The 1999 VMAs Were A Culmination Of Hip Hop’s Transcendence

The 1999 VMAs Were A Culmination Of Hip Hop’s Transcendence

Written by: Zachary Draves

Twenty-five years ago, the MTV Video Music Awards celebrated the diversity of hip hop during an impactful year.

By the dawn of the new millennium, hip-hop was at a crossroads.

There was still a significant void after the killings of Tupac Shakur in 1996 and the Notorious B.I.G. in 1997. Their deaths stemmed from an intense east coast/west coast turf war where nobody dared to cross enemy lines.

Allegiances were seemingly set in stone, but cracks started to show in 1999. There was plenty of talent to go around regardless of the fealty of one particular region.

Jay Z, Nas, and DMX respectively took over New York. Eminem put Detroit on the map with the release of The Slim Shady LP. Snoop Dogg found peace with Master P’s No Limit Records after tumultuous tenure with Death Row Records and the release of his No Limit debut No Limit Top Dogg. Cash Money Records featuring Lil Wayne, B.G, the Hot Boys, and Juvenile helped to sustain the south.

The phenomena of nu-metal, a unique blend of rap, heavy metal, and grunge, were pervasive with Limp Bizkit and Korn.

Women in hip hop reached critical mass in 1999. Lauryn Hill was riding high off the success of her groundbreaking album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Lil Kim was coming into her own post Biggie with her blistering lyricism and fashion sense as she prepped for her second album The Notorious K.I.M. Missy Elliot held double duty as a trendsetting artist, producer, and music video revolutionary with her sophomore album Da Real World. TLC came back from a five year hiatus with their fan appreciation album Fanmail

The moral panic surrounding the perceived social ills of popular music and its connection with youth culture had shifted towards the satanism of Marilyn Manson and so called “goth music”. In the aftermath of that year’s shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado the shooters were accused of being influenced by the music.

A few years prior it was “gangsta rap” being subjected to congressional hearings and organized boycotts of  Time Warner and other major labels by civic leaders such as C. Delores Tucker alongside former Reagan Education Secretary William Bennett.

By 1999, hip hop was an embedded part of American popular culture. It was infused into everything from movies, commercials, sports, and fashion.

Those elements came to the fore at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City during some notable moments.

Lauryn Hill took home four awards, including the VMA for the coveted Video Of The Year for “Doo Wop (That Thing).”

Lil Kim rocked a lavender pasties outfit inspired by Missy Elliot, and Diana Ross jiggled her breast while presenting the award for Best Hip Hop Video alongside Mary J. Blige, where The Beastie Boys won for their song ”Intergalactic”

It was during the acceptance speech that Adam Horovitz made a plea about respect for women and girls and safety at music festivals after the horrific acts of violence on display at that summer’s Woodstock 99, where there were multiple incidents of sexual assault.

In a heartfelt moment, Will Smith introduced Afeni Shakur (Tupac mother’s) and Voletta Wallace (Biggie’s mother) to present the award for Best Rap Video, which went to Jay Z for “Can I Get A…” ft. Ja Rule and Amil off the Rush Hour soundtrack.

Eminem won for Best New Artist Video for “My Name Is” while also performing alongside Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre. TLC performed “No Scrubs,” and the video won for Best Group Video.

In replacement of DMX, who was scheduled to perform, Jay Z took the stage and performed “It’s A Hard Knock Life”, “Can I Get A…”, and “Jigga My N—-”.

The 99 VMAs were more than an annual award ceremony honoring the best in music at the dawn of a new century; they solidified hip hop’s forever place in the broader culture.

There wasn’t a need for any singular voice or even a handful to carry the weight, a collection of artists with a vast array of skills from all regions of the country kept the music alive.

Diamond The Body Apologizes To Tesehki After Getting Her Tooth Knocked Out

For the Baddies fans out there, you know that things can get messy real quick. One recent fight in the reality TV show’s orbit got particularly bloody, as Tesehki allegedly knocked out Diamond The Body’s tooth at the franchise’s reunion. This followed a whole lot of social media clowning and fights which even escalated into a boxing challenge that is more ironic in hindsight than anything. The gloves really did come off, huh? Nevertheless, it seems like Diamond regrets what happened here, as she recently took to Instagram to bury the hatchet.

“Just because I didn’t mean any harm in anything I said online and because it was all jokes to me doesn’t mean it wasn’t received with harm,” Diamond’s apology to Chrisean Rock’s sister and others began. “I can’t determine how someone took in wat I said or how it made them feel … so for that I have to take accountability.. sorry to everyone that I’ve trolled on a tv show or online after a tv show !! I can always admit when I’m wrong !!

I’m forever grateful to Zeus Network I did wat needed to be done. I got the clout I was looking for now yall stream my music.” Then, Tesehki seemed to reply to this message on Instagram with a somewhat surprising comment: “I accept your apology.”

Meanwhile, Natalie Nunn had posed with Diamond’s tooth after the Tesehki fight to mock her. “What happened to the pose for me post,” she mockingly captioned her video with the tooth. “Hahahaha diamond the body your amazing but your dentist sucks [three laughing-crying emojis] ur teeth was falling out left and right !! Tesehki Knocks Diamond The Body’s Tooth Out At “Baddies” Reunion

Tesehki is certainly no stranger to throwing hands, and it looks like that’s exactly what happened at the Baddies Caribbean reunion last night. Today, the personality took to social media to announce that she got into a physical altercation with Diamond The Body. While it remains unclear exactly what led up to the altercation, Diamond has been taunting Tesehki on social media for weeks. Recently, she even urged Tesehki to fight for her sister’s son, Chrisean Jr.

Clearly, Tesehki didn’t appreciate this at all, and ultimately decided to address it at the reunion. In photos shared on Diamond’s Instagram Story earlier today, she’s seen with a bloody lip and a missing tooth. “I lost guys REAL BAD !! Sorry,” she wrote. “She really broke my face yall my lip is tore open and my tooth missin pray for me.”

Tesehki Reveals She Got Into Physical Altercation With Diamond The Body

While this is obviously very concerning, Diamond appears to be approaching the situation with a sense of humor. Today, she shared various clips and photos of her injuries from the hospital. “Now I’m looking like her sister,” she wrote alongside a laughing emoji. She also assured fans that she’s doing okay now, and only has to worry about replacing her missing tooth. “I’m good guys I promise,” she explained. “I just left the hospital got a couple stitches nothings broke but I do need a new tooth.”

Diamond even plans to perform tonight in Virginia despite her injuries. Fans hope that she has a speedy recovery, and sorts out her issues with Tesehki sooner rather than later. I think the thing is the misconception was, and this is what I tell people and l’ve told people in private and I’ll say this publicly, Skip gave me the opportunity.” Sharpe eventually went on to confirm that Skip was crossing too many boundaries and eventually, he had to put a stop to all of it.

Shannon Sharpe Remains Diplomatic

“I felt what he did. It wasn’t what he said, it was who said it. It’s like Ocho and I, there are certain things I know that I shouldn’t cross with Ocho,” he said. “Ocho knows there are certain things that we shouldn’t cross with each other. We can joke, yeah we joke, we go back and forth. But I didn’t want his show to get canceled. He gave me an opportunity. I would love to see him go on. Megan Thee Stallion’s Foundation Launches Emergency Power Program with Bread of Life Inc.

Megan Thee Stallion and Nicki Minaj let shots ring off at each other earlier this year. Minaj dropped “Big Foot,” Thee Stallion clapped at Minaj with “Hiss.” But what started this beef? Thee Stallion doesn’t know.

In a new cover story with Billboard, Hot Girl Meg spoke about mending the once-positive relationship.

Danger From “For The Love Of Ray J” Goes On Unhinged Racist Rant

For The love Of Ray J was a fan-favorite show on VH1 back in the day. Overall, it was very much in the same vein as Flavor Of Love. There were some iconic characters on the show, and Ray J was certainly able to increase his profile with the series. However, there are some former contestants who seem to be upset about their time on their show. Some are even using how their life has turned out as an excuse for going on racist rants.

Below, you can see that Danger from For The Love Of Ray J is one of those people. In her rant, she claimed that black people have been the source of all of her problems. She claims that had she married a white man, she wouldn’t be dealing with what she’s going through right now. It is a cruel, absurd, and harmful rant that has left many fans in a state of shock. In fact, most believe that Danger is to blame for her own problems and that she should hold her own self accountable.

“People need to learn to take accountability! Take accountability for your choices in life. Why is that so hard for people to do? Excuses,” one person wrote. “Take some accountability. Your life is that way because you made it that way,” wrote another. This sentiment was all over the comments at The Neighborhood Talk. Hopefully, these comments are a wake up call for Danger.

Let us know what you think about all of this, in the comments section down below. Do you believe that Danger is going to face real-life consequences for what she said? 50 Cent Reveals Omari Hardwick’s “Power” Character Originally Had A Much Different Ending

50 Cent discussed his relationship with Power star Omari Hardwick and his controversial comments about working on the show during a recent interview with Gillie Da Kid. 50 began by explaining that Hardwick’s comments about feeling underpaid weren’t directed at him. He revealed that the actor hit him up in the DMs after the story broke, claiming that his quotes were misleading. He continued: “At the end of the day, Ghost was supposed to die when I died. I extended it… The problem with working with 50 Cent is, it’s 50 Cent’s show.”

When The Neighborhood Talk shared 50’s comments on Instagram, fans jumped in the comments section to share their opinions on the situation. “I hate how slow yall are. He not saying he didn’t wanna pay him clearly Starz didn’t & instead of killing him off when they initially wanted to, he extended until Season 5. Simple,” one user wrote. Another had a different take, writing: “But he was the FACEEEEEEEEEEEEEE of the show and network. That’s different than being some regular character. When you thought of the show you automatically pictured him!”

As for Hardwick’s criticism, he complained about the finale of Power while speaking at a panel during the TriBeca Film Festival. “I’m with y’all in this sense, I’m with you in the sense that the way the story was sold and told to me is not befitting of the way it ended, guys. So y’all have every right to be like, ‘It didn’t end right,’” he said. “And because we don’t honor our fans enough, and I know me, Matt, and Trey are different. We honor y’all, we honor our fans, man. We often forget that the fans are being sold and told a story that has a genesis, and that it has to end the way that it was sold.”

50 Cent Speaks On Omari Hardwick

50 previously addressed Hardwick’s complaints in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “This [ninja emoji] is a strange bird,” 50 said at the time. “The f*ck is he talking about? I never done nothing but look out for him. If he needed something I gave it to him. I understand now, that shit didn’t matter at all.” Check out his latest remarks below. Druski & Joe Budden Share A Cringe-Worthy Chest Bump In New Commercial: Watch

Druski and Joe Budden are in somewhat different industries and really don’t have any history together. However, they are now connecting for a new commercial. According to a tweet from a user who goes by SOUND, the comedian and rapper turned podcaster are essentially brand ambassadors for PrizePicks. If you don’t know, it’s a daily fantasy sports app/website that allows people to place prop bets on professional and college athletes from numerous leagues. However, you aren’t competing against other players, just the stats. If you pick the correct over or under for an individual’s numbers, then you win money. In the 30-second commercial, both Budden and Druski are trying to decide who they want to place bets on.

Ultimately, they go on to make the correct picks –with help from Joe– and they celebrate by chest bumping each other at the party later on. It’s both funny and cringe-worthy in the best way possible. According to Vibe, newcomer to the brand, Joe Budden, expressed his excitement about working with PrizePicks moving forward. “PrizePicks is fun, fresh, simple to use, and most importantly for me, not afraid to take risks. Nothing about PrizePicks feels like the old guard being run by old rules, they’re truly a great organization that isn’t afraid to embrace creativity and that’s paramount to me”.

If you had this happening on your 2024 bingo card, then we salute you.
