Eminem just dropped off his latest project The Death Of Slim Shady. At this point in his career, Em has taken a lot of criticism. Overall, there are some who believe his style is outdated. Moreover, there has been a referendum of sorts on his discography. If you ask Gen Z how they feel about his classic albums, they will tell you they aged poorly. While he still has his fair share of fans, it is pretty clear that Em doesn’t get the critical praise and esteem he used to.

A perfect example of this is the current reception to The Death Of Slim Shady. Now that the album has been out for a few days, there are plenty of reviews making their way online. One of the most anticipated was from none other than Anthony Fantano. Below, you can see that he ended up giving the album a simple 5/10. It’s not a great review by any stretch but based on Fantano’s scale, it is considered to be a mediocre and indifferent release.

More specifically, Fantano’s alter ego Cal Chuchesta, who he’s used to make comedy music before.

The track dropped earlier today on YouTube and doesn’t appear to even have a title. It was simply uploaded with the video name “Drake Has 24 Hours To Respond.” The video has already racked up tens of thousands of views and the comments are full of fans cracking jokes about Drake and his recent beefs. The song itself is extremely chaotic and spends much of its intro unveiling various pieces of instrumentation that don’t go together. Fantano has a history with Drake. He’s shared some controversial reviews of albums like Scorpion and Certified Lover Boy where he was very critical of Drizzy stacking his tracklists. Either that, or they wanted to make the best troll artist description they could come up with while taking shots at the Internet’s busiest music nerd. Moreover, on their artist page on the streaming platform under the moniker ¥$, their bio is a bizarre and most likely fake Q&A excerpt that goes over some curious claims, including references to music critic Anthony Fantano of The Needle Drop. Hats off to whichever fan was cheeky enough to include this and do so successfully, or to Ye and Ty Dolla to taking very legitimate criticism of their work (particularly the former’s) with some sense of humor.

We’ll include the whole bio here in case it really is fake and Apple Music takes it down soon. Before that, this is notable because Anthony Fantano called Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign’s Vultures “unreviewable” for its quality and the antisemitic background behind it. That caused an absolute uproar online from Ye stans and melonheads alike. Whether you agree or not, it’s fair to say that things definitely went a little too far in folks’ responses to this.

As stated by the YouTube famous music reviewer Anthony Fantano stated, ‘This song is absolutely amazing and is a shining light in Ye and Ty’s respective catalogues.’” If the backlash didn’t spoil it, he never said this in the first place.

Anthony Fantano Goes To War With Kanye West’s Fanbase After Calling “Vultures” An “Unreviewable” Album

Anthony Fantano is easily one of the most famous music reviewers on the entire planet. However, he is also extremely controversial for this very reason. Giving your opinions can lead to a lot of pushback. Overall, this is especially true when you are reviewing albums from artists who have a cultish fanbase. Kanye West is certainly one of those artists. His diehard fans will do anything he says, and they will twist narratives to make it seem like everyone else is incorrect. They think they have the whole world figured out, but oftentimes, it is just 15-year-olds looking to be entirely too edgy.

Before Fantano even attempted to review Vultures, Ye’s fans ganged up on him and predicted a negative review. The YouTuber listened to the album on a livestream and clearly did not enjoy it. However, instead of giving one of his usual reviews, he dubbed the album “Unreviewable.” In the video below, he makes a compelling case for why this is true. Ultimately, it boils down to Ye’s fans diluting the discourse and being extremely toxic. Fantano knows whatever he says won’t be taken in good faith, so why even bother?

Anthony Fantano Gives Drake Another Strong 5 For “Scary Hours 3”

Earlier this year, Drake dropped one of the biggest rap records of 2023. For All The Dogs arrived with a ton of hype and a ton of high-profile features and sold tons of copies as a result. But while fans seemed to eat the album up, critics were much more mixed on it. Review conglomerate website Metacritic currently lists the album with a score of 53 out of 100 based on 13 critics who reviewed it.

That’s pretty much exactly in line with what the “internet’s busiest music nerd” Anthony Fantano gave the album. In a review posted shortly after the release of the album Fantano shared his thoughts. He took the chance to highlight plenty of tracks he likes including “Slime You Out,” “8am In Charlotte,” “Rich Baby Daddy,” and “First Person Shooter.” But he ultimately concluded that the project was very middle of the road and awarded it a score of Strong 5. Despite claiming that he was going to take a hiatus from releasing new music shortly after the album dropped, he returned with a new EP. But ultimately he gave it the exact same score as the album that preceded it, a Strong 5.

As such, you can imagine that people don’t expect Fantano to be an OVO fan. However, amid a lot of other takes, he actually had a lot of nice things to say about the new album.

For example, Anthony Fantano called Drake’s track “Tried Our Best” a top 10 track in his discography. Calling it “one of his best songs in a long time,” the reviewer called it a beautiful cut. Still, he said there were only a couple of bars that he was lukewarm on, so it’s a bit of a back-handed compliment. Regardless of that, The Needle Drop labeled it a great progression, much to the disbelief of his fanbase in the chat. Maybe that’s not because they disagree, but because the Connecticut native is usually not a fan of the 6 God’s material, especially the slower and smoother offerings.

Anthony Fantano is one of the more well-known names in the world of music critics. Still, that definitely doesn’t mean the public always agrees with his opinion. Just last month he made headlines by scoring Gunna’s surprise a Gift & a Curse album a measly 1/10 on his YouTube channel, The Needle Drop. Later on in June, Fantano gave a listen to hip-hop icon Killer Mike’s MICHAEL LP, which received a 79/100 rating on Metacritic.com shortly after its debut.

“If you’re familiar with Killer Mike, you know he’s no stranger to throwing political views out there. On previous records, I feel like that mostly worked in his favour,” the internet personality told viewers tuning in. “But on MICHAEL, I’m kinda scratching my head because I feel like a lot of it isn’t fully lining up,” Fantano added, ultimately scoring it a 6/10. “Are you 12 years old? Are you literally a 12-year-old boy? If you took these lyrics and you showed them to me and told me they were some kinda MAGA rapper from the internet, I would have to believe you,” he asked Mike during one rant.

The 48-year-old has obviously gotten wind of the slander circulating about his album, and he didn’t hold back when addressing it on Twitter. “People have forgot that Mike is an artist above all and braggadocious rap is part of it. Y’all prefer he rap about drugs?” one Twitter user pondered in response to Fantano’s review.

To this, Mike wrote, “His opinion on life and culture cannot possibly understand.” He went on to say,”[It’s] laughable and shows you the arrogance of the outsider or colonizer. I encourage all to listen and feel something special. #MICHAEL, a truly Black Southern American experience.”
