$NOT Presents His Spacey & Wavy Fourth LP “Viceroy”

$NOT is back with his fourth studio album Viceroy and this time around he is rapping with a restrained presence. However, there are also times where he comes across as evil and maniacal. Or you will hear the Florida MC sound celebratory and happy like on one the promotional tracks, “HILARIOUS”, which features Cochise. Then, as far as the instrumentals go, you are getting your trap fare in a woozier and more lowkey style. You could categorize a fair amount of the beats as plugg if you wanted to. Viceroy is yet another experiment for $NOT but it does not come across as half-baked. Every element feels as if $NOT has been working in this subgenre for decades.

As for where this album falls for the veteran, it comes after his third album, Ethereal which saw its release in 2022. Prior to that, you had two 2020 projects, Beautiful Havoc and – TRAGEDY +. There was some speculation as to what the singles would be for this project, as $NOT put out “CRUEL WORLD” “0%” with ZillaKami, “BULLY” and then the aforementioned “HILARIOUS”. With Viceroy now here, only the latter of the four made the final cut. Listening to this album is quite a hazy experience, and 26-year-old really transports you to the otherworldly soundscape he has created. You feel as if you are in the crib smoking along with him throughout the 17 tracks. Give Viceroy a spin with the links below.

The femcee hails from the St. Louis, Missouri area and burst onto the scene with her debut track no less, “BING BONG”. On “See Us”, BlakeIANA glides over a ChopSquad DJ beat that goes hard on the bass and pianos.

Fetty Wap Reigns Supreme With New Album “King Zoo”

In the ever-evolving kingdom of hip-hop, Fetty Wap asserts his dominance once again with the release of his highly anticipated album, King Zoo. The rap sensation returns with his first album since 2021. The 17-track project, released via 300 Entertainment, showcases his boldest, brightest, and best work to date. As the album opens with the majestic “Interlude (King Zoo Call),” listeners are immediately transported to the royal court of Fetty Wap’s musical empire. The journey continues with “Northern Lights,” a track where Fetty’s voice glides effortlessly over uplifting piano and punchy 808s, delivering a message straight from the heart.

Reflecting on his journey, Fetty gets introspective in “Undeniable,” blending infectious melodies with a vibrant soundscape. The catchy chorus of “Addicted to you like a drug” in “Undeniable” becomes an anthem for those hooked on Fetty’s signature sound. The heat turns up in “Jet Li,” where an incendiary and energetic flow ignites the track, complete with the boast, “It would take you a year to make what I made today.”

Megan Thee Stallion And Big Sean Are Being Sued For Copyright Infringement

A Detroit rap duo is accusing Megan Thee Stallion of copyright infringement, claiming that a song from her 2020 debut Good News copies major elements of their own 2012, including its chorus, tempo, and tune. According to Complex, which acquired the court documents after rumors sprang up about the lawsuit on gossip blogs earlier this week, the lawsuit was filed by Duawn Payne and Harrell James, who go by Go Hard Major and H-Matic, and compares Megan’s track “Go Crazy” with their own song “Go Crazy.”

The lawsuit also names Big Sean, a featured artist on “Go Crazy,” as well as 1501 Certified Entertainment, 300 Entertainment, and Universal Music Publishing. Oddly enough, though, Complex notes that 2 Chainz, who also features on the song, is not named. Here’s the original “Go Crazy,” which you can compare to Megan Thee Stallion’s “Go Crazy” below:

Go Hard Major and H-Matic say they performed their song at multiple nightclubs in Detroit, Big Sean’s hometown, that he would have frequented. They also claim they’ve sold “thousands” of physical copies of the track on CD, creating plenty of opportunities for Sean to access the track. They’re seeking unspecified damages for copyright infringement and say they’ve sent cease and desist letters to both Megan and Sean.

300 Entertainment Posts A Petition To End The Use Of Rap Lyrics In Criminal Trials Like The YSL RICO Case

Last month, Atlanta rappers Young Thug and Gunna were arrested in a racketeering case blaming them and their label, YSL, for gang activity in the Atlanta area. In total, 28 members of YSL were charged with crimes including attempted murder and possession of illegal firearms. However, a point of contention has arisen among those in the rap community: the State’s use of Thug and Gunna’s lyrics as the principal evidence against them.

Prosecutors say that their lyrics mentioning YSL prove their membership in a gang, and under the terms of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, they can be charged as part of a criminal organization, rather than for any specific crime. However, the rappers’ contemporaries have spoken out against the use of lyrics against them, citing the creativity in hip-hop and the artist’s right to free speech. Even rivals such as The Game and YFN Lucci have criticized the prosecution’s strategy, and now, YSL’s parent label, 300 Entertainment is getting involved as well.

300, which was founded in 2012 by Kevin Liles, Lyor Cohen, Roger Gold, and Todd Moscowitz, launched a petition on Change.org calling for the protection of Black art and laws to codify rappers’ freedom of expression. The petition is inspired in part by the success of New York State Bill S7527, nicknamed the “Rap On Trial” law, which would limit the use of lyrics in criminal trials unless prosecutors can prove that they are based in fact and relevant to the case. The state’s Senate passed the bill in May; it must pass the Assembly and be signed by the Governor to be ratified into law.

While the petition doesn’t say exactly what changes its author Liles is seeking, a good start would be the nationalization of a law like S7527, which would ensure that artists nationwide are protected, not just in New York. As noted in the petition, YSL aren’t the only ones who’ve been scooped up by such broad interpretations of the law and their lyrics. And while the RICO law is intended to keep America’s streets safer, it should take more than a hit on the radio to prove someone guilty of a crime.

You can view the petition here.
