The first rule about going on a podcast is to not say anything that could potentially come back to haunt you later. This is easier for normal folks and harder for celebrities who are on the verge of becoming “too famous.” Unfortunately for Ayo Edebiri, she has started to reach that point!
Edebiri made headlines earlier this month when clips of her dissing JLo on a podcast resurfaced. The comedian appeared on “Scam Goddess” in 2020 when she claimed Lopez’s career is “one long scam” only to be hosting a Saturday Night Live episode featuring JLo four years later. Life comes at you fast. Luckily, JLo is being cool about it.
The singer/ Kid’s Choice Award winner told Variety that Edebiri apologized before their episode. “[Ayo] was mortified and very sweet. She came to my dressing room and apologized with tears in her eyes, saying how terrible it was that she had said those things,” Lopez told Variety. “She felt really badly and loved my performance because we had just done my soundcheck and she actually got to hear me perform. She was just like, ‘I’m so f*cking sorry, it was so awful of me.’” It seems like there is no bad blood between them now, or Edebiri is just a really good actress and can cry on command. Either way, JLo will be fine! Edebiri even poked fun at the ordeal during a sketch.
Even though Edebiri was “mortified,” Lopez said she wasn’t really offended by the comments. “It’s funny. I’ve heard similar things said about me throughout my career, so it really didn’t affect me.” Maybe now Lopez can introduce Edebiri to fellow Bostonian Ben Affleck.
This week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart contains an entry from a new name: BossMan Dlow, whose breakout single “Get In With Me” debuted at No. 68 on the chart dated Feb. 17. So, who is BossMan Dlow, and why is his song going so crazy that it’s reached the top 100 singles in streams and radio airplay in just three weeks since its release on January 19?
BossMan Dlow is a 25-year-old native of Port Salerno, Florida, who got his start in 2019, according to an interview with DJ Small Eyes. The rapper spent six months in county jail during 2020, and upon his release, turned up the frequency of his production, resulting in his 2023 mixtape Too Slippery caught fire on TikTok (naturally) with singles like “Chic Fil A,” “Rotation,” and “The Biggest.”
Dlow re-released mixtape at the end of the year as 2 Slippery, this time with the support of Alamo Records and several new songs. “Get In With Me” was released in January, becoming an instant viral favorite thanks to BossMan’s choppy, unconventional delivery and the Florida twang that turned lines like “I was bad in f*ckin’ school, now I’m tryna dodge a sentence” into trend material on TikTok.
The track quickly made the leap from trending among TikTok’s newly UMG-less collection sounds to trending on DSPs. “Get In With Me” is currently hovering at just under 5 million views on YouTube, with over 2 million streams on Spotify, suggesting that it’s going to keep growing by word-of-mouth, making BossMan a bigger name along with it.
As he told Billboard, though, he is remaining humble. “I’m still wondering how the hell a guy from Port Salerno made it this far and has a song on the Hot 100,” he said. “I’m excited to see how far the song can go, and grateful for those listening.”
Like many celebrities, Kanye West spent the weekend in Las Vegas for the Super Bowl. While there he was spotted in an Alexander McQueen mask depicting Jesus on the cross and may have even been kicked out of the big game itself. But more importantly, he dropped Vultures 1, his new collaborative album with Ty Dolla $ign. Earlier this week, Kanye West returned to LA where he caught up with TMZ. In the most particularly attention-grabbing moment of the interview, West explained how he “can’t be canceled” and that he can’t be antisemitic. But that wasn’t the only surprising revelation he made during the brief conversation. “I’ma just be honest with y’all: I was two months from going bankrupt and I put everything I had into it and we moved to Italy. We moved to the factories and we survived. We survived through the cancellation, we back No. 1.” All weekend West has been claiming that his album is “number one” in dozens of countries despite no official confirmation of that. In recent years, Grand Puba has remained relevant through his music and various ventures outside the recording studio. His work as a producer has seen him behind the boards, crafting beats for upcoming artists and established acts alike, further contributing to his legacy and financial success. Kanye West has seemingly been in legal trouble constantly for years. Some of them have been the kind of purely absurd lawsuits that grab headlines like the Donda Academy lawsuits. They claim that all the windows in the school were removed because West didn’t like glass. But much of the legal proceedings have been much more mundane and that was the case with a copyright infringement case spawning from a 2021 video West shared to social media.
Videographer Elijah Graham sued West last year for allegedly stealing a video he recorded and posting it to social media. The video was a clip of West himself discussing his wife and kids while serving meals to homeless people. The video went viral for his seemingly earnest self-reflection. “We’ve made mistakes. I’ve made mistakes. I’ve publicly done things that were not acceptable as a husband… but I’m here to change the narrative,” West says in the clip. According to Billboard, the lawsuit wasn’t being “prosecuted diligently” and Graham ultimately agreed to drop it entirely.
It’s pretty good news for West to get this legal drama off of his plate. That’s because there could be even more legal drama coming down the pipe soon. West recently released his new album Vultures with Ty Dolla Sign. After a listening party in advance of the album’s release he was called out for two uncleared samples on the album. Both the estate of Donna Summer and Black Sabbath front man Ozzy Osbourne called out West for using samples despite being denied clearance and either could pursue legal action.
Vultures is still being processed by West’s fans and critics alike. The album has received some backlash for its controversial lyrics and seemingly unfinished sound. But some fans are still riding with the project, which sports a myriad of features from some of the biggest names in rap. Kanye West is someone who has received co-signs from people who perhaps aren’t the best examples of who you want to be associated with. Overall, this was very much true during his anti-semitic era which one could argue is still ongoing. He got co-signs from the likes of Nick Fuentes, Milo, and even the creator of the Proud Boys. Although he has distanced himself from those characters, there are still some on the right who continue to praise him. One such person is none other than Candace Owens.
Overall, Owens is controversial for a plethora of reasons. Although her popularity has certainly died down since 2020, she continues to be a big name on the right. She is one of those people that will comment on everything, even if they aren’t super involved in it. Moreover, she will comment even if she does not know much about it. The type of person that would say a Tom MacDonald album is the epitome of good music. Well, her good friend Ye just dropped Vultures, and below, you can find her review.
“Congratulations, Kanye. Cancel culture has been officially cancelled,” Owens said on Twitter. So, yeah. That is pretty much it. Instead of offering up real critiques about the production, the lyrics, the features, Owens has made Vultures a culture war issue. At the end of the day, that is all art is to some people. For most, art is a way to connect with the world around you and feel something. Unfortunately, for others, it is a means to an end in the realm of politics. Engagement bait at its finest, merely packaged in a way that will rile up Ford F150 owners.
