Big Sean & Charlamagne Tha God “Out Of Context” Interview: 5 Biggest Takeaways

Big Sean SZN is officially underway. The rapper’s unveiled a handful of singles since the top of the year in anticipation of his forthcoming album, Better You Than Me, due out on August 9th. This morning, he unveiled the new single, “One Up” and its music video. This came after the release of “Yes,” “Precision,” and “Shut Up,” along with his stellar guest verses on Eminem’s “Tobey” and DJ Premier’s “Ya Don’t Stop” alongside Lil Wayne. Sean Don has been getting busy. After a four-year wait, his upcoming project sounds like it could be his best to date.

Within that four-year window, much has happened in his life, including the birth of his first son, who appears in the “One Up” video. Sean sat down with Charlamagne Tha God for the latest episode of Out Of Context, where they addressed everything from his relationship with Ye and G.O.O.D Music to nearly giving up on rap. Below, we’ve rounded up five of the biggest takeaways.

Kendrick “Apology”

In September 2023, a leaked version of Kendrick Lamar’s “ELEMENT” surfaced online containing direct shots at Big Sean. In the song, Kendrick raps, “Big Sean keep sneak dissin’, I let it slide/ I think his false confidence got him inspired/ I can’t make them respect you baby, it’s not my job/ You’re finally famous for who you date, not how you rhyme/ Cute ass raps, get your puberty up/ Then make you a classic album before you come at us/ Drake and Meek Mill beef might got you gassed up/ But I’m a whole ‘nother beast, I’d really f*ck you up.”

Sean explained that Joe Budden primarily pushed this narrative that the two had beef. However, prior to the leak coming out, Sean was assured by Dave Free and Punch that there was no smoke. Moreover, Big Sean said his verse on “Deep Reverence” ft. Nipsey Hussle was inspired by a text exchange he had with Kendrick Lamar, who he claimed apologized for the misunderstanding. It should be noted that he didn’t think Kendrick would’ve done him worse than Drake. Ultimately, he felt he was ready for whatever came with a potential feud.

Ye & G.O.O.D Music

Big Sean expressed gratitude for the opportunity he had with G.O.O.D Music. First, he said that the $6 million discrepancy has been handled. However, he said he took a cut compared to what he was owed for the sake of avoiding courtrooms. “With the deal I signed, he made more money off of my music than me,” he explained, adding that he wasn’t necessarily bothered by that. However, he audited Def Jam for the money and later learned that the money was actually sent to G.O.O.D Music.

“He said what he said [on Drink Champs]. I’m not into gossip and stuff but he said what he said and it made me realize that I couldn’t take all of what he was saying serious on that Drink Champs,” Sean told Charlamagne. “Very performative… that’s what I’m not. That’s what he’s good at.” Kanye allegedly tried to make sure that there was a picture of the two taken to squash the narrative.

But at the root of their issues is Drake, apparently. “I think he was just pissed because he thought I chose Drake over him. I only bring that up because he brought that up to somebody who told me something,” he said. Sean explained that Ye demanded a verse on “Blessings,” which the Detroit MC helped him write. However, he gave him a deadline, and Ye basically ignored that. “For some reason, he thinks – Drake didn’t even want him on that song but I was like, ‘I’m putting Ye on the song anyway because Ye put me on. If he wants to be on the song, he’s going to be on the song,” Sean explained. Apparently, even though Ye failed to pull through, he felt like Sean was not being loyal.

Coming To Terms With The Big 3

In another Kendrick-related excerpt, Big Sean explained that he understood why he’s not mentioned in the same vein as his peers, namely Kendrick Lamar, Drake, and J. Cole. “I hear my name every time people talk about this Big 3 stuff,” he said. Then, he acknowledged that his inconsistency as an artist played a significant role in people’s perception of him. “My consistency is where I lack. I say that in that too. It’s like, I haven’t put out music in four years, bro, essentially, I haven’t put a project out. I can’t expect to be in that conversation when I haven’t been consistency feeding hip-hop, feeding the fans.”

However, that might change in the future. Sean said that he feels like he has the potential to release more music while keeping it on “God’s time.” “I think the way my life is going, that’s one of my priorities is to put more music out with meaning, though,” he said, “I do feel like when it comes to rapping abilities, I have no limit on my rapping abilities… I can hang with anybody on any song… I’ve proven that with all of them. He added, “Even with ‘Control,’ the next song we did, I made sure I had a better verse on ‘Holy Key.’”

Nearly Giving Up On Rap Dreams

An emotional point in the interview came when Sean started reflecting on his high school years where he wrote down a list of labels that he wanted to sign to, which included G.O.O.D Music at #1. “It was one of them omens. There’s just one little thing I needed to realize ‘Nah, I can do this, bro. I met Ye and rapped for him. He said he wanted to sign me.’ I just manifested and visualized the paperwork coming in all this time. In that one year, I was depressed, I just wanted to give up bad,” he said, explaining that he felt that he was “done.”

His grandma encouraged him to apply for community college as a backup plan. “I remember my mom being like, ‘What are you doing?’ And it was… it was a moment, dawg,” he added as he tried to fight back tears, explaining that she pushed him to keep following his dreams. “I’m just thankful I had these guardian angels in my life, like my mom, just coming in the form of anything – a book.”

Big Sean Discusses The Possibility Of Marrying Jhene Aiko

Wedding bells in the future?

After being together for so long, many have wondered whether Big Sean and Jhene Aiko will ever get hitched. Sean denied that they had a secret industry wedding before divulging his thoughts on marriage in general. With the two sharing a child together and working together as a musical duo, there’s another layer of complexity to their relationship. “We’ve had our ups and downs and I think it’s still finding the right navigation through it all. I don’t know if like – to me, marriage symbolizes the best relationship,” he explained. “I feel like having a relationship is first and foremost and marriage is a byproduct of that.”

Sean added that the pressure of getting married creates a level of fear in the decision, especially with the divorce rates. While he added that they could get married in the future, it’s not necessarily the priority in their lives. “There’s a lot of work that needs to be done, I feel like, in general. We have so many relationships. It’s like being peers, being in a group together, parents, romantic – it’s a crazy connection because no matter what we’re always going to be tied together. No matter what,” he said.

“She and me have to be on the same page. Not to say that we aren’t but I feel like – I can only speak for myself that there needs to be more work done so we could keep going because there’s a lot of focus on our family, there’s a lot of focus on careers and everything and that’s something I feel like has not been the main focus.”

Big Daddy Kane Blames Drake’s Fans For Ruining Hip-Hop Battles

Big Daddy Kane has bulletproof pedigree. He’s one of the most influential and impressive rappers of all time. His beef with MC Shan was legendary and he helped form the Juice Crew. Big Daddy Kane knows the genre better than most people walking the planet, so when he has an opinion, it carries weight. The rapper recently went on The Art of Dialogue to discuss the current state of hip-hop, and he made it very clear that he is not a fan of Drake’s fans.

Big Daddy Kane was asked if he’d been keeping up with Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar, and he said he lost interest. He didn’t lay the blame at the feet of either rapper, but their fanbases. In particular, he was put off by the way Drake’s fans fact-checked Lamar’s bars. “It’s not a competitive thing about who spit the better bars it’s a thing about fact checking to see if this person told the truth,” Kane noted. “If the line is dope and he dissed you, it’s dope man. It’s that simple. He bodied you with what he said.”

Big Daddy Kane Was Initially On Drake’s Side

The veteran rapper noted the differences between when he battled versus the current state of rap battles. Firstly, he admitted to lying about his competitors, as he felt it was all fair game. “In my days of battling people I said stuff that wasn’t true,” he noted. Secondly, he clarified that he didn’t blame either rapper. “Enjoy the music for what it is,” he explained. “If that’s the way the younger generation looks at battles, good for them. It’s not about Kendrick or Drake. Their comments and their views, they make it unenjoyable for me.”

Kane thought both rappers delivered musically. He praised Drake’s “Family Matters” for “saying some sh*t” about Lamar. Then, the fact-checking and ghostwriting allegations soured him on it. “I’ll go back and listen to Bizzy Bee and Kool Moe Dee,” he quipped. “You can have this sh*t.”

The most interesting part about Kane’s stance on Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar is that his favorite “Big Three” rapper stepped away from the battle. He told The Art of Dialogue that J. Cole is the best rapper of his generation. “I think he is,” Kane asserted. “Like he’s my personal favorite.”

SOURCE SPORTS: Ice Cube’s Big3 Basketball League Announces Team Coming to Los Angeles

Ice Cube Talks Season Six of The Big 3 and Hip-Hop50

The Big3 basketball league, co-founded by iconic rapper and actor Ice Cube in 2017, continues to expand its footprint by adding a Los Angeles-based team for the upcoming season.

On Friday, the 3-on-3 basketball league announced the sale of the rights to the L.A. team to a consortium of investors led by DCB Sports for a staggering $10 million. This move marks a significant milestone for the league as it solidifies its presence in one of the world’s basketball hotbeds.

Co-founder Ice Cube expressed excitement about the expansion, stating, “We can plant our roots in these cities. It is great to come through with, like, a rolling All-Star event. But if you want to really unlock the fan-base potential, connecting to cities does that.”

The Big3, known for its unique 3-on-3 format featuring former NBA stars and other basketball veterans, has garnered a loyal following since its inception. With games broadcast on CBS and half of non-CBS games domestically streamed on X, the league has leveraged its media partnerships to reach a wider audience. They are growing, and that’s a good thing for the spirit of competition within the already crowded sports media landscape.

Co-founder Jeff Kwatinetz emphasized the league’s commitment to community engagement, stating, “We do things in the cities when we go there… The truth is that you can only do so much, you know, dropping in a city for four days than you can if you have a team rooted in the city.”

Adding an L.A. team is just the beginning of the Big3’s expansion plans. With the 2024 season set to kick off on June 15 in Oakland, the league anticipates announcing three more ownership groups, with Toronto and the U.K. emerging as leading contenders. That would be interesting – the United Kingdom. Not even the NBA or NFL have fully expanded into the UK with actual teams based in that foreign market.

As the Big3 continues to grow and evolve, it remains dedicated to its mission of delivering thrilling basketball action while fostering connections with communities worldwide. Good for you, Cube!

SOURCE SPORTS: Lakers Turned Down Idea of ‘Big 3’ Even As LeBron Pushed to Add Another Star

LeBron James Raps Along to Kendrick Lamar's "Like That" Verse and Drops 40 Points

It may be a little early to think about roster upgrades while the NBA Playoffs get deeper into the postseason, but not if you’re the Los Angeles Lakers. One would think adding a third star alongside King James and Anthony Davis, who showed up in a big way against the Nuggets, makes sense. According to Jovan Buha of The Athletic, that ain’t happening for now.

“Some within the Lakers organization have been hesitant about pursuing a three-star strategy, leaning instead towards bolstering depth,” Buha said on The Athletic NBA Show. Buha also asserted James’ historical support for adding a third star but stressed that recent discussions have been cautious, to say the least.

Since the trade deadline, the road to securing a third star has become more complex. With D’Angelo Russell looking like he may opt for free agency, any potential acquisition would probably require a sign-and-trade involving him alongside other veteran contracts for salary-matching purposes. Complicated is an understatement. This would also devalue the Lakers’ draft-pick flexibility in the future.

And with James’ impending 40th birthday in December and Davis’ history of injuries, the Lakers face a crucial decision. They must balance their focus for an immediate championship contention with the practical plan for a post-LeBron era.

Doja Cat Album Leaks Aren’t Phasing Singer, She Names Pitbull In Her Big 3 Rappers

From 2009 to 2011, Pitbull was one of the dominating voices in the music industry. From “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)” to “Give Me Everything” with Afrojack and Ne-Yo, he never disappoints. If there’s anyone who knows how to get the party going, it’s the Miami-born entertainer. Now, Doja Cat is wondering why people don’t give Pitbull his flowers more often.

On Wednesday (April 3), the California native asked, “HOW is Pitbull not in the big three???????” This prompted her Twitter/X followers to ask who else Doja would rank alongside the Spanish-speaking icon. “Chingy and Baby Bash,” she declared. When someone suggested replacing the former with “Low” hitmaker Flo Rida, the femcee decided to change her list to a top four and add him in too. “Yaaaaass 😍,” Doja enthusiastically responded.

Doja Cat Gives Credit Where Credit Is Due

Elsewhere on Twitter/X, the 28-year-old is growing frustrated with people complaining to her about the deluxe version of Scarlet surfacing online early. “Idk why you guys care so much about leaks,” she replied to one concerned user. “I mean it’s lowkey disrespectful if you set a date and people are dropping it early w/o permission,” a fan explained their stance to Doja.

“No it’s definitely messed up,” she agreed. “‘Cuz I wanted to put it out myself but there’s nothing I can do about it!!” the multi-talent added, keeping a calm head amid the mercury retrograde shenanigans. “That’s just how it’s gonna be, but at least I can just keep being creative and look forward to the awesome things I have coming up!!” Elsewhere, Doja Cat spent a few minutes arguing with people insisting that she cares about her streaming numbers and encouraging stan accounts to think for themselves before getting caught up in anger over things that are out of their control.

Caitlin Clark Offered $5 Million To Join Big 3 League and Still Play in WNBA

Caitlin Clark Drops Logo Three to Break NCAA Women's Scoring Record

Caitlin Clark is positioned to be basketball’s first $5 million woman if she accepts the deal from the Big3 league, a 3-on-3 basketball league owned and operated by Ice Cube.

The iconic West Coast rapper turned business mogul and let the basketball world know he meant business when he spoke about the no-brainer offer to Caitlin Clark.

“Caitlin is a generational athlete who can achieve tremendous success in the BIG3,” he posted on X. He also pointed out that the Big3 had a track record of breaking down barriers with female coaches like Nancy Lieberman and Lisa Leslie.

“With our offer, Caitlin Clark can make history and break down even more barriers for women athletes,” Cube said.

Cube even weighed in on the Big3 being a better alternative to earn a living in the WNBA offseason rather than going overseas. “And they should have more than just one professional option in the US at a time when American pro sports leagues are being infiltrated by autocratic, anti-women regimes such as Qatar,” he said. “Our pathbreaking offer to Caitlin Clark demonstrates that BIG3 now offers another choice for athletes.”

Here’s what the deal basics look like based on sources to TMZ, who know the offer … $5 million to play eight regular-season games and possibly two playoff games! That’s it—10 games for $5 mil, guaranteed.

We’re told Clark would also get “substantial additional compensation” generated from merchandising and sponsorship revenue. What’s even more important is that Big3 would still allow Clark to play in the WNBA, and there would only be two games in scheduling conflict, so that looks like a win all around if she accepts Cube’s deal.

Ice Cube Sends Warning to ‘Gatekeepers’ Against His Big 3 League: “I’ma Go Talk to Everybody’

“I’ma go talk to everybody,” Ice Cube said. “Get a chance to get my message out to the people. Be able to let people hear from me. And you might agree, you might not. But, the important thing is, for me to go on these platforms and say what I feel about what I think.”
