STARZ Early Renews ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ for Fifth Season

STARZ announced today the renewal of its hit drama series Power Book III: Raising Kanan for a fifth season. Following the explosive conclusion of its third season, the series is currently in production for its fourth season in New York.

“We know that our fans can’t get enough of ‘Raising Kanan.’ As the inevitable evolution of this young man into a killer plays out, we knew we had much more backstory to share in this ever-escalating family saga,” said Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming for STARZ. “As we continue to expand the storytelling within the Power universe, we’re looking forward to how this story may intersect with other Power characters during this prequel era.”

Additionally, STARZ revealed plans for a new prequel series titled Origins, which will explore the origin story of beloved characters Ghost and Tommy from the Power franchise. This marks the fourth spin-off of the top-rated series, following Power Book II: Ghost, set to debut its final season on June 7th, Power Book IV: Force, currently filming its third season in Chicago, and Power Book III: Raising Kanan.

Power Book III: Raising Kanan delves into the early 1990s, chronicling the ruthless rise of “Kanan Stark” in the criminal underworld under the guidance of his mother, “Raquel ‘Raq’ Thomas.” Season three concluded with a gripping showdown between Kanan and Raq, featuring surprising character returns and unforeseen casualties.

Creator Sascha Penn will continue as showrunner and executive producer for the fifth season, alongside executive producers Courtney A. Kemp, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Mark Canton, and Chris Selak. Lionsgate Television produces the series for STARZ.

“BMF” Fans Roast Show’s Weak 2Pac Casting

BMF fans have voiced their frustration over the show’s weak casting and portrayal of Tupac Shakur. Actor Mason Douglas only bears a passing resemblance to Pac, while the costuming debate chose to give him what can only be described as a Spirit Halloween 2Pac costume. Online, many fans commented “WhoPac” on clips from the show’s latest episode. 2Pac does not play much of a role in the story of BMF. However, his association with the powerful crime outfit is enough to warrant a brief cameo appearance as the show’s story unfolds.

The casting of 2Pac has always been a daunting one. Anthony Mackie, now best known for his work in the MCU, has famously recalled the dread he felt announcing that he would be playing 2Pac. Overall, most depictions of the beloved rapper have not gone over well with fans. How did you feel about 2Pac in BMF? Let us know in the comments.

Starz To End Power Book II: Ghost For Cost-Cutting Reasons

However, BMF is not the only 50 Cent show grabbing disappointing headlines this week. Power Book II: Ghost will end after its upcoming fourth season. Starz announced the decision as a cost-cutting measure. “We want to contain content costs by developing more new shows versus sustaining series longer as they become more expensive,” Star CEO Jeffrey Hirsch explained.

Furthermore, Hirsch expanded on the rationale. “You look at the [Power] map and say, ‘OK, if I take one of those characters out and spin one of those out, I can bring that on to replace the Power show at half the cost.’ Now I’m putting a lot of money right to the bottom line. And I’m really not losing anything in terms of acquisition costs and subscriber viewership, because we know what those demos want,” he added. It’s not the first time money has been a factor with Ghost. Omari Hardwick revealed last year he was made an underwhelming offer to return to the franchise as the eponymous Ghost.

Omari Hardwick Says He Was Made An Offer To Return To Power

Ghost, the first spinoff of 50 Cent’s Power, was unique in that it was named after a character who does not appear in the show. During the press tour for The Mother, Omari Hardwick was asked whether he would reprise his role as Ghost. “It would have to be the perfect thing,” Hardwick lamented before revealing a shocking twist. “They asked me before to come back. They asked me in the last year and a half to come back. When I was offered this, when I was in Boston reading this script. I was in Boston saying “and then this”. And then the “then this” went to Starz and then they didn’t come back. They didn’t give me what I wanted on the “then this”. So if they gave me the “then this”…but it would need to be the right “that”.”

Despite Hardwick helping make Power what it is today, it appears that Starz wasn’t willing to pay out to get him back. Perhaps this is part of the reason that 50 Cent is looking to move away from the network. However, this is sadly nothing new. Neve Campbell did not return for 2023’s Scream 6 after being lowballed by studio executives. Despite the fact there would be no Scream franchise without Campbell, the rights owners weren’t willing to pay her a fair rate. Since leaving Power, Hardwick has enjoyed a modicum of mainstream success. He has appeared in Army of the Dead and its unreleased spinoff Lost Vegas. Furthermore, he has appeared in Fantasy Football and Pieces of Her.

“BMF” Viewership Has 50 Cent Teasing Spinoffs Again

The high viewership for season three of BMF has 50 Cent in the mood to tease new projects. “MF Up 25% in 3 day, progress is not a slow process over here. Wait till you see my two new spin off shows. GLG GreenLightGang you know the vibes. BOOM,” Fif wrote on Instagram. The Season 3 premiere brought in a million more viewers than its Season 2 counterpart. However, Fif did not reveal what the spinoffs would be about.

Elsewhere, STARZ also greenlit a fourth season for the show prior to the premiere of Season 3. “Fans can’t get enough of the history in the making that is BMF. We’re thrilled to start working on a new season that will continue bold storytelling of the legend of the Flenory brothers that has proven to resonate so deeply with our viewers,” STARZ president of original programming Kathryn Busby said.

50 Cent Challenges Kai Cenat To Prove He’s Good Enough To Appear On Power

Meanwhile, Kai Cenat will have to prove himself talented enough for a role on Power after Fif finally responded to Cenat’s request to appear on the show. “We gotta work it out. Look, we gotta make sure you can play the part, though. Look, look, look! It got to look as if shit was expensive. You gotta be dead-ass serious. I want to see you knock something off,” Fif told Cenat during a recent FaceTime call while Cenat was streaming.

Cenat first asked Fif for a role on the long-running series after meeting the G-Unit mogul at an NBA game. “Then 50 pulled back up, looking directly at me. This n-gga literally puts his hand on my shoulder — ‘Yo brah, take a picture with my little mans real quick; he f-ck with you,’” Cenat claimed of the interaction at a recent Knicks-Bucks game. “I wasn’t in the moment of time of thinking that you were right there in front of me, but I should’ve asked you, ‘Would you let me on Power, 50?’ So I need everybody to get this video to 50,” Cenat added while recounting the meeting.

Ty Dolla Sign has had a prominent rap career, but he also is jumping into the television world again. Fans of STARZ’s Power Book III: Raising Kanan series might be surprised when he pops up on their screens during episode nine, which airs today, February 2.

Here’s what to know about Ty Dolla Sign’s appearance in the Power franchise.

Who Does Ty Dolla Sign Play In ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan?’

During the recent “Home To Roost” episode of Power Book III: Raising Kanan, Ty Dolla Sign appeared as the character Clarence “Krystal Light” TK. He helps Ronnie (Grantham Coleman) as his “most trusted soldier” who is “always ready for a gunfight,” according to Complex.

In a clip that was exclusively shared with the publication earlier this week, Clarence watches Ronnie and Gabriel Ayala (Joseph Melendez) get into a fight, which was sparked by the death of the latter character’s cousin, Juliana Ayala (Rosal Colon).

Also, there could be future tension over Ty’s character of Clarence down the line, based on who he is aligned with. Earlier in the season, Ronnie killed his brother Unique, who was played by Joey Badass.

Before appearing on Raising Kanan, Ty Dolla Sign played himself on Insecure, according to his IMDb — so hopefully he gets to do more acting work on the series.

Ty Dolla Sign is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
