‘Born Gangstaz’ Rapper Boss, The First Female Rapper On Def Jam, Has Reportedly Died At 54
Veteran West Coast rapper Lichelle Marie Laws, better known as ’90s pioneer Boss, has reportedly died at the age of 54. According to multiple peers via Instagram, including Bun B, DJ Premier, and Warren G, news of the vet rapper’s passing came on Monday (March 11).
Although Boss was the first female rapper signed to the short-lived Def Jam West division of the groundbreaking label, she was originally born in Detroit. She relocated to Los Angeles after graduating high school, recording early work with DJ Quik and AMG. That work caught the attention of Russell Simmons, who signed her to the then-new West Coast division of Def Jam.
Her first and only album on the label, Born Gangstaz, released on May 25, 1993, and debuted at No. 22 on the Billboard 200. It debuted at No. 3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and produced two singles: “Deeper” and “Recipe Of A Hoe.” Its ironic content made light of Boss’ middle-class upbringing with the unrelenting gangsta rap themes popular at the time in a commentary on the twisted expectations and stereotypes placed on rappers (and Black folks as a whole) in the early ’90s.
She eventually left Def Jam after the label rejected demos for a follow-up and became a radio DJ. She released two self-funded mixtapes in the 2000s. However, from 1999 on, she suffered from renal disease; in 2021, a GoFundMe created to raise $15,000 for a needed procedure was able to reach its goal only after it was publicized by NME.

No matter what circumstances Boosie Badazz finds himself in, the Louisana native always knows how to keep us laughing. Thankfully, he’s been staying out of legal trouble in recent weeks, though the “Wipe Me Down” artist has been caught up in some internet drama with streamer Adin Ross. Elsewhere, Boosie’s been in the headlines for predicting that by the time he reaches age 80, he’ll still be able to maintain a relationship with a PYT no older than 30.
Today (March 12) a video of the multi-talent outside of a popular Houston strip club surfaced online. In the clip, Boosie chats with North Carolina-born lyricist J. Cole, who was decidedly more sober than this friend. “Aye, bruh! Aye, bruh, I’mma keep it 100,” the 41-year-old shouts over the Dreamville founder. “I’m like that for real,” Boosie said, though it’s unclear exactly what he was referring to. “I already… Who you telling?” Cole responded while towering over his tipsy pal.

After a moment of hesitation, Boosie repeats himself, “I’m like that for real,” before going in for a hug. Cole’s body language looked slightly unreceptive to the physical contact, but he obliged nonetheless. “Who you telling?” the latter asked again. “Why you telling me like I don’t know?” the father of two added with a laugh as Boosie grinned from ear to ear.
J. Cole isn’t known to be a huge social butterfly, but so far in 2024, he’s been spending plenty of time outside. Besides his latest link-up with Boosie Badazz at Area 29, the “Love Yourz” artist has been on tour across America with Drake. Lil Cease has broken his silence on the allegations against Diddy. Speaking with TMZ for a new interview, he took a fairly passive stance on the Bad Boy mogul, arguing that no one knows for certain whether he’s guilty while hoping everyone “finds peace.” Diddy is facing several lawsuits pertaining to sexual misconduct with the most recent coming from Lil Rod.
“At the end of the day, a lot of things is accusations. We don’t know if it’s true or if it’s not. I’m not the one to say what’s true and what’s not. But I hope everyone finds comfort, finds peace. And that’s how I see it,” Lil Cease told the outlet.

Diddy Performs At The MTV Video Music Awards
Cease is far from the first celebrity to speak on the allegations against Diddy. Last month, Floyd Mayweather faced backlash for coming to the disgraced Bad Boy mogul’s defense during an interview with The Pivot Podcast. “I’m not gonna speak bad about P. Diddy because he’s still a Black man,” he said at the time. “Mistakes happen. I can’t say if it is or if it’s not a mistake, but things happen in life. P. Diddy’s business is P. Diddy’s business. It’s not my job or anyone else’s job to go on the internet and stomp him and kick a man when he’s down. My take on it is it’s not my business. I don’t think it’s right at all and I don’t condone it.” 50 Cent was among those to call him out for the comments.

Madonna’s The Celebration Tour has been a spectacle to witness, and folks in Inglewood, California for her Monday night performance (March 11) had a great surprise to enjoy. Moreover, the one and only Cardi B walked out onstage to rate a dance-off with the pop legend for “Vogue,” and this celebrity guest slot during this song is a staple of her shows at this point. The “CHAMPAGNE ROSÉ” collaborators held up signs reading “10” or “CHOP” as the dancers strutted their stuff. What’s more is that the Bronx rapper twerked for the crowd and for the dancers, too, and you know for a fact that she got a ten from her peers.
Overall, it was a pretty glamorous, raunchy, and above all fun performance from two dominant artists in their fields. The influence that the “Like A Virgin” icon laid down for generations to come is undeniable and deeply rooted, even if affirmation of this can come off as combative. For example, Madonna and Cardi B were actually at odds for a couple of hours thanks to a seemingly dismissive post from the former to the latter, which Cardi didn’t appreciate considering her consistent fandom. But they spoke and cleared things up, and it became apparent that it was just a simple misunderstanding.

Boosie Badazz has a bone to pick and this time it is not with another rapper. He has always been an outspoken figure in the genre for better or worse. But, in this case, he has a solid point to make here. The Louisiana MC is one of the main faces when you think of artists from the Southern state. However, the New Orleans Pelicans are not looking to cater to him, even with all of the things he has done. According to HipHopDX, Boosie has been having issues with the NBA franchise for quite some time. From what we know, it seems to stem from the “insulting” offers the organization have been dishing out.
The trap rap star went on a rant on his Instagram Live and essentially called out the franchise for being cheap. His two main gripes with the Pelicans have to do with only being paid $1,000 for a performance at the arena, as well as no courtside seats. “They don’t wanna give me no courtside tickets. That’s cold-blooded. The Pelicans, they don’t fuck with me. Not the players, just… every time I try to get courtside tickets, I can’t get courtside tickets.”

He laughed off the lowball and continued to say that the Atlanta Hawks offer way more. “[They] pay $10,000, $7,500 to perform to their artists, and courtside seats.” That is quite ludicrous, especially because he is not synonymous with Georgia nearly as much as Louisiana. Boosie even went on to reveal that they asked him to perform for an HBCU celebration with the same “cold-blooded” offer. “They wanted me to perform at the HBCU night. Them people said $1K and I’m from Louisiana. That’s crazy. I’m like, ‘That don’t come with courtside seats?’ They’re like, ‘No.’ I think I told ’em, ‘I appreciate it but I’m good. I feel like that’s an insult.’”
