Kali Receives Backlash After Claiming She Was Unfamiliar With Ludacris’ “Area Codes”

In her recent Complex interview, 22-year-old rapper Kali revealed that she didn’t know Ludacris’ 2001 track, “Area Codes.” This took many social media users by surprise, as she’s recently landed herself a spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for her song of the same name. She described coming up with the concept of “Area Codes” organically, claiming that Ludacris’ track had no influence on her song.

“I didn’t even know there was any connection,” she explained. Kali also went on to say, “Like, I never heard the Ludacris song before. So when people asked me that, I truly didn’t know what they were talking about. It was just super organic. When I hear people saying, ‘Oh, this is a Ludacris homage,’ I’m like, ‘Okay, but I really didn’t know anything about it.’ It was just like I literally felt like I got hoes in different area codes.”

After the interview came out, social media users were quick to share their opinons. “Honestly if that Kali girl didn’t realize she was basically quoting Ludacris on that area codes song, then someone else wrote that joint and just ain’t tell her,” one user claimed. “Lmaoooo,” another writes, “I love Kali but come on now, Ludacris’ ‘Area Codes’ was a hit. I refuse to believe that she never heard it in her life.”

Some fans came to the young rapper’s defense, however. One wrote, “Hoes In different area codes is a common phrase Bffr.” The fan also added, “y’all just be mad that new rappers don’t listen to ppl YALL consider to be rap legends. Why Tf would Kali be listening to any and every Georgia rapper? Some ppl just don’t listen to Ludacris that’s…a thing y’all.” Another said, “I HAVE NEVER heard Ludacris song ‘AREA CODES’ they tryna make it seem like Kali soooo wrong for not knowing that wack a*s sh*t. EVERYBODY don’t know every song df.”

Kali Makes It Known She Has Men In Different ‘Area Codes’ With Her New Single

Last year proved fruitful for Atlanta rapper Kali. With the release of her critically-acclaimed EP Toxic Chocolate, as well as landing XXL‘s coveted Freshman List, we knew she was no flash in the pan. Today (April 6), Kali is back with a gender-flipped spin on a Ludacris classic.

On her new single, “Area Codes,” Kali breaks down the roster of the many men waiting to see her when she touches down in their city.

Some of these contenders include “a white boy on my roster” who feeds her “pasta and lobster,” as well as a man “from the trap” who prefers to “stay off the map.”

“I got hoes / In different area codes / Everywhere I go / I call and they drop the lo’,” she raps over a snappy beat on the song’s chorus. Though there’s no direct sample of Ludacris’ “Area Codes,” the song sounds like an empowered version of his early hit, but for a new generation of ladies running the game.

In the accompanying video, she is joined by a flashy clique in a school setting, as she lays down the law, reminding the men that she can’t be tied down.

Kali has already proven she isn’t coming quietly in 2023, beginning the year with singles like “Binliang,” “Maalan,” and “Quake Bird.” On her latest release, “Area Codes,” the rising rap diva is coming with a bold approach, bragging on bar after bar over production by Tate Kobang and YG! Beats. “You know I love me a motherf*ckin’ trick,” she reminds listeners on the intro, before spilling details on the various men in her current line-up of lovers.

“Got a white boy on my roster, he be feeding me pasta and lobster / He just hit me up on Tuesday like ‘What you doing bae? let me take you shoppin,’” she quickly rhymes. “He said “Damn, I’m in your city / But anyway it’s okay, hope you have a good day / I’ma send you about 850.’” Clearly, Kali is all about her cash, and the type of man for her is one who can provide it.

Kali’s “Area Codes” is a Bad Bitch Anthem

On the chorus, the Georgia native confidently sings about having “hoes in different area codes,” warning some women that it “might just be [their] n*gga” who she’s being spoiled by. The new single comes in at just under two and a half minutes, and already, fans are begging Kali to continue sharing releases with a similar vibe in time for Hot Girl Summer.

Last year saw the arrival of her Toxic Chocolate project, including popular titles like “Eat It Up” featuring BIA and “UonU” with Yung Bleu. Kali’s eight-track effort also includes collaborations with Moneybagg Yo, ATL Jacob, and Latto on “MMM MMM (The Remix),” as well as Muni Long on “Chainzzz.” We’re eagerly awaiting a follow-up to that, though it remains unclear when the southern starlet’s next full-length effort will land.

Quotable Lyrics:

Got a n*gga, yeah he from the trap
He lowkey, yeah he stay off the map
Anytime I need some money, he say pull up
‘Cause it gotta be cash
