Today in Hip-Hop History: Geto Boys Dropped Their Third LP ‘We Can’t Be Stopped’ 33 Years Ago

24 geto boys we cant be stopped 1991 controversial rap album covers

On this date in Hip-Hop history, Houston legends the Geto Boys released their most popular album to date, We Can’t Be Stopped, on J. Prince’s Rap A Lot Records.

With Bushwick Bill’s self-inflicted gunshot wound to the eye on the album cover and their uber-popular “Mind Playin’ Tricks On Me” dominating airwaves, Bill, Willie D, and Face’s most revered album helped re-define the term “hotter than July”.

The 14 track classic was certified platinum less than a year after its release, making Geto Boys a household name and making room for Brad Jordan to drop his debut album, Mr. Scarface Is Back.

Rest In Peace to Bushwick Bill and NJ-born DJ Ready Red, who was an original member of the Geto Boys, who left the group during the reocrding of this album. Salute to Uncle Face and Willie D for giving us such a timeless piece of Hip Hop history!

WATCH: Ma$e Calls Shakur Stevenson ‘Twitterson’ in Back and Forth Following Recent Boxing Win

unnamed (12)

Shakur Stevenson won over the weekend, but most of the boxing community has dubbed the match a snoozefest. That includes Ma$e, who appeared on his sports show with Cam’ron, It Is What It Is, and stated he does not want to see Stevenson fight anyone in the future.

Stevenson clapped back with “Fuck Mase” and also some shade in “Surviving diddy ass bull.”

Of course, Ma$e didn’t let it die down there; both he and Cam issued responses.

Shakur Stevenson, the WBC lightweight world champion, successfully defended his title against Artem Harutyunyan on Saturday evening at Prudential Center. The hometown hero secured a unanimous decision with scores of 119-109, 118-110, and 116-112.

Stevenson, now 22-0 with 10 KOs, dominated the fight, showcasing his superior skill against Harutyunyan, who had been inactive for nearly a year. The Armenian-born, German-based challenger, holding a 12-2 record with 7 KOs, struggled to withstand Stevenson’s relentless body shots. Although Stevenson fought aggressively in the second half, Harutyunyan’s resilience prevented a knockout.

The Newark crowd cheered as their champion maintained his perfect record, reaffirming that there’s no place like home for Shakur Stevenson.

Eminem Is Going Full ‘White Rapper’ For A New Collaboration With White Castle

Eminem is leaning into his status as a white person in hip-hop with a new White Castle merch collaboration that fans are sure to eat up.

The collab was announced yesterday (July 9), and the merch line features two items. There’s a white t-shirt that features the classic White Castle logo, but modified to say “White Rapper” instead. It also reads, “Established in 1972… Buy ’em by the ‘sack,” a reference to Eminem’s birth year and not that of White Castle, which was founded in 1921. The other item is a simpler black and white trucker hat with the “White Rapper” logo on the front.

The hat costs $30 and it’s $35 for the shirt, and both can be bought on Eminem’s web store.

Of course, Eminem’s long-running success in hip-hop has sparked much discussion over the years about his status as a white rapper. For example, in 2023, Melle Mel of Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five said of Em, “Obviously, he’s a capable rapper. If you was talking about sales, he sold more than everybody. If you talking about rhyme style — OK, he got a rhyme style. But he’s white! He’s white! If Eminem was just another n**** like all the rest of us, would he be top 5 on that list when a n**** that can rhyme just as good as him is 35?”

Jack Harlow also prompted some discussion when he referenced Eminem on 2023’s “They Don’t Love It,” rapping, “The hardest white boy since the one who rapped about vomit and sweaters / And hold the comments ’cause I promise you I’m honestly better than whoever came to your head right then.”
