former was recently seen stepping out with a ring on her finger, which led to widespread speculation about her romantic status. It was suspected that Big Sean had proposed to the singer. Jhene Aiko decided to hop on Twitter to clarify what was going on, though.
A fan posted a TikTok of Jhene Aiko and Big Sean out on the town. A ring can clearly be spotted on her hand, which delighted fans. “Bullying works,” the fan wrote above the TikTok. The singer commented in a matter of minutes, however, to clarify the backstory of the ring. “The ring is from my stylist,” she stated. “It only fit on that finger. The more you know.” Jhene Aiko and Big Sean have been dating for eight years, which has led many fans to question why they aren’t already married. Sean actually spoke on the matter during the promotion of his last album, Better Me Than You.
The rapper gave fans a glimpse into his personal life during Charlamagne tha God’s Out of Context podcast. Big Sean was asked whether he and Jhene Aiko had secretly tied the knot under fans’ noses, but he made it clear that no such conspiracy exists. “[No] secret industry marriage,” Sean explained to fans. He did, however, provide some context as to the current state of his relationship with Aiko. “It’s a little personal, you know what I mean,” he admitted. “But just like to be real with you, just like any people who have dealt with love, we’ve had our ups and downs, you know what I’m saying? And I think it’s still finding the right navigation through it all.”
He assured the fans that he wants to marry Jhene Aiko, but that he’s not ready to take that step in his life. “I don’t like putting our personal business out there like that,” he added. “But there’s a lot of work that needs to be done.” Big Sean is, however, ready to collaborate with the mother of his child again. He told Complex that he wants to reunite with Jhene Aiko for a second TWENTY88 album. The first album dropped in 2016, and was warmly received by fans and critics.
Multi-platinum artist and GRAMMY-nominated rapper Big Sean has released the highly anticipated music video for “It Is What It Is,” featuring Gunna. The track is from Sean’s critically acclaimed sixth studio album Better Me Than You (Def Jam Recordings).
Directed by Diego Cruz, the video features Big Sean and Gunna performing against various urban landscapes in Los Angeles, delivering bold lyrics like, “Face all on the front page, I don’t give a f—- about no backlash / I’ve been backstabbed and laughed at / We gon’ see who gets the f—-’ last laugh.”
“It Is What It Is” is the seventh track on Better Me Than You, an album that takes listeners on a 21-track journey through themes of self-exploration, responsibility, and personal growth. The project showcases Big Sean’s lyrical depth while embracing the complexity and joy of the human experience.
Better Me Than You has received critical acclaim for its raw honesty and introspective storytelling, and the new video adds a visual dimension to the album’s standout track, blending striking visuals with Sean and Gunna’s commanding performances.
The video is now available on all major platforms, adding another layer to the buzz surrounding Better Me Than You and its ongoing impact on fans and the music scene.
The goal for Big Sean’s latest album Better Me Than Youin our eyes was to promote maturity and personal growth. Overall, the project mostly succeeded in that regard outside of a few detours in the tracklist. In terms of the quality, Sean Don definitely had some flashes of pure genius, but too many times did he revert back to some things that hold him back. Some of those drawbacks included sleepier performances and some awkward singing. All in all, though, we are happy to see the Detroit native back in action and there are still a few tracks that we go back to. One of those is Big Sean’s first-ever collaboration with Gunna, “It Is What It Is.” This seems to be a favorite for most that checked out this tape and it’s easy to see why.
Sean and Gunna absolutely glide over Turbo’s Latin-esque trap blend. The topic at hand is substantial enough to keep your interest as the successful MCs remember their journeys to fame and flex on the doubters. Both drop some gems, with one being, “No time to wait, I’ma hit in this Scat, hope they payin’ attention / They try turn their back on the realest / Ain’t work, what the word on me now when you fearless?” It’s pretty evident that this track has tremendous replay value and Sean recognizes that as the visual for “It Is What It Is” is here now. Given that him and Gunna are rapping with that blue-collar mentality, them choosing a decrepit-looking freight train station was a smart move. It’s a lowkey video, but it really needs nothing more. Check it out with the link below.
In Big Sean‘s new video for “It Is What It Is,” Sean teams up with Gunna to dispel any doubts in their rap credentials. The treatment is relatively straightforward, consisting mostly of performance shots of the two rappers leaning against an SUV. They also flex in a train yard, while Sean delivers his verse hanging out the window of the SUV.
Big Sean and Gunna are both on the comeback trail after career setbacks; while Gunna infamously drew criticism for accepting a plea deal from the Georgia District Attorney’s office, Sean has dealt with hits to his own reputation from skeptics who don’t believe he lives up to his billing as one of rap’s upper echelon entertainers.
Meanwhile, Gunna is fresh off the release of his own bounce back album, One Of Wun, and its supporting tour, the Bittersweet Tour, both of which are helping him find his way back into rap fans’ good graces.
