Zendaya Admits That She Doesn’t Think She Could ‘Ever Be A Pop Star’

Nearly a decade ago, Zendaya gained traction in her entertainment career as a star on Disney’s Shake It Up. Between 2010-2013 she appeared on the show and also contributed music to it. In 2013, she released her self-titled debut album which was highlighted by the Platinum-selling “Replay.” Aside from the release of “Something New” with Chris Brown in 2016, Zendaya’s musical offerings have mostly come through her acting roles on shows like Euphoria, Smallfoot, and The Greatest Showman. During a recent interview with her Spider-Man co-star Andrew Garfield, Zendaya opened up about her desires (or lack thereof) for a music career.

“I was talking to Sam [Levinson, Euphoria creator] about this earlier,” Zendaya said as a part of Variety’s “Actors on Actors” issue. “I was like, ‘I don’t know if I could ever be a pop star.’ It’s because as an actor, there’s a level of anonymity that I get to have, which I really like.”

She continued, “And I get to sort my stuff, whatever that is, through a character and nobody needs to know about it. Whereas in other forms and other mediums, it’s all you all the time. I like the idea that somebody else, meaning Rue [from Euphoria], gets to take on that stuff and I can …” Garfield then asked if her worries about pop stardom were connected to her desire for personal boundaries. “Yeah, boundaries,” Zendaya replied. “Learning what’s for me.”

‘Ms. Marvel’ Features A New Song From Pakistani Rapper Eva B, ‘Rozi’

Marvel’s new superhero show, Ms. Marvel, is out now on Disney Plus, introducing non-comic book fans to Kamala Khan, one of the medium’s most beloved new characters since Miles Morales. Fans who watched the show were treated to a brand-new song from Pakistani rapper, Eva B, who’s credited with being the nation’s first-ever female rapper. The song is called “Rozi” and is rapped entirely in Urdu; it’s about embracing your self-confidence despite what people may say — a poignant concept that reflects one of the show’s main themes.

Say what you want to about Disney and Marvel — they are massive corporate entities that exist for the sole purpose of making (a lot of) money, so they’ll never have the best track record with this stuff — but it’s pretty cool how they’d tried to highlight the backgrounds of their diverse new cast of heroes through the soundtracks of the projects featuring them. Like recruiting TDE and Kendrick Lamar to executive produce the soundtrack for Black Panther and 88rising to soundtrack Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, tapping a Pakistani rapper — especially a young woman whose struggles echo those of Kamala herself — expands the scope of possibilities for any number of people worldwide.

Because of certain cultural mores, Eva B was discouraged from pursuing her career, but was supported by a cousin. She still had to record music without access to a studio, recording on her phone and catching the attention of the head of Pakistan’s largest streaming platform. However, because of the political situation in Pakistan, she’s been unable to perform in public and must hide her true identity — ironically, just like a superhero.

Indian-American singer and composer Gingger Shankar, who helped write “Rozi,” said of the track in a statement, “The track is done in Urdu, which for a mainstream Marvel series to do is fantastic. I’ve always been a fan of Marvel, but if you had told me five years ago that we would be doing an Urdu hip-hop track with Pakistani and Indian influences for a Pakistani female superhero, I wouldn’t have believed it! ‘Rozi’ is an anthem for women’s empowerment and Eva B delivers. Eva and I worked on it through the pandemic between Los Angeles and Pakistan and are thrilled for folks to see its debut on Ms. Marvel.”

Listen to “Rozi” above and watch Ms. Marvel on Disney Plus.

‘P-Valley’: Here’s All The Music You Heard In Season 2, Episode 1

(SPOILERS for this week’s P-Valley epsiode will be found below.)

After almost two years, P-Valley made its return to STARZ to kick off the show’s long-awaited second season. The Katori Hall-led show, which is an adaptation of her play of the same title, follows a group of strippers who work at The Pynk, a strip club in Chucalissa, Mississippi. For season two of P-Valley, things are a bit different at The Pynk. Hailey, who came to Chucalissa after surviving a hurricane, is now a co-owner of the strip club after she paid $250,000 to buy it at an auction after it went into foreclosure towards the end of season one. Additionally, all of the girls at The Pynk are figuring out how to stay afloat as the world navigates the coronavirus pandemic.

The aforementioned events in this week’s episode are soundtracked by songs that help to accentuate the emotions behind each scene. They include Jucee Froot’s thumping “Down In The Valley” which serves as the series’ theme song.

What Songs Were In ‘P-Valley’ S2E1?

The songs that soundtracked the standout moments on this week’s episode of P-Valley are Jucee Froot’s “Distance” with A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and J. Alphonse Nicholson’s “Mississippi Pride (Extended)” with FM New Money and “When I Get Out.” Froot’s record appears as a man (Rolando Boyce) checks out a make-shift car wash that the Pynk Ladies have set up to bring in some dollars. It’s this scene that establishes the new day-to-day lives of everyone at The Pynk.

Nicholson’s records support his role as Lil Murda on the show. Both records show that the aspiring rapper is finding his sound as he aims to spread his name far past the Mississippi Delta.

The soundtrack for this week’s episode also includes the following songs:

Jennifer Robles & Belinda Robles — “Drip Wet
Shae Marie — “IDFWYB
LightSkinKeisha — “Spend Sum Cash
Sam Cooke — “The Last Mile Of The Way

STARZ’s ‘P-Valley’ airs on Thursdays at 9:00 pm EST.

Kim Kardashian Apologizes To Her Family For Kanye West’s Treatment

Now that Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are officially divorced, they’ve demonstrated divergent approaches to taking stock of their relationship. While Kanye has determined that he wants that old thing back (which somehow involves gaslighting her over her fashion choices), Kim apparently feels differently — and has pretty adamant about expressing it. But, of course, their relationship didn’t only affect them; over the course of the past few years, Kanye has dragged Kim’s family into their drama, including lashing out at them on social media during the contentious divorce process.

In Thursday’s (May 26) episode of the family’s new Hulu show The Kardashians, Kim addresses the effects that Kanye’s antics may have had on her sisters and mom. “I do recognize the impact that my relationship has had on my family,” she says in a clip provided by TMZ. “And I’ve never had the opportunity to just say: I’m sorry, guys.” Her apology appears to have been sparked by a recent song of Kanye’s, in which Kim says “he’s talking mad sh*t about me.” While the song isn’t specified in the clip, it was likely one of many songs from Kanye’s album Donda 2 speaking about their breakup.

Fortunately for Kim and co., the song itself probably didn’t get too much play; Kanye only made his album available via the $200 stem player, which means only those who purchased the device (or bootlegged the album) heard whatever she felt was so disparaging. Meanwhile, in a previous episode, she praised Kanye for allegedly retrieving the remainder of her sex tape with Ray J — something Ray J himself disputed.

Jack Harlow Admires Pete Davidson’s Authenticity In An Essay For ‘Time’: ‘He Doesn’t Try To Hide’

For Time’s annual 100 Most Influential People issue, rapper Jack Harlow penned an essay about his buddy Pete Davidson and his comedic craft. Though the two had been online friends for months before their official in-person meeting, the two officially linked up for the first time before Harlow’s appearance on Saturday Night Live last year.

Since then, the two have remained close, and Harlow considers Davidson one of his biggest inspirations.

“Pete’s appeal to the world has everything to do with his authenticity,” wrote Harlow. “He doesn’t try to hide the person that he is. It’s a classic recipe for success and connection. I would consider myself truthful, but being around Pete makes me want to continue to reach even further for the realest version of myself.”

Harlow’s essay coincides with the season finale of SNL‘s 47th season, which marked Davidson’s last show as an SNL cast member. Ahead of his SNL swan song, Davidson took to Instagram (by way of Dave Sirus), saying, “I got to share so much with this audience and literally grow up in front of your eyes. We were together through the good and the bad, the happiest and the darkest of times.”

Pete Davidson Mentioned Kanye West And Ariana Grande During The ‘Weekend Update’ On ‘SNL’

Last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live was also the last ever for Pete Davidson. Before the episode aired, the comedian announced that he would not be returning for the show’s 48th season along with other cast members including Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, and Kyle Mooney. For his last appearance on SNL, Davidson went out with a bang. He conducted one last rap parody sketch, which was eventually interrupted by Eminem who asked demanded that he stop them. He also stopped by Weekend Update to deliver a sweet and self-deprecating farewell to SNL, but not without mentioning a couple of music names he’s been tied to.

Davidson sat with Weekend Update co-hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che and kicked things off by acknowledging the “millions of people only watching to see if I bring up Kanye.” This is of course in reference to his new relationship with Kim Kardashian following her divorce from Kanye West whom she was married to for seven years. Next, Davidson ran through some events that took place in his life during his time at SNL. One of them includes a phone call he made to SNL producer Lorne Michaels about his engagement to Ariana Grande.

“He always gives the best advice,” Davidson said. “I said, ‘Lorne, I just got engaged to Ariana Grande after dating for two weeks.’ He said, ‘Oh, hold on for dear life!’ It’s a true thing he said.”

Eminem Crashed Pete Davidson’s Latest ‘SNL’ Rap Parody On To Say ‘They All Suck’

Last night’s Saturday Night Live episode was a unique one for multiple reasons. Japanese Breakfast made her debut on the show with performances of “Be Sweet” and “Paprika.” Additionally, it marked the finale episode for the show’s 47th season. However, the most notable aspect of the show was the notable goodbyes that were delivered on the episode. Pete Davidson, Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, and Kyle Mooney all announced that they would not return for the show’s 48th season. With that, they all tried to go out with a bang and Davidson achieved that thanks to his latest and final SNL rap parody.

For his latest rap parody, Davidson — who was dressed as Lorne Michaels — took on Dr. Dre and Eminem’s “Forgot About Dre,” making it the third time that he’s rapped over an Eminem song. While the comedian might have had a smooth plan for his latest take on the 1999 track, Eminem himself arrived on set to cut things short. Towards the end of the video, Eminem appeared and essentially pulled the plug on everything. “I would just stop. They all suck,” Eminem said about the rap parodies. “Stop. It’s really bad.” Davidson tried to explain that he was just paying homage to the rapper, but Eminem refused to entertain him. “Pete, don’t f*cking do it again!”

Davidson heeds Eminem’s request, but not without taking his anger out on the real Lorne Michaels. Referencing Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore, Davidson yells, “Well Lorne, you blew it!”
