Pop Smoke’s vault has run dry, according to his associates, but there still seem to be a few gems that are due out for an official release. Over the weekend, Pop Smoke affiliate and Brooklyn drill rapper Jay Gwuapo treated fans to the official release of “Lefty.” Snippets of the record began circulating in late 2022 before a full leak emerged. Some variations of the record included contributions from Fivio Foreign, who doesn’t appear on the official release of “Lefty.”
The official version of the record finds Pop Smoke filling the intro and outro while Gwuapo holds down the verse. For those that have been longing for new music from Pop, this might fill the void but ultimately, even his posthumous appearance on the record doesn’t necessarily showcase anything we haven’t heard. However, it’s apparent that Pop’s gruff flow belongs on these types of icy, sinister productions rather than the pop-centric beats that have largely occupied his posthumous albums.
Pop Smoke & Jay Gwuapo Unite On “Lefty”
Ultimately, it looks like there won’t be many posthumous offerings from Pop Smoke in the future. Months after the Brooklyn-bred star died, his label and 50 Cent teamed up for the release of his official debut album, Shoot For The Stars Aim For The Moon. The body of work emerged as one of the highest-selling albums of 2020 and continued its reign on the charts the following year. In 2021, his team unveiled Faith to lesser success, although fans were still happy to hear unreleased music from the vault.
As for Jay Gwuapo, the rapper hasn’t released a full project since 2019’s From Nothing Pt. 1. However, he released a steady stream of singles since then. In 2023, he came through with “Blue Faces” ft. Asian Doll and also teamed up with Sabathagod and Plexxbaby for “In The City.” Hopefully, he has more music on the way, especially now that he’s dropped “Lefty.” Check out the single above and sound off with your thoughts in the comment section below.
Quotable Lyrics
Send that boy to heaven
Baby, welcome to the party
Blue flags and some Cartiers
Off the perc, go retarded
