Will Smith 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards Performance Would’ve Happened If Fat Joe Had His Way

Today (October 10), the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards will be airing after filming took place in Atlanta last week. We got a look at what some of our favourite stars wore on the red carpet already, but when it comes to what went down inside, there’s still much to be seen on the small screen this evening. Fat Joe was tapped to host the annual ceremony, and ahead of its premiere, he spoke with PEOPLE about the artist he desperately wanted to see perform, but unfortunately couldn’t secure.

“You know who I didn’t successfully get was Will Smith,” the Terror Squad lyricist confessed, revealing that his hope was to have the actor do a hip-hop 50 tribute. “I was really trying to get Will Smith to come out and do ‘Summer Time’. He’s filming ‘Bad Boys,’ but we tried. We try to pull off a miracle if we can. We try to pull a cloud out of the sky,” Joe additionally noted.

Fat Joe Wanted to See Will Smith Perform “Summertime”

As for what viewers can expect to see, increased confidence from the 53-year-old is on the list. This marks his second year MCing the event, which he’s long been preparing for. “I always think back to being in junior high and doing the talent shows and then Apollo Theater Amateur Night and it all leads to this. And so it’s an honour for me,” Joe revealed. He also shared that we’ll see a total of eight outfit changes throughout the evening in an attempt to keep up with the notoriously stylish women of rap.

He may not have been able to come through for the annual BET Hip Hop Awards, but that doesn’t mean Will Smith isn’t still bringing new contributions to the genre. Just last month he announced that his Class of ’88 podcast will be coming soon to examine the world of rap during his younger years. Read more about that project at the link below, and let us know if you’ll be watching Fat Joe on hosting duty later this evening in the comments.

Charlamagne Tha God Called Birdman To Squash Beef, Radio Host Claims

Charlamagne Tha God told HipHopDX that all it took to end his beef with Birdman was a lengthy phone call. “He’s an OG that I look up to as far as what he’s built, as far as being a mogul. You can’t deny him,” Charlamagne told the outlet at the BET Hip Hop Awards. “[Big Bank] put us on the phone one time and I was able to tell him that [I look up to what he’s done]. It was just mutual respect. That was a fulfilling conversation for me.”

The beef between the two industry icons dates back to 2016. It stemmed from an interview that lasted just a few minutes. Birdman felt that Charlamagne and his radio co-hosts didn’t respect his name and status. Later he would drop a single, “Respek”, that called back to the whole debacle. While the beef went dormant over the years, it never truly went away until now.

Funk Flex Calls Out Charlamagne Over 2001 Sexual Assault Allegations

Meanwhile, Funk Flex recently called out Charlamagne over stories from earlier this year about Charlamagne looking to end the ongoing lawsuit he is facing over 2001 allegations of sexual assault. “UMMMMM? YOU CAUGHT ANOTHER (NEW) LAWSUIT APRIL 21, 2023? I DONT THINK U SETTLED THAT? @cthagod (AND YOU CALLING PEOPLE PATHETIC?) LET YOUR LAWYER KNOW I CAN TALK ABOUT THIS CAUSE VIBE MAG ALREADY DID?” Flex was a little off the mark. The April articles simply spoke about Charlamagne’s intention to end the case, not a new lawsuit that he was facing.

Rape allegations leveled at radio host Charlamagne Tha God have been around for several years. Jessica Reid has long accused Charlamagne of raping her in 2001 when she was 15 years old. In 2018, Reid took her case to the South Carolina Supreme Court. She claimed that Charlamagne had continued to “violate” her on his radio show and social media. While Charlamagne has vehemently and consistently denied the allegations, Reid sued him in late 2022.

Boosie Badazz Offers Words Of Wisdom To Young Rappers

Boosie Badazz recently stopped by the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards, where he was asked to give fellow rappers some words of advice on how they can maintain their longevity. According to Boosie, the formula’s simple. The Louisiana-born performer says that the key to it all is just having talent, and staying alive.

“To maintain your longevity you can’t get killed,” he began. “So I would tell them to stay out them streets, don’t rap beef with dudes, and stay alive. As long as you got talent, as long as you stay alive it’s a chance. I wouldn’t tell ’em just keep making music and being ignorant and trying to be gangsters, you know. I would tell them try to stay alive and your talent’s gonna speak for itself. When you do right by people, everything’s gonna fall into place.” Boosie also adds, “You just can’t cheat.”

Boosie Tells Young Artists To “Stay Alive”

Boosie then described how he didn’t take any kind of shortcut to get to the point he’s at in his career, encouraging others to do the same. “I never rapped about people to get where I’m at,” he explained. “So I would tell them, you know, stay real.” Clearly, the 40-year-old has some good advice. He’s gotten wrapped up in his own fair share of beef in the past, so it’s safe to say he’s got some knowledge on the outcomes it can lead to.

This isn’t the only time Boosie’s tried to make an impact on the younger generation, however. Last month, the performer also reached out to Kamala Harris, claiming he wanted to meet to discuss gun violence. He explained that he thinks young people would be more likely to listen to what he has to say since they look up to him. What do you think of the words of advice Boosie had for young rappers? Boosie Badazz Giddy Over Fat Joe’s BET Hip Hop Awards Praise

Fat Joe hosted the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards in Atlanta earlier this week for the second consecutive year. At one point during the night, the New York icon was sure to give a nod to Boosie Badazz, who was also in attendance. From the looks of things, the shoutout meant a lot to Boosie, who’s had quite the year. The Louisiana native went through legal troubles, public family feuds, beef with other artists, and more.

Boosie took to social media to share his enthusiastic response to the shoutout, explaining how he’d be reciprocating the love throughout the evening. “Fat Joe just gave me a shout out! Fat Joe know what I be going through,” Boosie explains in a clip. “Real n***as do real things. I’m giving Fat Joe all the love tonight! Fat Joe just gave me a shout out!”

Boosie Badazz Reacts To Fat Joe’s Shout Out

Elsewhere in the night, Boosie showed off his ankle monitor on the carpet, posing for photos and reminding everyone that he’s “still outside.” He also went live on Instagram from the crowd, getting rowdy and urging Fat Joe to “put [him] on camera.” It’s unclear whether or not he actually got any air time, but fans can find out when the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards broadcasts on October 10 on BET.

Fat Joe isn’t the only person Boosie has shown love to as of late. He also recently gave Tasha K her flowers for keeping it real, despite her hot take on his pleas to Kamala Harris. He reached out to the Vice President in hopes to help out with gun reform, which she claims was just his attempt to get pardoned for his gun charge. “Man, this lady don’t spare nobody, man,” he told viewers. “It’s comedy bro.” What do you think of Fat Joe giving Boosie Badazz a shoutout at the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards? Do you think Boosie’s response was appropriate? Share your thoughts in the comments section down below, and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates on Fat Joe and Boosie Badazz.

GloRilla Recreates Lisa “Lefteye” Lopes’ Look At The BET Hip-Hop Awards

The 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards are fast approaching. Filming began yesterday on October 3 and they will premier on television on October 10, which is on a Tuesday. Plenty of heavy hitters are being nominated for this year’s show, per usual. Metro Boomin, Nicki Minaj, Drake, 21 Savage, The Alchemist, and plenty of others could be taking home more hardware. We already have seen some wild things going on in Atlanta, with Boosie Badazz proudly displaying his ankle monitor. Another artist who is making the headlines from the event is GloRilla.

Memphis rapper, GloRilla has had a big year overall. She continues to grow her catalog with big features and singles. Her most recent releases can be found on her label’s newest posse album, Gangsta Art 2. Glo has a couple of tracks on the CMG project including one that got some negative backlash from streamer Kai Cenat. The rapper definitely has a unique and deep voice that is shaking up the music industry for years to come. She has been nominated for Best Collaboration, Best Hip-Hop Video, Song Of The Year, and Hip-Hop Album Of The Year. On top of all of these recognitions, she is also turning heads with a throwback fit.

Glo wore a funky all-brown get-up that reminded fans of someone who originated it. Lisa “Lefteye” Lopes donned this look at the 1999 Source Hip-Hop Music Awards. However, instead of keeping her hair straight, Glo added some mini buns. A lot of fans are praising the look in the comments section of the IG post above. “I love when people do tributes to left eye ❤🙏🏽” Another says, “RIP LEFT eye.. 🫡 GLO 🔥💪🏽

Jim Jones Rips Into BET For Not Letting Him Attend Hip Hop Awards

Even though it won’t be put on air until Tuesday (October 4), the BET Hip Hop Awards were last night. As usual, the ceremony brought out some of the biggest names in the industry as awards were doled out for outstanding achievements in the genre. Some big names, however, were conspicuously absent.

Jim Jones was one of such names, and according to the rapper, it wasn’t for lack of trying. He took to Instagram to blast BET for barring him from attending the gathering.

“I was tryin to go to th bet hip hops awards and support my brother @fatjoe and this how a @bet handled me lol,” wrote Jones, captioning a screenshot of BET’s response to his request for attendance. “Thank you for your inquiry!” the organization had said. “At this time, we are unable to accommodate additional audience talent requests. Due to COVID-19 protocols in place, this year’s show and red carpet are reserved for in-show talent, nominees and select participating network partners only.”

Jones wasn’t happy with BET’s excuse. “They still talkin Covid and th cdc says ain’t no more Covid lol,” he wrote.

Jones was trying to attend so that he could support Fat Joe, who is a close friend of his and who was hosting the show. “Lol Dam @BET I thought this was th hip hop award show,” continued Jones. “Somebody tell @fatjoe I tried don’t want him think I ain’t keep my word told him I was comin But BeT says different mayb next time tear tht shit down joe.”

Fat Joe is hosting the event and the I Am Hip Hop Award recipient this year is none other than the “Baddest B*tch” herself, Trina.

In the weeks leading up to the award show, Fat Joe has repeatedly expressed just how honored he is to add his name to the list of hosts.
