Kanye West’s Former Chief of Staff Believes Ye’s Downward Spiral Linked to Alleged Use of Harmful ‘Nitrous’ Gas

image

It’s getting real dark over at team Yeezy. Kanye West’s former chief of staff, Milo Yiannopoulos, has leveled serious accusations against West’s dentist, Thomas P. Connelly, alleging that the dentist supplied the rapper with large quantities of nitrous oxide for recreational use, disregarding the potential harm it could cause. Let’s just check the source. Yiannopoulos has a lot of baggage as a far right figure but he does seem genuinely concerned for his former boss.

Let’s get deep. Yiannopoulos claims that the doctor’s behavior was both unethical and unlawful, as it contributed to West’s alleged decline in mental health.

Get this, according to a legal affidavit obtained by the Daily Mail, Yiannopoulos alleges that Connelly not only provided West with nitrous oxide but also charged the rapper over $50,000 per month for this service. Sheesh. Despite concerns about the negative effects the gas was having on West. Yiannopoulos describes this as a betrayal of professional ethics, stating that Connelly “knowingly encouraged” the use of the gas without the supervision of a qualified medical professional, particularly given West’s history of mental illness and addiction. We told you. Just wild.

It gets worse. Yiannopoulos further claims that Connelly was aware of West’s vulnerable state, yet continued to take millions of dollars from him, effectively exploiting the rapper’s condition. He described Connelly’s actions as “fraudulent,” accusing the dentist of ignoring the “self-destructive consequences of dependence” and the potential “permanent damage to brain or body” that could result from the excessive use of nitrous oxide. Who is watching over Kanye, like seriously, we need to know.

In the affidavit, Yiannopoulos mentioned that some Yeezy employees had voiced concerns about West’s reliance on the gas, as they should, noting that he appeared to be using it almost constantly. He described how employees became alarmed upon discovering surgical tanks filled with nitrous oxide at the apartment of Bianca Censori, West’s partner, which suggested that West was consuming the gas in large amounts.

Yiannopoulos also highlighted that West had openly discussed his use of the gas during meetings with his staff, and that his communication had become increasingly “incomprehensible and contradictory.” Like, you think?

He linked these symptoms to West’s “widely-reported bipolar diagnosis,” suggesting that the prolonged use of nitrous oxide exacerbated his condition. According to Yiannopoulos, Connelly was aware of West’s psychological vulnerabilities and chose to exploit them.

Yiannopoulos has called for an investigation into the matter and has urged that Connelly’s dental license be suspended. Let’s see if anything actually happens. He stated that his decision to come forward with these claims was driven by “urgent concern” for West’s well-being.

ICYMI, these ugly accusations from Yiannopoulos come several months after his departure from Yeezy, a move he made in response to West’s plans to start a porn studio. At the time, Yiannopoulos cited moral and religious reasons for his decision, saying that he “cannot be complicit in the production of pornographic films and literature.” He also expressed concern for his own well-being, stating that involvement in the project would pose “an imminent danger to my life as a recovering addict and an unacceptable risk to my spiritual and physical health as a former homosexual.”

However, Yiannopoulos hinted that he might consider returning to Yeezy if the company were to “publicly and permanently abandon any plan to produce, distribute, or profit from obscene content.” He said, “If at any time in the future, the company publicly and permanently abandons any plan to produce, distribute, or profit from obscene content, it would be an honor to serve you again,” according to TMZ, and they get the scoop so we know there’s something to this story. Prayers for Yeezy but at some point he has to be responsible for his own well being.

Andre 3000 Claims He Has Several Diss Tracks That He’s Never Released

Andre 3000 is one of the best rappers of all time. It’s close to being an objective truth. You’d be hard pressed to find a hip-hop fan who dismissed Andre’s bars, or doubted his abilities on the mic. He’s so good in fact, that he’s never been directly challenged by another rapper. Andre 3000 has been rapping since 1994, and not one other person has dared to call him out directly or attempt to battle him. We can (and have) chalked this up to Stack’s peaceful approach, but a recent interview complicates this take. It seems like the rapper has, in fact, penned a few diss tracks.

Andre 3000 let the cat out of the bag during a recent interview with Crack Magazine. The rapper gave his take on the Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar battle, which led to reflect on his own feelings towards dissing others. Apparently, Stacks is all for it. Up to a point, that is. He told the magazine that he’s written lots of diss songs throughout his career. “You have feelings,” he explained. “If n**gas say some slick sh*t, lines will come to your head immediately.” Andre 3000 draws the line, however, at releasing said disses. He’s all for working out his pen for the sake of “exercise,” but doesn’t support the notion of putting negative energy out into the world.

Andre 3000 Considers Writing Disses Good “Exercise”

The concept of an Andre 3000 diss is fascinating, and something that Dungeon Family member Kawan Prather talked about in 2017. He told HipHopDX that he would actually like to see someone challenge the rapper, just to see what it would inspire. “I wish somebody would diss him so we can really actually see it,” Prather stated. “No one’s ever had the audacity to do it.” The former A&R pointed to Andre 3000’s verse on the Outkast song “The Whole World” as proof. “[It’s] an invitation for somebody to diss him. Listen to that verse: ‘I wish you would.’”

To be fair to Andre 3000, “The Whole World” dropped in 2001. It’s likely he doesn’t feel as combative as he did two decades ago. Ironically, one of the few times the rapper talked about a tense interaction with an artist was when he met his idol, Prince. He recalls Prince talking about the song “Hey Ya,” and claimed to be unsure if the singer actually enjoyed it. “I didn’t know how to take it,” Andre said on the Questlove Supreme podcast. “If he was taking a dig at me or what… I didn’t know how to take it; this is my hero.”

WATCH: New Trailer For ‘Rebel Ridge’ Starring Aaron Pierre in Small Town Action Thriller For Netflix

image

This looks fun. Aaron Pierre and AnnaSophia Robb team up as unexpected allies in their fight to expose a small-town conspiracy in the upcoming Netflix film, “Rebel Ridge”.

The action packed trailer with a smart hook introduces Pierre, known for his role in “Genius: MLK/X”, as Terry Richmond, a man on a straightforward mission to post bail for his cousin. However, what starts as a simple task quickly spirals into a dangerous journey, forcing Terry to join forces with a court clerk, played by Robb, in a battle against corruption. The film also features Don Johnson in a key role.

Check out the official synopsis from Shadow and Act:

“Terry Richmond (Aaron Pierre) enters the town of Shelby Springs on a simple but urgent mission—to post bail for his cousin and save him from imminent danger. But when Terry’s life savings is unjustly seized by law enforcement, he’s forced to go head-to-head with local police chief Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson) and his combat-ready officers. Terry finds an unlikely ally in court clerk Summer McBride (AnnaSophia Robb), and the two become ensnared in a deep-rooted conspiracy within the remote township. As the stakes turn deadly, Terry must call upon his mysterious background to break the department’s hold on the community, bring justice to his own family—and protect Summer in the process.”

Get this “Rebel Ridge” is written and directed by Jeremy Saulnier, and the film also stars David Denman, Emory Cohen, Steve Zissis, Dana Lee, Zsané Jhé, and James Cromwell.

In an interview with Blavity’s Shadow and Act, Pierre discussed his enthusiasm for the project, calling it an “undeniable” opportunity. “The very first moment I met with Jeremy, the first moment I read the script, which I read within minutes of it being sent to me, and I finished it in maybe 90 minutes, it was undeniable for me,” he said. “The filmmaker is undeniable, the character was undeniable. The journey of the characters was undeniable, and the studio behind it was undeniable.”

What’s interesting is Pierre broke down how the role allowed him to explore a different side of his acting abilities, stepping away from his usual work in biopics:

“I think a considerable amount, if not the majority, of what I’ve done has been based on historical fact. And in some ways, this film, although it’s a fiction story, it does make a comment on the reality of a number of people’s existence and in regards to their engagements with police,” he explained. “But I think in regards to this, I think it’s arguably the first time that I’ve really gotten into my action bag and engaging in this high-velocity action, tumbling, falling, jumping, cycling, running…so I’m really excited, hopefully, for people to gift us with the opportunity to engage with them and hopefully entertain them.”

“Rebel Ridge” hits Netflix on September 6 and we can’t wait.

Here’s the trailer below:

All About “Tusi”: The New Dangerous Drug Connected To Diddy’s Lawsuit

Synthetic drugs have long wreaked havoc on communities worldwide, and “Tuci” or “Tusi,” also known as “Pink Cocaine,” is the latest substance to surge in the market. Originating in Colombia, Tusi became a hot topic of conversation after the drug was mentioned in Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones Jr.’s lawsuit against Sean “Diddy” Combs. Jones made shocking allegations in court documents, including accusing Diddy of hosting wild, drug-fueled parties where sexual assaults took place.

According to Jones, Diddy hired a “mule” named Brendan Paul who “procured, transported and distributed ecstasy, cocaine, GHB, ketamine, marijuana, mushrooms, and tuci by packing these substances in their carry-on luggage and going through TSA.” Further, Jones named Yung Miami as someone who helped transport the drug to the Bad Boy mogul. The bright pink substance’s look appeals to users, but because it is a relatively newer drug, its long-term effects have yet to be studied.

What Exactly Is Tusi?

A man prepares a powder known as Tussi or pink cocaine in Medellin, Colombia, on April 2, 2022. – Three decades after Pablo Escobar’s shot body was left on a Medellin rooftop, drug trafficking continues and, at present, markets for flavored cocaine, local crack, pharmaceutical drugs and ketamine-based hallucinogens are rife for in his hometown. (Photo by JOAQUIN SARMIENTO / AFP) (Photo by JOAQUIN SARMIENTO/AFP via Getty Images)

Pink cocaine may have surfaced in Colombia, but its ties to Europe can’t be ignored. The National Library of Medicine reported that tusi is named after “2C,” a list of psychedelic phenethylamines that “rarely contains 2C series drugs.” They write, “The majority of tusi samples contain ketamine, often combined with 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), methamphetamine, cocaine, opioids, and/or new psychoactive substances.” Fentanyl is also used to make the mixture. Moreover, even someone who had “unintentional exposure” is at risk.

Those “new psychoactive substances” mentioned, or NPS, have also puzzled authorities. WebMD reports that NPS drugs are challenging to test because their chemical makeup differs. Because of the nickname “Pink Cocaine,” some have simply believed the drug is a food-coloring version of the typically white drug. However, researchers say tusi may not be cocaine at all, but it will definitely be a combination of some of the most popular and dangerous street drugs. “Certainly, any customer would assume that there would be cocaine in something marketed as ‘pink cocaine,’” New York City Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget Brennan said, per Newsweek. “But it’s interesting how rarely we actually find it.” There is also evidence that tusi can contain bath salts, caffeine, LSD, or mescaline.

How Does The Drug Make Users Feel?

Brennan added that “the primary concern is for the users,” especially considering the drug isn’t consistent in its makeup. Tusi contains both depressants and stimulants, shocking one’s system and causing a series of potentially deadly effects. “Cocaine is a stimulant, and someone who is expecting to get cocaine may know how it affects their body or their tolerance,” said Brennan of the “speedball” concoction. “Ketamine is something completely different. It’s an anesthetic, a sedative and it has hallucinogenic properties as well.”

Additionally, it’s reported that a tusi “high” stays anywhere from one to three hours but could last as long as eight. Users have noted that the illegal drug intensifies their senses, makes them feel elated, and quickens heart rates. These observations vary due to the unknown makeup of each batch of the drugs.

The Side Effects Of Tusi

Like all street drugs, the side effects of tusi can be fatal. Factors including drug tolerance, physical stature, how much is used (and frequency), as well as what is in tusi can influence these harmful effects. Aside from the “happy high” that tusi provides, the downsides include confusion, stomach sickness, hallucinations, changes in breathing, a drop in body temperature, feeling agitated, or even seizures. Long-term use can also cause changes in your brain and permanent impairment of blood vessels. Cardiac arrests have also been reported, primarily caused by “excited delirium.”

“The person who thinks they’re getting cocaine and ends up getting a pretty strong dose of ketamine may be completely knocked out,” Brennan said. “The effect on them is not going to be what they would’ve expected, and they may not be prepared in any way shape or form for that kind of reaction. It’s dangerous.” Further, prolonged tusi use can also result in depression, anxiety, personality shifts, and changes in sleep patterns.

Huge Drug Busts Are Increasing

Over the last few years, there have been increasing raids and arrests connected with pink cocaine. Reports state that California and New York were locations of crackdowns as the coasts of Mexico and Central and South America were monitored for four months this year. Over 140 pounds of tusi was seized during this time. The U.S. Coast Guard has been diligent in these patrols, capturing several illicit drugs, including tusi, worth upward of $2 billion on the streets.

The February and March busts resulted in the arrests of five people who face federal charges. The Coast Guard’s 11th district commander, Rear Admiral Andrew Sugimoto, said in a statement, “The effort put in while interdicting more than 33,000 pounds of cocaine in a few weeks’ time is unparalleled.” He added, “We will continue our commitment to stopping these criminals and the vast amounts of drugs they attempt to bring into our country.”

Meanwhile, Brennan detailed her first run-in with tusi when 51-year-old Carlos Asturias was arrested in January 2023. He was reportedly pulled over for a traffic stop and found to have 10 pounds of pink cocaine in a bag. However, further testing showed that the drug was pure ketamine.

Authorities Have Linked Tusi Trafficking To A Venezuelan Gang

Yesterday, it was reported out of Denver, Colorado, that a jewelry heist was connected to Tren de Argua, an infamous gang out of Venezuela. Several men were said to have held up the family-owned business at gunpoint, beating two women who worked at the location and dragging them by their hair. It’s believed the same gang is also a major player in trafficking tusi into the U.S. Law enforcement officials also claim that the drug is moving quickly underground through clubs and concerts.

There is also speculation about a Mexican cartel distributing the drug as well. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) stated in a threat examination, “The Mexican government has not disclosed the seizure of any tusi labs in Mexico, but the Sinaloa Cartel is capable of importing large quantities of ketamine from China to facilitate tusi production in Mexico.” It is also believed that traffickers are organizing music events for the sole purpose of dispersing tusi to the masses.

A Teen Died After His Drink Was Spiked With Tusi

Several global reports have also highlighted a particularly devastating incident out of Spain. It has been shared that a 14-year-old boy and two friends encountered someone on Instagram and later scheduled an in-person meeting in Madrid. While there, the teen drank a Red Bull that was spiked with tusi, resulting in their death. This further emphasizes the dangers of tusi, as it can also be administered against someone’s will, causing concern about it also becoming an attack on the unsuspecting.

Travis Scott’s Heated Police Confrontation Captured In Bodycam Footage From Miami Arrest

Earlier this year, a minor disagreement on a Miami yacht landed Travis Scott in jail. He was charged with disorderly intoxication and trespassing. Luckily, the hitmaker was released within hours, and on a private jet back to LA. Today, it was reported that the state of Florida has decided to move forward with a misdemeanor trespassing charge against him. He’ll go to trial next month. On the upside, they dropped the disorderly intoxication charge.

Now, however, police bodycam footage from his arrest has been obtained by TMZ. In it, he argues with officers as they repeatedly question why he returned to the yacht despite being told to leave. Scott tells them that when they initially asked if he’d left anything behind, he was freaked out by all of the cops. For this reason, he says he forgot some of his belongings on board. He got heated, and eventually, they put handcuffs on him.

Travis Scott Taken Into Custody Over Yacht Dispute

Footage from his initial encounter with police has also been uncovered. It shows Scott jumping off the yacht to chat with an officer. When asked what happened, he simply explained that he had rented the yacht, and its owner kicked down the door just before midnight claiming he had to leave. From there, he says he told the owner it was “disrespectful” to have entered the room like that, and added that the owner’s wife was “trippin.” At the beginning of this clip, he says that there was a lady with a firearm “threatening,” though it’s unclear whether or not the owner’s wife was who he was referring to.

While this run-in surely put a damper on the performer’s good time, he seemed to get over it pretty quickly. He even dropped merch featuring his mugshot the very next day. What do you think of the new bodycam footage from Travis Scott’s Miami arrest? Share your thoughts in the comments section down below and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.

Andre 3000 Reveals Why Drake And Kendrick Lamar Battle Made Him Sad

Andre 3000 is a rare breed of rapper. He’s universally respected for his lyrical skills, yet never beefed with anybody. It’s like there’s an accepted hip-hop rule that nobody can (or should) test Three Stacks in a lyrical competition. Andre 3000 was unsurprisingly silent during the Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar battle. It was actually far more surprising to hear the Outkast rapper address the situation months after the fact. He finally gave his thoughts on the battle, and who the ultimate loser was. It’s not who you think.

Andre 3000 told Crack Magazine that the battle made him sad for the music business. In particular, the people who work for Drake and Kendrick Lamar, and feed their families off of their respective success. In his estimation, those people were the ones who were truly at risk. “You got people with 100 employees,” he lamented. “You have livelihoods, empires, companies, deals – all of it can be jeopardized. If you don’t have anything to lose, sure, go for it. But if I already made it, I’m not sure it’s even worth it any more.”

Andre 3000 Enjoyed Being Referenced By K. Dot

Andre 3000 contrasted the elevated stakes that Drake and Kendrick Lamar are playing it versus the rap battles he experienced as kid. As far as he’s concerned, it’s night and day. “I got a little sad, at a certain point,” he admitted. “In early rap battles, you had kids in the park rapping against each other. But it’s not just people rapping now.” Andre 3000 occupies an interesting place within the Drake and Kendrick Lamar narrative. He’s collaborated with both artists in the past. He worked with Drake on “The Real Her” and “I Do (Remix).” He’s linked up with Lamar a few times, most notably on the N.E.R.D. song “One of You,” but none of their collabs have been officially released.

Both Drake and Kendrick Lamar hold Andre 3000 in high regard, though. The latter referenced Stacks on the diss song, “Like That.” He likened Drake and J Cole’s tough talk to the trend of seeing Andre carrying woodwind instruments with him. “Lost too many soldiers not to play it safe,” Dot raps. “If he walk around with that stick, it ain’t Andre. 3K.” Despite the context, Andre 3000 appreciated the nod. “As a 49-year-old rapper, you’re just happy to get a shoutout,” he told the aforementioned outlet. “I had to say: ‘Yeah, he got it.’”

Fans Respond To Drake’s Surprise ‘100 Gigs For Your Headtop’ File Drop

image

ICYMI, yesterday Drake, really quietly let loose “100 Gigs For Your Headtop,” a wild robust archive dump of three unreleased songs, all types of artwork, still photos and the arguably the best part – what fans believe is never-before-seen video content.

Here’s how it went down and what fans are saying after the holy grail of Drake content:

An IG profile, believed to be operated by Drake or his team, posted a link to a website titled “100 Gigs For Your Headtop,” as we said contains 100 gigabytes of content related to the multi-hyphenated Toronto artist.

Get this, the eclectic collection includes everything from studio sessions to behind-the-scenes footage of iconic music videos like “Hotline Bling” and “What’s Next.” The videos also showcase various Toronto landmarks, such as Yonge-Dundas Square, Ripley’s Aquarium, and scenes filmed on a TTC subway car.

The Gram account, which looks like it was created in June, just “popped out,” lol, during Drake’s ongoing rap feud with Kendrick Lamar, fueling speculation among fans.

But gotta have music right? The “100 Gigs For Your Headtop” website also features three new tracks: “Housekeeping Knows” featuring Latto, “Blue Green Red,” and “It’s Up,” a collaboration with 21 Savage and Young Thug.

The treasure trove of content included intimate clips from Drake’s career, including a video of Lil Wayne bringing him out during a Toronto concert in the early days of his career, and footage of Drake recording the opening track of his sophomore album *Take Care*, “Over My Dead Body,” in a hotel room.

Whew chile … Some of the most talked-about moments include a throwback video of Drake and Rihanna rehearsing their duet “Take Care,” during a period when rumors swirled about their relationship, and another clip where Drake confides in his mother, Sandy Graham, that his song “Too Good” is about tennis star Serena Williams.

“When I make songs about women, I also make songs for them… If I’m gonna talk about them, I’ll at least do them the justice of making a song that they’d like,” Drake explained to his mother. “I know Serena very well and I know that she’ll hear it loud and clear, but she’ll also not hate me for it because it’s light-hearted.”

As expected the surprise drop has left fans in awe, with many celebrating the content for showcasing Drake’s artistry.

“Drake dropping 100 gigs from his archive is insanely next level,” one user on X (twitter) commented. “Might be one of the smartest moves I’ve seen an artist do in a while.”

Another user added, “100 gigs is good content. Yes, Drake got smoked in that rap battle, but I’m glad people are remembering he’s still a great artist.”

“Drake just dropped 100 Gigs of history,” another user proclaimed. We concur.

“After giving ‘100 Gigs For Your Headtop’ enough time to digest, it is clear that Drake delivered once again,” a fan wrote. “The OVO head honcho uniquely released 3 quality tracks that will surely keep the summer blazing.”

Let’s be real. Feel how you want to feel but no one is doing this, has done this and will look weird trying to duplicate what Drake just did. Period.

Campaign For Vice President Kamala Harris Denies Reaching Out To Streamer Kai Cenat

image

Streamers are getting powerful. Just needed to be said because they are. So, on Wednesday, August 7, streamer Kai Cenat made a not so wild claim that he had been approached by various individuals to host Vice President Kamala Harris on his livestream channel. Sounds fishy though. Right after Adin Ross and Trump did their weird sycophant mini town hall adjacent carpool karaoke thing?

As we suspected, looks like cap. New reports are suggesting this all might be a flat-out truth stretch to put it lightly.

According to the all seeing eyes of TMZ, the campaign for Kamala Harris’s bid to become POTUS actually denied reaching out to Cenat for any appearances. Exhale.

Get this, sources close to the campaign stated to TMZ, that no one from the Harris for President team ever contacted Cenat or his reps, and top brass within the campaign have not discussed using Cenat’s platform for any potential collaborations.

Now after the newest drama, or lack thereof, Cenat has yet to respond publicly to the campaign’s denial.

Check this out. How it all started before mothballing from there … During his initial livestream, the 22-year-old popular streamer claimed that the Secret Service, yes those guys, had contacted him “five times” and mentioned that someone from his past had recently reached out, supposedly to discuss a potential collaboration between him and the Vice President. So now the Secret Service is the fist point of contact for booking high profile engagements between influencers and the VP? Sounds weird in our humble opinion.

“If somehow, someway, something was to happen where I do a stream [about] politics, I’m going to be 100% honest. I’m going to sit on my stream and say, ‘Why did you guys call me?’” Cenat said during the stream. “I don’t know! I’ve never done anything with politics, and these blogs are like, ‘Yo, you’ve got to do this sh*t Kai’—And it’s all the top blogs.”

Not missing a chance to join the chat, Charlamagne Tha God weighed in criticizing the rumored idea as “inorganic.” He remarked, “Hit me and tell me who sent you that text, man, because whoever on Vice President Kamala Harris’ team hit Kai Cenat to do a livestream, they need to be fired.” The fact that the campaign denies this makes C-Tha-God’s quick to jump at a story without fact checking a bit irresponsible but what do we know.

Charlamagne went on to add, “I do believe politicians should absolutely meet people where they are, but it still has to make sense. Let it be something organic. There’s a lot of places the VP can go to get in front of a younger audience. There are influencers Kai’s age. I don’t know. I’m all for meeting people where they are, but it also has to make sense.” Again, an unnecessary take since it looks like they never did what the streamer alleges.

Anywho, did or didn’t the thought was funny but in this election there’s not much room for fun and games with our entire democracy on the line. Just saying.

Noah Lyles Runs Away With Bronze Medal in 200-Meter Race  After Testing Positive for Covid

dm 240808 noah lyles 200 meter recap

Winning medals in the Olympics with COVID? Okay, we thought we’ve seen it all during the Paris games but add this to the list. Just two days after revealing that he had tested positive for COVID-19, American sprinter Noah Lyles took home the bronze medal in the 200-meter final at the Paris Olympics.

Here’s the nitty gritty … Lyles finished the epic race with a time of 19.70 seconds, securing third place behind Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, who won gold with a time of 19.46 seconds, marking a historic moment as Botswana’s first-ever Olympic gold medal. American Kenny Bednarek claimed the silver with a time of 19.62 seconds.

But wait, despite testing positive for COVID-19, Lyles remained determined to compete. He moved into a hotel to quarantine away from the Olympic Village and arrived at the track for Wednesday’s semifinal wearing a mask. He chose not to disclose his diagnosis publicly before the race, stating, “You never want to tell your competitors you’re sick. Why would you give them an edge over you?”

You may expect him to slow down in the lead up to the race but the 27 year-old Lyles appeared as energetic as ever when introduced before the final, displaying his signature enthusiasm by jumping and sprinting down the track as the sold-out crowd at Stade de France fell silent.

In a scary moment after crossing the finish line, Lyles collapsed and later asked for water while seated on the track. He was eventually placed in a wheelchair and taken away from the stadium—a stark contrast to his triumph just days earlier when he won his first Olympic gold in the 100 meters by five-thousandths of a second. After that victory, he had boldly predicted that he would win the 200 meters as well.

Thinking on his performance, Lyles admitted that testing positive for COVID-19 “definitely affected my performance,” but he remained proud of his resilience. “To be honest, I’m more proud of myself than anything, coming out and getting the bronze medal with COVID in three days. It’s been a wild Olympics,” he said.

USA Track & Field and the U.S. Olympic Committee released a statement on the matter:

“Our primary commitment is to ensure the safety of Team USA athletes while upholding their right to compete. After a thorough medical evaluation, Noah chose to compete tonight. We respect his decision and will continue to monitor his condition closely.”

Lyles was vying to become the first man to win both the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints at an Olympics since Usain Bolt in 2016 and the first American to do so since Carl Lewis 40 years ago. Nice company.

His run at more gold medals is far from done. In he upcoming 4×100-meter relay, Lyles said he would leave the decision to USA Track & Field on whether he should run in the final, for which the U.S. team had already qualified with the fastest time in the preliminaries. Wishing Lyles a speedy recovery.
