Judge Sets Date for YNW Melly’s Double Murder Retrial

image

Embattled rapper and double murder suspect YNW Melly returned to Broward County court on Monday, where a judge scheduled a date for his retrial.

If you haven’t been following, the rapper, whose real name is Jamell Demons, is accused of murdering his childhood friends Chris “YNW Juvy” Thomas and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams in 2018, allegedly staging the crime to look like a drive-by shooting after a late-night recording session. Like straight out of a true crime documentary, and you know there will be one. Read below for that update.

The long arm of the law sometimes is the slow arm because Judge Martin Fein set the new trial date for September 10, 2025. That’s September of next year if you missed that part. But get this, in relation to a more recent tampering case, a pretrial meeting has been scheduled for December 5, 2024.

ICYMI, the initial double murder trial for the “Murder on My Mind” rapper ended in a mistrial last summer. Complications arose in January when a judge suppressed a promotional video about Melly’s life from being used as evidence, prompting prosecutors to appeal and further delay the case.

Melly’s attorneys who have been fighting tooth and nail, requested a hearing in late April to address outstanding motions and proceed with discovery, including depositions. However, prosecutors argued that the hearing should not take place due to an appeals court stay on the proceedings.

About that documentary, Judge John J. Murphy III ruled in January that a 20-minute documentary about Melly’s life and rise to fame should not be shown to the jury. The video, filmed shortly before the double murder, often depicts Melly holding a weapon and, in its final moments, mentions the deaths of Thomas and Williams. The defense contended that the video is hearsay, while the state argued it places Melly at the crime scene. What ya’ll think? First it’s a short film, since it’s only 20 minutes but holding the blick and talking about dead homies? Yikes.

When it comes to the state’s position, they argue that the appeal, which pertains to an order suppressing evidence, automatically halts all proceedings. They maintained that the judge does not have the authority to allow discovery while the case is on appeal. The defense countered that not all issues are subject to a blanket stay and expressed a desire to explore the scope of a 2018 search warrant for text messages.

After hearing brief arguments from both sides, Judge Murphy took the matter under advisement without making a decision. Stay tuned, from now until fall 2025. Sheesh.

LeBron James and the Prospect of Retirement in Latest Interview

image

LeBron James is talking LeRetirement. Here we go … In a recent interview with ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, LeBron James discussed the possibility that his latest contract might be his last as a professional basketball player. When asked if this could be his final deal, LeBron replied, “I mean it could be. I’d never sit up here and say oh, uh, um, maybe not, but yeah, it could be. Easily. But we’ll see what happens.”

Unless you live under a proverbial rock, LeBron James has just concluded his 21st NBA season and will turn 40 in December. He recently signed a two-year, $101 million contract to return to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he will have the opportunity to play alongside his son, Bronny James Jr., for the next two years.

Given LeBron’s epic history and undeniable achievements, it’s reasonable to assume he has a plan in mind. This plan may evolve based on his health and the team’s performance, but it’s clear that he has contemplated his future in the sport. Despite his non-committal response, it’s understandable, especially considering he was recently named to the All-NBA Third Team and could potentially secure another substantial contract as he approaches 42.

As expected, LeBron’s response didn’t reveal much about his future plans, but the manner in which he answered the question was telling. He appeared genuinely amazed to still be in such a position. As a basketball historian and the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, LeBron understands the magnitude of his achievements.

While obviously this might be his last contract, LeBron remains open to the possibility of continuing his career, surprising both himself and others. Blame Tom Brady after playing in the NFL until age 45, because it’s plausible that if LeBron still feels motivated and capable, he could extend his career beyond this contract. LeMore seasons? Only time will tell.

Donald Glover Hosted Exclusive Listening Party for Childish Gambino Final Album ‘Bando Stone,’ Featuring Flo Milli and Others

image

Donald Glover hosted an exclusive listening party for “Bando Stone & the New World,” ahead of the July 19 release at New York’s cozy outdoor venue, Little Island.

Manhattan’s Little Island was packed for the event, tickets sold out within minutes despite the humid 90-degree Saturday night.

Onto the show … Glover performed 15 tracks from “Bando Stone & the New World” in a non-sequential order, showcasing styles from the hard rap of “Camp” and “Because the Internet” to the experimental, pitched-up vocals of “Awaken, My Love.”

Get this, two tracks that had the audience nodding along to the powerful bass were “Talk My Shit” and “Yoshinoya.” The former features Flo Milli and includes a pitched-up verse that Glover described as his favorite on the album. After a brief technical issue with the bass speakers, Glover returned to “melt faces off” with “Yoshinoya,” spitting verses with intensity and dispelling any notion that he’s merely an actor who raps.

Move over North West, as one standout track, “Can You Feel Me?”, featured touching lyrics from Glover’s young son, Legend. The duo sings together over a chorus reciting the ABCs, with Glover reflecting on his father’s death and themes of family and fatherhood.

When it comes to other notable collaborations on “Bando Stone” include Steve Lacy and Fousheé on the sentimental, stripped-down track “Steps Beach.” Both artists sat in the front row at Little Island, with Lacy playing gentle guitar riffs as Glover sang a soothing melody. Fousheé returned for “Runnin’ Around,” a lively party anthem. Though not present at the listening party, Yeat features on “Cruisin’,” a dramatic track from 2014 that Glover recently completed, and Jorja Smith and Amaarae contribute to the groovy “In the Night.”

Sounds like it was a Donald Glover type of night.

Ab-Soul isn’t counting out Drake. Hitting X, Soul details that he thinks Drake can find a road to redemption by relying on his skills as an emcee.

“If Drake is the MC I imagine he can be,” Ab-Soul wrote. “Redemption is not off the table.”

He added one note, “But b4 my rant gets out of context. He could never Fucc wit da Gang’Nem on sum rap shyt. That was Never a question.”

Elsewhere, Akademiks has been Drake’s whisperer throughout the entire beef with Kendrick Lamar. So his next statement may be surprising: “The Drake stimulus package right now doesn’t exist.”

In case you don’t know what the Drake stimulus package is, it was the long-running belief that throwing Drake on someone’s album or single would result in an extra boost in the performance.

“I think, you know, no pun intended, Drake’s wings slightly feel clipped,” said Akademiks. “The Drake stimulus package right now doesn’t exist. So Drake going on Camilla Cabello’s track didn’t do nothing. That’s a fact.”

As evidence of his belief, Drake’s appearance on “Hot Uptown” only made it to No. 149 in its first week. You can hear it from Akademiks below.

Bhad Bhabie Makes It Clear That She’s Not Staying With Her Boyfriend After Abuse Claims

Bhad Bhabie recently posted video footage and other evidence of her boyfriend LeVaughn allegedly abusing her, but it seems like some folks got the wrong idea. Moreover, shortly after these accusations and pieces of proof emerges, she took to social media with a slightly empathetic message for the father of her child, but only because she wants him to get the help he needs by himself. Some fans interpreted this as the rapper still sticking to her relationship with LeVaughn, which they didn’t understand at all. But she clapped back via an Instagram comments section to clear the air and leave no doubts about her decision.

“If you cared you’d leave that man. He will abuse you in front of her,” a fan wrote to Bhad Bhabie, presumably referring to their child. “I wasn’t gonna speak on this but who said I was staying?” she responded to the online user. “What about that post made y’all think I’m staying? Bc I said I love him? Bc I said he’s gonna get help? I’m so confused and apparently so are yall.”

Bhad Bhabie Isn’t Staying With LeVaughn, Contrary To Some Fans’ Interpretation

“I love that man more than I love myself and it’s honestly really sad,” Bhad Bhabie wrote about the situation with LeVaughn. “But unfortuantely this is real life I know the easy way out is to leave and that’s better said than done. This doesn’t happen this extreme often, but LV definitely has a problem. He’s going to get the help he needs. Right now there’s no room for mistakes. And he knows that. Who ever says they are there for me will b supportive of me no matter what I choose to do.

“Y’all know I give a mf hell but there’s no excuse for that at all what so ever,” Bhad Bhabie continued concerning the alleged domestic violence . “My point in sharing this wasn’t to attack him, it was for him to see what he does is wrong and to take accountability and make a REAL CHANGE.” Considering other antics and issues that came up earlier in 2024 such as an arrest for a burglary she didn’t commit, hopefully the rest of the year picks up for her.
