Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” Makes Billion-Dollar Herstory

Since the live-action Barbie movie was first announced, the inner child of adults all across the globe has been buzzing with excitement. Amy Schumer was first cast in the prestigious role. After she stepped down, it went to Australian starlet Margot Robbie, who was undoubtedly the perfect choice for the part. Of course, many other women also play the part of Barbie, including Issa Rae and Dua Lipa. As for the male lead, Canadian actor Ryan Gosling covered that flawlessly, even with the internet expressing concern that he was too old.

Greta Gerwig was the mastermind in Barbie‘s director chair, following her work on projects like Little Women and Lady Bird. It was an ambitious project, but thanks to her efforts, the 40-year-old is now the first female filmmaker to join the billion-dollar box office club with their solo work. As TMZ notes, Jennifer Lee and Anna Boden are both already in the category (for Frozen and Captain Marvel respectively), but their co-director status makes Gerwig’s standalone effort marks a noteworthy accolade for her resume.

Barbie is One of a Kind

As for solo female directors who come behind Greta in line, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman brought in a considerably lower $412M during its time in theatres. Following that is Betty Thomas’ Alvin and the Chipmunks ($219M), Catherine Hardwicke’s Twilight ($192M), and Elizabeth Banks’ Pitch Perfect 2 ($184M). There are no clear plans for a Barbie sequel at this time, though Mattel has expressed interest in creating a full cinematic universe with other toys, including Barney, Polly Pocket, and Magic 8 Ball.

Seeing as Barbie brought in over $155M in its opening weekend alone, we’re not surprised to see the pink-filled film continuing to do numbers. Joe Biden Reviews “Oppenheimer” After Seeing Film During Delaware Vacation

President Joe Biden hit up a local theater in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware with the First Lady to catch a public screening of Oppenheimer on August 1. The Bidens are spending the week in the popular vacation destination as part of their official summer getaway. Oppenheimer is the latest from acclaimed director Christopher Nolan. The film tells the story of The Manhattan Project through the lens of lead scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer. The Manhattan Project was the codename for the United States’ development of the first atomic bombs.

Much has been made of the release of Oppenheimer, which came out on the same day as Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. Barbie has absolutely dominated the box office and is expected to surpass $1 billion this week. Meanwhile, Oppenheimer has been able to hold its own. At the time of writing, the film has made over $400 million and made nearly $100 million during its domestic opening. Reportedly, there was a showing of Barbie at the same theater at the same time as the Oppenheimer showing the Bidens attended.

Biden Calls Oppenheimer “Compelling”

In a brief exchange with reporters after the movie, Biden called the film “compelling.” The president kept the impromptu Q&A short. Furthermore, he did not answer any questions about the additional federal indictments former President Donald Trump was handed earlier in the day. However, it’s no surprise that Biden chose Oppenheimer over Barbie. The President has previously expressed a love of historical biopics. In 2005, then-Senator Biden told CBS that his favorite movie was Chariots of Fire. The 1981 Oscar winner follows two British athletes who must choose between athletics and their religion while competing at the 1924 Olympics.

However, the question is now whether Biden will also be taking in Barbie. The ensemble comedy has been widely praised by critics. The film follows “Stereotypical Barbie” (Margot Robbie) as she travels from Barbieland to the real world to seek answers as to why her perfect life is beginning to be a lot less perfect. Furthermore, it currently holds an 88% critics rating and 84% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Perhaps Biden will catch a private screening at the White House. However, it’s nice to see the President supporting a local theater while on vacation.

According to Variety, Barbie‘s ticket sales only declined 43% since its debut, a massive sophomore outing only bested by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Jurassic World, and The Avengers.

“Weekend two proves the outpouring of interest in ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ a week ago was not a fluke,” says Paul Dergarabedian, a senior Comscore analyst. “Both films put up second weekend numbers that would have been considered solid as debuts and reflect two of the best sophomore session holds in box office history.”

The Barbie Album is taking the music world by storm as Spotify users streamed its 19 songs a staggering 52 million times in just the opening weekend after its release. According to Music Industry How To, the track “Barbie World” by Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, and Aqua emerged as the most streamed song from the movie’s official album, accounting for 10.3 million of the total streams. Aqua, in particular, experienced a significant boost in popularity, almost doubling its Spotify following within three weeks.

Lizzo Released The ‘Bad Day’ Version Of Her Song ‘Pink’ From The ‘Barbie’ Soundtrack

On the star-studded Barbie soundtrack, Lizzo opens the collection of songs with “Pink,” an ode to Barbie’s favorite color. While the song has become a fan-favorite on the soundtrack, garnering over 14.2 million loops on TikTok, according to a press release, a different version of the song plays during the movie, in a particularly notable moment.

Without spoiling the movie, a darker version of “Pink” plays in a scene where Margot Robbie’s Barbie character is experiencing an existential crisis. This particular version was not included on Barbie The Album, however it has since been released to streaming services today (July 29), in the form of “Pink (Bad Day).”

Though “Pink (Bad Day)” clocks in at just over a minute long, the song encapsulates a key moment in the movie. We’d share some lyrics, but even those might be spoilers for those who haven’t seen it.

Following the premiere of Barbie last weekend, a special edition of the soundtrack titled Barbie The Album: Best Weekend Ever Edition was released, featuring Ryan Gosling’s cover of Matchbox 20’s “Push” and Brandi Carlile and Caroline Carlile’s cover of Indigo Girls’ “Closer To Fine.”

“Barbie” Soundtrack Could Sell 110k In Its First Week

Everyone is talking about the new Barbie movie since it came out last weekend. The film has been seen by a massive number of people breaking a number of box office records along the way. The franchise isn’t done with impressive sales numbers either. Earlier this week a report came out that one song in particular saw a massive boost in streams once the movie was released. That track was Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s “Barbie World.” The song features a sample of the Aqua Eurodance classic “Barbie Girl.” The song had an impressive debut at number 7 and has stuck around in the Hot 100 ever since. In the newest released charts, it shot back up to number 29. Other singles from the soundtrack like Dua Lipa’s “Dance The Night” and Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” are also in the top 40 of the chart this week.

Unsurprisingly, that means the soundtrack is expected to perform quite well in its first week. The considerable star power of the soundtrack alone is impressive. On top of already mentioned artists, it also features Lizzo, Khalid, The Kid LAROI, Karol G, Sam Smith, and more. With every song on the soundtrack already well over a million streams it’s no surprise that the project is heading for a big debut. Even then, the projected 110k the album could end up doing is high. Its closest competitor this year in terms of soundtrack is Metro Boomin’s feature-packed Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse soundtrack. Despite all of its firepower that album only did 66k in its first week. With 110k units the Barbie soundtrack is expected to debut at number 2 on the Billboard 200 behind K-Pop group New Jeans.

Barbie Soundtrack Set For Big Numbers

Reviews for the Barbie movie have been glowing. Early screenings saw critics calling for Oscar nominations all around. Subsequently, fans have agreed as the film soars up aggregate review sites like Rotten Tomatoes.

The Barbie movie is out today, yet the most exciting part for some might be the release of the soundtrack. From Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” to Charli XCX’s “Speed Drive,” the album is unmatched.

Lizzo’s “Pink” was a highly anticipated track that wasn’t shared as a single, along with songs by Sam Smith and Tame Impala. It has her typically buoyant, extravagant ambiance and her confident vocals: “In pink, goes with everything / Beautiful from head to toe / I’m read’ to go, you know, you know,” she sings. “It’s pink, good enough to drink / We like other colors / But pink just looks so good on us.”

Last month, Lizzo spoke about how Beyoncé has influenced her. “Today was one of those days where I was very angry, very angry at the world,” she said. “Saw a lot of mean sh*t about me on the internet, and I wanted to give up. What Song Does Ken Sing To Barbie In ‘Barbie’?

Lady Bird was a younger generation’s introduction to Dave Matthews Band. Will Greta Gerwig’s new film, Barbie, do the same thing for Matchbox Twenty?

Late in the movie, after Ken (played by Ryan Gosling) takes over Barbie Land and turns Barbie’s Dreamhouse into Ken’s Mojo Dojo Casa House, Barbie (Margot Robbie) hatches a plan with her fellow Barbies to return things to the way they were. (It’s impossible to discuss this movie and not say the word “Barbie” 7,000 times.) The scheme involves having all the Kens serenade their Barbies with an acoustic version of “Push” by Matchbox Twenty.

It may have seemed that Gerwig and co-writer Noah Baumbach were making fun of Rob Thomas & Co. for their post-grunge angsty anthem, which was released when they were still “Matchbox 20” (this is important to me, a guy whose first email address referenced “Back 2 Good”). But that’s not the case.

“I will say there were many notes, many notes sessions on all fronts, but the thing is that anything that have in a movie, any reference — and we reference The Godfather, Matchbox Twenty, Dave Matthews Band — I love all of it,” Gerwig told IndieWire. “I never put anything in a movie I don’t love, and that’s true. I don’t really have use for things that I don’t have affection for, within a movie. That was the core of it.”
