Killer Mike Doesn’t Seem To Mind Getting Handcuffed At The Grammys: ‘All Of My Heroes Have Been In Handcuffs’

The 2024 Grammys turned out to be a big night for rap Killer Mike. In addition to winning all three awards for which he was nominated — to the dismay of Gen Z streamers who missed out on the greatness of “A.D.I.D.A.S.” in 2003 — he was unfortunately handcuffed and detained for several hours on a misdemeanor battery charge before being released to finally celebrate his wins.

Appearing on The View on Monday (February 12), Mike explained what happened that led to his arrest and how he felt about it. According to Mike, ““Backstage was overcrowded, the winners were exuberant, and I think security got a little overzealous.” This is what led to his confrontation with a security guard, who was knocked over in the confusion.

Comparing himself to some of his Civil Rights Movement inspirations, he said, “All of my heroes have been in handcuffs: Malcolm [X], Martin [Luther King Jr.], [Nelson] Mandela, Medgar [Evers, an activist who was the NAACP’s first field secretary in Mississippi and was assassinated by white supremacists for his liberation work]. I walked out with the same dignity and respect that I walked in with, and I would implore people to just take that from it.”

However, he did feel there was one “dope” aspect to the situation. “I walked out to my wife in the rain,” he said. “It was like a romance movie. It was dope.”

Kanye West Dodges Palestine Question: “I Don’t Have Enough Information”

Kanye West says he doesn’t have an opinion on the conflict between Israel and Palestine and is more focused on the violence in his hometown of Chicago. West avoided speaking out in support of Palestine when asked about the topic during an interview with TMZ at LAX.

“I don’t have enough information on that,” Ye told the outlet. “I’m a straight up n***a from the Southside of Chicago, born in Atlanta, I don’t have enough information. It’s love for everybody. But don’t pull me into that conversation. I got 14 kids dying every week in my city. So talk to me about that.”

Despite Ye’s lack of a stance, many other artists in hip-hop have voiced their support for Palestine in recent months. West’s former collaborator, Kid Cudi, wrote that he can’t remain silent back in November. “I can’t watch what’s happening in the world and remain silent,” Cudi said in part at the time. “I can’t imagine the pain people are feeling. Seeing their entire neighborhoods bombed, losing generations of family members, parents crying over their children’s lifeless bodies, communities turning into mass graves, people digging through rubble of their homes in hopes of finding remains of their loved ones.”

Kanye West Speaks With TMZ

Elsewhere in his interview with TMZ, West discussed his past antisemitic remarks, being canceled, and much more. His comments come after Israel rejected Hamas’ cease-fire plan, last week, and committed an attack on Rafah, the city where Israel had previously told Gazans they would be safe. According to NPR, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remarked that peace could only be achieved through a “total victory” against Hamas. Be on the lookout for further updates on Kanye West on HotNewHipHop.

Little Simz “Drop 7” Review

Little Simz started her Drop EP series back in 2014, with its first five editions surrounding the release of her 2015 debut album. Drop 6 arrived in 2020, acting as a transition between her critically acclaimed studio albums, Grey Area and Sometimes I Might Be Introvert. Unlike her Inflo-produced albums, the five-track EP included production from numerous beat-makers, including Kal Banx, BLK VYNL, and St Francis Hotel.

Since 2019, Simz and Inflo have been on a 3-peat run of stellar hip hop masterpieces. They have consistently outdone themselves as one of hip hop’s most talented rapper/producer duos. In 2022, they dropped their third full-length collaboration, No Thank You. With Inflo’s help, we are currently seeing Simz at what appears to be a long-lasting creative peak. As we await her next album, Little Simz is back with Drop 7, a new EP fully produced by British musician Jakwob. It gives us an exciting glimpse into the next phase of her artistic evolution.

Little Simz Immerses Herself In New Sounds

Little Simz and Jakwob are frequent collaborators. He notably produced “Rollin’ Stone” from Sometimes I Might Be Introvert. However, this is their very first time locking in for an entire project. From Grey Area to No Thank You, Simz and Inflo built their own unique sound chemistry, but Drop 7 sees Jakwob pushing her out of her comfort zone. Little Simz explores completely new musical territory on this EP. Over the course of seven tracks, she covers a range of genres.

The first two songs blend hip hop with Brazilian funk. This sound may be new for her, but it is unsurprising considering she once rapped about being “in São Paulo eating palm hearts.” “Mood Swings” is a minimal yet energetic opening track that is dynamic in how it transitions between a calm hook and hard-hitting verses. The song seamlessly flows into “Fever,” another danceable Brazilian funk track. From there, we get hip hop bangers like the fast-paced “Torch” and the bouncy “Power.” There is also “I Ain’t Feelin’ It,” which has a wavy trap instrumental. Songs like the house fusion, “SOS” and the Jersey Club-inspired “Far Away” also test the limits of Little Simz’s sound. She traverses each of these musical styles with ease, freeing herself of artistic boundaries.

A Short Yet Adventurous Listen

With Jakwob’s multifaceted production skills, Drop 7 proves to be a short yet adventurous listen. His beats recall the aesthetic of Little Simz’s earlier work but with a more diverse soundscape. The experimental production is part of what makes this EP such an enjoyable change of pace. Still, Little Simz is always the star of her own show. Much like on Drop 6, she tries new flows and cadences.

Simz sounds more playful than ever on songs like “Fever,” where she raps in Portuguese and gives another nod to São Paulo. She proclaims herself as “International Simbi.” There is also “Torch” where she tries different voices. She playfully asks listeners if they “wanna see some more” before telling them “don’t be afraid of the bounce” as soon as the beat drops. The aptly-titled “Mood Swings” shifts between soft-spoken lyrics over muted percussion and demanding bars over explosive drums.

Simz also flexes her success and realness on “I Ain’t Feelin’ It.” On this track, she references her Top Boy character as she says, “shell, shell, shell when they see me / Shelley’s nail bar only exists on the TV.” No matter how she raps, Little Simz is always commanding in her delivery, demanding the attention of the listener. She even reaches beyond rapping as she sings on the closing track, “Far Away.”

Overall, Drop 7 comes and goes as a 15-minute listen, but its seven songs leave a lasting impression of the potential next steps in Little Simz’s creative progression. It is a quality reminder of how the Drop series has helped foster this growth. Drop 7 is ultimately satisfying as a short EP that builds anticipation for her next full-length album. The latest installment in the series hopefully signifies what is next to come from the UK wordsmith.

Screen Shot 2024 02 13 at 9.55.37 AM

Kanye West, known for his unfiltered social media presence, recently found himself in hot water after posting risqué photos of his wife, Bianca Censori, on Instagram. The controversy arose when West shared a video of Censori dancing in a barely-there outfit not once, not twice, but three times, sparking criticism from followers.

In response to the backlash, the “Stronger” rapper addressed the issue in a video captured as he walked through an airport. West defended his actions, stating, “Y’all, I just want to tell everybody I posted my wife three times on purpose. So what I’m saying is, I delivered the album. And people still in my comments talking ’bout, ‘Why you posting your wife?’ ‘Cause she makes me happy, that’s why you’re happy with the album, because I’m happy.”

Despite the criticism, West remained unapologetic and urged his followers to refrain from negative comments, declaring, “So don’t ever say nothing negative. If you don’t like my page and don’t like what I’m posting, go fk yourself. Seriously, leave me – leave the king – the fk alone. I don’t care bro. I’m going to post my wife as much as I want. Go post your wife on your f**king Instagram.”

In a subsequent interview with TMZ at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), West opened up about his financial struggles, revealing that he was on the brink of bankruptcy due to lost business deals following his controversial remarks in 2022. Despite facing adversity, West expressed resilience, emphasizing his commitment to his album and Yeezy clothing brand.

Screen Shot 2024 02 13 at 9.54.23 AM

“I’ma just be honest with y’all. I was two months from going bankrupt, and I put everything I had into it,” West stated, referring to his album and Yeezy brand. “We moved to Italy. We moved to the factories, and we survived. We survived through the cancellation.”

Despite issuing apologies for his previous remarks, West showed no remorse during the interview, maintaining his stance on showing off his wife’s body to the world.
