Tyla’s Freeing Self-Titled Debut Is A Pulsating Party That Puts Amapiano On The Global Stage

Tyla 'Tyla' debut album review RX
Epic Records/Merle Cooper

The RX is Uproxx Music’s stamp of approval for the best albums, songs, and music stories throughout the year. Inclusion in this category is the highest distinction we can bestow, and signals the most important music being released throughout the year. The RX is the music you need, right now.

With sizzling flair and a seductive strut, Tyla arrives on the Gunna and Skillibeng-assisted “Jump” from her debut album with a bold declaration. “They never had a pretty girl from Joburg,” she quips, saluting her hometown of Johannesburg, South Africa. “See me now, and that’s what they prefer.” In just a year, Tyla went from a relatively unknown singer carving out her lane in amapiano to a Grammy winner with eyes on being a global pop star. She achieved this without a proper introduction – a showcase that dropped the curtain on a captivating performance Tyla has been itching to debut for the world.

This proper introduction arrives through her self-titled debut album and it injects a new flavor into the pop world that it has not seen before, at least the way Tyla is doing it. The DNA of the South African singer’s music is amapiano, a house music subgenre that originates from her home country. Key elements in its sound include the “log drum,” a bold, speaker-rattling bass that quite literally serves as the heartbeat of amapiano, pumping life into its listener who catches a groove at either a dance party or the comfort of their own home. Then comes high-pitched piano melodies and other percussions like a hi-hat or a deeper bass. The genre has slowly increased its presence in mainstream African music spaces thanks to ambassadors like Uncle Waffles. Records like Wizkid’s “Bad To Me,” Davido’s “Unavailable,” and Asake’s “Amapiano” have adopted the South African genre, the latter two also receiving Grammy nominations. With all eyes on her Tyla, assumed the role of the genre’s ambassadors with the goal of elevating its appeal, something she achieves with Tyla. Tyla perfectly soundtracks the party we all need as summer nears

Tyla’s push of amapiano to the world pre-dates the arrival of “Water,” her Grammy-winning hit record. The first clues that pointed to Tyla being a force to reckon with came with her previous singles “Been Thinking” and the Ayra Star-featured “Girl Next Door.” The former bubbles towards a climactic hook that opens the floodgates to a tide of head-over-heels feelings Tyla pours out to a crush. “Girl Next Door” turns down the temperature with burning pleas of desire, as Tyla and Ayra reserve hope for a waning love.

“Breathe Me” labels a kiss from Tyla the source of life her companion needs to continue onward. It’s equal parts inviting and daring, seductive and tempting, making for a fascinating love affair. “Jump” brings the heat and pulls bodies, burnished with sweat, closer together. “On My Body” positions Tyla and Becky G as dominating damsels, corralling their love interests and reeling them in for a showstopping presentation. Dancefloor lights bounce on their bodies and the percussion syncs with rising heartbeats.

However, Tyla is more than just a party — it’s a declaration of the singer’s pop stardom. For Tyla, it’s the start of a new chapter, one where she breaks free from past limitations and trades in co-dependency for autonomy. On “No. 1,” Tyla and Tems bask in the warmth of freedom. With “Priorities,” Tyla rescues herself from the neverending freefall of people-pleasing. The self-prioritizing also spills in “Truth Or Dare,” a dazzling single that sees Tyla mock and brush off an ex who returned to re-establish their relationship after the singer’s rise in popularity. She

Tyla lives at the cusp of the climax. Whether it’s on the dancefloor, in her love life, or in her music, Tyla is a dominant force. Step aside and allow her to operate or dare to step in the spotlight with her and complement what she brings to the table. “Water,” at both its surface and its deeper, suggestive center, is the daring request to be that adequate complement. The single is the perfect representation of who Tyla is and what it’s like to be in close proximity. As for the album, it’s a free debut that uses a pulsating amapiano party to put the genre on the global stage and set Tyla free into an era where she dominates for the foreseeable future.

Tyla And Travis Scott’s ‘Water (Remix)’ Video Is Dripping In Sexual Chemistry, Making The Steamy Visual Well Worth The Wait

The jury is still out on what Tyla’s hit song “Water” is actually about. What’s no longer up for speculation is whether the remix featuring Travis Scott will receive an official video. Last night (March 18), the long-awaited visual for the track formerly dropped on Tyla’s YouTube page.

As one of the listed tracks on her forthcoming self-titled album, the pressure was on to deliver something worth talking about, and that they did. The steamy video was well worth the wait. Tyla and Scott’s sexual chemistry is dripping throughout the visual, and that tension flows well into Scott’s guest verse.

“You keep it wet, that’s a real-life challenge / All that ass gotta pour out of gallons / Beauty in the top, keep balance / She in her bag, she wildin’ / You ain’t gotta hide your talent / Even if you did, I bet I find it / You know I’m comin’ from the H / But it’s +27 when I dial in,” raps Scott.

The flirty lyrics referencing South Africa’s international country code (Tyla’s home country) surely make the onscreen tension even more believable. Whether it is all for the camera or a sprinkle of actual romance doesn’t matter. All that matters is the fantasy has been gathered, packaged, and bottled to refresh the audience’s thirst for more Tyla.

Will Tyla & Travis Scott Drop A Video For ‘Water?’

It looks like the “Water Challenge” on social media hasn’t run dry just yet. According to Tyla, the remix of her breakout single “Water” featuring Travis Scott will receive a music video. While sitting for a Complex segment, “What’s In Your Phone?” the South African star confirmed that the video is done (after making sure it was okay for her to share that information with her team), which means the wait is officially on.

The news of the remix video follows the announcement of her self-titled debut album, which is due on March 1 via Fax and Epic Records. Earlier this month, Tyla released the video for “Truth Or Dare,” the album’s second single, and attended her first-ever Grammy Awards ceremony as she was nominated for — and won — Best African Music Performance for “Water.”

“Water” was not only Tyla’s first top-ten-charting hit in the US, peaking at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, but it was also the first song by a South African solo artist to enter the Hot 100 in 55 years following Hugh Masekela’s “Grazing in the Grass” in 1968. Tyla is also the youngest South African artist with that distinction, as Maskela was 29 in 1968.

As for when the “Water” remix video officially drops, there’s no word yet — but the odds are high it’ll be sometime before the release of Tyla to ensure maximum interest in Tyla’s debut album.

How Did Tyla & Travis Scott’s ‘Water’ Remix Come Together?

Tyla is on fire with her breakthrough single “Water,” which peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 last week. In mid-November, the South African artist added to the song’s sprawling influence with a remix featuring Travis Scott last month. And on Wednesday, December 6, Complex shared an interview with Tyla in which she explained how the eye-popping collaboration came together.

“I didn’t really think of doing a remix,” she said. “I was like, ‘Nah, like, let’s just have ‘Water.’ It’s cool. Whatever.’ But then, people were reaching out, and I was like, ‘Oh my word, oh my word.’ And I started getting excited, and then Travis reached out, and I literally couldn’t — like, I could not say no. His music is crazy. I’ve always loved his sound and just his vibe in general. So after he reached out, we sent him that open verse, and he came back and he killed it, you know. He killed it.”

Tyla and Scott’s “Water” remix will be on Tyla’s self-titled debut album, due out March 1, 2024. She will also embark on a self-titled headlining tour, beginning in Oslo, Norway on March 21, 2024 and snaking through Europe before staging a North American leg from April 22 to May 28.

“Everything that’s happening has surpassed anything I could have dreamt of,” Tyla captioned her Instagram post announcing the album last week. “African music is going global and I’m so blessed to be one of the artists pushing the culture. I’ve been working on my sound for 2 years now and I’m so ready for the world to hear it. I cannot wait for the world to experience an African Popstar.”

Tyla is out 3/1/2024 via Fax/Epic Records. Find more information here.

What Is Tyla’s ‘Water’ Song About?

Burna Boy, Bad Bunny, and Dua Lipa are part of a wave of international artists who have dominated the American charts. Another is Tyla. Thanks to her viral song, “Water,” the Grammy Award nominee is bringing the flair of Johannesburg, South Africa to every corner of the globe. The song’s fusion of pop, R&B, Afrobeats, and amapiano has made Tyla a new artist to watch.

But what is the song actually about? Let’s just say when Tyla sings the chorus — “Make me sweat, make me hotter / Make me lose my breath, make me water / Make me sweat, make me hotter / Make me lose my breath, make me water” — it’s more than her just being steamy.

Tyla hasn’t said what the record is about, but the lyrics leave little room for interpretation. Fans online have given their attempts at the “Water Challenge,” in which they tried to recreate the drenching dance break in the video. Some offered a theory: It’s about a woman’s desire to reach a squirting orgasm. Unfortunately, Travis Scott didn’t lean into the concept when he appeared on the song’s official remix.

This wouldn’t be the first time a raunchy sex song was cleverly masked by poetic songwriting. Aaliyah’s “Rock The Boat,” Britney Spears’ “If U Seek Amy,” and Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar On Me” are just a few examples.

Who Is On Tyla’s ‘Water’ Remix?

Tyla is having a big moment right now. The South African singer currently has the most successful song of her career thanks to her latest release “Water.” The track has grown to be a favorite on social media platforms like TikTok where it has its own challenge. The song has also brought Tyla to the late-night TV spotlight as she recently performed “Water” on The Tonight Show and it earned her a Grammy nomination at the 2024 award show. As expected, Tyla recently announced a remix to “Water” with a surprise guest, and hours before it gets released, we now know who that artist is.

Who Is On Tyla’s “Water” Remix?

In what will be her biggest collaboration yet, Tyla will get an assist from Travis Scott for the remix of “Water.” Truthfully, it’s not the name many expected as the production behind “Water,” which is amapiano-inspired, is one that is outside Travis’ expected sound. With that said, it remains to be seen how the remix will sound, but it will surely be a boost for Tyla as the song currently sits at No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100.

When Does Tyla’s “Water” Remix With Travis Scott Come Out?

Tyla and Travis Scott’s “Water” remix will be released on November 17 at 12am EST/9pm PST. The song will be available on streaming platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, YouTube, and more.

Janelle Monae Cools Off With Sultry Style In “Water Slide” Music Video

Janelle Monáe’s “Water Slide” is one of the most infectious, gorgeous, and summery songs on her latest album, The Age Of Pleasure. Of course, that’s quite a feat, since those three descriptors basically run through the entire project without skipping a single beat. Still, it’s fitting that one of the LP’s catchiest and most easy-going cuts got the official music video treatment, which just released on Friday (July 7). Moreover, Monae and a big group of friends spend a refreshing and scantily-clad day at the pool, with some wearing nothing but pixels over themselves. With an unbearably hot summer upon us, this is exactly the kind of video that we needed.

Visually, it’s quite old-school, with a grainy look, an old-school aspect ratio, and occasional frame flashes and lens flares that make you feel like you’re watching a vintage film recording of a group of friends’ day in the sun. Also, some of the underwater shots, however brief, are beautifully crisp, and it’s probably the inspiration (or rather, the same shot) for the album cover itself. Janelle Monae plays guitar, waters a plant that becomes a dancing boxer-clad human, enjoys a smoke, and dances the day away in “Water Slide.”

Furthermore, this will probably remind fans of her previous music video for The Age Of Pleasure, “Lipstick Lover.” That track is another highlight off the album, and this one’s visuals match the energy of the instrumental so well. For example, the drums and guitar give the track a beach-infused reggae leaning that keeps your body swaying from side to side. As expected, Janelle Monae’s vocal harmonies and melodies are as sweet as they are powerful, and the chorus refrain will get stuck in your head.

Meanwhile, this video also features some special guests in Angelica Ross and Jillian Mercado. However, one that hip-hop fans might’ve missed but is impossible not to talk about is rising star JELEEL! He does a fantastic spin dive in the water before emerging with a rose between his teeth for Monae. All in all, “Water Slide” will have you diving into a body of water as fast as possible. Check out the video with the link below and check back in with HNHH for the latest news and updates on Janelle Monae.

GloRilla’s Former Bodyguard Fired For Not Beating Up Person Who Threw Water

GloRilla’s former bodyguard said that she fired him for not going back to beat up the person who threw water at her at an Oakland venue. Moreover, he maintained that he did his job in the moment: protecting Glo and making sure that she got out of there safely. However, the Memphis MC apparently told him to go back to the venue and make a vengeful attack on the culprit. “I did my job, it’s complete,” he said during a video rant. To be fair, he said that he would’ve been much harsher to the crowd if they actually posed a threat or attacked them outright.

However, he stood by the fact that the person who threw the water was throwing it from the sides in the crowd. As such, he didn’t have much reason to get confrontational, as they weren’t directly in the rapper’s face. In fact, the former bodyguard said that he wouldn’t risk losing his license or catching an assault charge for petty and unwarranted retaliation. It’s not like Glo was scared or directly in danger, and the bodyguard defended the fact that he did what he had to do and nothing more.

GloRilla’s Former Bodyguard Speaks On Why He Was Fired

Moreover, the incident stemmed from miscommunication between the “F.N.F.” star’s camp, the venue promoters, and the crowd. According to the promoters, they paid GloRilla to perform, not host or do a walk-through, and her team agreed. As such, the venue promoted the event as a performance, not just any old appearance. However, both Yo Gotti and GloRilla clapped back and said that they didn’t come to such an agreement. Not only that, but they claimed that the promoters did not pay them enough for an actual performance.

“$30K to perform,” the CMG wrote alongside laughing emojis on Instagram. “[You] must [have] booked Lil Glo, NOT Big Glo #CMG.” Furthermore, Glo took to Twitter to voice her frustration. “Ain’t no ho spit on s**t!!!!!! Ask dat ho how ha face feel doe. No way you think I’m performing when you paid for a hosting, crazy tail self.” If the bodyguard’s story is correct, one thing’s for sure: going back to beat a disappointed fan up would’ve been an even bigger mess to clean up. Regardless, stick around on HNHH for the latest news on GloRilla.
