Snoop Dogg & Dr. Dre “Missionary” Review

It’s been over 30 years since Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre struck gold with Doggystyle, a quintessential work in hip-hop history. Their chemistry blossomed during a pivotal era marked by seminal releases from East Coast giants like A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan, and Nas. Despite this, Snoop and Dre left much to build upon after their initial success. Their creative partnership faltered following the decline of Death Row Records, with Dre departing to establish Aftermath under Interscope, where he cemented his legacy through artists like Eminem, 50 Cent, The Game, and Kendrick Lamar. Snoop, however, never strayed far from Dre’s orbit. Even during his stints with Star Trak and No Limit, the Compton producer remained a trusted collaborator, albeit no longer an exclusive one.

On Missionary, their first collaborative album in 32 years, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre tap into the current nostalgia-driven zeitgeist in a year when the West Coast dominates the commercial rap landscape. The influence they forged in the early ’90s still serves as a blueprint for Los Angeles’ hip-hop scene in 2024. However, neither seems particularly invested in evolving the regional sound they helped pioneer. Instead, Missionary emerges as hip-hop’s equivalent of stadium rock. Dr. Dre’s production leans heavily on live instrumentation and classic samples, complementing Snoop Dogg’s larger-than-life persona. Together, they rediscover a synergy where Dre’s direction revitalizes Snoop’s performance, while Snoop pushes his own boundaries as an MC.

Snoop Dogg sounds more invigorated than he has in years. His signature laid-back delivery combines with hardened lyricism, intricate rhyme schemes, and the earned confidence of a 30-plus-year career, making this one of his most compelling recent projects. Much of the credit belongs to Dr. Dre, whose brilliance as a producer lies in his ability to amplify his collaborators’ strengths. On Missionary, Dre draws from decades of Snoop’s artistry. Tracks like “Fire” nod to the reggae influences of Snoop Lion, enhanced by Cocoa Sarai’s intoxicating hook. Meanwhile, “Sticcy Situations” updates the G-Funk sound with grungy strings and slippery synths, effortlessly aligning with their classic M.O.

Despite these highlights, the album occasionally falls short of expectations. Part of the issue lies in Snoop’s inability to challenge Dre creatively in the same way Dre elevates Snoop. Dre’s production remains top-tier, but it often feels confined to a vacuum. In a recent interview with Complex, Dre admitted that Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly—which turns ten next year—was the last hip-hop album to inspire him. This perspective explains a certain staleness in Missionary’s approach to sampling. For instance, the interpolation of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall (Part II)” on “Hard Knocks” fails to live up to the gritty East Coast sophistication in the production. Similarly, tracks like “Another Part of Me” and “Last Dance with Mary Jane” rely on familiar samples that seem tailored to Gen X with the former including an appearance from Sting. While “Last Dance with Mary Jane” has potential as a 4:20 anthem, Jelly Roll’s feature feels more suited to the Christian TikTok niche.

Despite its missteps, Missionary feels like a victorious declaration of a 30-year career, a rarity in any genre. Tracks like “Shangri-La” highlight Snoop’s swagger as he raps, “S-N-Double-O-P, my name is the f**kin’ equity/ N***a, never check for me unless you got a check for me.” Similarly, “Thank You” underscores his enduring importance to the West Coast. Despite Snoop’s humility, this album demands recognition for his contributions to hip-hop.

The chemistry between Snoop and Dre shines on tracks like “Outta the Blue,” a lyrical back-and-forth showcasing their enduring rapport. However, the true lyrical highlights occur when Snoop teams up with other legends. “Skyscrapers” featuring Method Man and Smitty, introduces a New York flavor with luxe strings and Dre’s precise percussion. Method Man, as always, proves he’s still a lyrical powerhouse. In contrast, “Gunz N Smoke,” featuring 50 Cent and Eminem, feels underwhelming, though 50 delivers one of his strongest performances in recent memory, giving both Snoop and Em a run for their money. While Missionary can’t match its predecessor in impact or innovation, it doesn’t need to. Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre have little left to prove. The torch they lit has been carried proudly by subsequent generations. Though the album occasionally lacks creative ambition, it’s a smooth, enjoyable listen that celebrates their legacy while reaffirming their enduring chemistry.

Frank Ocean fans are yearning for new music. The “Novacane” singer’s base is so desperate for some original work that one fan page kicked off a rumor of his return.

Over on X (formerly Twitter), a fan page Frank Ocean claimed that the musician was supposed to make a surprise appearance on SZA’s long-awaited SOS Deluxe: Lana album. But after the body of work was available on streaming, no vocals from Frank were to be found. Then the page alleged that SZA removed Frank Ocean’s verse “at the last minute.”

Well, in a now-deleted post, SZA chimed in to shut down the viral rumor. “LMAO now why would you even make this up,” she wrote. “Ur insane… it never existed… and don’t ever play on Frank’s name like that EVAAAA.”

Prior to SZA’s denial, users online were gathering their pitchforks and flood her comment section demanding answers. But with SZA clearing the air, the potential online firestorm was averted.

Back in July, Frank Ocean teased that he returned to the studio with an endearing selfie. However, the fruit of that creative session has yet to be put out into the world. So, Frank Ocean fans are going to need to hold out a little longer.

SOS Deluxe: Lana is out now via Top Dawg Entertainment/RCA Records. You can listen to it here.

Young Thug And Leena Sayed Speak Out Following Leaked Jail Call Controversy

Young Thug and Leena Sayed became the talk of the hip hop world on December 23. A phone conversation between the rapper and Instagram model leaked online. A conversation that took place in 2022, when Young Thug was behind bars. The rapper seemingly urges Sayed to move on and find love with someone else, but she breaks down and claims that she only wants him. Sayed has since gone on to have a child with boxer Devin Haney. Young Thug, meanwhile is dating Mariah the Scientist, who he was also seeing at the time of the phone call. Both Thug and Sayed have tried to clear the air following the leaked call.

Young Thug took to Twitter to claim that he was never romantic with Leena Sayed. The rapper says that they were merely friends, caught up in an emotional moment. “Man me and twin was talking bout some whole other serious sh*t,” he tweeted. “I don’t know y she spoke on loving other people or anything else cause ain giving no f*ck bout no h*es or n**gas.” Young Thug issued a second tweet in which he claimed that he could have had Sayed if he wanted. He doesn’t, though, since he’s with Mariah the Scientist. “I’m the capital P lol that’s my twin and nothing else,” he said in reference to Mariah.

Young Thug And Leena Sayed Denied Romance Allegations

“Never have never will lol,” Thug added, alluding to Leena Sayed. “I can have that lil sh*t right now if I wanted it. But she been pushing the p harder then n**gas lol that’s the twin… I got who I want.” Fans were taken aback by the leaked jail call, and were similarly shocked by Young Thug’s callous behavior towards Sayed. Some felt the rapper was telling the truth, while others felt he was trying to cover up his potentially unfaithful actions. Leena Sayed issued a response of her own via Instagram. The model said that her relationship with Young Thug transpired before she met Devin Haney.

“That video was before I met my bd,” Sayed said regarding Haney. “I would never talk to Thug or any other man.” Young Thug and Sayed appear to be on the same page when it comes to nothing serious having gone down between them. It is tough to deny how emotionally charged the leaked jail call is, however. Fans will have to determine for themselves whether Thug and the Instagram model are being truthful, or simply trying to save face in light of their current relationships.

Young Thug Tells Devin Haney’s Girlfriend Leena Sayed To “Move On” In Leaked Jail Call

Young Thug may be a free man, but information about his time behind bars is still being released. A jail conversation between the rapper and Instagram model Leena Sayed made the rounds on December 23. The conversation dates back to 2022, and sees Thug urge the Instagram model to “move on” from him. It’s an emotional exchange, and one that’s a bit awkward to view through a 2024 lens. Young Thug and Leena Sayed are both in long term relationships. The latter even has a child with pro boxer Devin Haney.

The conversation spans roughly eight minutes. Young Thug can clearly be seen struggling to find the right words to communicate his thoughts to Leena Sayed. He ultimately suggests that she go on and “find love” with someone else, given how complicated his legal situation was at the time. Sayed didn’t want to be with anything else however, and she made this very clear. “I don’t like anyone… I want you,” she says while tearing up. Young Thug can also be seen getting emotional, looking away from the lens and wiping his face. The conversation is rough viewing, especially considering that the rapper and the model did eventually go their separate ways.

Young Thug Has Been Dating Mariah The Scientist Since 2021

Young Thug has been in a high profile relationship with Mariah the Scientist since 2021. The start of their romance seemingly overlaps with the leaked jail call, despite the fact that Mariah supporting Thug during his trial. The latter wore a hoodie that read, “I love Mariah” in court in response. Mariah also celebrated Thug’s release during a concert. “I just wanna thank God for the day, I wanna thank you for life, light, and love,” she explained to the audience. “I wanna thank you for out family and friends, I wanna thank you for Jeff and our relationship.”

Young Thug responded to the leaked phone conversation by refuting the romance rumors. He claimed that he was merely friends with Leena Sayed, and not romantically involved. He conceded that he could have had Sayed if he wanted, but that Mariah the Scientist is the woman for him. “She been pushing the p harder then n**gas lol that’s the twin,” the rapper asserted. “I got who I want.”

New York City’s Mayor Grants Joey Bada$$ His Own Day

You aren’t going to find many more morally good people in hip-hop than Joey Bada$$. Across some of his biggest projects, especially ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADA$$, he’s been a very prominent voice against all of the injustices in America. When it comes to tangibly helping out on a broader scale, Joey’s done that. In fact, just two years ago, the MC launched his own foundation called the ImpactMENtorship Program. According to the website, “[it] provides free mentorship for men of color 18 years and older in the US (including Puerto Rico). We believe wholeheartedly that mentorship can help provide a path to professional and financial independence. In addition to career guidance, one of the most critical gifts the mentees receive is confidence.”

Joey’s got a lot of hope that this will become a success and will keep it for decades to come. He shared with REVOLT earlier this year that, “My dream is for these guys to continue to take these gems they learn, these connections they’ve gotten through this program, and to take it to the moon. I’m trying to make a path for those who otherwise wouldn’t have one. I didn’t have a mentor outside of my parental unit or [the] people who were in my everyday life.”

Mr. Adams announced this at the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development’s second annual Hip-Hop Holiday Giveaway.

It’s a gathering to help spread holiday cheer to those in need and it of course also highlighted just how much Joey means to NYC. La La Anthony, SAINt JHN, Sleepy Hallow, and Sheff G were just a few in attendance. Following the ceremony, everyone was invited to special dinner at a popular restaurant called Tatiana’s. DYCD Commissioner Keith Howard, shared, “We are thrilled to honor artist Joey Bada$$ for his commitment to DYCD and youth, and his ImpactMENtorship program.”

Snoop Dogg’s Daughter Reveals She’s Pregnant With Her First Child

Snoop Dogg’s one and only daughter, Cori Broadus, has not had the easiest path to growing up. Since the age of six she’s been diagnosed with lupus, an uncurable, chronic autoimmune disease. Following that, at the top of 2024, the 25-year-old entrepreneur began her recovery from a “severe stroke.” She’s been doing much better as of late, but as you can tell, Cori’s had a lot of roadblocks trying to bring her down. However, Snoop’s “toughest little thing” is soon to become a mother of her first child! She revealed this astounding news to E!, according to The Shade Room, and found out she was pregnant back in October.

She says that this was not planned, and it was quite the surprise. However, Cori and the rest of her family are embracing this life-changing milestone. Snoop Dogg’s daughter mentioned, “I found out Oct. 28. This baby is so unplanned, but we are soooo blessed.” With that in mind, Cori is now four months in. Due to her having lupus though, things could get dicey, doctors say. Some issues that could arise include blood clots, kidney problems, growth setbacks for the child, and more.

However, despite the possibility of these scary future problems, Cori is remaining strong throughout this journey. “God has his hands on me, and me and the baby are doing perfectly fine.” Wayne Deuce, Cori’s fiancé, is also very excited for what’s ahead of him as a father-to-be. “He knows she is going to be so beautiful, and he just can’t wait to build things for her and give her all the love in the world,” she shared.

The musical artist is also looking forward to being that protective figure in her daughter’s life. “Growing up, I wasn’t the most confident and never felt like I fit in, so just to instill all the beautiful things in her head at a young age.” As for how Snoop Dogg and the rest of the family feel, they are just as ecstatic. However, he couldn’t but joke a little bit and say that he was hoping for a grandson. Regardless, it’s going to be a beautiful little girl and we are so happy for Cori, Wayne, and the rest of the crew!

Faizon Love Argues That Comedians Shouldn’t Be Beefing Amid Katt Williams Drama

Faizon Love argued that comedians shouldn’t beef with one another while discussing Katt Williams’ controversial comments about him from earlier this year. Williams labeled Love a “fat liar” while speaking with Shannon Sharpe for a now-infamous episode of Club Shay Shay back in January. He also joked about having a pot-bellied pig named after him at the GQ Men Of The Year event in November. Love responded to Williams during a recent interview on the We Playin’ Spades podcast.

“None of us should be beefing,” Love said of comedians as a whole. “He loves me. He thinks about me all the time. These other comedians– the white ones, they don’t beef with each other.” From there, he explained that he wasn’t offended by Williams calling him “fat,” but instead the accusation that he’s a liar.

While appearing on the Club Shay Shay podcast, Williams had ranted about several other comedians. In mentioning Love, he said: “I only put on comedians that are funnier than me. Anybody tell you different is a fat Faizon liar…Faizon said that getting a Netflix special is easy, I have 12 specials, guess how many Faizon got? Zero. Why is he allowed to have conversations about real stand-up people? We do not let people who are on the juice discuss real athletes, that’s all!”

Faizon Love Discusses Katt Williams

The We Playin’ Spades podcast wasn’t the first time Love addressed the rant. Taking to social media, earlier this year, he labeled the remarks: “lunacy, and hypocrisy, and downright ignorance.” He also theorized that Williams was “calling for help.” Check out Faizon Love’s full comments on Katt Williams below.

Summer Walker Releases Video For “Heart Of A Woman” Featuring NLE Choppa

Today, GRAMMY-nominated R&B superstar Summer Walker (LVRN/Interscope Records) unveils the official music video for her latest hit song, “Heart Of A Woman.” Co-starring multi-platinum rap star NLE Choppa, the video brings to life a dramatic time-loop narrative, where Summer finds herself reliving the same day three times after her partner’s infidelity.

Drawing inspiration from her celebrated trilogy, the video connects the eras of Over ItStill Over It, and the highly anticipated Finally Over It, with each loop. The intense final sequence showcases Summer walking away from the toxic cycle—and from NLE Choppa—leaving both the relationship and its turmoil engulfed in flames.

Fans are treated to an additional surprise as the video opens with a 15 second teaser of a brand-new track, offering a first listen to what’s in store on Finally Over It. Directed by the visionary Lacey Duke, the video masterfully intertwines themes of heartbreak, growth, and empowerment.

Summer’s upcoming album, Finally Over It, marks the culmination of her Over It trilogy, which has become a defining chapter of her R&B reign. The trilogy began with her groundbreaking debut Over It in 2019 and continued with her 2021 Billboard 200 chart-topping sophomore effort Still Over It. Each project has resonated with fans, chronicling the emotional highs and lows of love and self-discovery.

In addition to the new video, Summer made her Apple Music Radio debut with her new six-episode radio series, Over It Radio. In her debut episodes, she connected with special guests like Sexyy Redd and Yung Miami, diving into topics of relationships, motherhood, and entrepreneurship, while hinting at new music on the horizon.
