5 Must-Hear R&B Albums From 2023 So Far

While hip-hop has only just now produced a No. 1 album over halfway through the year thanks to Lil Uzi Vert, R&B started out on a strong note thanks to SZA’s SOS. The TDE artist’s sophomore effort has spent a total of eight weeks championing the Billboard 200, only being beaten out by country star Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time. Aside from the “Kill Bill” singer’s major success, other favorites in the genre have given us noteworthy new releases over the past months too.

Our annual round-up of the year’s best rap albums so far is primarily male-dominated, with Sexyy Red’s Hood Hottest Princess earning her the only woman on the list. R&B, however, has heard incredible new arrivals from our favorite female vocalists, including Kiana Lede’s highly anticipated follow-up to 2020’s KIKI. Of course, we didn’t totally forget about the guys – two of Canada and Jamaica’s finest also left us impressed with their R&B LPs earlier in 2023. Keep scrolling to see which artists made the cut, and let us know who your personal favorites are in the comments.

Kali Uchis – Red Moon In Venus

Not only did Kali Uchis captivate the world with her sensual Red Moon In Venus LP, but she also passed some major career milestones. The songbird’s third studio album debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 with over 55K, marking her first Top 10 entry on the list. Across 15 titles, Uchis connects with Summer Walker as well as frequent collaborators Omar Apollo, and her boyfriend, Don Toliver.

Red Moon In Venus arrived at the beginning of March, and weeks later the bilingual artist went on to perform several tracks from it at Coachella. Both weekends Uchis had arguably one of the best sets, bringing out guests like Tyler, The Creator, and Toliver. Speaking of the Cactus Jack artist, his girlfriend appeared on his Love Sick album’s “4 Me” single prior to dropping her own project.

“‘Red Moon in Venus’ is a timeless, burning expression of desire, heartbreak, faith, and honesty, reflecting the divine femininity of the moon and Venus,” Uchis previously told Consequence of her work. Aside from her vision and vocal talent, the ethereal starlet also produced the opening song, “In My Garden…” on her own.

Janelle MonaeThe Age of Pleasure

For Janelle Monae, The Age of Pleasure is more than just an album – it’s a sexual revolution. As we saw throughout her long-awaited LP’s rollout, the Kansas native is feeling more confident and carefree than ever before. Her breasts have been a focal point of the genre-bending work, appearing on the digital cover art, vinyl, and in front of thousands of fans at various live performances over the past few months.

The 37-year-old shared “Float” with Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 as her first single, later following it with “Lipstick Lover.” The latter came along with a salacious teaser video that left the internet lusting after Monae like never before, also confirming her first studio album in over five years. Our personal favorite collaboration on the tracklist is “Phenomenal” featuring TDE’s Doechii, though Grace Jones, Nia Long, Amaarae, Sister Nancy, and CKay make appearances as well.

Daniel Caesar – NEVER ENOUGH

Daniel Caesar’s debut album, Freudian, remains a staple in the rotation of many R&B lovers. Unfortunately for the Canadian, his fame was short-lived after he made controversial comments about race during a live stream that ultimately found him facing widespread cancellation. His sophomore effort, CASE STUDY 01, was largely skipped over as a result, even though it features stunning vocal work from Caesar.

By the time he shared his third LP, NEVER ENOUGH earlier in 2023, the embattled artist had thankfully moved back into the public’s good graces. Caesar teased us with singles like “Please Do Not Lean” featuring BADBADNOTGOOD, “Always,” and “Do You Like Me?” all of which only made fans fall more in love with his dreamy voice. Aside from vocals, the 28-year-old also flexed his producer skills alongside little brother Zachary Simmonds, Sir Dylan, Sevn Thomas, Rami, and Raphael Saadiq.

Kiana Lede – Grudges

The most recently released alum to land on our must-listen list of R&B releases so far this year comes from sultry songbird Kiana Lede. Her follow-up to 2020’s KIKI came in the form of Grudges, an undeniably toxic project that’s perfect for anyone who might be struggling with any pent-up resentment toward an old friend. The 26-year-old immediately catches our attention with “Bitter B**ch – INTROlude” and laces in collaborations with Bryson Tiller, Ella Mai, and Khalid throughout the 18-song tracklist.

During an interview with Vibe, Lede gave some insight into the inspiration behind her sophomore album. “‘Grudges’ actually has multiple meanings in this album. Obviously, there’s the [literal one]. I’m a bitter b**ch [who] definitely [has] grudges. I hold them very well. I’m working on it. I’m in therapy,” she admitted.

“So grudges towards relationships, also grudges just in my life. It’s something that I feel like we all constantly have to work on, whether it’s relationships or within ourselves, within the world,” Lede also told the outlet.

Masego – Masego

R&B music is typically most appreciated in the chilly winter months of cuffing season, but when a Masego song comes on, it’s hard not to fantasize about a romantic trip to the tropics at any time of year. It had been nearly two and a half years since his Studying Abroad project arrived when the Jamaican singer delivered his 14-track, self-titled LP. The former saw him teaming up with a handful of friends including Shenseea and Don Toliver, but on the latter, he operated solo.

Fan favorites on Masego include “What You Wanna Try,” “Black Anime,” and “Sax Fifth Avenue.” Whether you’re seeking to pretend you’re on the beach while tanning in your backyard this summer or need a soundtrack for an evening of dancing with friends, the 30-year-old has you covered with his long-awaited, must-listen record. He’s got a few live performances lined up over the coming months, including one at AfroBeats Festival in August, so fans will even have a chance to enjoy Masego’s new music in person before fall hits.

JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown Unleash “Scaring The Hoes: DLC Pack” EP

One of the best albums of 2023 just got an upgrade, and it’s just as raw and impressive as its first volume. Moreover, JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown just released the Scaring The H*es: DLC Pack, a four-track expansion on their stellar collaborative project from this year. Peggy’s obviously back on production, and his instrumentals are still a wonder of impressive sampling, gritty drum patterns, and dynamic motion. Furthermore, these beats provide a wild but addictive bed for both MCs to dominate, with hilarious references and wordplay plus some sharp lyricism. Overall, if you’re not a fan of the fringes of hip-hop that become more and more important with each year, then let this be your starting point.

First off, the opening track “Guess What B***h, We Back H*e!” is a classic flow and formula for the duo, with woozy synths and hard-hitting drums. However, “HERMANOS” takes things in a more laidback direction (instrumentally, at least) with a breezy guitar sample, reminiscent verses from JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown, and a wild outro. In addition, the following cut “Tell Me Where To Go” is also a chilled-out cut with a great Al Green sample, calm delivery, and a solid boom-bap rhythm. Also, the final song brings back the gospel chops with distorted drums and a hilarious but sharp acapella outro from Danny.

In other news concerning the rappers, the Veteran artist looks like he’ll have a busy year, with him saying he has two more albums in the year. While it’s unclear whether this EP counts, he did spark rumors of a collab tape with Denzel Curry. Meanwhile, the unkowhatimsayin¿ creative recently spoke on working through writer’s block with Logic, and as complicated as the creative process might be, it’ll probably yield some more gold from all artists involved in the future. If you want to check out this new EP, find it on YouTube and peep the tracklist below. Also, stay up to date on HNHH for the latest news and updates on JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown.

Ransom & Nicholas Craven Tap Talib Kweli & Raina Simone For “Minority Report”

Jersey City MC Ransom and producer Nicholas Craven recently released a full-length collaborative project, Directors Cut 4. For fans of soulful and sample-heavy production, intricate rhymes, and a refreshed take on classic hip-hop, this is one of the most notable releases of the week. Although it contains plenty of standouts, one that’s bound to particularly resonate with fans is the stacked “Minority Report.” Featuring Talib Kweli and Raina Simone, this song focuses on authenticity, talent within hip-hop, and emerging from a system that is stacked against you. There are a lot of heavy street bars on here, as well as more spiritual fare and comments on political oppression, but don’t let this denseness put you off.

For starters, the beat by Nicholas Craven might remind listeners of some of Ransom’s earlier beats like “Sinatra’s Demons.” Like that song, this track contains some powerful strings and a minimal but still noticeable drum pattern to keep the song grounded. Also, there’s an interesting mix between these strings and some faint background vocals that seem more ghostly than anything else. Considering the track’s weighted subject matter, this just adds to the drama and impact of the sharp bars. For example, the legendary Talib Kweli’s verse takes more of a violence-oriented focus, speaking on snitches and posturing in the world of crime.

Ransom & Nicholas Craven’s “Minority Report”

Matched with Ransom’s opening verse and chorus, this makes for a bittersweetly triumphant cut. To close things off before the last chorus, lyricist Raina Simone delivers a killer verse about her struggles, experience, and legacy as a Black woman. Even though this songs packs a deep punch, it still thrives in the fundamentals of the genre (like much of his material) to make an engaging listen. If you haven’t heard Directors Cut 4 yet, you can find it on your preferred streaming service and peep some notable lines from “Minority Report” down below. ASAP Twelvyy Proclaims That “Kids Gotta Eat” On New Album

A$AP Twelvyy is back with a vengeance on his latest album Kid$ Gotta Eat, a 15-track offering of intricate rhymes and varied production. Moreover, this is his first full-length project since 2020’s Noon Yung, so it’s been a really long time since we’ve heard from him in this capacity. Fortunately, Kid$ Gotta Eat contains a little bit of everything: drumless introspection, bass-heavy trap bangers, boom-bap-style throwbacks, and even some Jersey club-reminiscent cuts in there. In addition, there are a few songs here that pull heavily from should and R&B, whether thanks to its samples or the instrumentation itself.

As such, this album flows quite erratically from track to track, but each track still has the potential to sink you into it within seconds. Also, some smooth transitions between songs make the experience a little more easily digestible for those who want to stay on one speed. Overall, it’s also a compelling collection of personal narratives, whether about ASAP Twelvyy’s neighborhood, his career come-up, or his observations of his surroundings. While this is a tried and true formula for an established career’s release, the New York MC still shows his hunger and writing ability on here. Elsewhere, he’s still able to fit a banger quite well with varied flows and a confident delivery.

DoggyStyleeee & Snoop Dogg Want You To “Say It Witcha Chest” On New Single

When Snoop Dogg connects with someone inspired so much by his debut album that he named himself as such, you know it’s bound to create fireworks. Moreover, DoggyStyleeee tapped the West Coast legend for a West Coast banger on their new track “Say It Witcha Chest.” As this collaboration suggests, this is a California-style instrumental with rubbery bass, minimal hi-hats, a sharp snare and cymbal hits, and a slinky and airy synth line. In addition, there are some stripped-back keys leading the track’s melody that especially take prominence during the verses, cooling the song off. Overall, if you’re a big fan of this sound, we highly recommend your hear Tha Doggfather and an underground Cali veteran slide on this track.

As far as the song’s structure, there’s quite a catchy hook here that’s as brag-heavy and confident as the song’s title suggests. With two verses, one from each MC, it actually keep listeners engaged with consistent flow switch-ups and some contrasting deliveries. While DoggyStyleeee comes through with a bit more raucous and animated energy, Snoop Dogg sounds as laidback and as effortlessly cool and collected as ever. Of course, lyrically, it’s very much in line for a track like “Say It Witcha Chest”: a lot of machismo, street talk, and some more seductive bars spread out across sharp and emphatic lines.

Meanwhile, the Long Beach legend has a lot to celebrate amid the release of new music. For example, he recently reacted positively to Death Row winning the title for BET’s best rap crew of all time over the likes of Wu-Tang, YMCMB, and many others. Even though he’s a certified icon, it’s never too late to stay on that musical grind. Father Delivers New Genre-Fusing Single “Toddlerz”

Many readers may remember Father as one of the exciting and unique new voices that sprouted out around or adjacent to the SoundCloud rap generation. Since then, though, the Mississippi-born and Atlanta-raised rapper blossomed into an artist capable of many different genres, which he displayed on this year’s Hu$band 2 EP. In fact, he fuses a couple of those on his latest track “Toddlerz,” while all feeling like a cohesively melancholy but also hedonistic and carefree cut. After all, with lyrics referencing making girls slobber on top of a drill-like drum pattern, it’s hard not to see it as that once you read into it. Still, the production gives the song a little bit more emotion and makes his lines about doing what he has to for his family hit a little harder.

First, this sound-melding beat is a winner from the start, with somber acoustic guitar leading us in. Once the bare and skeletal drill drums kick in with Father’s mid-tempo flow, they take on a wholly new (and harder) effect. After a brief vocal sample, heavy cymbal hits and reverb-heavy guitars propel the track through the 32-year-old’s verse in more eerie and nocturnal fashion. In fact, the guitar licks might even remind you of something from the likes of King Krule, which was an unexpected but welcome direction. Furthermore, Father’s “Toddlerz” ends with a drum kit, taking us back to the alt-rock stylings of the beginning as if we never left.

Father’s “Toddlerz”

Lyrically, the Awful Records leader strikes a wild balance between sexual and street references, with some added bars about mental health and his family. As far as his flow and delivery, it’s all quite low-key as he doesn’t really come through with explosive energy here despite the rock leanings. Instead, he continues to prove that his music gets more under your skin than anything else, and with the engaging instrumental and occasionally cheeky bars, it’s in the best way possible. If you haven’t heard “Toddlerz” yet, you can find it on your preferred streaming service and check out some quotable below. Valee, Harry Fraud & Action Bronson Have “Vibrant” Chemistry On New Single

Valee, Harry Fraud, and Action Bronson just showed off some great chemistry on their new single, aptly titled “Vibrant.” Not only do the beat and bars give off that vibe, but it also continues a bit of a prolific streak for Fraud in particular these past few weeks. Just last Friday, he teamed up with Curren$y for the full-length project VICES, which made for a versatile and compelling team-up. Hopefully this new collaboration isn’t the last that features these players together, as Valee and Bronson do a great job of fitting the instrumental in their own unique ways. In addition, it’s a fitting track for the summer months, with its crisp sample and laidback flows and bars.

Moreover, the beat here is based on an enveloping and soulful pitched-up sample with ear-grabbing vocal chops and soaring singing. The light guitar strums are what give “Vibrant” its most potent vibrance, giving it a sun-soaked feeling. Also, the bright keys that flutter in the background and the crisp and steady drum pattern complete the song’s summery vibes. On that bed of sounds, Valee and Action Bronson both give their own unique takes as far as delivery and flow. Whereas the Chicago native chose a more unorthodox flow and deflated delivery, the New York MC sounds more animated and floats with a classic East Coast rhyme pattern.

Valee, Harry Fraud & Action Bronson’s “Vibrant”

Lyrically, the track aims to recreate the production’s blissfulness with opulent references, cheeky lines, and luxurious name-drops. Gucci outfits, all-inclusive stays, baby blue Vlone, camel skin bongos, F-150s, and caviar take center stage. While it might not be the most exciting song in the world, repeat listens will entrance you if the first one doesn’t do so already. Joell Ortiz & L’Orange Salute Everyone Who Makes It To Be An “OG” On New Single

Joell Ortiz, the skilled Brooklyn lyricist who formed part of the group Slaughterhouse, is gearing up to release a new album with producer L’Orange titled Signature. For those unfamiliar with his work, it’s characterized by sharp lines and wordplay, an emphasis on grimy production, and a confident delivery as he spits out street bars. If this newest single is anything to go by, this may well be one of the New York rapper’s best projects in a while. Moreover, “OG” is a dark and menacing soundscape layered with tales of Ortiz’s age, life experiences, and injustice.

Furthermore, Joell Ortiz specifically hones in on how people in the streets escape their tough circumstances and rise above systemic police abuse and hardened crimes. In fact, Ortiz speaks on his own status as an MC and how he’s aged, but also how he still remembers those days. His flow is steady and well-balanced between faster stanzas and more punch-packing short bars. His two verses on the song are actually narratively framed in somewhat of an inverse order. In the first, he stars with his current life and then reminisces on how it used to be. On the second he inverts that to recall how you might love your hood, “but when you leave, you won’t miss it much.”

Joell Ortiz & L’Orange’s “OG”

Meanwhile, the production here is simple but dangerously effective as a raw instrumental. With just an infectious bassline, simple boom-bap drums, and a distorted guitar strum that reverberates throughout, the beat bangs. Signature will likely be a very solid project, and “OG” builds that hype up as an excellent track. If you haven’t heard it yet, find it on your preferred streaming service and check out some standout lines below. Also, stay posted on HNHH for the latest news and updates on Joell Ortiz and L’Orange.

King Von & Tee Grizzley Grew Up “Heartless” On New Single

King Von’s upcoming posthumous album Grandson (arriving July 14) will be an important moment in the late rapper’s career. Moreover, it will be his second body of work after his passing, and many wonder whether it will stick the landing considering that many releases in this vein can feel exploitative. That being said, if this new track “Heartless” with Tee Grizzley is anything to go by, fans should expect to be satisfied. This is the kind of track that Von perfected during his career, with the right balance of aggression, darkness, but also sorrow. While the bars here may paint a harsh picture of the streets, the instrumental gives it a somber tone that puts it all into context.

Furthermore, high-pitched keys and atmospheric pads lead the melody and harmony on “Heartless.” It almost sounds nostalgic, but the hard trap drums ground the track in its violent subject matter. In addition, there are some buried choir vocals that make the beat feel more eerie, despite the fact that they’re quite subtle in the mix. Like much of King Von’s catalog, this track has a haunting feel that contrasts well with his bars. Not only does he speak on the harshness of his upbringing, but his present attitude on the track says more about it than any anecdote ever could.

King Von & Tee Grizzley’s “Heartless”

Meanwhile, Tee Grizzley comes through with a quick, short, but effective verse that matches the Chicago MC with ease. Also, he makes a bit more of an effort to switch up his flow at a certain point, even if he doesn’t divert from its core. Overall, it may be a standard Von song at the end of the day, but it’s yet another one where his talents shine through. If you haven’t heard “Heartless” yet, check it out on your preferred streaming service and read some notable bars below.
