2Pac‘s Former Manager Praises Docuseries, “Dear Mama”

2Pac‘s former manager, Leila Steinberg, praised the upcoming docuseries, Dear Mama, for its “honesty.” Steinberg spoke about the highly-anticipated series during an interview with SiriusXM’s The Last Mile Radio.

“Well, I wanted to say something about Dear Mama. Last year, [director] Allen Hughes reached out to me and said he was doing the five-part series on FX that’s coming out…April 21st…. Part of [Alan] wanting to really do this piece was about healing, was about honesty, was about all of us looking at what happened. And, so I’m just saying this to say, he’s done an incredible piece,” she said.

While Steinburg admitted 2Pac’s behavior could be erratic, she also blamed the music industry for his downfall. “Tupac was not always right. Matter of fact, he was so passionate and so emotional and so often not emotionally literate, not able to control his emotions. And so he let his anger speak first and then later he would apologize or acknowledge things,” she said.

Steinburg continued: “I have to sit here as someone who was close to Tupac until his death, who was present many times when I no longer worked with him in a managerial capacity. I was at lots of video shoots that he did. I was in the studio at Can-Am when he was with Suge [Knight]. And this industry is so destructive, that if I point the finger, I would say that executives and this industry had more to do with his collapse than anything.”

Dear Mama will premiere on FX on April 21, with the first two of five episodes being released at the same time. The rest of the series will air on the following three Fridays. Hulu will also host the episodes one day after they air on FX. For the documentary, director Allen Hughes has said that he and his team focused on finding unreleased audio and video content of Afeni Shakur and her son. Check out a trailer for the project below.

Drake Samples Kim Kardashian On Unreleased Song, “Rescue Me”

Drake previewed an upcoming song tentatively titled, “Rescue Me,” during Friday night’s episode of Sound 42’s The Fry Yiy Show on SiriusXM Radio. On the track, he samples Kim Kardashian discussing the idea of getting a divorce from Kanye West. The audio comes from an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians in 2021.

“I didn’t come this far, just to come this far and not be happy. Remember that,” Kim said in the clip. Throughout the song, Drake sings about finding a woman to settle down with for the long run. The song could mean a new solo album is on the horizon for Drake, who recently teased dropping at some point in 2023. The Toronto rapper is also gearing up for a collaborative tour with 21 Savage this summer.

“I need someone to be patient with me/ Someone to get money, would not take it from me/ They don’t even need to be as famous as me/ I don’t think I meet ’em at the places I be/ But deep down I think about you all day, mami,” Drake raps. “I know I’m a pitbull, but dalé, mami/ I just wanna take you on a holiday, mami/ Say what’s on your mind, I’m a call away, mami/ Come and rescue me/ Take me out the club, take me out the trap/ Take me off the market, take me off the map/ I’m tryna hit the group chat and tell ’em.”

Drake previously teased the new song during a post on his Instagram Story, earlier this week. It was produced by BNYX, who shared the snippet on his Twitter account as well. “I remember when I used to add the Drake acapellas to my beats to see if they was hard,” he captioned the clip. “Now look.” 50 Cent even praised Drake after the snippet was posted. On Instagram, he wrote, “I fuck wit Drake. He getting ready to come with some hard shit. You know the vibes n***a.”

DJ Drama Denies Alleged Feud With DJ Khaled & Funk Flex

DJ Drama says that he doesn’t have a feud with DJ Khaled or Funk Flex as has been rumored. Drama discussed the relationship between the three during an interview on Sway in the Morning. Additionally, Drama says he wouldn’t even say there’s a rivalry between the producers.

“Shoutout to Khaled. Shoutout to Flex,” Drama told Sway on the show. “One thing about all of us is, when we put these projects together and we come with these collaborative projects — like this shit ain’t easy for nobody. It’s not a walk in the park, it’s a lot of work. It’s a lot of dedication. It is not an easy thing to do. So, for people listening who questions any of us. It takes a lot. It’s an amazing skill to be in this position. To be able to put albums out and consistently. The three of us that you mentioned we have multiple albums under our belts. Not even like this its one. This is my sixth album outside of the 250 mixtapes that I have done.”

From there, Sway explained that he views hip-hop as a “competitive sport.” He asked Drama, “Now talk about the rivalry. Is there a rivalry between you and Khaled? You and Flex?” Drama responded, “Nah, there’s no rivalry. I mean, first off Flex is someone I grew up inspired by — looking up to — somewhat of the blueprint in so many aspects. He was on radio. He was on television. You couldn’t open up a magazine without seeing an endorsement without him. He was putting out albums.”

He continued: “Now, that Flex is a peer and a friend of mine, that’s one of those things that if I were to tell the young 13, 14-year-old kid who was aspiring to be a DJ that one day I’d be standing side-by-side with Flex — I wouldn’t believe it.” Check out Drama’s appearance on Sway in the Morning below.

Cassidy On His Impact: “I Made It More Competitive”

Cassidy says that he made hip-hop more competitive and lyrical. He discussed his impact on the culture during an interview on The Bootleg Kev Podcast while reflecting on the studio session for “6 Minutes.” The New York rapper also argued that his 2005 hit single, “I’m a Hustla,” inspired tons of other songs at the time, including 50 Cent’s “I Get Money.”

“I was in New York, and Wayne came through,” Cassidy began. “I was in the studio with Fab a lot back then; so Fab came through the studio. Like, we really locked in. We wasn’t really like sending records or nothing like that. We really locked in and made it happen. I was the one that put that record together. It wasn’t like a label thing or something like that.”

He continued: “I knew Wayne was rapping at the time and I knew that Fab was rapping at the time so if all of us came and went crazy like that, no hook, it don’t even gotta be about no hook, tryna make a hit record, I know we can do that. That’s easy. But, just talking about spitting, and I knew that would make a mark, so that’s why I wanted to put that record together. I think ever since I came out, I just changed the trajectory of how shit was going. I made it more competitive, made you have to be more lyrical, made you have to have more punchlines and lyrics, and piece up more syllables just to sound like you was spittin’. Because before, you ain’t have nothin’ else to compare it to, but when you can listen to me doing it like this, if you supposed to be lyrical, you gotta be doing it to a certain level. So around that time I came out, you started to see a lot of people change.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Cassidy discussed collaborating with R. Kelly while admitting he regrets not getting to know him better. He also recalled a wild story about DMX showing him a scorpion.
