Tyler, The Creator’s ‘Chromakopia’ Rollout Put The Fan First — As Every Artist Should

Earlier this week, I wrote about Tyler The Creator’s new album Chromakopia potentially bring back Tuesday album releases, but as it turns out, the entire rollout has been an extended exercise in how artists can benefit from putting fans first. Since announcing the unusual release date, he also announced a listening event at Intuit Dome in Inglewood for $5, where he would play the album and “perform.”

When you think about it, it’s hilarious that Tyler The Creator, who was seemingly so antisocial at the outset of his career, has become a paragon of “fans-first” thinking in hip-hop. After all, this was the destructive dynamo that told us, “Kill people, burn sh*t, f*ck school” along with his merry band of misfit troublemakers, Odd Future.

But that was where the unbreakable bond between Tyler and his fans first started. They related to his mischievous brand of anti-establishment mayhem because they recognized — instinctively, if not intellectually — that it came from Tyler’s own fandom. The Hawthorne native was as much one of the kids who tuned into everything his favorite artists did as he now is the artist fans tune into.

While older hip-hop heads might not have understood this, Tyler’s rage against the machine came from a place of genuine love for the art of hip-hop, and a frustration with the way corporations have stripped it of its adventurous, rebellious spirit in favor of cashing in on formulas and algorithms designed to make the most money.

He’s still rebelling on behalf of fans; the Monday release flies in the face of the Friday release convention, which benefits certain streamers but not those of us who want to discuss and dissect new music with the people we see most often, like coworkers and classmates. While this could have an adverse effect on his streaming metrics, losing three counting days of the sales week, and dropping at 6 AM, the release allows fans to wake up to a new release, rather than having to stay up all night to be among the first to hear.

The listening session makes his performance accessible to fans who probably can’t manage hundreds of dollars for tickets, let alone Ticketmaster’s ridiculous, tacked-on fees. Even billing the concert as a listening event feels a bit like Tyler thumbing his nose at a certain other so-called genius who’s taken to “performing” in a mask while simply playing his records and walking around arena floors and festival stages. Tyler seems to be saying, “Hey, if you’re going to do that, at least tell folks what they’re getting up front.” Meanwhile, he seems to be saluting another West Coast rap standout who recently put on a big show for the fans, acknowledging that it’s a good idea, but there should be some value added — like getting to hear an all-new album before its release.

Tyler even made the vinyl test pressing available for purchase, rather than forcing fans to wait for months for the finalized pressings as has become common these days. In addition to being reasonably priced, these records also come with detailed specs for vinyl collectors. That’s the sort of quality fans have come to expect from the purveyor of the GOLF collection.

Meanwhile, from the announcement of the album to the surprise concert to the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival lineup reveal, the rollout has been unassuming, not demanding the spotlight for months as T rolls out singles to see which one sticks.

And that lineup? What a lineup! I called Camp Flog Gnaw one of America’s best festivals last year, and a huge part of that was the attention to detail in the artist curation. It’s eclectic, but there’s still a vibe. It’s underground, but adds enough stars to make it worth the price of admission. It prominently features Tyler’s friends and collaborators, but also showcases what The Creator himself has found inspiring and influential for the past year or so, highlighting once again how much of a fan he is. In an increasingly crowded festival space, Flog Gnaw sets itself apart by focusing on music discovery and love for the art rather than metrics.

That’s why Tyler The Creator has entered the conversation as one of the top names in not just hip-hop, but music overall. Because he’s a fan of music — not just one genre or artist, but the process of finding and enjoying music — he knows what fans want, and can give it to them. In return, they give him the accolades, the appreciation, and yes, the payouts that major labels and promoters have been struggling to achieve with their ongoing obsession with efficiency and profit growth. Tyler has laid out the blueprint for the future of music. As it happens, it’s just the oldest, most basic strategy, one his peers and contemporaries never should have gone away from: Put the fans first.

Childish Gambino Is One Of Tyler The Creator’s Many Surprise Guests On His New Album, ‘Chromakopia’

Tyler The Creator’s new album Chromakopia just dropped this morning (October 28). The project is full of features, but none of them are credited on the tracklist, so fans have been having fun figuring out who guests on the album.

“Sticky” is particularly stacked, and fans are also convinced they hear Childish Gambino on “I Killed You.” Another observation, albeit a less prominent one, is that Gambino can also be heard on the following track, “Judge Judy.” (For what it’s worth, Gambino is credited on both songs on Genius.)

Glover also joined Tyler at his Coachella set earlier this year. There, Tyler spoke about the rags-to-riches nature of their relationship, saying, “You know what’s sick? I used to hate that n****. Seriously, I don’t know why, I gotta go to therapy to figure it out. But then this n**** put this song called ‘Urn’ out, U-R-N. It was so undeniable, n****, I was at conflict with myself. I’m like, ‘F*ck, how could a n**** that I hate so much be so good?’ And now, the tables have turned and this n**** barely returns my calls. Donald, I f*ck with you. Thank you for putting out sh*t that exceeds expectations or the perception that n****s like us should make. I love you, thank you for existing, and thank you for coming out.”

Tyler The Creator’s New Song ‘Sticky’ Is So Stacked, Featuring GloRilla, Sexyy Red, Lil Wayne, Timbaland, And Young Buck

This Monday morning is a bit unusual, as music fans had something to look forward to at 6 a.m. ET: The release of a high-profile new album. Tyler The Creator just dropped his new project, Chromakopia, this morning, but not at midnight as is usual. As he explained, “YOU CAN LISTEN TO IT WHEN YOU WAKE UP, YOU DONT HAVE TO DEPRIVE YOURSELF OF SLEEP FOR SOMETHING THAT IS GOING TO BE THERE WHEN YOU WAKE UP.”

Well, people have woken up and listened, and one track many have been immediately struck by is “Sticky,” due to its tremendous star power.

The songs, as displayed on streaming platforms, do not have credited featured artists. But, credited as songwriters on the track, according to the song’s credits as seen on Spotify, are GloRilla, Sexyy Red, Lil Wayne, Timbaland, and Young Buck.

Others have noted that artists also featured across the project include Childish Gambino, Daniel Caeser, Teezo Touchdown, ScHoolBoy Q, and Doechii. Tyler hosted a listening party for the album last night, but as for actual performances, he has a tour that is set to kick off in February 2025.

Tyler The Creator Has Been Accused Of Making ‘Racist Sh*t’ Following The Release Of His Latest Single ‘Thought I Was Dead’

Tyler The Creator has been called many things throughout his career. But, a new accusation thrown onto the “St. Chroma” rapper’s jacket has fans hip-hop fans furious.

A line in Tyler The Creator’s latest Chromakopia single, “Thought I Was Dead,” didn’t sit well with famed producer Mike Dean. “White boys mockin’ this sh*t and y’all mad at me? Y’all can suck my d*ck / Pull up old tweets, pull up old t-shirts, all that, I moonwalk over that b*tch,” raps Tyler in the track’s opening verse.

Shortly after learning about the line, in an Instagram comment (viewable here) Mike Dean accused Tyler’s bars of being racist. “Racist sh*t,” he wrote.

Tyler hasn’t responded to Mike Dean’s call-out. However, users online have turned to script on Mike Dean. “Mike Dean is much of a troll as Tyler don’t take this serious,” penned one user.

Others stood in full support of Tyler’s bar, alleging that it was a necessary did at Lil Yachty’s artist Ian.

“Racist for stating FACTS? This gaslighting ass sh*t outta here,” chimed another.

“Tyler’s comments were thought-provoking and deserve thoughtful discussion. As an artist, he often uses provocative language to challenge perspectives,” added another.

This isn’t the first time Tyler has supposedly addressed Ian’s entry into the culture. Back in August, during an appearance on SpringHill’s Mavericks With Mav Carter podcast seemingly called out those propping Ian up, saying: “[There’s] this white kid, regular Caucasian man, and he’s like mocking Future and Gucci Mane… like rap music. People are like, ‘this sh*t hard.’ It’s not even like satire… I hold rap music so close to my heart. This sh*t changed my life and everyone’s life around me.”

Tyler The Creator Seemingly Doubles Down On ian Criticism In New “CHROMAKOPIA” Snippet

Tyler The Creator is dropping his new album CHROMAKOPIA in less than 24 hours, and he’s still giving fans more material to hype them up even further. His latest is a snippet (or perhaps a full track? We’ll see…) titled “THOUGHT I WAS DEAD,” where he seems to make reference to his comments earlier this year about white rappers mocking hip-hop culture. “White boys mocking this s**t, and y’all mad at me? Y’all can suck my d**k,” the Hawthorne native rapped on the cut. Many fans online interpreted this criticism in a Maverick Carter interview as shots towards ian, although Tyler never named him. As such, this is still a pretty speculative narrative.

“This white kid, regular Caucasian man, and he’s, like, mocking Future and Gucci Mane. Like… rap music,” Tyler, The Creator told Maverick Carter earlier this year. “And people are like, ‘This s**t hard.’ […] This is, like… weird. Something about it don’t even sit well with me in comparison to someone like a Mac Miller or Eminem, who didn’t seem like they was mocking it. They had a genuine love for it, and they were still big.”

Tyler The Creator Seems To Address His Alleged ian Comments

While ian’s manager took this as a criticism of his client specifically, there’s still plausible deniability, even though the Internet already put two and two together and are running with this narrative. Still, neither Tyler, The Creator nor ian himself have clarified this outright, so maybe he’s talking about someone else or it’s not deep enough to really make a fuss over. Also, it’s curious that this is on what seems to be a CHROMAKOPIA song, as we don’t know when it was recorded or if this really responds to the Maverick Carter interview backlash.

Nevertheless, people have a lot of takes about this criticism, and feel free to make yours known down in the comments section below. In the meantime, Tyler, The Creator is probably getting ready for his CHROMAKOPIA listening event in Los Angeles later today (Sunday, October 27). As for ian, he recently dropped the Goodbye Horses album, another collection of trap bangers. We’ll see if there’s anything else to this already speculative story…

Tyler, The Creator Stays Noided On Our New “Fire Emoji” Playlist Update: Stream

October’s almost over, and we’re lucky we got some great hip-hop to close the month out on our latest Fire Emoji playlist update, which rounded up the best of the best drops this week. Kicking things off is Tyler, The Creator with his lead CHROMAKOPIA single, “Noid.” With a raw Zamrock sample, a creative beat switch, and a jam-packed journey of musical embellishments, fans can’t wait to hear this on tour alongside Lil Yachty and Paris Texas. Speaking of the Los Angeles duo, they also dropped a song this week titled “RökKOut.” Their laidback chemistry fits really well with a peppy drum beat and some amazing bass and synth lines.

As for other new songs on Fire Emoji this week, The Alchemist and ScHoolboy Q enlisted Freddie Gibbs for “Ferraris In The Rain Part 2.” The Big Boss Rabbit does a great job of riding Uncle Al’s original beat and adds some new life to the already solid cut. Wiz Khalifa also joins the list, building up Kush + Orange Juice 2 hype with the woozy new record “Hide It” with Don Toliver. If you’re looking for something a bit more gritty, look no further than Gucci Mane and Sexyy Red’s slow-burning but hard-hitting collab, “You Don’t Love Me.”

HNHH Fire Emoji Playlist: Stream

For the fans of more soulful hip-hop out there, Aminé recently fulfilled that hunger with a new two-pack, “Passenger Princess / Adam.” The former of those features Smino and sees them lust for a woman in their lives with some unsurprisingly impressive flow displays. Moving onto new projects on Fire Emoji, Hunxho recently unveiled his latest project, Thank God. It’s a nice balance of more melancholy street fare such as “Hot Boy” featuring Lil Durk and more boisterous and brash trap bangers.

In addition, we have some deluxe editions to talk about this week: G Herbo’s Big Swerv 2.0 and Megan Thee Stallion’s MEGAN: ACT II. If you want a taster for both, we’d recommend the passionate “Ball” with Meek Mill for the former and the smooth “Bigger In Texas” for the latter. Let us know what your favorite Fire Emoji inclusion was this week, as well as what else we missed, down in the comments section below. As always, come back to HNHH for the latest hip-hop releases around the clock.

Tyler The Creator Is Releasing His Album ‘Chromakopia’ At An Odd Time (But Not Before His Giant Listening Party)

Tyler The Creator has kept the promotional cycle for his new album Chromakopia short and sweet. He officially announced the project last week, and it’ll be out on October 28. Yes, that’s a Monday, so the project isn’t coming out on a Friday like most major new releases do.

Not only is the album coming out on Monday, but Tyler announced yesterday (October 23) that it’s coming out at 6 a.m. ET that day… again, different from the midnight releases of most projects.

On top of that, Tyler is also hosting a listening party. He announced that today, explaining on social media, “Los Angeles I’m playing my album in full for you at the Intuit Dome. I will not be performing, I will be standing in the middle of the venue lip syncing to the new sounds. This event costs $5.”

Doors for the show are at 7 p.m. PT and the event starts at 8. As for those $5 tickets, there’s an American Express pre-sale at 9 a.m. PT on October 25, followed by a general on-sale at 10 a.m. PT. More information is available on the album website.

Tyler seems to have had a change of heart when it comes to the listening party strategy. Kanye West has notably taken to hosting these types of events in recent years, and in response to a recent one, Tyler commented, “n**** u was right there just say the words!!!!!!!! [heart-eyes emojis].”

Chromakopia is out 10/28 via Columbia Records. Find more information here.

Joining Tyler, the Creator, in the video is The Bear star Ayo Edebiri, who presents a transitioning iPhone to a gun. Additionally, Frank Ocean can be heard in the single’s opening.

Now, he’s breaking away from conventions when it comes to release date and time.

Tyler, The Creator already confirmed that CHROMAKOPIA is dropping on October 28. A Monday, which goes against the traditional rollout date of Friday. Tyler, The Creator Will Drop On A Monday Morning

Tyler, The Creator has managed the rare feat of generating lots of buzz with minimal information. Fans everywhere have scrambled to make sense of his new look, which includes a black-and-white scheme and a striking face mask. The lead single, “NOID,” pays tribute to Kanye West’s “Runaway” while setting up a seeming dystopian narrative surrounding Tyler’s new character. The precision, and the intentionality and the execution of the rollout so far has been undeniable.

Shortly before confirming the Monday morning release time, Tyler, The Creator unveiled plans for the CHROMAKOPIA world tour. The tour kicks off February 4, 2025, and will see the rapper go to Europe, Canada, Australia, and more. Lil Yachty and Paris Texas will serve as the opening acts. Tyler hasn’t yet revealed who will appear on CHROMAKOPIA (perhaps Yachty and Paris?), but given everything we’ve seen so far, we get the feeling he will reveal the features in a striking fashion.
